By Mick House.

Once again we have been visited by the HST Network rail measurement train, coming from Old Oak Common this morning it departed at 05.28 ¾ three minuets late and arrived at Penzance 11.31 two minuets early. The train is heading for Paignton for an over night stop.
I was able to capture the HST at Gwinear Road and Wheal Busy Crossing. Just for a change I have used going away shots. Words and photos by Mick House.

Kingswear Branch

Also many thanks to Ross Griffiths for his research and to David Critchlow
The deviation
The picture below was purchased from e-bay by Paul Burkhalter for a few pounds as being 'Near Devonport'.  We all at first thought that it was of the Wearde  deviation in Cornwall under construction, but certain things didn't ring true.
However following publication on this website of the picture Ross Griffiths came up with the suggestion that it was not in Cornwall at all but in Devon on the Kingswear branch.
A little history courtesy of Wikipedia.

The line was built by the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway opening to Brixham Road station (Churston) on 14th March 1861 and on to Kingswear on 10 August 1864. The Dartmouth and Torbay Railway was always operated by the South Devon Railway and was amalgamated with it on 1 January 1872. This was only short-lived as the South Devon Railway was in turn amalgamated into the GWR on 1 February 1876. Brixham Road became a junction and was renamed "Churston" on 1 January 1868 when the independent Torbay and Brixham Railway opened its short line.
The line was single-track except for a crossing loop at Churston. It had been built using the 7 ft (2,134 mm) broad gauge but on 21 May 1892 was converted to 4 ft 8 1⁄2 inch standard gauge.
West of Greenway Tunnel the railway was originally carried across two creeks on low timber viaducts, that at Longwood being 200 yards (183 m) long and Noss being 170 yards (155 m). These were demolished after the line was moved inland around the creeks on 20 May 1923.
A letter from Ross Griffiths :-  Good morning all,
I've been studying the picture that was recently submitted by Paul Burkhalter that was causing a certain degree of intrigue. At first I too thought this showed the St Germans deviation under construction but a few things didn't add up. After doing quite a bit of research online I now believe that this is the construction of the Noss Creek deviation on the Kingswear line and the grand building in the background is actually Dartmouth Naval College.
This is a link to the national archive for the contract for RT Relf to carry out the works:
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C6030959
This link makes mention of signalling referred to as 'Noss Deviation':
http://www.s-r-s.org.uk/railref/ref-gw.php#262
Using Google maps the alignment of the line, the river and the college does seem to be correct (the tower in particular looks like that of the college as viewed from this angle).
All the best,
Ross.

Also on interest is the building seen on the hill in the distance. Picture courtesy Paul Burkhalter.

A note from Roy Hart. Dear Keith, Yes, Wearde loop indeed, taken from the up side of the main line immediately East of the box. In the background is the stretch of the Hamoaze known as 'battleship trot' and, fittingly, on it is the battleship HMS Howe, which was laid up at Plymouth from 1951 till 1959, when she was towed away for scrap. Truro Broad Gauge
Mike Roach

The West Cornwall Railway crossed the proposed route of the Falmouth Branch on the level and went down to Newham Station. To make it easier for passengers changing trains the West Cornwall constructed a narrow gauge loop from Penwithers down to the present station.  This would have been standard gauge when constructed and on the north side of the tunnel. On the south side would have been the broad gauge Cornwall Railway main line to Falmouth. One tunnel, 2 lines, different gauges. This situation only lasted a few years, and may have been unique. Surprisingly, the narrow gauge through the tunnel opened first in 1860 and the Falmouth Branch opened in 1863. There are good maps on Wikipedia of the sequence of railways in this area.
Also a reminder that today is the 150th anniversary of the first broad gauge train to Penzance - see report on the 12th October 2016 News.

Branksome
Mike Morant
Picture
Branksome hosted its own small servicing facility specifically for locomotives that had emanated from the Somerset & Dorset's metals but it had an Achilles heel insofar as the turntable was long enough to accommodate the 2P 4-4-0's and 4F 0-6-0's but was far too short for the S & D's 7F 2-8-0's and Stanier Black 5 4-6-0's. Those two classes were required to use the Branksome triangle as their turning method and here we see S & D 7F no. 53806 performing just such a manoeuvre in 1961.

WHAT DO YOU
THINK?

Paul Burkhalter
Hi Keith,
I purchased this picture for a few pounds. It
said “near Devonport”, but I am thinking it actually shows the deviation line being built to the east of St Germans viaduct (looking west).  There were certain things which didn't ring true in the original picture even after flipping it. However it did seem to be possibly the deviation at Wearde with the Lynher river and the Nottar viaduct. But how wrong can one be.  See the answer on the 21st October Newspage.
Picture
The original picture from Paul. Copyright
Roger Winnen and I think that the picture above is reversed? Below is a 'flipped' version which seems to tie in better with maps.
Picture
The above picture 'flipped'. To the left, beyond the shed in the field could be the Lynher River, and close above the top of the shed the Nottar Viaduct.

