Trials & Tribulations!
At the Bodmin Winter Steam Up
Jon Hird & Roger Winnen

The Bodmin Railway held their annual 'winter steam up' yesterday, 29.12.2024. The event featured resident Small Prarie 5552 and ex-Port of Par Bagnall 'Judy'. There was plenty of excitement for the visitors - the Boscarne branch, having been unused over Christmas, was extremely slippery which proved too challenging for both steam locos, resulting in the use of hired-in Class 10 D3489 to act as a thunderbird to rescue the trains.

A well-attended event which seemed to be enjoyed by all, a well-done to the Bodmin Railway for putting it on.

The crew set back and tried again. 'Judy' crosses the bridge over the River Camel just outside Boscarne. With a slightly more 'sporty' attack, the train got a little further than the last attempt, but still slipped to a stand near the farm overbridge. 29.12.2024, copyright Jon Hird.

NINETEEN SIXTY FOUR – PART 22
Remembering 29 December
Michael L. Roach

As I suspect is the case with most adults, there will be dates in the calendar etched in the memory because of the events that occurred on those dates. I have just a couple: 29 March (sad); 15 October (happy); and 29 December (dramatic). I have written about 29 December 1962 before several times, so do not intend to say much this time. That date was the day that the last passenger trains ran from Plymouth to Tavistock South and Launceston, and they were steam-hauled right to the end by 4500/4575 light prairies and 6400 pannier tanks, much as they would have been in the 1930s (and even earlier in the case of the prairies).

Having made many trips over the line in the previous 20 months, I opted not to travel far on the trains on the last day, but to spend much of the daylight hours at Yelverton photographing the last trains to call at the station. The decision was made before seeing the weather forecast which was not good. After the booking office closed at 2.00pm the only shelter from the 60mph winds and driving snow was to stand on the west side of a building in the lee of the bitter easterly wind.

You can read more about the last weeks of 1962, that dramatic last day and the evening trip from Plymouth to Tavistock South in a previous series – click here

Boxing Day - 50 Years Ago
Roger Geach

A picture to remind us all that Boxing day was once almost a normal service on the railway, with services starting up around 0800.

On the 26th December 1974, 50 years ago, I went to Laira to see what was on shed.

47272 of Haymarket was the most notable, among all the Peaks, 47, 50s and Westerns.

I went home on 1V71, the Leeds to Penzance, which I think started from Birmingham that day at 1015 hrs, with 46049 to Plymouth.

Here is 1044 at Bodmin road which worked forward from Plymouth, the sunshine of the morning had given way to cloud.

I certainly would not to want to visit LA 50 years later - you'd be lucky to see one loco here now. There were 49 locos on laira that morning, not counting the 08s.

Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year
Trevor and Barbara Tremethick
Hello Keith and Roger
This will probably be my last submission for 2024.

I had hoped for a better view after the leaves had fallen, but such was not the case. Lurking shyly amongst the branches today, I found 43153 Chûn Castle de-branded and without nameplates and 43194 Okehampton Castle, still in full regalia.

I guess these have come out of store, as I haven't seen them for a while. Photography here has been getting more difficult as vegetation spreads, and further exploration was precluded by me taking a tumble in Embankment Road and having to return damaged to the car.

You may be interested to know that a Chûn Castle nameplate was auctioned last month by GWRA, fetching £5,100.

Finding these two means that I have managed a shot (of sorts) of all Castle power cars, bar one. The one that escaped my lens was 43172 Tiverton Castle, exported to Nigeria at the end of last year. Still, not a bad score I suppose.

Wishing everyone the Compliments of the Season, and let us hope for a happy (and peaceful) New Year.

With kind regards

Trevor T

Moving the clay on election day

Part 1

The 1997 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday, 1 May 1997. The governing Conservative Party, led by Prime Minister John Major, was defeated in a landslide by the opposition Labour Party led by Tony Blair, achieving a 179-seat majority and a total of 419 seats.

As the country changed from blue to red, Roger was out and about in Mid-Cornwall photographing the china clay traffic.

Many thanks Paul - an interesting couple of pics, I wonder if anybody knows how the loco came a cropper?
Dear Roger,

Regarding the article on crash damaged class 31 31241 from Paul Barlow, the loco was officially withdrawn on 14th March 1982 with what looks like a bent main frame (normally a terminal decision), it was in an advanced state of being scrapped at Swindon Works by 30th April 1982.  The loco was the second of the standard 31's to be withdrawn, but its accident happened some years earlier on 03rd January 1976.  The loco was hauling 3V01 Birmingham Curzon Street to Worcester Shrub Hill parcels train with a solitary GUV coach when Western D1055 'Western Advocate', running light engine for refueling off a late running 6V73 Stoke to St. Blazey, ran into the back of it whilst stationary at Worcester Tunnel Junction.  This crash destroyed D1055's cab and pushed the GUV violently forward into 31241's cab, the crash resulted in the loss of two lives of the crew on the Western.  As a result of this both D1055 and the GUV coach were also withdrawn.

What I have not been able to find out is why it took so long for the loco to meet its fate and why it was sent from Worcester to Exeter?  The accident report from the Department For Transport was not produced until 28th September 1977, but after that there is no further information that I could find.  I hope what was found so far is of help!

Regards

Karl.

Many Thanks Karl
According to this string on Flickr, 31241 was at Laira on Boxing Day 1981, before being moved to Exeter and thence to Swindon for scrapping via Bristol for parts removal. But who bent it??
