Golden Oldies
Craig Munday

I'm having a sort through my extensive albums from the early 80s. I'm scanning in Hi Res the decent ones and sorting them back into new albums. I have lots of Charles and Diana photo albums from 1981!! The stickiness has gone from the sheets now too.

Here are some recent shots brought back to life, including 37289 in the yard at Truro for the exhibition there. I dont have a date, and would be obliged for one. The derailment of 47125 at Hayle has been narrowed down to sometime Autumn 82? Again a date would be great.

A great selection Craig - many thanks as always.

If anyone can help with a date for the Truro Rail Exhibition (our Truro Gallery suggests July 1983, but no exact date) or the Hayle class 47 derailment, please get in touch - [email protected]

That's the last of Rogers February 1976 photos - thanks to those who've emailed in to express their thanks. Well done to Roger for digging these out - next month we'll have some more.

Re: A light load for Hercules
Guy Vincent

A belated response to Roger Geach’s photo of 50007 with 2 mail vans that appeared on the site on Monday 9th.   The working was the M-F 4O41 19.54 Cardiff Central - Southampton Central parcels and mail.  Following the introduction of Sprinter DMUs between Cardiff and Portsmouth in May 1988 there was a requirement to run a daily parcels / mail service on the route. After Temple Meads it ran in the path of the former 21.45 Bristol TM - Southampton passenger / mail train, returning as 4V75 01.55 Southampton - Bristol TM calling only at Salisbury.  Between 23 Nov 1988 and 20 Jan 1989 the service was operated with specially converted class 127 DMU stock, sets 916 (55976 & 55986) and 912 (55972 & 55982) being recorded. Locos noted during the period of operation were mainly from classes 37, 47 and 50 with a very occasional 33 appearing.  From memory the service was withdrawn in 1990 with mail being routed via Reading on other services.

Many thanks for the excellent information Guy, much appreciated.

Clay Empties

Many thanks Ian. Interestingly the 1977 headcode isn't miles apart from its 2026 equivalent - 6V73 nowadays.

More Peaks!
Michael Adams & Michael Forward

Picture
Ian Thomas's picture of a Peak on the 13.07 Paddington to Liverpool has prompted me to dig out my picture of this service, this one at Reading on 23 December 1983 behind 45139. I noted at the time that Peaks on this train ended the following May. Copyright Michael Forward.
Picture
Michael Adam's picture of 45139 at Reading shows it on the same day with the Cardiff to Paddington service mentioned by Ian. Interesting to see the station before it's major rebuilding and we see on the left a service to Gatwick airport and an emu for Waterloo, both types of unit long gone. Copyright Michael Adams.

At the Western end of Reading in the previous Spring, I photographed 45074, with what look like new bogie box wagons, running from Acton to Westbury. Copyright Michael Forward.
Many thanks to Michael and Michael - it's been a good couple of days for Peak-loving CRS readers!
