'Eddystone' at Swindon
Ken Mumford

A slightly chilly half hour at Swindon station, HOWEVER, things didn't work out as planned.

34028 was supposed to be held just west of the station for other eastbound trains to pass BUT it was allowed to come up the UML [Up Main Line] and stop while a few IETs went ahead of it eastwards.

This was a real bonus to the many railway enthusiasts that had gathered mainly on platform 3 to record this train.

It left Bristol (Temple Meads) 5 LATE, Bath Spa 5 LATE, passed Tingley Junction 9 LATE, Wootton Bassett Junction 5 LATE BUT did not stop at Swindon Signal Sw1212 but stopped in the station on the UML.  On leaving the station, it was recorded at Highworth Junction 13 LATE.

Water was taken during an approximate stop of 25 minutes at Milton Junction and dropped passengers at Reading ON TIME.

Ponsandane Development
Craig Munday

I was trawling my May 2016 gallery for a picture and came across the Ponsandane pictures I took. The tanks were due to be cut up, and the project team wanted images of the detritus left behind over the years. The bus depot and old Shunters cabin are included too, no longer there. Quite a transformation!

I've included 43156/43004 departing Lostwithiel taken the other day too. Another scene soon set to disappear.

Westbury Test Train
Guy Vincent

Colas-operated 3Q39 2211 (27th) Westbury-Bristol Kingsland Road structure gauging train in platform 3 at Westbury just after 5.00am on Friday 28th. The train had been checking lines on the former Southern region, including the Lymington branch and Eastleigh-Chandlers Ford. On departing Westbury, it covered the Melksham branch and, following reversal at Chippenham, continued via Box tunnel to Kingsland Road.

The locos are hired in from HNRC / Swietelsky (37607) and Locomotive Services Ltd (37667, now D6851 Flopsie).

A nice, colourful start to the day!

Moretonhampstead line
Andrew & Diane Jones

Dear Keith, Jon and Roger,

Firstly a big thank you to CRS contributors, the photography continues to be incredible with some amazing efforts to cover the remaining weeks of the HST.

The professionalism is remarkable considering the amount of time it takes to capture the images on a daily basis.

I am staying at Manaton this week and have encouraged my son in law to photograph some parts of the Wray Trail on the Moretonhampstead line.

The attached photographs are at Knowle, a very picturesque part of the railway.

We are very lucky that Devon Council has invested considerable amounts of money on railway conversion to trails, something in these days of austerity they would have difficulty, to justify.

St. Ives - Forty years ago
Clive Smith

A visit to St Ives in mid November to visit a new brewery taproom that had opened near the station got me digging out an old photo.
Picture
Pressed Steel Class 121 'bubble' P125 (W55025) seen here with the 16.03 St Ives - St Erth on the 11th January 1986. P125 was a local legend being allocated to Laira from 1974 to 1986 as well as a year or so between 1965 and 1966 and a few months between 1971 and 1972. It went into departmental use in 1993 until 2004. It was preserved by the North Somerset Railway in 2016 which doesn't have a site and so is stored at Long Marston. Some internal modifications have been made but it looks in a sorry state and not much has been heard of it since 2022. Copyright Clive Smith.

This is painting by artist Darcy Flint is on the wall of the new Mine Brewery Taproom in St Ives. I love it. This is the original. A copy is at Carbis Bay station and it is the winner of a GWR/Network Rail competition for artwork depicting the line. The painting highlights monuments which have been key to St Ives’ and Carbis Bay’s economy and social landscape such as the mining and hospitality industries. The painting also pays homage to sculptor Barbara Hepworth as well as local artists . The artist says the exaggerated scale of the buildings, coupled with the boldness of forms and colour are an attempt to create an image which can be appreciated both on the platform and from the train. Many thanks Clive, hopefully W55025 will have a future.

Double headed 47's
Roger Geach

Back in the RFD days when the St. Blazey - Dollands Moor ran from Exeter Riverside with a pair of RFD 47s in multi, the headcode was 6O92. This train left Riverside around 0930/1000 if I recall right.

The 47s worked the empties down to Riverside Sunday night/Monday morning then headed back later with the loaded heavy  train.

47281 and 47307 sit in the yard at riverside 03.12.1996, this is just another flow of traffic lost.

There must be a few CRS members who photographed this service - I was more likely to see this service in the London area at the time.

