Great News
We are on the move again at
The Helston Railway
Roger Winnen
After a number of frustrating years hoping to obtain planning permission for the Trevarno Farm site, The Helston Railway finally succeeded in satisfying the planning appeals. Today Thursday 1st September, 2016 Sir Peter Hendy, Chairman of Network Rail cut the first sod at Trevarno Farm for its new station site, with the original spade that was used for the Cutting of the First Sod on the 22nd March 1882 for the Helston Railway.
Unfortunately I was still on route when this took place, however Chris Heaps, Chairman of the Charity Trustees of the Helston Railway kindly posed for this photograph.
We wish them well in this project. Well Done to you all.

Laira Open Day 1972

I'm writing again following the discovery of an old photo of me, as a six-year old in the cab of a Class 52 Western. It was taken at Laira Open Day 1972 (I also found the programme!). I was wondering if anyone knew which Western was used for the cab photos on that day, and which other locos were on display.
I'd so love to know which loco I was sitting in all those moons ago!
Can anybody help please. (See entry on 2nd Sept for info)
Saveock, why is it taking so long?
Mick House
In response to a query as to why the bridge replacement at Saveock is taking so long Mick House replies :- It is taking a long time because of the services that cross the bridge they had to be dugout then supported by scaffolding so that the bridge could be dismantled and taken apart bit by bit, it  would have been almost impossible to remove the bridge in one, as it was rotten and in a bad state. Then came preparation work for the cranes, as the land that the cranes were to stand on had to be deforested, then as the land was very low it was close to the water table so they had to take this into consideration, they had to dig down over 2 metres to then compact the land to make a stable foundation for the cranes to sit on.
Unlike most bridges that can be moved reasonably fast this one was a logistical nightmare.

                                                                                Many thanks Mick.

Have you seen this? This is a rather long item on the web but if you have time to peruse it is well worth a look, excellent photos and detailed drawings.  Many thanks to David Tozer for drawing our attention.  Just click below.

Collett 2251 class 0-6-0 No. 3205 hauled two legs of this tour from Ilfracombe to Taunton and thence to Exeter. This double movement included what is believed to be the last use of the turntable at Taunton mpd.
Any ideas where this shot was taken?
