Cornish Cromptons
Bill Elston, Martin Scane, Paul Barlow, Roger Winnen, Jon Hird & Clive Smith

On Sunday 28th September, with West Coast Railway Company still suffering from a lack of mainline, air-braked steam locos, the decision was made to replace the booked steam loco for the Railway Touring Company's 'Royal Duchy' railtour with a pair of Class 33's. 33025 and 'Slim Jim' 33207 did the honours, with assistance from 47812 on the rear.

The below text from Neil Phillips:

The unusual sight of Class 33s at Par on today's (Sunday's) 'Royal Duchy' railtour was not to be missed - I'd never previously seen the type in Cornwall at all so this was a first for me. There was even a little variety in the locomotives' body widths!

33025 was introduced as D6543 in February 1961 and has had an interesting career, acquiring the name 'Sultan' in August 1981 which it carried until January 1989. In the late 1990s 33025 and 33030 - the only '33' to receive EWS red/gold livery - found themselves briefly moving wagons around the Aberdeen area - a considerable distance from the Southern Region they were built to serve! Once acquired by WCRC 33025 gained the name 'Glen Falloch' in October 2006, which it no longer carries.

33207 (D6592) was one on the last 12 Class 33s constructed, to a narrower body profile to work the Tonbridge - Hastings line. It has been claimed that the amount of difficulty BRCW encountered in reducing the overall width from 9' 3" (2.81m) to 8' 8" (2.64m) for this final batch of Type 3s contributed to the company's financial woes and eventual collapse. In September 1989 and presumably due to the numerical similarity,  33207 received the 'Earl Mountbatten of Burma' nameplates and crests from 33027, which it carried for 7 years. In WCRC ownership it was named 'Jim Martin' in January 2006.

Re: S&D 200 - The 1975 Cavalcade
Paul Negus

Hi Jon and Roger

Michael's recent postings (click here) gave an interesting look at the variety of engines on display in 1975. Herewith my photos of some of those same locos attending The Great Gathering in this 200th Anniversary Year.

Firstly, Sir Nigel Gresley looking splendid as 60007 with commemorative speed plaque affixed to the cabside.

Then a classic Midland locomotive, No 1000, with compound expansive steam working and a shot of its magnificent Midland Railway Coat Of Arms. The loco is commemorated locally in Derby on the sign of The Brunswick Inn.

Finally, although Hardwicke did not appear, another of Webb's designs did. The splendid Coal Tank is one of my favourites as it displays the beauty of Victorian locomotives with its classic proportions topped by that tall chimney! I last saw her decades ago in Penrhyn Castle where the National Trust had given her a home after the Bangor Shed Master had succeeded in saving her from scrapping.

This is the only LNWR locomotive currently operational, thanks to new owners The Bahamas Locomotive Society. (The National Trust has donated the Coal Tank to the Society). It was in steam and used to demonstrate operation of the Litchurch Lane turntable - probably because it was the only loco in steam that was under the 50 Ton weight limit of the turntable!

Diesel Day at Bodmin
Plus some thoughts on the 200th Anniversary of rail
Andrew & Diane Jones

Unquestionably the class 47 is the face of archetypal 1960's diesel electric design, bringing together a standardised layout combined with the simplicity of electric transmission.

In terms of affection amongst the railway fraternity other designs such as the class 52's are more prominent, although they posed reliability problems from the start and as with most mechanical transmission systems there were more moving parts to go wrong!

Incidently talking about reliability, i cant help thinking that the class 175 dmu's are history repeating itself and I sometimes wonder that accepting hand me down infrastructure is sensible, especially as these units do not have the capacity of the hst's they are replacing and are already 25 years old and have a history of unreliability, possibly why Wales finally replaced them, only time will tell.

So it's fair to say that out of the many early diesel designs, diesel electric was always going to win in the race to replace steam.

512 class 47's were built making them the most numerous class of British main line diesel locomotives.

(To put this in context the Stanier Black Five totalled 842 and BR was responsible for the manufacture of almost 1000 steam locomotives to its own design between 1948 and 1960.)

Class 47 production spanned the mid 60's from 1962 to 1968. With a power output of 2,750, later derated to 2,580 bhp to improve reliability and a route availability of 6 or 7 the class was versatile both in its capability for freight and passenger duties.

