High Wood, Liskeard
The railway connection
Peter Murnaghan

The work that the volunteers of Protect Earth are doing in Liskeard's High Wood, to return it to a natural, native woodland is really impressive.  However, one aspect that was in danger of getting lost was the historic role that the wood played as a transport corridor.  The Liskeard & Caradon Railway once passed through the length of High Wood and allowed the mineral wealth of Caradon Hill to reach far away markets and enrich the local area.

Brian Oldham, of the Liskeard Old Cornwall Society and I felt that it would be a good idea to raise the awareness of this old railway, that closed over 100 years ago in 1917.  With the support and help of Protect Earth, we have created an information board, telling the story of the old mineral railway.

Sited at the top of the steps, at the southern end of the wood, the new sign will be officially unveiled on Saturday 21st February by the President of the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies.  You are warmly welcomed to come and witness this unveiling at 2.00pm.

The site is easily reached by walking the length of the track from the Woodhill end.  Alternatively, by walking up the track from Looe Mills, near Moorswater, for about 400 yards, the newly improved steps on your right will bring you to the site of the new sign.

It will be a modest opening (no bunting or refreshments), but it will mark a new chapter in raising awareness of the old railway line to walkers and visitors who might have previously been unaware.  Using What three words, the approximate site of the notice is  ///briskly.victor.node

Worcester Landslip
Steve Widdowson

On Friday 14th February 2026 a minor landslip was reported on the line between Worcester Foregate Street station & Tunnel Hill Junction signal box. With more heavy rain during the night & following day. The landslip had turned into a serious problem, requiring heavy machines and train from Westbury being hauled by 70816 & round the clock work to stabilise the site, which is opposite Worcester WMR depot.

Timetables for both WestMidland Railways & Great Western had to be amended, while a shuttle service was put in to operation between Worcester Foregate Street & Hereford. A number of services had to be turnround at Worcester Shrub Hill.

Many thanks Steve - this years continuous rain has caused all kinds of problems.

Class 175's at Penzance
Dennis Clarke

I was at Penzance today and took a few photos of the 175 units on staff training runs.

175007 arrived first, quickly followed by 175003.  They were then coupled together and returned to Plymouth, albeit nearly an hour late.

Many thanks Roger. A grey day maybe, but still infinitely more interesting than anything that has passed by Langstone Rock over recent days!

Tesco Train

Picture
4V44 1042 Daventry DRS Tesco - Wentloog has been a solid DRS66 turn for years, However recently 68's have started hauling the service, it has now become rare for a 66 to haul the train. 68005 is seen hauling such a service on 16th Feb 26, seen passing Pirton crossing in Worcestershire. A purposeful looking machine - many thanks, Steve.
