1983
Newton Abbot
Clive Smith

It is now over 30 years since the remodelling of Newton Abbot station.
The first picture shows 45048 The Royal Marines arriving at platform 4 with the summer Saturday 16.00 Penzance - Liverpool on 9th July 1983. The platform is busy and note the row of postal trolleys to the left. The highly visible unattended baggage would nowadays result in instant tannoy warnings or a station evacuation although terrorism was just as prevalent back then. The wonderful semaphores to the west of platform 4 and the through road can be seen along with a selection of now vintage cars in the smaller car park of the day. The two Morris Minors were already vintage by this time.
Switching eastwards in the second picture, the 'road' is set on the semaphore gantry  as 45150 heads towards the magnificent east box with the 13.45 Penzance - Bristol TM on the 16th April 1983. Some peak enthusiasts in the front mark 1 coach show their enthusiasm for the class.
          Regards, Clive Smith
Many thanks indeed Clive.

Back in the late 50's it was a common practice for the train from Penzance to be strengthened by the addition of extra coaches at the back. The extra coaches were from a train originating at Kingswear or Paignton.  On arrival at Newton Abbot the Penzance portion would stop well up on platform 4 and the additional coaches already full of passengers would be propelled onto the back. It was all quite slick I recall. On one occasion, the operation was perhaps too slick as the 'thump' when the Paignton portion met the Penzance portion was considerable and the coaches 'rode up'.  On connection of the brake pipes normal position was achieved!  KJ

All stations!
A young man and his good lady set about visiting many of the closed stations in South Devon by car. There are some interesting but very fleeting views of various station sites but to be honest it would have been better had Paul Whitewick spent more time at the loactions.  They do have a good word for Colin Burgess and wish that they spent more time at Christow and interviewed the good man himself.  Anyway, form your own opinion.

Exploring
Portreath Incline
Peter Murnaghan

I was in Portreath yesterday (26th November 2018) and decided to see if it was possible to explore the incline, as Google maps seemed to suggest that it could be done, at least, the uppermost threequarters.   Sadly, that wasn't to be the case.  At the very top. near where the winding house would have been, is a promising private road with a few bungalows, named The Incline.  My picture shows how the road drops over the edge, just as the wagons would have done.  However, you can only venture down less than a quarter of the way, before very stern Private notices prevent further access.  One can get down about as far as an old underbridge, thought to have been a farm access between both sides of the incline.
The underbridge is now blocked off and the other, western side, is an impenetrable jungle of brambles surrounded by back garden fences.
I hope that my photos might be useful to include in the Gallery for the Portreath branch, as there aren't any recent views of the top of the incline.  And the situation is greatly changed since Laurence Hansford's exploration in 1964.
I hope this is useful.  Best wishes,  Peter Murnaghan.

Many thanks Peter

A footnote.  My father, who was in the home guard in WW2 told me that for exercise they used to have to run up the incline wearing full kit and carrying rifles.  KJ
Delightful Dawlish!!!

The 11.32 Paignton - Paddington stops at Dawlish today (17th November 2018) in appalling weather. The second picture just about shows the station and sea wall in the torrential downpour. A sharp contrast from Mark Lynam's pics from yesterday and not looking any better for Wednesday with gale force winds forecast.  (In fact the weather for the whole week looks pretty poor - but at least we get day light so why complain!!)

Weekend Trains - masses of information from
Karl Hewlett

Now that I have fixed a gremlin in my email account, I can provide members with some out of the ordinary movements this weekend.  The first is the visit of A4 60009 'Union Of South Africa' to Plymouth this Saturday on what could be its last trip to the South West, owner John Cameron is retiring all his locomotives into a museum after their boiler tickets expire which No 9's is in July 2019.  I can however say without divulging much, it may not be for ever, ever, but that's all I am going to divulge!

As usual when something like this makes a visit to our area something is going to just make it that slightly bit more difficult to move around using the train and in this case its buses between Par and Liskeard this weekend due to engineering works.  For anyone travelling up west of Par by train on Saturday here are the timings.

