NINETEEN SIXTY TWO
- PART 44

Exeter St. Davids
Exeter St. Davids is the main railway station serving the city of Exeter – population 133,000 – now 173 miles from Paddington via Westbury. However when the station opened in 1844 it was the western terminus of the Bristol & Exeter Railway and all trains to and from London ran via Bristol giving a distance of 194 miles to the capital. The station remained a terminus until the line was extended to Teignmouth in 1846 by the South Devon Railway. The B&ER, the SDR and the Cornwall Railway amalgamated with Great Western Railway in 1876; and the GWR carried out many improvements to St. Davids over the years between 1876 and 1947. The railways of Britain were nationalised on 1 January 1948. Latest figures for usage of the station are 2,200,000 plus 900,000 changing trains. As built the station was one of Brunel's infamous single-sided stations with one long platform to serve trains in both directions. This article is a follow-up to Part 43 to show more photos taken on the same day when I had made a half day trip to Exeter from Plymouth i.e 28 July 1962.
4-4-0 No. 16 “Brunel”
In Part 42 I outlined how a driver from Wolverhampton was expected to take 18 coaches out of Paddington on a night train to Birmingham and Liverpool on Christmas Eve 1906. The engine he was given for this mammoth load was no. 16 “Brunel” a 4-4-0 with half the tractive effort of the later Castle-class. In its 110-year history the GWR named three of its engines after its first engineer. The first two were just called Brunel while the third was named out in full Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The first was a broad gauge 2-4-0 which lasted from 1863 to 1879. The third was Castle-class 5069 which lasted from 1938 to 1962. This article is mainly about the second of the three engines, although it was not named at first. Number 16 was a 2-4-0 built in 1888 as a broad-guage “convertible” engine. When the broad-gauge was dispensed with in 1892 the engine was laid aside in one of the many sidings at Swindon holding redundant broad-gauge stock. In 1894 the engine was rebuilt to the narrow-gauge as a rather handsome 4-4-0 and only then given the name Brunel. It retained its 7 feet driving wheels; the cylinders were kept as 2 by 20 inches diameter, but the piston stroke was increased from 24 to 26 inches. Curiously (in my view) the boiler pressure was reduced from 180 to 160 psi resulting in a tractive effort slightly less than in its broad-gauge guise at 16,540. For comparison the tractive effort of 5069 was 31,625. Twenty eight years later in the GWR Magazine for January 1934 the Company wrote this: Summer service and holiday trains in 1933 were particularly heavy, especially at weekends, and loads of fifteen to seventeen coaches were frequentluy conveyed on the West of England trains by engines of the “King” and “Castle” classes. Comparing routes the 1933 trains would have had the long 17-mile climb from Newbury to Savernake Summit but might have shed some coaches before the later climb to Whiteball. Meanwhile the 1906 train to Liverpool would have had to contend with the shorter but steeper climb of Hatton Bank. I think no. 16 had a far harder task but may have been given assistance to surmount Hatton Bank.
In the attached table readers can see an interesting comparison of all three engines named after Brunel and also in the table are the three engines named Gooch i.e after Sir Daniel Gooch the first locomotive engineer of the GWR.

Bodmin Road
Howard Sprenger

It is now some months ago since Howard Sprenger approached us offering some early views of Falmouth station from his unique personal collection. Viewers will see examples of his work on the branch and elsewhere. "Here" says Howard,  "Are some more of the Cornish  Main line". Today we feature Bodmin Road, later Parkway in 1975/76.
Picture
Bodmin Road August 1975 (1) Copyright Howard Sprenger. Here we see the up platform at Bodmin Road with the metals serving the branch having been removed - at that time there was no vision of a resumption of passenger services. In the yard a rake of clay hoods stands.
Picture
Bodmin Road August 1975 (2) Copyright Howard Sprenger. An up milk rushes through head by a class 47. You will note the metals to Bodmin General are still connected to the up main - what a shame this connection which would have served well through services to the now flourishing Bodmin Railway was removed. The Bodmin Railway now only has a main line connection via the goods yard.

Many thanks indeed Howard for the above reminders of what Bodmin Road (Parkway) looked like in the early seventies.