Creech RHTT

With the leaf-busting season drawing to a close, I thought it was about time to grab a couple of phots of the RHTT through Creech.

Today's offering was GBRf 57306 leading 57305, on 3S13 Westbury to Fairwater Yd, running to time, and resplendent in 'leaf-busting' livery.

Clean(ish) 66133 and 66151 at Bristol Temple Meads today on the 3S59 Swindon-Moreton on Lugg-Hereford-Portbury-Swindon RHTT.  This contract is operated by Colas who in turn hire locos from DB Cargo and these arrived at Swindon from Toton on 25th, displacing 66096 and 66176 which have now returned to their home depot for attention. GWR steam returns to Bristol
Guy Vincent

This week the once well-known 1/16th scale model of loco 6000 King George V was returned to Bristol Temple Meads station after being absent for several years. The model, built in 1930 by Bassett-Lowke, has been restored and placed inside a new attractive glass display case and can be found in the main passenger subway.  Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to put a coin in and watch the motion at work but nonetheless nice to see it back. There is also a large display outlining the loco's history.  For many years, the model was near the top of the stairs on platform 3 and it would be fitting to see it replaced there once the ongoing renovation works are finally completed.

NINETEEN SIXTY FOUR – PART 78
Great Western Countryside
Michael L. Roach

The Great Western Magazine was published monthly and through the 1930s it reflected an increasingly confident and successful company sadly cut short by the start of the Second World War, when it was busier than ever under government control. On the first (frontispiece) page the editor would sometimes choose a photo of a town or village in the Great Western operating area.  For the benefit of overseas readers who might be a bit hazy on British geography this was GW territory. Draw a line from the centre of London to Exeter; and a second from London to Birmingham and on to Chester and across to Portmadog – this huge slice of England and Wales between the two lines was GW territory. Yes, there were incursions by other railways around the periphery, and even some right across the middle to South Wales but these were mainly single routes and often single track. With the demise of coal mining in the last  years of the twentieth century 98 percent of that slice of Britain is all very pleasant countryside and the Magazine caught that rural atmosphere in the photographs it published in the 1930s. Many of the photos were sent in by members of the public rather than a GW staff photographer. One of those was FR Winstone a professional photographer with a studio in Bristol, and I hope to return to Winstone one day. If you like seeing these atmospheric photographs you are welcome to tell the editor or the writer direct if you know my email address and more will be published occasionally. In this first instalment there will be just three all in Devon and Cornwall.

Although the train gives great access to the countryside and allows rural dwellers to get into town it was not universally welcomed by some when the rails were spreading across the land in early Victorian times. The last image was taken from a poster in the then Great Western Museum who obviously did not want the GWR to build another line across The Cotswolds. In 1852 the O,W and W was already being built across the north end of the Cotswolds; and the existing line from Swindon to Gloucester and Cheltenham through the Stroud Valley had opened in 1845. The other lines that did get built started to appear from 1861 onwards. One can only speculate that the new line that was being opposed was being planned right across the middle of The Cotswolds through Northleach, Burford and Witney roughly following much of the later A40 road. The Witney Railway opened from Oxford to Witney in November 1861 and the line from Cheltenham to Andoversford Junction opened in June 1881. The 23-mile gap between Andoversford and Witney never received a railway and the railways at each end closed in the 1960s. The resistance to a line across The Cotswolds had been successful and the GWR probably spent its money elsewhere. The leader of the opposition and the person who put his name to the 1852 poster was William Henry Gwinnett (1809 – 1891) a Cheltenham solicitor. For the last few years of his life he appears on the Register of shareholders of the Great Western Railway.

The Bodmin Railway
Christmas Market
Jon Hird

The Bodmin Railway held the first of two Christmas Markets yesterday evening. The event was well attended and featured lots of interesting stalls as well as catering options. Small Prarie 5552 and Bagnall 'Judy' were platformed providing steam heat to the coaching stock.

Another market is due to be held on December 16th - info on the Bodmin Railway website.

Recent round-up
Steve Clark

Picture
With workmen gone and a fine day in prospect i thought i would take some tentative footsteps back into photography with my first trip out after my Op. Staying local, i managed my first visit to this location and fotted 43098 'Walton Castle' at the head of the 2C11 10.14 Plymouth to Penzance. 43186 'Cardiff Castle' brings up the rear. 21.11.2025, copyright Steve Clark.
Picture
Another location first for me and i was unsure what light would be available. With 2 Castle sets due to pass 15 mins apart, first up was the Westbound 2C26 13.40 off Plymouth with 43093 'Berkley Castle' leading with its Old Oak Legends vinyls. 21.11.2025, copyright Steve Clark.