Daylight engineers movement for Saturday using Colas Rail which has been mainly class 70's with an odd class 66 hire in, no other details and headcodes are available at the moment.  The two that are likely to run in some sort of daylight.

Westbury Down TC to Liskeard
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/B33261/2018/12/01/advanced

However on Sunday there seems to be even less booked daylight engineering workings with just one, the first leaving Liskeard block isn't due off until 19:15pm and to speculate when they will actually leave you can realistically put several hours either side of their departure times, not helpful when the light has gone by 17:00pm.

A casual look at
Long Rock
Andrew Jones

Dear Keith, My wife and I had to attend an appointment at the West Cornwall Hospital today [27th November 2018]  (we are so very lucky to still have this hospital and St Michaels), so I thought a trip to see the recent GWR train depot at Longrock was in order.
There is an excellent car park behind Morrisons supermarket , accessed over the adjacent level crossing, £1 all day!
Although somewhat overcast I have attached a few photographs.
Stabled in the depot was an HST with power cars 43190 and ‘Prince Michael of Kent 43165.
The depot pilot 08410 was stationed just outside the depot rear doors and passing by on the ex 09.55 from Bristol Temple Meads arriving on time at Penzance at 14.39 was 150249.
Best wishes Andrew   Many thanks Andrew

Two pictures of Calstock Viaduct but taken at different times of the year. The first was taken in mid-winter on the 2nd January 1986. A service from Gunnislake crosses the viaduct on a rather dull grey day. The second picture was taken in mid-summer 1987 (date  unspecified) . The trees are in full leaf now and the sun is shining .

Mystery Power Car at Long Rock?
Karl Hewlett
Regarding the mystery HST power car at Long Rock, well this one is a bit of a brain teaser!   Interestingly 43190 was paired 43194 on a Laira to Long Rock stock move 5Z79, 21st November, then went back as back-to-back power cars 0Z77, as reported by Roger Salter on the CRS website.  Since then on the 23rd November 43190 has come down again with a rake of HST Mark 3's (ex OC32), that are for storage at Long Rock with the other power car being 43165, the rumour is the coaches are eventually destined for 'Hull Trains'.  Since then other than the usual 5Z stock movements (which there was one leaving Penzance for Laira at 21:00), I cannot see an 0Z77 return working for the power cars to return, so a logical thought is 43165 still at Long Rock somewhere out of view as well?
Regards, Karl (Friends Of Penmere Station).
  Many thanks Karl
Mystery of the Power Car at Long Rock is Solved!
Roger Salter
I am most grateful for Karl Hewlett suggestions about the HST Power Car which turned out to be correct. Visiting Long Rock this afternoon both power cars were attached to a set of coaches which must have been hidden away under cover in the depot for the last few days. The pictures below show the train in the reception road at Long Rock.
Many Thanks Karl

This weekend and next see Buses replace trains from St Austell to Plymouth and Par to Liskeard. I had hoped that the replacement bus would use the Glyn Valley to Liskeard to observe any work going on at Clinnick Viaduct however we ran via Lostwithiel and the three Taphouses. IETs were much in evidence at Plymouth today, a sign of the times to come. An IET 800306 named Harold Day & Allan Lenard Lewis arrived from Paddington suitably adhorned commemorating the 2500 Great Western Railway war victims of the Great War 1914-1918.

Salisbury
Guy Vincent

Choosing to support Salisbury traders in the run up to Christmas yesterday  (22nd November 2018) I was lucky enough to arrive at the station just before the Rail Head Treatment Train left platform 5 for the journey back to St Blazey.  3J13 0845 Westbury-St Blazey first of all runs across to Salisbury through the scenic Wylye valley before returning to Westbury.  Locos were a very dirty 66104 in revised DB livery and a relatively clean 66200 in original EWS colours, this loco having replaced 66067 on 20th.  Bay platform 5 is only used by empty DMUs and other non-passenger workings as there is no main aspect signal provided at the far end, only a ground position or 'dummy' signal.
Besides the daily visit of this train the lines between Salisbury and Warminster are cleaned several times each day by one of the Eastleigh-based MPV sets which reverses on the crossover to the south of Warminster station.
