Bathpool
Bill Elston

Good afternoon Roger,

I was over at Bathpool this morning (27.09.2024) for the Mayflower railtour from Birmingham to Plymouth.

From Bristol it was headed by Castle Class locos CLUN CASTLE and EARL OF MOUNT EDGCUMBE, and shadowed by class 20s
20189 and 20142.

Please see photos.

Best wishes,

Bill Elston

Thunderer at Boscarne
Andrew & Diane Jones

Its a rare treat to witness 2 class 50's over the weekend and congratulations must go to the Bodmin Railway for organising a highly authentic event.

Unfortunately the weather closed just before the arrival of 'Thunderer' 50008, but somehow I managed to keep the lenses dry.

I pondered while observing the run round just how many fully loaded wagons could be handled on the bank, clearly today's unloaded consignment barely tested the power of 50008, but as ever adhesion both up to General and down to Bodmin Road would have been crucial.

Has anyone done the sums?

I’ve travelled over the viaduct many times as indeed many CRS members no doubt have as well whilst enjoying that spectacular view of the River Nidd estuary. On Saturday 28th September I actually managed to view the structure from the road, just missing a train passing over. It’s a wonderful piece of engineering. Copyright James Bown.
Many thanks James - it's a superb structure in a superb part of the world. Thanks for sending in your photo.

Class 50 heaven!
Craig Munday

In what will be the busiest weekend for the CRS galleries this year, steam and diesel wise across the South West, here are some Bodmin Gala pictures for you too!

I was employed as the Ground Frame operator for 50008 leaving the mainline at Bodmin Parkway on Thursday 26th. I must praise my Delivery Unit (DU) colleagues from the Permanent Way and S&T who spent considerable hours on the equipment in recent weeks. many folk will assume moves "just happen", things are very much prepared for in advance, however.

Myself and colleague Sam Clark did a dummy run on Wednesday (away from the cameras) and things worked well. This bode well for the actual transfer on Thursday when Liam Thornton and I ensured the movement was made as expediently as possible. The 30 min timetable allows little wiggle room for issues on the day.

The 50 could be heard powering up from Brownqueen tunnel, and arrived shortly afterwards. The Annetts key was obtained from our colleagues on the Exeter, Mid Cornwall Workstation, and the points set for the move. Once we were satisfied all was well, the Signaller authorised the move into the exchange siding.

I was around on Friday too, and enjoyed the last run as the shadows grew. Sun and shadows dappled the sides of the class 50s and mark ones as we climbed the bank from Parkway. The acrid exhausts punching into the blue skies above. The surges of power from both locos was awesome, and cast my mind back to the 18.12 from Penzance on Summer evenings in the 1980s which often produced a pair of class 50s. 27.09.2024, copyright Craig Munday.

Western Notes from 1977
Guy Vincent

I and several others have been avidly following and enjoying Roger's excellent coverage of the last couple of months of 'Western' loco operations in Devon and Cornwall.  Such gems as Western Prince's last ever working, the 'Western Tribute' tour and back-up pair of '52s' passing through Exeter, photos of which have rarely been published.

Following conclusion of the BR organised 'Western Tribute' tour at Paddington late on Saturday 26th February 1977 here are the locations of those class 52 locos that were extant on Monday 28th February 1977.

In the early hours of 27th February, D1013 and D1023 ran light to Swindon works where D1023 was detached. This loco was destined for the NRM, York.  D1013 continued to Bristol Bath Road and, later in the afternoon, onto Laira.

On 2nd March 1977, D1010, D1013, D1041 and D1048 were moved from Laira to Newton Abbot locomotive works for secure storage pending their eventual sale to preservationists.
  • D1010  Sold to Foster Yeoman Ltd and moved to Merehead Quarry on 7th July 1977.
  • D1013  Sold to R Holdsworth and moved to Torbay Steam Railway, Paignton on 6th June 1977.

