NINETEEN SIXTY TWO
Part 42
Michael L. Roach
Near Brentor
In Parts 39 and 40 I showed photos taken on the afternoon and evening of 18 August 1962 west of Lydford Station on the GWR's Launceston Branch. On my way there I stopped south of Lydford and near Brentor village to catch the 10.25am Plymouth to Launceston on film. The first photo shows the train hauled by Laira's 4570 heading north-east to Lydford; note the enthusiast at the window of the first coach. In the second photo the engine is about to pass under Burn Lane which had given me access to the area. The last view is looking north-east from the bridge showing the proximity of the GWR's single line to Launceston and the Southern Railway's main line from Exeter to Plymouth via Okehampton. The whole area looked incredibly neat in 1962 but within 6 years both lines would be closed. and the area is now a jungle of scrub and small trees. The three bridges carrying Burn Lane over the railways are still there.
Heavy Trains (1)
I have written before of the huge loads that the Great Western expected their footplatemen to work out of Paddington at holiday periods in the early years of the last century with quite small engines. It will be recalled that the 4-6-0 express passenger classes in the shape of the 2-cylinder Saints and 4-cylinder Stars had only just started to come off the production line and most expresses were still being hauled by 4-4-0 classes. In this article I am going to recount just a couple of examples from the ones listed regularly in the GWR Magazine. The first trip comes from 24 December 1906. Early that Christmas Eve the 12.17am to Birkenhead set out from Paddington with one 6-wheel coach and 17 8-wheel coaches. The engine given to the driver for this formidable load was no. 16 which was one of William Dean's four prototypes in the Armstrong class of 4-4-0 double-frame locos built at Swindon in 1894. Number 16 was actually a rebuild of an un-named 2-4-0 broad-gauge convertible engine built in 1888. After rebuilding the engine was named “Brunel” and was a particularly handsome looking locomotive, and very similar in appearance to the Dean “singles” with an extra pair of driving wheels partly beneath the cab. William Dean was the CME (Chief Mechanical Engineer) of the GWR from 1877 to 1902 when he retired due to ill health and was succeeded by his deputy George Jackson Churchward which ensured continuity and it was the latter who moved the engines up a size by designing 4-6-0s. On this day in 1906 number 16 reached its first stop at Reading at an average speed of 44 mph. Although the first stop was at Reading the load had been reduced by two 8-wheel coaches at Twyford, presumably by the use of slip coaches because this was the heyday of slip operation on the GWR peaking at 79 in 1908. I guess that the slip coaches were destined to give a late-night service to Henley-on-Thames. In my 1902 timetable the then 12.15am “fast corridor train to Birmingham and Liverpool” slipped a coach or coaches at Twyford  at 1.02am giving an arrival at Henley at 1.20am but only on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The driver of no. 16 was one William Tallis and at Easter 1907 he was again on the 12.17 am to Birkenhead with 4-4-0 no. 7 another of Dean's prototypes on Thursday 28 March at the start of the Easter rush. Whitsuntide 1907 Tallis was again rostered on the 12.17am to Birkenhead on Saturday 18 May with prototype no. 8 and 14 8-wheelers and 3 6-wheelers averaging 44 mph to Reading. Tallis was obviously a very reliable driver, but was reliant on a competent fireman working hard for the four hours it took to reach Wolverhampton, where Tallis was based. The distance from Paddington was 141 miles 61 chains via Oxford. At the time the average distance covered by a GWR passenger train driver was around 100 miles per shift.

Westbury Station 9am - 11am  Tuesday 19th September 2023

A couple of hours on platforms 2 and 3 at a windy and occasionally wet Westbury station this morning produced plenty of action.

1) Looking across the station from the adjacent road bridge a couple of turbos on Portsmouth & Cardiff-bound services with a class 800 approaching on a Plymouth - Paddington working.

2)  A second view of the station from the road bridge at the north end.  The re-routed 2C37 0835 Bristol Temple Meads - Penzance formed: 43198 49105 48102 48114 48130 (reformed set GW05) & 43029  heading south through platform 2 at 0913hrs.   Once an everyday sight at Westbury,  HSTs are rarely seen in 2023 except for the Colas test trains.