X Country at
Swanage
Andrew Hickson

Hello Keith
The Cross Country HST Farewell Tour that ran on Tuesday from Leeds to Swanage was a public one and was fully booked very soon after tickets became available. I managed to join the "fill in" trip from Swanage to Bournemouth and back. A photo stop was made at Wareham. Coasters, programmes, pin badges and tickets were handed out as souvenirs.
Here is a selection of my photos. Also spotted at Swanage was a very pretty freshly painted Adams 563  T3 Class.

Looking at the above pictures - the Swanage branch was closed - the track lifted - who in their wildest dreams would have thought an HST to Swanage was possible but here we are - marvellous - shows what sheer dedication can do. Congratulations all round.

X Country Staff final to Swanage at

Cross Country HST ECS  Leeds to Plymouth Wednesday 26th September

Following the end of regular booked HST use by Cross Country, as covered recently on the CRS site, on Tuesday 26th a charity special was run ('The Pines Express') from Leeds to Swanage and back, with a fill-in return trip from Swanage to Bournemouth added for good measure.  The main tour was fully booked, the outward leg ran from Reading via Basingstoke and Winchester to Southampton with the return after Southampton via Chandlers Ford, the Laverstock loop and Andover.
A spin-off from this was the return of the empty HST set from Leeds Neville Hill depot to Laira this morning (27th).  5Z43 0606 Neville Hill - Laira made good time and was some 20 minutes early at Bristol Temple Meads where it paused for just 3 minutes (1043-46) before setting off westwards, possibly for the last time?  I barely had time to walk from the end of P9 to the far end of P10 before the signal cleared and 5Z43 was on its way.  A planned staff special from Plymouth to Blackpool that was due to run on Friday 29th has reportedly been cancelled.

A 'close call' for
David Tozer at Exminster
Having not yet had the chance to photograph the Cross Country HST with the two power cars in previous liveries. I left my morning appointment early and reached the overbridge at Exminster in plenty of time. Then 166206 appeared working the 1120 Paignton to Exmouth. Luckily it got out of the way in the nick of time. 43008 top and tails with 43007 working the 0606 5Z43 Neville Hill to Laira. The set was still carrying the headboard which read 'Cross Country High Speed Train Farewell'.

Oh dear, a clash.
9th December

Unfortunately this event clashes with another, 'must go to event' here at Reduth when Amyas Crump presents 'The Southern in East  Devon'. So if you live in Newton Abbot or beyond you know where to go but if you live in Cornwall come to REDRUTH - please.
Hello,
I am writing from the Railway Studies Collection to share our upcoming event.
The Railway Studies Collection, part of Newton Abbot Library, is believed to be the second largest collection of railway materials in the country, after York's National Railway Museum.  All aspects of Britain's Railways are covered by the Collection, with material of interest to railway and social historians, writer's, modellers, researchers and those with a more general interest.  As well as a vast array of railway books, the Collection holds thousands of photographs, and many original blueprint documents, track plans, maps, and timetables.
On Saturday 9th December, Newton Abbot Library will be holding its second ever Railway Studies and Modellers Show.  Our first show back in 2021 saw over 700 people gather together to celebrate their hobby and passion for railways, raising hundreds of pounds for our charity, Libraries Unlimited.
We will have layouts in a variety of gauges, as well as trading stands, a photograph exhibition, rare and old books from the archives of the Railway Studies Collection, activities for families, and more.
We will also be holding two talks:
'Not Just Trains', 11am, presented by Graham Walker, Secretary of the Friends of the Railway Studies Collection
'From Railways to Royalty', 2pm, presented by Jack Boskett, Professional Railway Photographer

Please see the attached posters for full details.  We would really appreciate it if you are able to share the Railway Studies and Modellers Show 2023 to your community. We also hope you'll come along yourselves for a great day out in Newton Abbot.