Glastonbury
Mike Morant
Picture
Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway 'C' class 0-4-4T No. 1202 was built by Avonside Engine Co. In 1877 and is depicted here at Glastonbury whilst in charge of a passenger turn form Highbridge to Evercreech Junction and possibly even through to Templecombe. The van at the rear looks interesting and if anyone should wish to comment upon the rolling stock then please do so. This undated negative was taken in 1931 or earlier as that was the year when 1202 was withdrawn from service. Thank you to Chris Osment for being the first to point out which working this is. Chris Knowles-Thomas has written these notes regarding the two coaches: "This is S&DJR stock built at Highbridge - a 46ft lavatory compo and a brake third. These coaches exhibited a mixture of LSWR and MR features. The S&DJR stock was shared out betwen the SR and LMS in 1930." Russ Garner: "The cleanliness of the locomotive livery (compared to that taken by Casserley on 5 July 1930) hints at a late July or early August 1930 view. The Highbridge-built carriages are still in blue livery but the pale blemish at the bottom right of the body hints at it being designated to the LMS. Leading gas-lit vehicle is a lavatory composite with coupe end. The brake third is one of the latter built with additional torpedo roof vents over the luggage end whilst The horsebox ringing up the rear has the correct appearance to be of S&DJR ownership, displaying the necessary characteristics for the 18ft design. The dark aperture suggests that the upper sliding door is partially open, which hints that no animal is being conveyed – also its appearance at the back of a train lends itself to being empty as general practice was to attach a loaded horsebox at the last minute, usually next to the engine (circumstances might dictate otherwise). It is not known where these vehicles were stored; if based at Highbridge the train in question would therefore be conveying it to a station for future use."

Picture
Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway 'A' class 4-4-0 No. 67 of 1896 vintage is depicted here awaiting departure from Bournemouth West. This shot has given me enormous pleasure and one hopes that you enjoy it as much as I. As I have little knowledge of the pre-Fowler era on the S&D it came as a surprise to see that the loco's number is in the form of cast figures attached to the rear splasher rather than the cab side sheeting. The livery is a joy to see and the rolling stock also. Additional background : This image is dated between 1910-1913 and shows No.67 with the 4.05pm semi-fast service to Bath." Reboilered in December 1907 with the “H” class boiler No.67 was unique in having its safety valve encased. No.67 awaits departure from platform 3 whilst No.15 occupies platform 4. Note, in 1935 platform numbers 1-6 were reversed. Behind the tender is a 16ft Midland horsebox to diagram D397 followed by an S&DJR set comprising brake third, a pair of lavatory composites with luggage ends and another brake third whilst, at the rear, is a six-wheel Midland passenger brake van to diagram D529.

Cogload
yet another angle
John Cornelius
Hi Keith, I was interested in the pics of Cogload from 'a different angle'. by Andrew Jones.
So I've looked out a few slides I took there on Easter Saturday 31-3-1975,which gives a another angle of it, when most London trains were hauled by class 52 locos.
However, before I went onto the flyover I had a word with the duty signalman, and told him what I intended doing, so he was aware of where I was. After taking several photo's, I returned to the box to let him know when I had finished on the flyover, but continued taking pics by the signalbox for a while.
enjoy,  cheers JOHN C.

Work commences at Gwinear Road on new access routes for the Farming Community
Roger Winnen
For a number of years a temporary speed restriction has been in force for trains at Gwinear Road Level Crossing. The large articulated lorries of today's standards make frequent visits to the Riviera Produce Market Garden Depot adjacent to the level crossing at Gwinear. The extreme length of some of these vehicles on occasions and when turning into the depot could foul the crossing, so a speed restriction has been in force. Hopefully this could soon been a thing of the past with Riviera Produce being granted planning permission for an extension to their site combined with a new access point further away from the crossing. On the other side of the crossing Roseworthy Barton Farm has be given planning permission also for a new access road situated situated some distance back from the crossing, currently its to the left of the crossing as you approach the barriers. On a visit to the site today I was informed by a local lady that the Road Crossing will be also closed for a month.

Cross Country Franchise
Derek Buttivant

Hello Keith.

It may be of interest for the CRS web site that under the new Cross-Country franchise awarded to Arriva, the company undertake to fit the XC HST fleet with power doors.  This indicates an intention to operate the HSTs beyond 2019 and, presumably, to make interior modifications to comply with disability access regulations which come into force from 2020.   Similar modifications would also be needed if, as is expected, some GWR HSTs are retained in shorter formations to operate beyond 2019.  In the latter case, the cost of modifications would apply to fewer vehicles but the XC HSTs are likely to continue as full-length trains.

Kind regards,  Derek

Of very great interest, many thanks Derek

Chippenham sports, to us, a new footbridge complete with lifts. The former down platform has been trackess for many years with only the island platform remaining in use. 6th October 2016 Copyright Roger Winnen

As can be seen for this view of the London End of Chippenham station much of the original architecture remains in place, The porters once used to shout "Chippenham, change for Calne". However those days are long gone, the Calne branch which closed in 1965 used to terminate in a bay where the down main line now runs - the bay later being extended to form a through platform. 6th October 2016 Copyright Roger Winnen

I have included a panoramic view of the junction, taken adjacent the war time gun emplacements. I often walked from Taunton along the tow path of the canal, to this spot, on those amazing weekends in your youth, where there seemed to be endless amounts of time.
The second is a Warship/Hymek combination, which was fairly rare, the Hymek was being dragged, I presume to Laira for attention.
I really didn’t realise how lucky I was back then, the activity was riveting, so much so that I did not notice a curled up adder by my side for the duration!
 Best wishes Andrew                      Many thanks

A most unusual view of Cogload as down train from Paddington headed by a class 47 is about to pass under the Bristol line perhaps with the tail end of down train from Bristol still on the flyover. 1970 Copyright Andre Jones
Picture
An enlargement of the above in which one can see Cogload signalbox in the distance and the 'board' pulled off for an up train for Paddington. Had this train been slightly earlier we might have seen three trains in the same shot! 1970 Copyright Andrew Jones.

Same day, same place we spot a Warship hauling a Hymek pssibly for attention at Laira. 1970 Copyright Andrew Jones