3) 158769 (L) with the 0946 Westbury - Swindon and 158750 (R) on the 0823 Southampton Central - Bristol Temple Meads.

4) Recently returned from Wolverton works after a bodywork and interior makeover 166221 arriving with the 0823 Portsmouth Harbour - Cardiff Central.

5) Colas 67027 about to leave the up yard 'light engine' to Hinksey (Oxford).

6) 70814 70803 and 66849 moving around in the up yard.

7) 66511 shortly after arriving with the 6C84 0840 Fairwater - Westbury high output ballast carriers for reloading. Note: according to TOPS this loco was, at the time, working from Fairwater to Norton Fitzwarren with 66531 supposedly on 6C84!

8) 66113 and 66097 (left) shortly before departing for Exeter Riverside, with 66762 66197 and 66797 ahead on the 6O41 1014 Westbury - Eastleigh engineers trip working.

9) 158765 on the 0945 Bristol Temple Meads - Salisbury in P1 with 'voyagers' 220008 and 221141 passing through on the 1V44 0612 Leeds - Plymouth, this was until very recently worked by a XC HST set.

10) 66106 on yard shunting duties.

With best regards.  Guy Vincent.

Hi Viewers,

As I trawled through you tube, as I do,  I came across the attached film and thought you might be interested.

Filmed on 8mm in colour but silent, it shows various trains both steam & diesel on the main line between Newton Abbot & Penzance plus the old St Ives station but it does jump around a bit.

Houndiscombe Road Bridge
Michael L. Roach
Lots of interesting pictures of the last HST workings including a nice one of an HST passing under Houndiscombe Road, Plymouth by Jon Morley. When the line was built through here in 1848-49 it was through fields because this was the northern outskirts of the town of Plymouth. There were no stations in the vicinity. Mutley was opened in 1871 and North Road in 1877 with just a quarter mile between them. The bridge carrying Houndiscombe Road was a typical Brunelian one, of which many examples remain, spanning the two tracks. By the 1930s the bridge was causing a bottleneck in the station throat of Plymouth North Road. The existing bridge was demolished and rebuilt by the GWR as shown here in an article from the GWR Magazine for December 1938. This was the heyday of the GWR with some of the yearly bound volumes of the magazine having more than 600 pages.

Extra Cross Country HST working Sunday 17th September 2023

This morning (17th) an unscheduled VSTP path was inserted into the day's train plan. This was for a 5Z43 0923 Neville Hill (Leeds) - Laira empty stock movement consisting of:  43366  'HST 40', set XC03 (41194 45001 42038 42053 42052 42380 44072) & 43303.   However, due to late running of the 1V52 0935 York - Plymouth (220008),  5Z43 was put into passenger service from Birmingham New Street as 1Z52 1212 BHM - Plymouth.    Despite the heavy rain and very poor light I decided this working had to be recorded so here are two photos taken from the footbridge at Bradford on Avon station at 1427hrs.  Ten minutes later the rain reduced to light drizzle.   I believe that on arrival at Plymouth the HST set was due to run empty to Laira to be retired from service.

It is hard to believe it was 41 years ago this month that HSTs took over most workings on the NE-SW corridor, a subject previously covered by CRS on this site (branded as 'Heart Line').  This in turn displaced many class 45 / 46 'Peaks' from class 1 duties, with relegation to freight and parcels duties, or withdrawal.   For many years the HSTs were largely ignored and often avoided by many enthusiasts (myself included!) in preference to 'proper' trains hauled by a locomotive.  This gradually changed with the loss of traditional loco and coaches formations and the eventual near-domination of passenger services by modern multiple units.  The HSTs were arguably the finest trains ever used on British Railways and the fact they have lasted as long as they have is proof of this.   Indeed, were it not for outside interference the industry would probably have carried on using them for several more years.   Somehow I doubt the class 220 & 221 Voyagers will be as fondly remembered when their turn for withdrawal comes around.  Time, as they say, will tell.

Regards,  Guy Vincent.

1Z52 the last HST westbound
Exeter
Martin J. Duff.