Many thanks, Emma,

NINTEEN SIXTY TWO  62  - PART 43

Michael L. Roach
The Southern Railway's Z-Class
On Saturday 28 July 1962 I took a half-day trip from Plymouth to Exeter, outwards at 2.45pm. This was The Royal Duchy, the 11.50am off Penzance which was allowed nearly eight hours to reach Paddington at 7.42pm. The load was 14C hauled by a D8xx series Warship piloted by a North British Type 2 in the D63xx series; and the duo took 14 minutes to pass Hemerdon Box. The fare was ten shillings (50p) return. There was one scheduled stop at Totnes and no less than three signal slows and three signal stops. The pilot came off at Newton Abbot on the through road. Just in front of my train must have been the late running 12.30 Newquay to Paddington which was nominally non-stop from Plymouth to Paddington. My train started 4L and lost a further 13 minutes to Exeter St. Davids where I stayed from 4.30pm to 7.47pm photographing steam. No film was expended on photographing diesels, as film was too precious, although I did photograph diesels later in the 1960s. Ten steam engines were photographed, as follows: 1009, 1471, 3810, 9635, 30957, 31853, 34011, 34023, 34081, and 34096 representing seven different classes. The highlights were seeing GW 2-8-0 3810 on a parcels train; an SR 0-8-0 30957 on banking duties; and seeing the Okehampton to Surbiton car-carrier banked up the 1 in 37 to Exeter Central.
Several British railways built 0-8-0 tender engines for haulage of heavy freight trains, but 0-8-0 tank engines were very rare. The Southern Railway's Z-class was a 3-cylinder 0-8-0 tank engine designed by Richard Maunsell for heavy shunting. The initial batch of eight were built at Brighton Works in 1929 and at first they were spread all over the Southern system. A second order for ten engines to be built at Eastleigh in 1931 was cancelled due to the depression in trade of the early 1930s. With a tractive effort of 29,380 and all the 71 ton weight on the driving wheels the Z-class were the complete master of what they were asked to do. British Railways rated the class 7F and numbered them 30950 to 30957.
Although the class had been based at Exeter before, the first half of the 1950s saw none at Exmouth Junction Shed. Two of the class arrived in 1956; one in 1958; and no less than five in 1959, meaning that the whole class had gravitated to Exmouth Junction Shed, although I cannot imagine that Exeter ever needed all eight engines. This state of affairs would last from May 1959 to October 1962 when the first of the class was condemned and by the end of that year the whole class had been withdrawn. An attempt to preserve 30952 for use on the Bluebell Railway ended in failure and all eight examples were cut up. In two adjacent images are shewn examples of two differentn 8-coupled engines. The one thing they have in common is the driving wheel diameter which is very similar. A comparison of all the other main dimensions shows them to be completetely different; Maunsell was quite definitely not copying Churchward's 2800-class 2-8-0s intoduced 25 years earlier or the 4200-class of 1910. This was the only occasion I managed to capture a Z-class on film.
I left Exeter at 7.47pm (5L) on a Manchester to Plymouth train as far as Newton Abbot where I transferred to the following 4.30pm Paddington to Truro train (The Mayflower) perhaps in the vain hope that the train might be steam-hauled. Both were hauled by unrecorded D800-series Warships.

Another departure
David Tozer

Yet another pair of HST Power cars and coaches leave the West Country.

37608 with 43192 48143 48144 48145 49115 49110 48128 43010 are working 5L46 09:57 Laira - Ely Papworth Sidings taken at Silverton in murky conditions.

Will these be heading to Mexico I wonder.

I find it odd that these are not 'green' enough for our Department of Transport, yet in Mexico they have a further use whilst some of our trains are now overcrowded.

The Pilning story continued
Richard Giles

Hello Keith

Sorry for the late reply on this subject (due to recent holidays) - reference Phil Smith's 3rd , published 9th September view.

Pilning Station, South Gloucestershire has always been an interesting subject, cited on the South Wales mainline between Patchway (the Severn Tunnel) and Severn Tunnel Junction Stations being in latter times poorly served, currently having only two trains calling a week both on a Saturday despite several recent changes in the surrounding landscape regarding a large TESCO distribution depot and the WAVE an inland water surfing park (probably not as good as Newquay and the North Cornwall Coast!) but popularity here is growing non the less, nearby.

