A must for railway enthusiasts, less so for anybody else. About 30 per cent of the exhibits relate to the 12-mile Newton Abbot-Moretonhampstead branch line, on which Bovey Tracey was an intermediate stop. The route closed to passengers as long ago as 1959. The museum is housed in what was the station's main building. Key exhibit is a scale model of Bovey station in its GWR heyday. The smaller of the museum's two rooms is given over entirely to railway artefacts. Other exhibits include Bovey-made pottery and the First World War. Local men who made the ultimate sacrifice are remembered. This museum is free and run by volunteers. For the above notes we are indebted to Bovey Tracey Heritage Centre.
With the above 'write up' there is no doubt that we must look into planning a visit to this very interesting museum into the CRS Outdoor Events for 2019.

The Great Bear
Roy Hart
There has been some correspondence concerning a question asked by Trevor Tremethick concerning 'The Great Bear'. Roy now adds his bit, a very valuable bit to the story.
Dear Keith,
I remember as a child seeing the Great Bear model at Truro museum. It was certainly there c1955-60. Of course the real engine had no link with Cornwall (it was not allowed west of Bristol) and the museum would certainly be more discriminating today about displaying such a thing of no local interest, so no surprise that it is stored. I would guess that the model was made in Cornwall and then donated to the museum. It is a pity, though, that the thing is not on display somewhere. STEAM at Swindon would be the best place, I suppose. There are endless problems connected with transferring objects between museums, though.
The nearest link between The Great Bear and Cornwall is that the 1924 rebuild was shedded at Laira between 1945 and 1952 (its withdrawal date) and was often seen in Cornwall. 'Rebuilding' was invariably a euphemism for getting a new engine past the Board of Directors: especially when the engine is named after the Chairman of the Board (Viscount Churchill). Mr Christison, former Loco superintendent of the Newton Abbot division, once told me that the only bits of the ' Bear' in the rebuild were the numberplates and the handrail knobs!

Roy         Thank you for that Roy, now the facts are now laid bare!!
Today at Purton
Ken Mumford
Because of those irritating overhead wires and their ugly supports, I decided to go out into the country west of Swindon.  The owner of Station Garage, Purton was very kind (including a cup of tea in a typical workshop stained mug) and we discussed the best location which You'll find in all these photos taken at the site of the former Purton station..

If you publish any of these photographs, I would I appreciate it if the Owner of Station Garage is acknowledged for his kindness in allowing me on his property (as well as the cup of tea!) - thank you.
Thank you for the pictures Ken.  N.B. Purton is on the Swindon - Gloucester route and therefore within the limits of the Freedom of the South West Rover - which sets our bounds.

The first passenger train ever to stop at Platform 4 at Filton Abbey Wood is welcomed by David Field.
Apologies for the late submission, but I have been at work in Derby all day and have only just returned to Bristol.

This morning 19 Nov 18, saw the return of rail traffic through Filton Abbey Wood station after the 3 week closure to enable the four tracking of Filton Bank.  It also heralded the first use by a passenger train of the newly constructed Platform 4 at Filton Abbey Wood.  The honour was bestowed on GWR's 150248 on the 2U00 0552 Bristol Temple Meads to Cardiff Central service, which arrived around 9 minutes late.

Apologies for some of the photos, they were all taken on my phone's camera so may not be the best of quality, but still capture this little piece of rail history.

Kind Regards

Dave Field

Many thanks David for your unique photographs of a special event in the history of Filton Abbey  Wood. I can't see many other photographers around!!

Great Bear
Trevor Tremethick

Recently Trevor Tremethick asked though this website and directly to 'STEAM Museum' at Swindon questions concerning the whereabouts of various artefacts once on display at Truro station.  Trevor had a reply from STEAM  and the enquiries that they have made have been inconclusive. We could say that  'the case remains open'!

Trevor writes - Interesting, however, is that there is a the model of 'The Great Bear' in store at Truro Museum. This is especially interesting as one of the full size  cabside number plates was sold at auction on Saturday (17th November 2018)  for £12,500! I was not the buyer! The original 'Flying Scotsman' nameplate (she is running with replicas these days) set a world record (I am told) at £64,500.

Must be nice to have that sort of money!
All the best from Barbara and Trevor.

Many thanks for that info Trevor.