From Wikipedia as of July 2024, 76 locomotives still exist as class 47s, 32 of which have been preserved including six maintained with mainline running certificates. A further 33 were converted to class 57s between 1998 and 2004. These statistics might well have changed recently so they are only a guide and there are many enthusiasts out there that probably have updates.

Progress has not been kind, with diminished freight traffic, especially coal, we will not see their like again and unfortunately time is not on their side, reliability is becoming an issue as we have seen with the 57s on the sleeper.

Over the years there has been much discussion about the 1955 modernisation plan with criticism of the huge waste of resources and the early scrapping of many modern steam designs and non standard diesels, some with service lives of less than 5 years, however the 47s have given sterling service and still have the potential to head turn in our rather bland and sterile railway environment.

Moving on, this being the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington railway (although wooden plateways existed in the 1600's), it is interesting to see how far technology has improved our transport options.

Michael Portillo, a champion of railways as a whole, gives a good potted history in a recent BBC documentary on the 200th anniversary  and is well worth watching.

Generally in engineering terms prime movers such as steam and the internal combustion engine have not moved on since their invention, yes they have become more efficient but in reality until the intervention of electronics and new materials Stephenson and Nikolaus Otto would easily recognise many aspects of current products.

Even in the world of electric transmission, London had a fully working underground system in 1890 with the majority of services electrified by 1905 and how many of us remember the battery powered milk float!

So what of the future for our rail system?

Without freight there are many uncertainties.

HS2, even amongst die-hard railway enthusiasts, seems a colossal mistake given a fraction of the costs could improve rail connectivity throughout the UK.

Diane and I have been driving an electric car for 6 years now, and in that period even friends that thought we were raving mad are now considering embracing the new technology.

Recently I took our car for its annual service. The technician said it's embarrassing to charge a customer £200 when there is so little required to check; no oil change, regenerative breaking reducing brake wear to a minimum, no clutch, no gearbox, led lights, no coolant as we know it! Is anyone listening in the railway fraternity?

Railways certainly put Britain on the map, we led the world, but regulation and design is now impacting on its very survival.

Embracing pure electric traction has always been constrained by cost in the uk, unlike the rest of Europe, battery technology is as rare as the Bodmin beast especially as its relatively simple to retrofit in the average locomotive or powercar.

We are now seeing the next level electric road vehicles reminicent of 1920's  challenging the very existence of our extensive rail network with the price of a rail ticket amounting up to six times the cost per mile of an EV.

Without a drastic reappraisal it's conceivable that we could even face another Beeching.

Railways were built to move large quantities of commodities and people from A to B cheaply at relatively slow speeds, but their vulnerability lies in the size of the UK.

It is still economic in countries like Australia and the USA to move freight over vast distances but try and transfer that concept to say moving Imeries waste sand to the south east and unbelievable as it may seem, there is no appetite to explore the options.

We desperately need victorian entrepreneurs and invention....

Returning to my original coverage of the class 47, to some extent it illustrates our love of the past, but until our railways catch up with the 21st century the vulnerability of running the sleeper with life expired locomotives poses the question - in reality is there really a future? And, will we be celebrating the 300th anniversary of our railways - or will it be the 100th anniversary of the EV!

NINETEEN SIXTY FOUR – PART 67
S & D 200 – The 1975 Cavalcade

Michael L. Roach

In Part 44, published on 22 May 2025, a first look was taken at the 200th anniversary of the modern railway when all the various components came together for the very first time in County Durham with the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway on 27 September 1825. I explained how I was there in 1975 timing my visit to see the cavalcade. In this part I showcase some more views of the engines in the 1975 Cavalcade which took place at Shildon on Sunday 31 August 1975 as the engines passed before me, and hundreds of others, in a cutting between Shildon and Heighington Stations, which was part of the original route.

On 1 December 1965 there were just two Manors left, both at Gloucester Shed, and both withdrawn that month. The two were 7808 and 7829 with both being withdrawn on 31 December 1965. 7808 was purchased for preservation the following month while 7829 travelled down to Newport to be scrapped at Cashmore's. In the days during which you could just walk into a railway depot and take photographs - Exeter Stabling Point (shed) on an autumn Sunday morning - 26 September 1971 - full of locomotives. I vaguely remember that there was around 30 locomotives on the shed but it was completely quiet and no one to be seen. Nearest the camera are 7657 862 6333 and 1069. The coal in the foreground was not for steam loco's but for heating the mess rooms! Apologies for the quality - it was the only camera I could afford at the time! Copyright Keith Gale.