The placard Platform 2 opened 1st December 1886, relates to its unpopular closure during the Autumn of 2016 as electrification was nearing.  Image 1 (copyright Richard Giles) taken on 10th September 2016 shows 153361 + 150127 with 2U12 1407 Taunton - Cardiff Central service 'the last train' (so called by many at the time!) as an engineering work line blockade was to start the next day, 11th September through to 21st October for internal tunnel electrification 'contact rail' installation to take place.  The footbridge (which was already observed to have had some flame cutting taken place on this date) was to be removed to accommodate the passage of overhead line wires and supports and as can be seen a number of locals, a village councilor, members of the excellent Friends of the Surburban Railway (FOBSR) area pro-rail lobby group (now known as Bristol Rail Campaign Friends of Surburban Bristol Railways)  and rail enthusiasts were present, the latter in fact causing problems as the train guard who was in the second coach of 150127 (57127) had to cancel at least two departure attempts (this eventually taking place at 1542) as persons kept jumping out of its front coach (52127) presumably wanting to be the final passenger to get off and last back on a train to call at this station platform prior to closure! Bunting, flags and other home-made placards which had been put up by station supporters to mark the occasion, completed the scene.

HOWEVER, this was not to be and two more trains (the first being on Saturday 22nd October) later, Image 2 (copyright Richard Giles) 150938 (formed 57219+52238+57238)  which is seen with 2U20 1407 Taunton - Cardiff Central (which was started at Bristol Temple Meads on the day at 1521 -  the original set having failed with a door defect) departing at 1545 (5 minutes late) in not so good weather conditions and a lower turn out re observers, this being  the 'real' final train to call on 29th October 2016. Two further week-end blockades following the six-week work period had been 'overlooked' and these were the ones planned for the eventual demise of the foot-bridge this having been completed by mid-November.

Hope of interest, regards,
RICHARD GILES Clevedon. North Somerset.

The Ken and Colin show
Ken Mumford & Colin Pidgeon

Today Colin and I have agreed to join forces with SOME of the photos I took [at KEMBLE] and SOME that Colin took at SWINDON.  Hopefully I've sorted them out helpfully below:-

[1]  0Z56 - Barnetby Sidings to Swindon Transfer taken by COLIN at SWINDON . This train was due to pass KEMBLE at 1354  -  its actual time of passing was 1151, so KEN missed it because it passed this station 122 minutes EARLY!  Colin's photo shows 56113 and 56051 alongside platform at SWINDON some 118 minutes EARLY!

[2]  A Paddington bound IET slows down for the KEMBLE stop taken by KEN

[3]  This is probably a mileage marker at KEMBLE [platform 1 - the London bound platform]

[4]  Running 11 minutes LATE passing KEMBLE and taking KEN by surprise was 1Q15 Derby to Swansea {Landore] via 'the world'.

[5]  1Q15 passes through SWINDON and makes its way to Cockleberry Sidings just east of the station [photo by COLIN] where it reverses.  The power cars are 43277 and 43274.

[6]  Having reversed,1Q15 returns through SWINDON 1 minute EARLY [again  photo by COLIN] and takes the Gloucester branch via KEMBLE.

[7]   Whilst KEN was waiting at KEMBLE for 1Q15 to return, this photo was taken from the station's footbridge of a 'Lock-jaw' Cheltenham bound IET slowing down for the KEMBLE stop.

[8] 1Q15 passes the old water tower on platfrom 2 at KEMBLE - photo by KEN. Now 4 minutes EARLY!

[9] 1Q15 going away shot by KEN at KEMBLE but unable to get the rear power car!

[10] Meanwhile back at SWINDON, COLIN took this photo [at the eastern end of platform 4] of the pioneer class 66 [66001] with 6C03 - Northolt to Severnside .

[11] 70802 on the Up Main Line [UML] photographed by COLIN with 6M40 - Westbury to Stud Farm.

[12] Units 756106 and 756108 undergoing mileage accumulation trials between South Wales and Swindon - photographed by COLIN at SWINDON.

[13] 60015 does some shunting in preparation for taking 6V53 [Swindon Stores to Toton Sidings] later that day.

