An illusion ? from
Reading
Paul Roach

It was interesting to see this train seemingly balancing on the edge of the platform early one morning at Reading, one platform must be higher than the rest or I was seeing things. Great to see Kevin on the train for a little while. All the best to all at Trevingey!

Hello Craig
Hello Craig in answer to your enquiry of a Class 31431 standing on the Devon side of the Royal Albert Bridge I regret that I have no knowledge of this in my photo collection. However the same month the first Class 40 40122 arrived at Penzance on the 03.00 from Manchester.

Hi Keith
I hope you are well?
I've sent a Twitter link to you of 31431 apparently stood on the Devon side of the RAB with a short engineering train. Dated November 1985 I wonder if any of our readers remembers it. Did it start from St Blazey?
Another one for Rogers digest, unless it only worked to here wrong Road of course in a possession.
Best wishes , Craig
One for Roger or anybody else who can answer - many thanks Craig.

Vobster Light Railway
Brain Cuttell

 Hello,
I came across your CRS website while looking for photos of the Vobster Light Railway and i can add some details to the Vobster Light Railway section.
After the VOR closed in 1994 the exhibits were stored in the Radstock area for a few years. Henry & Mary Frampton-Jones moved to Derbyshire and set up the two-foot gauge Derbyshire Dales Narrow Gauge Railway at Rowsley at the Peak Rail site. They moved their locos and rolling stock from Radstock to Rowsley from 1998 onwards and began running trains at Rowsley in 2004 using ex-Vobster Ruston 487963 & Ruston 393325 'top & tailing' the red coach No2. DDNGR trains were suspended from 2015 due to Henry's health problems and most of the exhibits have since moved elsewhere since Henry passed away a few years ago. However, the ex-Vobster coach No2 remains at Rowsley and has been used by the Ashover Light Railway Society in 2022 who have laid a short narrow-gauge line here.
CRS Photos:
The yellow loco with the 'unnamed gentleman in the VLR vest' - This is Motor Rail 22070 with owner Henry Frampton-Jones in the VLR vest. Henry later moved this loco to Rowsley.
The photo of coach No2 has Henry again visible on the right.
The yellow loco in use with the coach is ex-BR Ruston 393325. Henry is acting as guard on the train.

I hope this info proves of interest,
                                                            Cheers,
                                                                         Brian Cuttell

Today and tomorrow we see trains from Penzance terminating at St Austell with bus replacement service direct to Plymouth and also a stopping service calling at Par- Lostwithiel- Bodmin-Liskeard. The crossover at St Austell is operational for crossig from the up to the down main line, which is quite rare these days.

Wheal Busy Crossing
Andrew and Diane Jones

Dear Keith and Valerie, I had to drop our car into Vauxhall at Scorrier today for some attention which required a 2 hour wait. The garage is only a few yards from Hallenbeagle adjacent the Cornish Mainline with a convenient occupation crossing and decent view of the railway.
Best wishes Andrew and Diane.
I forgot to say here is a link to Hallenbeagle Mine.   Hallenbeagle Mine - Explore Cornwall   It makes very interesting reading. The occupation crossing where I took todays photographs I believe was near the site of Wheal Busy signal box and level crossing, perhaps someone at the society can verify that?