Newton Abbot Fire
Then and Now
Roger Winnen

A month ago today Sunday 21st October 2018 fire destoyed the former Railway Carriage shed at Newton Abbot of which I took photographs only the day before this tragic fire. Yesterday I revisted the scene to see what was left! Nothing much as the demolition men had been on site.

Millbay Level Crossing
Clive Smith
Picture
Millbay Level Crossing, looking away from the docks towards the bank which led up past Millbay station. 1982. Copyright Clive Smith
An undated shot I took of the disused level crossing gate at Millbay Road in Plymouth . This was on the line that used to run behind Millbay station down an incline to the docks. I think the year was 1982 as temporary inflatable exhibition domes can be seen in the background on the site of what was Millbay Station and is now the Plymouth Pavilions entertainment and sports complex. For some unknown reason the gates escaped the demolition of the station in the mid 1970s and remained in situ for a few years after this photo. Keith and Roger have some excellent photos of the gates from 1972 and 74 in the archive section.

Plymouth historian Chris Robinson has a superb article on Millbay station on the following link -

https://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/news/history/plymouths-first-railway-station-last-1352958

Last week the hideous pedestrianised bridge that crossed Union Street where the railway bridge used to stand was taken down and plans are afoot to demolish the equally ugly Toys 'R' Us store where the signal box and tracks into Millbay used to be. Another excellent  article from the Plymouth Herald shows what used to be - https://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/news/history/before-plymouths-toys-r-built-878632

Finally a fascinating and detailed piece of research on the station by historian Brian Moseley can be found on this link - http://www.oldplymouth.uk/Railways-Plymouth%20Station%20(Millbay).htm

The ship continued to call at Plymouth for a further two years, but made her last trans-atlantic voyage in November 1961, calling at Plymouth on 16 November. This would end Plymouth's association with trans-atlantic travel. The ship was scrapped after this voyage. Halwill/Holsworthy
Colin Burges

Colin writes :- When I first went to Halwill, the station was much as it was when Roger photographed it in 1973.

A pal of mine had been a relief clerk and he would tell tall tales about life in the final years of the lines west of Okehampton, at whose stations he was often posted.

He said that as booking clerk at Halwill he would date the few tickets he was likely to sell and go and sit in the window seat at the Junction Hotel by the level crossing, where he could call out to anyone entering the booking office. I bought a drink and sat there; this story at least was plausible. The one about the train stopping short in the dark at Holsworthy and the old gentleman mistaking the parapet of the viaduct for the platform everyone would laugh at, surely without believing it, because the picture of someone standing with his case in such a perilous position was so absurd.

According to Railfuture, "Halwill Junction and Holsworthy are fortunate to have retained a bus service close to being a true rail replacement service." When I last caught the X9 from Okehampton to Bude, some years ago, the driver dutifully pulled off the main road, turned round where the station had been and rejoined the road, without picking up or setting down a soul!

Many thanks Colin for your letter and pictures.

Stranded passenger at Burngullow
My Father told me, which I believe to be a true, a tale of a passenger stranded at Burngullow.  It was during the war years, trains were slow and stations unlit.  A gentleman on an up service expecting the next stop to be St Austell got out when the train stopped (Presumably for a signal check) at Burngullow.  Quite how he got on to his intended station is not known!  One could have said "Oh for on board announcements, central locking and well lit stations"  but that was nearly 50 years ahead!!

N.B. Burngullow closed on the 14th September 1931 so would have been minus its nameboards anyway.

Many thanks to our man and his camera as Clive Smith takes a few pictures in difficult weather conditions at the start of the demolition of the Carriage Shed.  The serious fire in the building, supposedly caused by vandals three weeks ago, may have caused the bringing forward of  the work to remove the building which has since been in a dangerous condition. One wonders what the new Aldi Store which will replace it will look like?  Many thanks to you Clive.

Daves reference to Ellerhayes had me confused - just where is Ellerhayes?  Researching, using Google Earth, took me to 'Ellerhayes Bridge' - the road bridge just to the west of the site of Silverton station. If you take a look at Goggle Earth and this location you can still see the rails of the tramway which led out from the station towards Killerton serving a mill.

Plymouth 13.43 on the 16th July 1971 an unrecorded Western arrives with a down train Copyright Andrew Thompson. Note the class 47 has headed east and is standing by the old signalbox.
