The President in London
The CRS President has been to London over the Christmas week on diverted services - this is really out of our reporting area but as it is Christmas and its our president we'll bend the rules.  Many thanks to Peter Bragg

Additional notes on Cornish Signalboxes by Roy Hart

BALDHU

Baldhu box opened in 1938 as part of a plan to increase line capacity in Cornwall. The box was large for the 6 levers that it carried -it was of the same size as Goonbarrow Junction or Chacewater. This is because the plan was to have up and down goods loops at Baldhu. The loops would occupy the expanse of flat land on the up side (still visible today) which remained after the main line was doubled on a new formation in 1913-14. The plan was never carried out. Baldhu box remained until 1957.
In similar vein, Trerule box (opened at the same time as Baldhu and of similar size) was to be the junction for the projected new branch line to Looe, but the project ended with world war two and Trerule, like Baldhu, remained as a 6 - lever 'break-section' box. Like Baldhu, it was replaced by colour light IBS signals in the 1950s.

TREMABE
This spot is forgotten today. In the run-up to D-Day, there was a need to provide extra facilities for the increased traffic. New loops were put in ar Par (the down refuge was extended eastwards to make a goods loop) and Lostwithiel (new up goods loop). A new up goods loop was laid in at Tremabe, (between Doublebois and Liskeard) and a signalbox opened there in 1943. After WW2 it saw little use and was closed and removed in 1952. It is hard to spot today. The box was a flat-roofed 'ARP' design.
Many thanks Roy              (Also added to general web site)
Truro Cattle Pens Siding box.          Julian Hanwell

Julian writes - a couple more polaroid snaps of 'Truro Cattlepens Siding Signal Box' being used as a P Way hut.
I always wanted to look inside this abandoned box but never got the chance to do it. It closed as a box about 1923/5 when it became 'Truro Cattle Pens Ground Frame'. The release was worked by an interlocking lever in Truro East Box but It would be nice to know if the frame inside the box was still in use (As St Ives was after being closed) or did the railway install a new Ground Frame outside the box with annets key release
Picture

The layout here comprised a loop around the back of the box, this prior to 1925 had connections to the up main. However after this the loop reduced to a siding serving pens behind the box which was accessed from the down main by means of a trailing point. The siding was removed w.e.f. 17th November 1963.
PORTREATH branch and incline                 Roy Hart

The incline at Portreath was opened, with the rest of the branch, in 1837. It was powered by a cornish beam engine at the summit of the incline, which was known as the 'Lady Basset'. One wagon up and one down. This engine was replaced, towards the end of the 19th contury, by a smaller, rotary engine which lasted until the end.
Photos of the engine building show that it resembled a conventional Cornish engine house -and this is why.
The branch fell into disuse by 1930, but the GWR kept the engine in good order. The branch closed beyond North Pool siding in 1936 and all remained in situ until the invasion scare of 1940, when the track on the incline was swiftly removed and a concrete barrier (still there today) was erected at the base of the incline, presumably to prevent the Nazi hordes from invading Illogan.
The rest of the branch was lifted in the early months of 1945. Interestingly, the locomotive which hauled the demolition trains was pannier tank 1799, imortalised for many years on the pub sign at the Railway Inn at Illogan Highway.  This engine was shedded for many years at Carn Brea and spent most of its life in West Cornwll.

Many thanks Roy,  for our current collection of pictures please go to the section on the Portreath branch.

Carn Brea Yard
Some extremely interesting information from Roy Hart (Rangoon)