A bonus feature / Easter egg today was the use of an otherwise empty HST being put in passenger service thus being the final westbound InterCity 125 (full length) working in the West Country. The HST was diagrammed to run 5Z43 Neville Hill - Laira however at Birmingham was stepped up to be 1Z52 the 12.12 to Plymouth. Unusually too the HST ran via platform 3 at Exeter due to another train being overtime in adjacent platform 4 A few photographs included. Cheers for now, Martin Duff

Cross Country HST
Farewell

Clive Smith

As the last Cross Country HST service is scheduled to depart Plymouth to Leeds at 16.27 on Monday 18th September here are some memories from the last few weeks of this iconic train in its pomp running the length of the country on frontline services. The 126 mph is a screenshot from a speed app taken between York and Darlington as I took a trip on one from Plymouth to Edinburgh a fortnight ago. Enjoy our Castle Class 255s while we still had them.

Regards, Clive Smith.

(3) High shutter speed for this at Teignmouth as I've been caught out here before with a slight blur on these more side-on shots as trains come hurtling around the corner. 43007 looks mightily impressive on the front of the 1S51 12.27 Plymouth - Glasgow Central with 43008 on the rear. I was hoping for a bit of cloud to diffuse the sun as this direction is not ideal at 13.15. Thankfully that occurred.(28/08/23). Copyright Clive Smith.

(7) 43303 & 43304 at Blatchford Viaduct near Ivybridge with the 1E63 15.27 Plymouth - Leeds . Annoyingly the viaduct has two trees above parapet level at either end. Fine for 2+4s and the NMT but getting a complete GWR 2+8 set in shot was a non-starter back in 2019. This was my first go at a XC 2+7 here and I wasn't optimistic at squeezing it all in and I didn't. (11/09/23). Copyright Clive Smith.

(8) It ain't over 'til it's over . After the obituaries were written the previous day for southbound XC HST passenger services here is 43366 heading the 1Z52 12.12 Birmingham New Street - Plymouth additional service through Teignmouth with 43303 on the rear. The set was en route from Neville Hill to Laira with an ECS following a failure two days previously but a southbound Voyager was running considerably late so the empty train was seconded to run as a passenger train . Definitely the last ever south bound Cross Country operated HST passenger service and via Bath and Westbury too (17/09/23).. Copyright Clive Smith.

Forthcoming feature?
Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway
Ed Hooper

We received this very intersting letter from Ed Hooper.
Dear CRS,

26th Sept 2023 marks the 200th anniversary of the official opening of the Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway.
My brother and I cycled the route of this fascinating horse-drawn tramway in July and I am finishing a report with photos. I would welcome the opportunity for you to publish this on your website for the interest of your readers.

Please find attached a view of "Tyrwhitt's Wharf" the surviving stables at Clearbrook, which you are welcome to publish as a taster. (copywrite Ed Hooper).

I should be able to email you the report by 23rd September for publishing on the 26th. Let me know if you have a preferred resolution for photos on your website. I have around 50 photos to tell the story which I have currently embedded in a word file at 150ppi. I'm guessing it could go as a special features article.

Let me know if of interest.

Many thanks, Ed Hooper

Work at Dawlish
Roger Salter
Part 1
On my visit to Dawlish this week I found Lea Mount’s footpaths closed off to enable major re-stabilising work to the cliff face. Most trees/vegetation have been cleared.  The work on the new Dawlish footbridge with its lifts is progressing but not complete yet. There are very positive signs that work is coming to an end as the very large BAM site near Dawlish Warren is fully cleared except for some rail track equipment. One will need a small step ladder to take any worthwhile photos at Dawlish as the small metal rail on top of masonry wall is just our height!  However it appears that when complete the new footbridge track may have glass panels.

Mark in Devon
Mark Lynam

Today I took a trip to Devon to see the XC HST and the 67s on UK Railtours "The Skipping Devonian" to Paignton on a dull and wet Saturday!

1. 43321 at Newton Abbot in the rain working 1V44 0609 Leeds to Plymouth.