The sun was fairly harsh as it was dropping but it is what it is!! 43186 'Cardiff Castle' leads 2P16 the 13.15 Penzance to Plymouth as it heads West - next stop Liskeard. The magnificent Glyn Valley forms the backdrop. 21.11.2025, copyright Steve Clark.

The Class 175 training runs have been a bit sporadic this week but one produced today so thought it rude not to grab a shot on my way home. This is the 5Z12 06.26 Plymouth to Plymouth via Totnes and Penzance. 21.11.2025, copyright Steve Clark.

There can't be many days left for me now until I will no longer hear or see these iconic trains arriving and departing at my local station. Yes the Network Rail NMT will pass through on its monthly visit and the Midland Pullman set twice a year if I'm lucky, but that's it and certainly not stopping and pulling away from here. This is the still clean 43004 leading 43156 on the Sunday 2E13 11.49 Penzance - Exeter St Davids pulling away from Ivybridge station with a certain Jon Hird on board giving his drone a day off. 23.11.2025, copyright Clive Smith.

After spending the last few weeks desperately photographing the HST's, my friend Oli and I decided it would be nice to have a trip on them instead. Seeking Railway Memories & Materials
Calling All Storytellers and Collectors

Hello! I’m a Cornish artist with a background in engineering and a passion for historical archives. I’m beginning a new art project that will explore the rich history of transport—particularly the railway—through mixed-media techniques.

To bring this collection to life, I’m looking for photographs, personal stories, and physical ephemera connected to transport and railway life. This can include:

  • Old photographs (especially those featuring people)
  • Letters and postcards
  • Tickets, maps, stamps, manuals, books
  • Any other items suitable for collage or reference

Whether your memories are long or short, small moments or big adventures, I would love to hear them. My aim is to create a series of artworks over the coming year, each paired with the stories and materials that inspired them. These will eventually be displayed together as a visual record of the personal histories behind the rise—and decline—of public transport.

I would be especially grateful for stories shared in a more personal way — either handwritten or as a voice recording. These forms add a unique character and warmth to the project, and help preserve the individuality of each contributor’s voice.

I am also very happy to meet in person or with groups to collect materials, or to interview and record stories directly for those who prefer to share them face-to-face.

The older the better — I’m particularly drawn to early railway life and the people who shaped it, travelled it, or simply lived alongside it.

If you have something to share or would like to contribute to this collection, I’d be thrilled to hear from you.

Let’s preserve these journeys together.

If you'd like to share your memories or stories, please get in touch with the CRS - [email protected] - and we will get you in touch.

First Bus pull out of Cornwall

Sad news emerged yesterday that First Bus plan to cease all Cornish operations by February 14th 2026.

The company runs a fleet of 85 buses and covers 14 services. It employs 275 members of staff amongst its depots in Falmouth, Camborne, Summercourt Penzance and Truro.

First Bus have offered to assist Cornwall Council with reassigning their routes to other operators.

Class 150's in decline
Guy Vincent

While class 150s are assured of a long-term future in the west country, on the other side of the Severn they are fast becoming harder to find with diagrams cut back and several examples having either been either stored or sent for scrapping.

One of the former TfW sets, 150231, has been saved for preservation by the Mid-Hants Railway and was on display in freshly applied Provincial Sector 'Sprinter' livery at August's Rail 200 event in Derby.

RHTT in need of a clean
Guy Vincent

Beneath the layer of thick brown grime is Freightliner loco 66549, currently on hire to Colas for the RHTT season.  This is the 3J41 working covering Reading-Newbury-Westbury.  Each year several locos from different operators end up this way but this is one of the grubbiest I've ever seen. Partner 66850 is slightly less dirty, having been partially cleaned.

Re: D1680 / Freightliner
Roger Geach

Regarding Karl's post yesterday - yes, 1680 was on the Par - Park Royal liner Mon to Thursday of that week at least, it was at times the same engine most of the week. Westerns  did not appear until they were air brake fitted, so when the train commenced it had to be an air brake fitted class 47. Sadly this service only ran for a couple of years as was noted.