Dear Keith,
Julian's pictures bring back a host of memories: like Julian, as a local schoolboy I haunted Carn Brea Yard in the early sixties. At that time it was a fascinating place. There were, behind the box, sidings with ashpits between the rails -relics of the old engine shed (closed in 1917) together with the stone-built repair shop, trackless by then, and the massive granite coal stage, surmounted by a large water tank. This is visible (minus the tank) in one of the photos. Because CBY had the only water facilities on the main line between Hayle and Truro, the Drump Lane pilot made a daily trip to the yard at about 2pm every day to fill up. There was a 'parachute' tank on the up side, beteen the up main and the Portreath branch, and a conventional water column on the down main al ost opposite the box.
Behind the old repair shop was a derelict siding of Barlow rail ( a failed type of rail used by Brunel) which ran across the roadway into an overgrown walled coal yard.
The outermost of the sidings was a private siding for Carn Brea mine (known as 'mine siding'). It was still fenced and gated, the fence made of old boiler tubes (waste not, want not on the GWR).
In the early sixties, the yard was used for the storage of condemned stock and, as Julian mentions, was employed as a depot for refurbishing concrete sleepers recovered from the Perranporth and Helston branches. These were relaid mostly on the Falmouth branch and when replaced in recent years, were donated to the Helston railway - a supreme irony as this is where they started off!
The yard was closed and the points disconnected and spiked, the associated signals removed, in 1967. In 1969, the siding nearest the main line was reinstated as part of an abortive local freight sceme. This failed and Julian's pictures date from shortly after this.
The old Carn Brea station box controlled the station sidings, together with a down refuge. The box was opened just for the daily 'mineral' to shunt and was manned by a porter-signalman for that hour or so each day. The box closed in September 1953 and the yard points at the station operated by a ground frame, electrically released from the Yard box.
Until 1900 Carn Brea Yard had the only repair shop on the main line west of Plymouth; it had busy coal traffic connected with the mines and it was the junction for the Portreath branch. Today, looking at the site from the overbridge at the Redruth end it is hard to believe that anything existed there.

Roy Hart
Many thanks Roy - this has been added to the section featuring Carn Brea Yard in the main website.

Carn Brea Yard Signal Box
As a youngster Julian Hanwell spent many hours in his local box at Carn Brea Yard,  he took some photographs and luckily for us all so did his mother Peggy who also visited the box. In the main section of the website dealing with Carn Brea you will also find an amusing tale plus some notes on the box written by the late Cyril Hitchens. You'll find out about the four footed visitor to the box!!

Finally a view to the east from Carn Brea Yard Box showing all that was left of the once extensive yard, just the up refuge siding. There was a water column at he far end of the yard, this had already been dismantled though the components lay on the ground for many a year. The Portreath branch curved away to the left in the distance. Of particular interest to the photographer is the Yardmasters house, seen in the centre of the picture, her wedding cake was cooked in the oven of this house. Sadly the house succumbed to the demolition men months after this picture was taken. Copyright Peggy Le Hanwell.

A visit to part of the Former East Cornwall Minerals Branch to Callington on 28th December, 1977 by Roger Winnen. Visiting Luckett, Latchley where we met a lady who was employed by the company looking after Latchley Station from the opening in 1908, and remained living in the station house in 1977. A photograph was shown to us, and a copy made for my collection which was much appreciated, and also a picture of Chilsworthy.

Redruth Junction Relics
It is amazing what there is out there in enthusiasts 'Treasure Troves'.  Very recently the plates which were fixed to the instrument shelf in Redruth Junction Box have come to light - many thanks to Julian Hanwell for these pictures.  The plates refer to Redruth station box, just a short distance away across the viaduct and the Carn Brea Yard Box a couple of miles away to the west. Many thanks to Graham Mann, Network Rail Programme Manager for taking the time and trouble to send us these pictures on Christmas Day.  Many thanks also for others sent during 2015.
It's nice to be appreciated and can U help please?

Just to say very many thanks for the pleasure of viewing so many fascinating pictures – brings back memoirs of past and present holidays.

I have a 42xx – 4215 - with a complete rake of ‘hoods’ - open clays – vans and some Delabole (presflo’s) and a toad all 00 gauge.

Would you know if any  pictures of 4215 – 2-8-0T – originally built as a Welsh Collier – but was seconded to Cornwall – possibly St Blazey/Par – exist.
Any ideas please.?

Many thanks –

Happy and Prosperous 2016 and perhaps most importantly Good Health to ALL.

AN iconic railway camp site at Dawlish Warren is to close after rising repair and restoration costs made it financially unviable.
Brunel Railway Camping Park, Beach Road, will open for its last season next summer after more than 50 years.
The eight converted railway carriages – with many original features – are run as holiday accommodation by a non-profit making association but although the operation breaks even the coaches are in need of expensive upkeep.
Tracy Baker, general secretary of the Great Western Railway Staff Association, which runs the park, explained: ‘Although the coaches break even, their upkeep and restoration is very expensive and they are in need of some tender, loving care.
‘I still think that the site could be run as a going concern and it would have been lovely to see it continue, but no one has come forward.
Hope this helps. Kind regards, Alastair MacLean