I had hoped to see the 67s here as well, I expected them to stop here as RTT said. Instead it went through at line speed so my camera was on the wrong settings and sadly missed it.

2. I went on to Paignton for it instead, knowing that the Purple one would now be on the North end. 67007 is seen in Goodrington Yard.

3. I then went up to Exeter St Davids and back to Paignton to pass a couple of hours as the 67s were due to wait at Goodrington for a few hours and it was a dull day, luckily I had a Devon Ranger. SWR 159015 and GWR 158798 seen side by side.

4. Back in Paignton to see 67007 pull into the station.

5. 67007 pulls away from Paignton working 1Z67 1730 Paignton to Peterborough.

6. 67005 "Queen's Messenger" on the rear

Sad pair at
Bristol Parkway
Craig Munday

Our holiday ending at Bristol Airport on 15th Sept coincided nicely with the dog collection and a quick dash to Bristol Parkway to see the rather sad sojourn of XC power cars 43366 and 43184 working from Laira to Neville Hill, Leeds.

Ironically on double yellow signals following 1S41, a four car Voyager!

Best wishesn,  Craig Munday.

MONDAY 11th SEPTEMBER  43042 49103 48107 48108 48109 43162 (set GW02) moved as 5Z25 0958 Laira - Minehead.

TUESDAY 12th SEPTEMBER 43122 48106 48105 48104 49102 43094 (set GW02) moved as 5Z12 0958 Laira - Bishops Lydeard.  All branding and PC nameplates remain intact.   Today the Taunton Trains website
https://www.tauntontrains.co.uk/news  has an interesting item covering the period 2004-2005 when ex Virgin HST stock was kept on the WSR prior to being taken on by FGW.

There are reportedly plans to use one of the sets on the West Somerset Railway on 23rd - 24th September when the line's 'Yellow' timetable will be in operation.     Check WSR website for more details.

TUESDAY 12th SEPTEMBER.   43040 48142 48141 48140 49114 43172 (set GW14) moved as 5M98 1318 Laira - Bristol St Philips Marsh.  All vehicles debranded and PC's denamed.   43040 has also lost its Falklands 40th anniversary decals.

Further afield, also on 12th,  Rail Adventure were contracted to move 11 former Castle Class carriages from Ely Papworth Sidings to Great Yarmouth CHS, in preparation for export to Mexico.  Power cars 43468 and 43480 (not for export!) took the following vehicles: 48133 48132 48131 49111 48113 49101 48103 48101 48115 48125 49107 as 5Z44 1138 Ely Papworth - Great Yarmouth.

I understand that Cross Country power cars 43285 and 43301 are now both stood down at Laira and have been de-branded.

Best regards

Update to Links
The Curnow Collection
The Eric Curnow Collection

An update implemented 12th September 2023 I would like to request you to update the link to my website on yours to https://curnowcollection.com

The Curnow Collection consists of 1500+ images, mainly from Penzance to Paddington, but with some deviation to other locations of significance to me, including different poor quality images which appealed to me and were in danger of loss without repair in PhotoShop. The emphasis is on Penzance for the period 1969 - 1977 when I spent a lot of time on the line side, and earlier imagery that helped me understand what had gone before, and had shaped what I was familiar with.

Thank you for your assistance,
Eric Curnow

A change of Motive Power from Penzance to Plymouth this morning
Roger Winnen
Most probadly in connection with the line closures in Cornwall yesterday two London bound services were replaced by Castle Class sets to Plymouth where passengers transferred into IETs to complete their journey. Both HST Castle Class sets then moving off to Laira Depot. One wonders if these sets are due for withdrawal as only three sets are working today for the rest of the day.
The 08.15 Penzance to Plymouth worked by GW12 43016 Powderham Castle and  43189 Launceston Castle
The 09.10 Penzance to Plymouth worked by GW02 43094 Dunster Castle and 43122 St Mawes Castle.