D1009 was moved from Laira to Swindon Works on 1st June 1977. Engines sold to a Dutch Salvage firm.

British Rail offered at least three more Westerns for sale by tender to prospective preservationists viz: D1001, D1005 and D1009 but in each instance the bids were rejected.

As at September 2024 the remaining seven Westerns can be found at the following locations.

'Two Castles to Plymouth' - but only one in sight! A slight misquoting of the Peter Handford Argo recording, and a pity that Clun's exhaust covered the second engine. Going like the clappers. Taken from Plymbridge Road Overbridge with Plympton Station site very overgrown as you can see. A large clump of Buddleia precluded a shot from the right. Nice to see the Mayflower headboard. Picture
Had to resort to the loft again because of a delivery that could not be re-arranged. Shot taken from about a quarter of a mile. Although I have taken double headers from here before, with the foliage and the washing lines I don't think it is any longer feasible. What you see here is the only space available before the train plunges behind the bushes and trees. I send this only because the exhaust effect was quite nice, but I still haven't managed a decent shot of the Earl. I am honest enough to show you my failures, so use it or throw it as you see fit! Many thanks indeed, all of you - great to see some GWR engines back on home turf.

Truro Goods Yard Demolition
John Roberts

Jon, further to my item which you published on 19th April (click here and scroll down), Cornwall Council has now received a new planning application PA24/06876 to demolish the remaining historic buildings in Truro Goods Yard:

https://planning.cornwall.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?keyVal=SJALQLFGM2800&activeTab=summary

The most interesting document is the Heritage Desk-based Assessment which includes a description and several maps showing the development of Truro Station since 1840.

Regards, John Roberts.

Many thanks for bringing this to our attention, John. There certainly is a wealth of information within that link - well worth a look within the 'documents' section. It will be interesting to see whether Cornwall Council deem the heritage of the site of sufficient importance to reject the application.

Mayflower around Laira
Trevor Tremethick

Hi Keith and Roger

Three from me for today.

I was a bit stuck today as I had to see the physioterrorist in the morning (it was pouring with rain anyway) and Bee had the car for the hairdresser in the afternoon. (Rule 1: Never interfere with a lady's hair appointment). However, got the ECS leaving Laira and then the up train from our loft:

You can see from the images that photography is becoming more difficult as the foliage encroaches – even from our high level. Hopefully better when the trees shed.

Kind regards
Trevor T

The Westerns' Final Month
Neil Phillips

Roger's ongoing collection of photos from early 1977, showing Western Class 52 activity in Cornwall in the final weeks of the diesel-hydraulic era, is of great interest to me as I was not in Cornwall at that time and so unable to record it myself. Instead I was in the Swindon area photographing some of the numerous Western farewell specials which passed through. On 5th February for instance, the same day Roger recorded D1041 and D1048 shunting milk and parcels respectively at St Erth, I captured D1023 calling at Swindon on the 'Capitals Untied Express' and a sorry-looking D1015 on the Works (a pity we didn't see this now fully restored locomotive back on the Cornish Main Line this summer but there's always next year......) I have attached these and a few others taken within the 4-week run-up to the final and well-recorded 'Western Tribute' tour of 26th February 1977, featuring D1013 and D1023.

A couple of comments on Paul Barlow's South Devon Railway Heritage Open Day feature (lovely photos in excellent weather) (click here, scroll down) - some may have noticed the incongruous sight of autocoach W233W riding on B4 bogies! This was a legacy of 'Kingfisher' having spent a number of years at the Railway Technical Centre Derby as 'Test Car 1', latterly ADW150375 and repainted in WR-style chocolate and cream colours for the GWR150 celebrations in 1985, a livery these vehicles never carried in reality. Also I recall finding the Bristol Lodekka in Western National colours, 468 FTT, on display at a transport event at Avebury, Wiltshire in 1987 - it was of particular interest to me as I used to occasionally travel to and from school in Truro on 472 FTT which looked identical (with black rubber window seals, all the others in the area had cream-coloured seals). I have a 1:76 scale model of this bus here on the shelf as I type this (Exclusive First Editions ref. 14204 for anyone who's interested!)