You may like to make readers aware of my late friends web site which lists many west country workings. It's a very comprehensive data base mostly (but not all) of many sightings at exeter and plymouth. It is Diademfiles -   link below - set up by my late friend Steve Marshall, who sadly died recently.

You can do loco searches on it, a big number of observations. Only from 1960 to 1977 though. Not all workings are shown but many are, some days more then others, depends who was out and about. Take a look - click here.

Many thanks Roger, a useful link - we'd encourage readers to have a look.

NINETEEN SIXTY FOUR – PART 77
Carrog
Michael L. Roach

In Part 74 I took you on an extended visit to Corwen in Denbighshire on the Ruabon to Barmouth line. Heading north east from Corwen the next original station served the pleasant village of Carrog. The village is on the north side of the valley and the River Dee while the railway station and the A5 trunk road are both on the south side of the valley. The B5437 road connects the village to its railway station and the A5 by means of an ancient bridge over the river. The 5-arch bridge was built in 1660 and has survived several flooding incidents. Before the arrival of the railway the village was called Llansantffraid Glyn Dyfrdwy, quite a mouthful. The B5437 passes over the railway at the west end of the platforms of Carrog Station on its way up to the A5 road. To the west the line continues in cutting for some distance while to the east the railway approaches the station on a long low embankment. The station has and had two platforms; three sidings; a station building; a signal box; and a lot of character. It is one of my favourite stations on a heritage railway.

Just over half a mile to the east of Carrog Station the railway is right alongside the River Dee and high on the top of the cutting slope above the railway is Owain Glyndwr's Moat Mount. It was here on this mound that in 1400 Owain called his followers to begin the insurrection against the English. The mound lies just 50 metres off the A5 road.  Finally a reminder of why we are here in this part of Wales – it is because I made my only trip along the line on Saturday 4 July 1964 from Ruabon to Barmouth and return six months before closure. Carrog had closed to goods on 4 May 1964 and to passengers suddenly on Saturday 12 December 1964 due to flooding of the line after torrential rain. Buses replaced trains until the official closure date on Monday 18 January 1965. Carrog Station reopened to passengers on 2 May 1996 so will be celebrating 30 years next year.

Further to Michael's article, I noticed along the old Yealmpton branch line at Steer point and the foreshore of the River Yealm estuary there are lots of the GWR Plastic bricks lying about, so I would assume they came from the adjacent Steer Point brickworks. Photo attached.

Out and about - Thursday
Clive Smith

Well parts of Cornwall may have been gloomy with a dusting of snow but east Devon was blessed with sunshine again. I stuck to my home county rather than getting soggy and cold in foreign fields.

Many thanks Clive - a stark difference in weather between here and 'North of the river'!

Hayle DMU
Michael Forward

Picture
Just beyond Hayle Viaduct, on 13 June 1986, we see the 10.50 departure to Penzance - the 08.55 from Plymouth. I did not record the DMU numbers. Copyright Michael Forward.
Many thanks Michael, a classic scene. The DMU looks quite well loved with the red buffer beam and silver buffers, perhaps somebody can ID it.
A response quick-as-a-flash from Karl Hewlett:

The mystery DMU in Michael Forward's image is class 118 set 463 which was DBS 51305 and DMS 51320, its centre coach not shown in the formation here was TC 59472.  The set was new together but it did gain a few different TC's during its life including: 59476, 59480, 59482, 59538 and 59543.  This set is minus its L for Laira next to the number and also the destination blind, it was soon off to Bristol Bath Road for a summer sojern there before returning back to Laira but without 56472 and was later paired with 59482.

The main difference from the class 118 to the class 117 is by their curved top on the formers route indicator, the only other suburban DMU that had this was the class 127 Bed-Pan units.

Many happy memories of these groaning and growling out of Penmere including the telecom set P460 which for some reason was quieter, possibly had some more mechanical work than the others on r
epaint.

Many thanks Karl - top detective work.

Re: Class 47 at Hemerdon
Karl Hewlett

Regarding the unidentified BR Green class 47 taken by Micheal Roach at Hemerdon 28/07/70, his response to the 'Par to Park Royal Freightliner Service' article.  I blew up his image and I believe it is D1680 as this loco was fitted with a Clayton steam heat boiler (as the square roof vent in image), plus was a loco listed as carrying green with a full yellow panel.

Many thanks, Karl. D1680, later 47094 - scrapped December 1994. A pity it's no longer with us.