Kind regards,

Ken and Colin.

The Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway -
200 year anniversary

 (26th September 1823 – 26th September 2023)
Edward Hooper celebrates the 200th anniversary of this very early railway route.
An exploration of the route by from Sutton Harbour to Princetown, July 2023.
Picture
Dartmoor ponies pay reverence to their forebears at Tyrwhitt’s Wharf, which was the stables located roughly halfway along the line. On the opening day, 26th September 1823, a public breakfast was laid on by Sir Thomas Tyrwhitt for about a thousand people. According to the press, “three marquees were erected and every elegant species of viand provided for the reception and gratification of the company.” Unfortunately about midday the rain came in and dispersed most of the crowd. Copyright Ed Hooper

Introduction
My brother, Tim, and I decided to spend a weekend tracing the route of this lesser known but historically significant tramway from the hustle bustle of Sutton Harbour in Plymouth to the moorland outpost of Princetown.
Anyone who witnessed this interesting railway in operation has long since departed. By 1878 the upper sections of the trackbed had been commandeered by the GWR for the Princetown Branch. In 1916 most of the remainder of the route had been taken up. Few photographs survive of the track, devoid of traffic. The railway carried no locomotives throughout its life and passengers were only carried unofficially.
A good number of photographs featuring horses towing china clay wagons are from the later Lee Moor Tramway and give some idea of what the set up on the P&D may have looked like.
Having traced a fair portion of the route, one can only marvel at the horses and the people who worked this line, especially on the open moorland sections in the typical weather conditions which prevail on Dartmoor.
I have endeavoured to be as accurate as possible with dates and locations, but if I have made any inadvertent errors then please accept my apologies and I have no doubt that some of your more astute readers will set me straight.

This is the first of a series of articles by Ed Hooper which will accumulate in our Features Section as item 2326. To see the first of these sections please click here

Hi Keith,
I note from comments on the CRS website that there is a mis-understanding that all of the mechanical signalling/signals in Cornwall are going to 'disappear' this November. That is not the case as Liskeard, St.Erth, St.Blazey and Goonbarrow Junction will remain as mechanical boxes.  Hope that clarifies things a bit.

Take Care,

It has been a busy weekend on the West Somerset Railway with the operation of the stored Great Western HST sets being the principle attraction. (But it is nice to have a little steam as well). Paul Barlow was the first to submit pictures.

A collection of shots from today the 23rd September 2023 from the West Somerset Railway.

One of the stored GWR castle sets was operating crewed by GWR staff whch were also WSR volunteers. The castle set created a great deal of interest with many travelling. I was informed by a member of staff the two set are stored awaiting decision on their future.

Hope this is of interest.  Kind regards Paul

NDR Update
Shillingstone
On Saturday 7th Oct and Wednesday 11th October we will be holding volunteer recruitment days as we seek to increase the number of volunteers at and on the railway, spread the activity around and begin the ramp up towards running passenger trains.  We are looking for a wide variety of different roles,  many of which are at Shillingstone but a number such as social media, digital design, website updates and the editing and drafting of articles for platform can be done remotely.  At the station we now have more wagons and need more people in our waggoners teams to maintain them as well as work on the rebuilding of our brake van and the 6 wheeled coaches on loan from the S&DRT which we plan to use for passenger services.  Our Café, Shop, Gardens, Events Site maintenance and Pway teams are looking for new volunteers and even a few hours a month would be very useful.  If you can help us with these roles then please respond to the email or come along on one of the recruitment days to meet the volunteers onsite and talk about the roles as well as the activity going on as we continue to focus on the station and the northern extension to cattle creep crossing.

The planning team have now submitted to Dorset Council the plans for our Riverside car park. We have lost much of the space at the front of the industrial units we have been using for the last few years and the 50 spaces in the plan will enable us to cater for both visitors and volunteers.  It would be useful if you could all support this application by commenting favourably on the Dorset Council Planning site.  The planning application is P/FUL/2023/04880 and can be found at Dorsetcouncil.gov.uk under planning and hopefully the link below will take you straight to the application.