TAKETHREE Bampton - Devon
Michael L.Roach
TAKETHREE – 17 November 1962                                                                Michael L. Roach
Some of you will remember my friend CBF as a signalman with Railtrack, Network Rail and the South Devon Railway. However in his younger days his ambitions lay elsewhere and in 1962 he was a would-be farmer and living on a farm near the village of East Ogwell, Newton Abbot and studying at Seale Hayne Agricultural College. This explains the first leg of our half-day excursion on the afternoon of Saturday 17 November 1962 which was by car. I drove to East Ogwell from my home in Plymouth  up the old A38 via the centre of Plympton, Ivybridge, Bittaford to pick up my friend from the farm. We parked the car at Newton Abbot Station and caught the 1.10pm local train to Exeter which consisted of three coaches hauled by a North British Type 2 diesel loco. We travelled up the Exe Valley line from Exeter to Bampton (Devon) by the train shown in the photos attached and watched it depart back to Exeter without us at 3.20pm SO. On Monday to Friday the train departed at 3.45pm perhaps to suit school times. The suffix Devon to the station name was necessary to distinguish this small town from Bampton in Oxfordshire.
We walked north for two miles from Bampton Station to Morebath Junction Halt on the Taunton to Barnstaple line  arriving just before the light faded. This was an interesting rural junction a short distance south of Morebath Village which is on the B3190 16 miles south of Watchet and just a mile outside the boundary of the Exmoor National Park. The village is also just over a mile east of the River Exe which here forms the boundary between Devon and Somerset. Hence the name of the company that built the line from Taunton to Barnstaple, the Devon and Somerset Railway. Morebath Junction Signal Box was directly opposite the fork in the three single lines approaching the box but each line became double for the last few chains. In theory three trains could have approached the junction at the same time but normally the train from Exeter would have arrived first so that it could reach Dulverton and make connection with trains in both directions on the Taunton to Barnstaple Route.
Our train out of the halt was in fact the next train up the Exe Valley line an auto from Exeter at 3.25pm off St Davids but this one went all the way to Dulverton reached at 4.43pm. A half hour at Dulverton saw two trains cross here: 7333 on the 4.10pm from Barnstaple and 6372 on the 4.20pm from Taunton. Quite impressively a dozen passengers alighted from the Taunton train leaving 35 to continue on towards Barnstaple. Both trains connected with our train home which was the 5.15pm auto to Exeter consisting of two auto coaches now being propelled by 1451, another regular on the line. Our train crossed 1442 at Thorverton on the 5.25pm Exeter to Tiverton. With their large picture windows and open saloons it was easy to see, in the dark, that the two auto coaches of the other train were crowded with passengers. On a November evening, with steam heating and in the dark there was only one word to describe the trip – atmospheric and priceless. The half day had cost me ten shillings and six pence in railfares and ten shillings in petrol; about one pound all told; but I only earned about £8 a week at the time.
[ This article has been posted here as a tribute to fellow enthusiast and great friend Charles Fennamore who passed away four years ago on 9 November 2018]

5800/1/2 Below we see three views of the preserved 0-4-2T number 1442 at Bampton Station. The train had arrived at 3.05pm with the 2.08pm from Exeter St. Davids and would depart for Exeter at 3.20pm. The cheap day return for the 21 miles had cost us 4 shillings and 9 pence each and the cost of a gallon of petrol at the time was about five shillings. It will be observed that the home signal had just been painted. The last two pictures were taken at one thirtieth of a second but by the time we reached Morebath Junction Halt it was no longer possible to take photographs.

Another significant move in reopening the Portishead branch to Passenger Traffic.
Dear Member,
PRG is delighted that the Secretary of State for Transport yesterday, 14th  November, accepted the Portishead Branch Line Development Consent Order (DCO) application.

The announcement is cause for great celebration. It has been a long and arduous journey to get to this most welcome point in the saga of reopening the railway to passenger traffic.

PRG also thanks and congratulates North Somerset Council staff for their hard work that resulted in the success of the DCO application, and Dr Liam Fox MP for his tireless work over many years to support the case for Portishead rail in Parliament and central government. Thanks are also owed to the three other local councils for their patience and support, and to WECA for also lobbying central government.

PRG members, and the people of Portishead and of Pill, are only too aware of the need for the town’s rail link with Bristol and beyond, the great benefits of which are well known and demonstrated in the DCO application. Urgent action is now required to push forward with construction so as to help solve the existing road congestion and resulting pollution problems, as soon as possible.

The acceptance of the DCO application is a prime example of local councils, regardless of political affiliation, working together for the common local good.

PRG will now turn its attention to what sort of stations and amenities can be provided at Portishead and Pill, to make this important new alternative transport offer as attractive as possible to those who currently use road transport.