4555 Livery
Trevor Tremethick

I have been reading Mike Roach’s interesting piece about 4555 and also Roy Hart’s livery comments. Roy’s description of “an absurd parody of Great Western livery” I would say is pretty much on the money. I attach a detail from a picture I took back in July when 4555 was bunker-first up Goodrington Bank and you can see how the lining wraps around the bunker  - half way up! – and actually seems to cut through where the yellow power classification disc should be (only there isn’t one). The bunker overhang is individually lined. I recall they put a copper cap on 4588 when they had it. What is it with this railway?

4555 went to St. Blazey for a very short time (less than two months) before moving to Laira. I was very lucky, at age ten, to have had a run down the Falmouth branch with 4555 which must have been covering for a DMU. My parents and I got off at Penmere and they took me to look at the engine during the brief stop. The number was unmistakeable, and it is a memory that has stayed with me.

Best wishes. Trevor Tremethick.

Michael's article has certainly stirred up many memories and comments, very favourable of his article but not so of the current livery,  Many thanks Trevor for your excellent photograph and comments. 4555 seems to have been almost everywhere - thank heavens it is still going and in fine fettle.

Another
Mystery Photograph
Andrew Jenkins

Picture
Unknown station. Picture owner and copyright Andrew Jenkins.
As you helped with the above image could I be cheeky and ask you another which has also stumped the Photo group and Railway history Groups.
This one shows a World War 1 soldier bidding farewell to his sweetheart on from an LSWR station. It was photographed by an anonymous local photographer and posted from Morwenstow near Bude in 1916. A match to local stations in the Bude area has not been found.
I have had this in my collection for many years and would love to know which station this is.
Please feel free to publish on your web page but please acknowledge me as owner of the original photo.

With many thanks for your continued help
Andrew Jenkins

Many thanks Andrew - please continue to be cheeky - we are very pleased to be able to help with your  'Saying goodbye at a station'. This one brings back memories to me when I bid goodbye to Valerie at Redruth station I was going into the unknown posted on active service in the RAF for the Borneo Confrontation in 1964. Luckily for me being away for a years solitary was the only unpleasant part.

Many thanks Mick - it seems a great pity that some use cannot be found for this elegant listed building - it stands there in isolation neglected although slightly spoilt by some idiot with a spray can.
Simon Hickman writes - Hi there,
You ask on the latest input section of the CRS website for more details of the Exeter St David’s transfer shed. There’s a good summary on Historic England’s list description, here: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1268441?section=official-list-entry

Historic England are encouraging people to upload photos and information to records of listed structures via the missing pieces project, so perhaps you could encourage your members to participate? It’d be great to see some more pictures of the South West’s listed railway structures on there.

Kind regards, Simon Hickman.

Advance notice of a superb evening.
Plym Valley Railway
Two routes to Tavistock
Presented by Bernard Mills
Picture
I was wondering whether you would be able to put the attached poster advertising Bernard Mills’ slide show on your website, as there may be a few of your members who live in East Cornwall and remember the two lines to Tavistock who might be interested in attending. As you will read all proceeds are for a good cause.

If you have difficulty opening the attachment then please do get in touch with me.

Many thanks. Kind regards, Keith Vyvyan,  Hon. Chairman & Curator,
Plym Valley Railway Association.
Further information on this excellent show.
I’d be grateful if you would be willing to put up the attached poster to advertise the event in the library and to the Friends of the Railway Studies Collection. Bernard Mills, the well known Westcountry railway photographer and author, who is a past Chairman of the Plym Valley Railway Association, will be showing a selection of slides, from his very extensive collection, of the two routes to Tavistock. This will include our line, the former Plymouth to Launceston Branch. The majority will be from the days of steam and also some of the early diesels. All proceeds from the evening will go towards the ‘SOS’ Appeal for the railway to purchase its resident working locomotive Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 ‘Albert’ whose private owners will be putting it up for sale in January 2024, but have kindly given us first refusal.

We have included the locations used by sat navs and ‘What3Words’ to the Scout Hall which is located behind Plympton Police Station. Tickets priced £5 and include tea/coffee and cake, can either be purchased in advance via our website ‘Plymrail’ or on the door. All are welcome.

Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,
Keith Vyvyan, Hon. Chairman & Curator,
Plym Valley Railway Association
Thank you for this invite Keith -
this will be a good evening.