Finally, apologies for not making it to last weekend's china clay presentation, I would have liked to attend but family matters got in the way!

'Keeping things moving'
Sandite/RHTT trains over the years
Julian Stephens
Part 1

Hello Jon

Your recent shot of BZ at sunset has prompted me to look through my archive for Autumn images.

It is probably seasonally appropriate to feature how things have progressed with regard to keeping things on the move at this time of year.

Capturing any images of these workings was challenging back then because of a lack of information, a lack of daylight and it always seemed to be raining!

I believe the Sunday diagrams took the Sandite train as far as Newton Abbot.

The North Cornwall Miniature Railway
Andrew & Diane Jones

Possibly the most intensive steam activity in 5 decades took place today on a private 10 1/4 gauge railway, near St Teath North Cornwall.

Bob Lanaway opened his extensive site in aid of the RNLI charity, one of only 4 opportunities this year.

The weather looked decidedly ominous but eventually cleared to give a wonderful afternoon of nostalgia and hospitality.

The permanent way extends for approx 3/4 of a mile and allows for some spirited running.

I have attached a number of photographs of the proceedings and come the new year will certainly return and it is definitely worth pencilling in on the calendar!

Abandoned Railways From Above - The S&DJR
Paul Negus

Hi Jon and Roger

Hot on the heels of my recent report on arson damage at Bath Green Park Station (click here/scroll down), Channel 4 have started a new series "Abandoned Railways From Above". Episode 1 covers the S&DJR main line from Bath Green Park to Bournemouth with some superb archive footage, much of which is from Ivo Peters but there is a significant amount that I hadn't seen before. You can see the fire damage from above but also appreciate the prior reglazing of the canopy.

It was broadcast on Saturday night - I had no prior knowledge, thanks to my wife for spotting it on the planner! - but is available on the Channel 4 website (click here). Thoroughly recommended!

Kind regards
Paul Negus
Many thanks Paul - well spotted. I have added the link to the series in your text above, but in case anybody would like to save it, it is: https://www.channel4.com/programmes/abandoned-railways-from-above

Didcot Railway Centre
Autumn Gala
Colin Pidgeon

I attended the Didcot Railway Centre's Take 2! Autumn Gala on Friday 20-09-2024 amid  some inclement weather.

The locos in steam were the Railway Centre's 1340 & 4144 with visiting  41241 from The Keighley & Worth  Valley Railway & 41312 from the Mid Hants Railway.

4144, 41241, & 41312 were used for hauling trains on both of the Demonstration lines while 1340 was doing various shunting demos including pulling Railcar No 22 from the Carriage Shed.

4079 Pendennis Castle, 5051 Drysllwyn Castle & 5322 were on display. Work has started on restoration of the engine shed as can be seen on the right of 5322.

Castle Cary
Gavin Johns

Great to see an authentic (!) GW running-in board being created for Castle Cary.  Made me look up a running-in board image from the early 60's - attached.  Intriguing how the emphasis then was that you changed at Castle Cary to go further west: the Weymouth line was the main route everything west needed a change.

Bath Green Park Station
Paul Negus

Hi Jon and Roger

Please find attached a couple of shots of the latest refurbishment at Green Park Station. There was a fire earlier last year - arson - started in one of the wooden market kiosks sited along the public footpath inside the train shed. This damaged a large proportion of the side roof and wall which has now been stripped back to reveal the impressive framing. You can see that a significant area has to be replaced.

This is a Grade 2 listed building and the central part of the train shed forms part of a supermarket car park, which is temporarily closed. For those of you unfamiliar with Green Park Station, the trains entered from the left of the photographs.

Kind regards
Paul