Our Chairman, Alan Matthews, says, “This is a very welcome announcement. The Portishead line has always had a very strong business case and we are pleased that this was recognised by the Secretary of State. We now look forward to seeing the business case and full design so that the contracts can finally be put in place for construction of the line to start.”

Regards,
Peter

As can be seen from the style, this was the new station opened in 1954, but not to last long - it closed to passengers on the 7th September 1964 and to goods in May 1967. The original Portishead station had been about half a mile further on, the line turning from a northerly heading to bear east into the old station. The original station had opened on the 18th April 1867 (exactly 101 years before the Cheddar Railtour) and closed on the 4th January 1954. Copyright John Thorn.
Many thanks to Peter Maliphant for forwarding the above important and very pleasing news to us.

As usual, our extremely good friend and source of knowledge Guy Vincent has replied concerning the whereabouts of the Adlantes.
In answer to Keith’s recent question regarding the current position with the former Great Western class 180 ‘Adelante’ fleet (units 180101 - 180114) I did some research today and found out the following. The 14 class 180s were built by Alstom at Washwood Heath, Birmingham in 2000-2001 and used by Great Western Trains between 2002 and 2009 before going off lease and joining other operators. First Hull Trains used the 4 sets now with East Midlands Trains before replacing them with 5 new class 802 electro-diesel multiple units at the end of 2019. There are still 14 five car class 180 sets in existence and they are split between two train operators, East Midlands Trains having four: 180109 110 111 and 113. Grand Central use the other ten sets: 180101 102 103 104 105 106 107 108 112 and 114. A Real Time Trains search based on London Kings Cross and Grand Central arrivals / departures for Monday 14th November revealed seven 180s were due to form the day’s services. Units concerned were 180101 105 106 107 108 112 and 114. All are painted in Grand Central’s attractive black livery with lining and decals applied. I was unable to find any EMT workings using their sets passing either St Albans or Derby but there are several dozen services shown and I might have missed something. 180110 is currently formed of only four vehicles as reportedly carriage 56910 has been removed due to advanced corrosion. I am unable to recall why they were never diagrammed west of Plymouth but possibly due to route clearance issues or weight maybe? The carriages each weigh in at between 49.5 and 51.7 tons depending on specification. Hopefully this will be of interest. Regards Guy Vincent
Many thanks indeed Guy - you never fail.

Dennis Clarke
Hi Keith, I travelled down to Bristol today (12th November 2022)   to see my team Watford play at Bristol City. The game was very poor but my walk to the stadium was very interesting. Walking along the docks revealed a lot of old railway lines and wagons. I took several photos which I found intriguing and it’s great to see that the tracks etc have been left in place for all to see how it was in the old days. I have enclosed a few for the website. By the way, the game ended 0-0 !!

St Austell
Craig Munday

Hi Keith,
The Ground Frame at St Austell is in use at weekends in the coming weeks. I picked up the first shift on Sun 6th Nov. It was a blustery day with fierce showers which I largely avoided fortunately. The Ground Frame will be removed in 12 months time when Exeter takes over operation of the area. The crossover will remain and be controlled directly from the workstation. Turn back signals will also be provided.

A pair of Castle sets pass Tregarne near Probus on 4th Nov. Former favourites 43172 (Harry Patch) and 43093 Old Oak Common sweep by on long distance services. Grab them whilst you can as these Cardiff / Bristol services are likely to be the first IET replacements in the coming months.

Finally - day time up engineers train was too good to miss. I drove up to East Cornwall where the angle of the sun is more favorable to see 70817 head back to Westbury with 6C99 the Rail Delivery Train which had been at Penzance for a few days following a wagon defect. The light held across the landscape at Factory Road bridge near Menheniot as Colas Driver Mark Fabiano cruised the long train down the bank. Caradon Hill in the far distance had succumb to cloud. A rainbow finished off the composition (my, I push my luck at times)!

Cheers for now, Craig

Many thanks Craig - you saved the best 'til last - what a picture, rainbow and all.