We have just celebrated the 160th Anniversary of the Station opening in 1863, Many thanks if you were able to join us.  James (Rail Flicks) one of our volunteers has put together a number of video’s over the years with this one on You Tube showing our 160th celebration.

Colas and Clay Trains
Craig Munday

Hi Keith

I guess we're all having to adjust to the County without the signature CDAs. The character these four wheel wagons brought can now only be appreciated. The bogie wagons passing by seem mundane in contrast.

I've been on all shifts this week, including Par box and night MOM. This allowed me to enjoy the clay trains passing Par on 20th. The Goonbarrow to Carne Point saw the first consist including a JGA wagon. Things did not go to plan unfortunately as these wagons were designed to be loaded by overhead conveyor, rather than side-loading by scoop. It looks like DBC will have to take a look at these wagons long term suitability on the clay circuit.

6G09 is seen passing Par loaded, and returning in the afternoon.

Overnight saw a collection of no less than four red liveried class 66s in a line at St Blazey depot. Reliving old days of a packed diesel depot, 66101 / 66097 / 66113 and 66190 sparkled in the shed lights. 66190 still looking rather pristine with its white wheel rims and "silver" buffers.

Fri saw the monthly NMT run with better weather than of late and, at last, two smart looking power cars. 43277 and 43274 were on the train, and I couldn't quite sandwich in the orange rear power car in my shot at Merthen Farm near Par.

Best wishes,  Craig.

Journey to
Cornwall 1
(To Liskeard)
Guy Vincent
Wednesday 20th September 2023.    We decided at short notice to travel from Bristol to Devon by way of a diverted Castle class HST set via Westbury. Our outward train was the 2C37 0835 Bristol Temple Meads - Penzance.  The weather was poor for most of the day but in the event, due to late substitution of a class 800 with another Castle set on 2M20 1050 Penzance - Weston super Mare, we stayed on board  2C37 as far as Liskeard and returned on the second HST which was enjoyed as far as Bridgwater. The final leg was a class 800 from Taunton back to Westbury.  This was our first venture across the Tamar into the Royal Duchy since the Penzance Flyer railtour with two class 33s on 22nd June 1996!

1) 43155 at the west end of Temple Meads station but today bringing up the rear of the 2C37 0835 BTM-Penzance, diverted via Westbury and Somerton due to engineering works between Bedminster and Worle. Next stop Taunton.

2) Plymouth station. 43153 heading 2C37 0835 Bristol Temple Meads - Penzance.

3) Liskeard. 43153 about to make a right time departure with the 2C37 1212 Penzance stopping service.

4) Liskeard station, signals and signal box looking towards Menheniot.

5) Liskeard Signal Box.  In excellent order but lacking any form of external identification.

The journey from Liskeard to Bridgwater with the Castle class HST working 2M20 1050 Penzance - Weston super Mare on 20th September.

6) 43154 arriving at Liskeard on 2M20 1050 Penzance - Weston super Mare (terminating due to engineering works between Worle Jcn and Bedminster) 20.09.2023

7) 43092 at the rear of 2M20, during station dwell time at Exeter St Davids.

8) 43154 departing from Bridgwater for Weston super Mare.

9) A final view of the departing train as it clears Bridgwater.

Journey to
Cornwall 2
(To St Austell)
Paul Negus
Hi Keith

I had the rare privilege of a day trip from Axminster to St Austell yesterday (22nd September 2023) . My excitement mounted when RTT showed that the Exeter train (10.25 EXD to PNZ) should be a Castle set! Indeed it was and I had the best seat in the house - forward facing at one of the tables giving a panoramic view, just as they were designed all those decades ago.

The photographs show:

1. Running in board at Axminster, advertising the Jurassic Coast close by at Seaton.

2. One of the colourful tubs on Axminster Station.

3. 159019 arrives at Axminster from Waterloo forming the 0903 Axminster to Exeter St David's. This six coach train was nicely full of students by the time we got to Exeter Central where they all decamped to  nearby Exeter College.

4. 159019 upon arrival at Exeter St Davids.

