37's on the test train
Guy Vincent

The monthly Reading-Salisbury-Exeter-Westbury-Salisbury track testing train (headcode 1Q23) ran yesterday (6th) formed unusually of 2x class 37 locos with stock. The locos, 37057 & 37610, were caught firstly at Salisbury and then Westbury in good sunshine, almost as uncommon these days as a pair of 37s!

If all goes to plan these two should reach Penzance today, Friday 7th.

Many thanks, Guy - one for the Cornish contingent to watch out for today!

Ashbury Crossing
Ken Mumford

Our grandson [Stefan] wanted to go and see some trains, so I took him, after lunch, to the south side of Ashbury Crossing which is 6 miles east of Swindon Station.  However the crossing is in the county of Oxfordshire.

Here, for a very long time, the Shrivenham to Ashbury road has been bisected by the railway but if one looks on both sides of the railway there is evidence of single and double white lines leading to both sides of the former level crossing.  Now there are large concrete blocks!! There was also once a signal box.

6C48 [Appleford to Whatley Quarry]. Loco too far away to identify! Passed Wantage Road 13 EARLY, but was in Challow Loop for some 52 minutes. Therefore 32 LATE passed me. Did not stop in Swindon East Loop as planned and passed Swindon [platform 4] 2 EARLY, but was then 8 LATE passing Wootton Bassett Junction!! 06.02.2025, copyright Ken Mumford.
Many thanks Ken - a lovely sunny day for it.

Catching up with 66152
Neil Phillips

I saw Jon's great photo of 66152 on the Par Docks branch with HST 43042 passing overhead and wished I'd been there! I had an opportunity to call in to Par station this afternoon to catch 66152 before it departed for Exeter Riverside yard, I've wanted to record this Class 66 for two reasons.

Firstly, I believe it was the first '66' to receive DB Schenker (as it was then) red livery, and it appears to be unique in using a number font derived from the previous EWS livery.

Secondly, turning the clock back to the early morning of Saturday 9th August 2003 while at Reading awaiting the arrival of D1015 'Western Champion' on the 'Royal Duchy' tour, a still relatively new 66152 was standing on the centre road with a long rake of former Yeoman PGA hopper wagons now in departmental service. It was still there when we set off on our historic journey returning the first Western to Penzance in over 26 years!

We meet again - on the level this time! 66152 with 7 JIA wagons awaits time as 43042 prepares to depart with 2P16 13.15 Penzance - Plymouth (43198 bringing up the rear). 6th February 2025. Copyright Neil Phillips.

A still nearly new 66152 in EWS livery stands patiently at Reading on a rake of former Yeoman PGA hopper wagons. Hard to believe that in 2003 the next train to arrive at Platform 4 behind it would be hauled by a Western diesel on its way to Penzance - back to the '70s! 9th August 2003, copyright Neil Phillips.
Many thanks, Neil - glad you managed to catch up with the loco