NINETEEN SIXTY FOUR – PART 66A
The Lynton and Barnstaple
Michael L. Roach

When I completed Part 66 about the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway I included a log of a typical journey along the line from the Lynton end in the 1930s, but I could not find the details, which turned up soon after the article was submitted. The 9.25am train off Lynton was hauled by Manning Wardle 2-6-2T “Taw” and consisted of two bogie coaches and two empty bogie wagons weighing a total of 25 tons. Taw had hauled the first passenger train on 14 March 1898. The 9.25am was driven by Alfred Nutt of Yeo Vale, Barnstaple (1878 – 1964); in 1921 he was a fireman on the L and B, and he was also a fireman in 1901 and 1911. The log is repeated here:
Picture
I also include with this addendum scans of the July 1922 Lynton and Barnstaple timetable which was probably the last summer before the takeover by the Southern Railway which itself was formed in 1923 under the Railways Act of 1921 known as The Grouping. It shows that the L&B exaggerated the length of the line to 19½ miles so that from the Barnstaple end the mileage of most of the stations was a nice whole round number. It would be interesting to see timetables, summer and winter, from the 1930s if anyone has them.

Many thanks as ever, Mike.

A week of firsts in West Cornwall
Craig Munday

An Indian Summer spell has highlighted the super colours in the trees, and provided an ideal backdrop for the inaugural Class 175 training trips into West Cornwall. I promised Jon I wouldn't overdo the class 175 subject, as they will become the norm after a while. Least to say the ATW livery certainly pops more than the GWR dark green.

I was fortunate to capture 5Z35 heading west a touch late passing 2P21 heading for Plymouth. The Castle set terminated at St Austell with door problems.

Also pictured is another inaugural run! This time GBRf take over the RHTT working in the South West from DB. The train is pictured at Penzance with contrasting liveries on 57303 / 310. The programme starts in earnest 1st Oct, unfortunately under darkness as Taunton Forwater is now the base for the train.

I've included the first visit of the train in 2007 with Rebecca and Demelza in charge in 2007. Recognise the loco design?

Many thanks indeed Craig - a super lucky shot of the 175 and some lovely night shots of the RHTT. More on that below..

The RHTT
Karl Hewlett & Roger Winnen

2025's southwest RHTT is this year being covered by GBRf using Class 57's, rather than the more familiar DB Cargo Class 66's we have become used to.

Sadly, all trips to the west are scheduled to be run after dark with no intermediate stops.

The below information is from Karl Hewlett and we are thankful to him for the schedules:

Sat 24/5/25 to 13/12/25 3S13 Westbury to Fairwater Yard via Salisbury

Sun 18/5/25 to 07/12/25 3S11 Fairwater Yard to Penzance

Sun 18/05/2025 to 07/12/2025 3S12 Penzance to Westbury via Paignton and Okehampton

Mon to Fri 19/05/2025 to 08/12/2025 3S13  Westbury to Fairwater Yard via Salisbury

Mon to Fri 19/05/2025 to 12/12/2025 3S11 Fairwater Yard to Penzance

Mon, Wed 19/05/2025 to 08/12/2025 3S12  Penzance to Westbury via Paignton, Crediton and Whatley Quarry

Farewell to Pathfinder Railtours

Picture
A statement from Pathfinder Railtours - please click for an enlargement.
A sad day in the railway world today as Pathfinder Railtours have announced that they are winding up their business from the end of this year. Pathfinders have of course organised many, many excellent railtours taking passengers all over the UK behind almost every imaginable type of locomotive. They will be sorely missed.

My good friend, Colin Pidgeon, took these photos down at Swindon station.  It looks as though the fox was bored with what he saw.

Well, won't many trainspotters - 'Flying Cucumber' after 'Flying Cucumber'??

Colourful skies and golden rails
Jon Hird

We are entering the time of year when the days grow shorter and the county becomes awash with colour - the green tones of summer turn to browns and oranges, and the skies hold dramatic firey shows in the mornings and evenings. A few photographs below trying to make the most of the precious few weeks when there is still some useable light in the early evenings.

Weekend Belmond & Goonbarrow Gloom!