5. 150239 arrives from Okehampton. Note the piles of new wooden chaired bullhead rail sleepers for the platform road nearest the camera.

6. 150139 departs to Exeter Central where it will form the next service to Okehampton.

7 and 8. A Castle set arrives ECS at the far platform. 43153 Clun Castle at the front and 43155 Rougement Castle at the Rear.

9. "Snake" set 107 arrives for Penzance. Note the gentleman who stands at the centre of the level crossing to ensure no pedestrians try to cross with trains coming!

10. View of Saltash Station and the famous public house from my seat.

11 to 13. Upon arrival at St Austell - 43188 Newport Castle, "The Welshman," commemorating Geraint Thomas's win in the Tour De France in 2018, with 43186 Taunton Castle on the rear.

One final nugget from the journey. The Train Manager announced when nearing Plymouth "This train continues to Penzance and …(pause)...  lots more stations!" Was her Cornish pronunciation not up to scratch perhaps?

Best wishes
Paul Negus

PS I didn't take the train home as I travelled to collect my classic car from a Grampound specialist after repair.

Westbury
Guy Vincent

The monthly visit of the Network Rail measurement HST to Westbury today, with colourful power cars 43274 and 43277 in charge.  The full formation was: 43277 975984 977994 977993 975814 977984 43274.
To the right of the HST can be seen 66782 which was waiting to leave with a long ballast train (6F05 1530 to Bristol West Jcn, tailed by 66762), and 67027 stabled.

After seeing these at Westbury I went across to Bradford on Avon (best avoided for some weeks to come due to incredibly bad congestion due to long-term roadworks) and captured 66782 en-route to Bristol.  The train passed through the area shortly after a torrential downpour that included the full works: thunder, lightning and hailstones!
Less than 4 miles away it was dry and remained so all the way home.

An appeal for
4566
David Cook (Cookey)

Picture
Picture
Hello Keith,

I hope that you are keeping well and enjoying life down in deepest Cornwall!

I wonder if I can prevail with members of the Cornwall Railway Society to help The 4566 Preservation Group in its aim to raise a significant six-figure sum which we intend putting towards the next overhaul of the engine. Can I state here and now that we are NOT paying for the overhaul but in the difficult times in which we live nowadays we have realised that if we want to see 4566 running again on the Severn valley Railway and visiting other Heritage railways we are going to have to help financially.

At present the engine is under cover and displayed inside the Engine House at Highley. Currently, the SVR is struggling financially and with costs continuing to rise there is going to be a need for more smaller engines to be available to operate services. Whilst 4566 is “out of ticket” one thing we feel is in her favour is that a lot of the engine is relatively new having been replaced during previous overhauls. The only unknown is the frames which next year will be 100 years old (4561 on the West Somerset Railway has had the frames replaced!).

Late last year the “older” trustees (me included) were approached by several younger SVR members who expressed their interest in getting involved with moving things forward. Since our initial meeting we have in no particular order, developed a website (www.4566.org.uk), completely re-drafted The Constitution, appointed 5 “younger” trustees, applied to become a charity (now confirmed, Charity No.1203207), registered for Gift Aid and Just Giving. We have also, after 4 attempts opened an on-line bank account after becoming a charity and the bank accepting we were not money-laundering!

If any CRS members feel that they would like to support us they can do so through various means including:

  1. One-off donations

  1. Regular Giving: monthly donations

  1. Gifts in Wills: Leaving a legacy. (a delicate subject I accept)

  1. Become a member of THE 4566 Preservation Group

I have attached scans of our “hot off the press” trifold brochure which we had printed for the SVR’s Autumn Steam gala last weekend. We attended the event with our sales stand and I am pleased to say that we had a very successful 4 days with our final takings far in excess of what we had anticipated (it proves that 4566 is a popular engine with a lot of people.

2024 will be the centenary of 4566 entering traffic at newton abbot in November 1924 and the trustees have plans to mark the occasion in several ways during the year. Watch out for more details in the new year but bearing in mind that 4566 was based in Cornwall from November 1946 to September 1961 there might be something of a Cornish theme to the celebrations!

Can anybody help please - all donations very much appreciated.