A week of contrasting light in Cornwall. A mixed forecast with a promise of a bright Sunday morning to coincide with the Belmond Britannic Explorer on its second revenue operating trip. 66748 wasn't provided this trip, 66701 was which made a colourful sight with 66744 in the latter GBRf livery. The first Class 175's to Penzance
Tony Shore, Joe Birchall, Roger Winnen, Roger Salter, Mark Lynam & Jon Hird

Monday 22.09 saw the first trip west of Liskeard for GWR's new (to them!) class 175 units. Units 175009 and 175114 ran as 5Z12, the 0751 Plymouth - Plymouth via Penzance. The unit later did a second run through Cornwall. We're advised that the purpose for these trips is for guard and driver training, and two units have been used so that they can use the selective door unlocking on platforms where the full length of the train would not fit.

More trips are planned for the rest of the week - times on RTT for those interested (for example, today - run 1, today - run 2).

Saltash Scenes
Simon Smith

Picture
My farewell to the HSTs, got the one on the left (43098 tailing 43187) from Plymouth to Saltash and got the one on the right (43042 leading 43198) back. The one on the left had made extra stops as the Gunnislake branch was suspended for a track inspection, so it was a bit tight, but meant that I got this unforgettable shot. I grew up on the ECML, I'm unlikely to make it to Scotland, so this will I think be it. Fittingly last built 198 was on the back of my last trip. Hadn't completely planned Saltash but it worked well, tagged into a free 1st class return to Plymouth, paid by GWR Rewards points! 20.09.2025, copyright Simon Smith.

NINETEEN SIXTY FOUR – PART 66
The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway
Michael L. Roach

What is the most sorely missed railway line in Devon and Cornwall? Near the top of some enthusiast's list would be a line that probably no living enthusiast has ever travelled on from end-to-end, because it closed 90 years ago this month. That railway line is the narrow-gauge Lynton and Barnstaple where the last trains ran on 29 September 1935. The L and B Association's Autumn Gala and Annual Meeting are held each year on the last weekend in September and this year will take place on Sat/Sun 27/28 September 2025. The line was more than 19 miles long and was originally 597 mm gauge but is now 600 mm gauge. Unfortunately the last owners the Southern Railway could not make it pay and closed it completely in 1935. This was a great shame as if the line had survived four more years to September 1939 it might have survived the Second World War and with continuing fuel shortages after the war to the early 1950s when the preservationists might have stepped in much earlier taking their cue from the very similar lines in Wales that were saved.

As I was writing this article I had also been bringing along a story about the Cambrian Coast and a trip on the equally wonderful and dramatic Vale of Rheidol narrow-gauge line, and that also made me think about the Festiniog Railway. All three railways were approximately the same gauge. How did the V of R come to survive and the L & B not survive and be closed 90 years ago. There is no obvious reason at first glance. All three lines started at a locally important coastal town. All three made their way up into the hills on steep gradients. Two terminated in relatively isolated small towns, Blaenau Festiniog and Lynton, but the third (the V of R) terminated in a remote hamlet (Devils Bridge) with a small fraction of the population of the two towns. All three railways lost their original purpose long ago and yet it was the V of R that survived the easiest. Why was that and could the L & B have survived had it had different owners in the 1930s.  The L & B was the longest at 19¼ miles with a journey time of 1½ hours and the V of R was 11¾ miles with a journey time of 1 hour. The V of R has been a summer-only operation for a very long time operating between one and four trains a day in the 1930s according to the day of the week. Perhaps the Southern Railway should have operated the L & B as a summer-only operation and tried to develop somewhere in the middle as a tourist hot-spot, for connecting motor bus tours of Exmoor. If Blackmore Gate had been selected for this role the excursionists would have had nearly an hour and 11¾ miles of narrow gauge travel from the Barnstaple end and 7½ miles from the Lynton end. The railway could have operated a round-robin for car owners parking at Blackmore Gate; by train to Lynton; bus or walk to top of the cliff railway to Lynmouth; and then bus across Exmoor from Lynmouth back to Blackmore Gate.

In this short piece I have said little about the history or operation of the line because there is plenty available in books and online. On 29 September I hope that we will remember the Lynton and Barnstaple and pray that one day in the future conditions will be right for the line to be resurrected in its entirety. I finish with a log of a typical journey along the line in the 1930s in which the train left Lynton one minute late and arrived Barnstaple two minutes early.

Many thanks as always Mike - and don't forget that we have a CRS outing to the L&B this coming Saturday - more details in the outdoor events section.
