Changing trains at Lydney. Yes, many thanks indeed for bring us pictures of a rare area to us. Last Thursday at Lostwithiel Clive Smith Many thanks as usual Clive for your pictures and the wealth of detail. St Germans '87 Neil Phillips Further to my visit to Liskeard on 16th September 1987, I (we!) moved on to St Germans to take a few more photos, where a couple of HSTs turned up – one form of motive power not seen during a longer visit to the first location. HST coaching stock liveries were still in transition from classic blue/grey to striped Inter City at that time (the first IC-liveried set had appeared in 1983 but it took a while for the repainting programme to get into its stride). Best regards, Neil Phillips Your young sons were I hope suitably impressed with the new venue. Many thanks Neil for your now historic pictures
P-way trains around Ivybridge Clive Smith Quality clear morning sunlight and a good reason to get out of bed early on a Sunday morning and capture the infrastructure train action. Nice to see some 70s in daylight. My first sightings since the end of the Moorswater cements in late 2019. Although the 70s have been in Devon and Cornwall since then their visits have tended to be nocturnal, scurrying back east before dawn usually. Regards, Clive Smith. Many thanks Clive, quality morning and quality pictures. Date Nails Don Asher Letter sent to John Ball and copied on to us. Hello John, The Friends of the Railway Studies Collection at Newton Abbot Library have received an enquiry regarding the Sleeper Nails. Message reads:- “Can you please find out what these were for? Found in a timber railway sleeper, on the outer ends, one of each type per sleeper”. We now know the sleepers are stacked in a garden at a house near Pershore which has recently changed hands. The Permanent Way Institution has been contacted. They are intrigued but do not know the significance either. A suggestion has been made that they could be of GWR origin and refer to miles and chains? The following Website is another clue:- < https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_nail > The references 2; 3; & 4 are interesting. Who would have thought that Sleeper Nails would be collectable? I do not for one moment think that the sleepers near Pershore originated in the USA. However is there any evidence that Cornwall railways used sleeper nails at one time? If any of your members could help solve this mystery we would be very interested to hear from the society. Please note, I will not be available for the next two weeks so I will be unable to reply to emails until the beginning of October. Best wishes Don Asher FRSC Volunteer You will find clicking on the Wikipedia link above very interesting and informative. Can anybody else out there give us more of a clue or have seen any. Pictures please.

Return of hoppers after time at Looe Guy Vincent On the gloomy but dry morning of Wednesday September 14th 70812 with five HQA ballast hoppers and 70817 in tow approaches Westbury South junction and passes 'Dilton Marsh 10' public foot crossing at 110m 51ch with Tuesday evening's 6C42 1924 Westbury - Looe - Westbury ballast working. This train was recently featured by regular CRS contributor, driver Alan Peters, as it carried out its duties on the branch. Once in the yard at Westbury 70817 was detached and 70812 then hauled the hoppers a short distance before reversing them into the virtual quarry sidings for refilling. By chance I needed to go to into Westbury on my rest day so took the opportunity to catch this working en-route. Regards to all, Guy Vincent Many thanks Guy. Saturday 10th September CHIPPENHAM 1 and 2) 158767 departs with the 2M27 1510 Swindon-Westbury via Melksham. This was in the station for a few minutes as it has to wait for the eastbound 2M20 1505 Westbury-Swindon to clear Thingley East Jcn, the line from Bradford Jcn being only single track. Right behind 2M27 was WCRC's recently repainted 47813 (formerly named SS Great Britain when operated by BR and FGW) with the 5Z31 1409 Southall-Bristol Kingsland Road ECS for Sunday's Bristol- Par excursion behind LMS 6233. Later in the week the train was back on the WR again working off Bristol Kingsland Road! 5) A bonus shot of 37175 with the test train in the yard at Westbury on the morning of Saturday 10th. I was engaged in a routine 'refresh' of the DMU sidings and walking routes and seeing this revived memories of happy times 40 plus years ago when Saturday mornings often involved a visit to Westbury for a look round the diesel depot and any new locos to 'cop'. This area was where the depot fuelling road sidings were located. With regards, Guy Vincent Chippenham Berkley Marsh Approaching Bradford-on-Avon Westbury Yard Many thanks Guy for your summary of workings.
The looe branch Peter Murnaghan Mission accomplished As you know, the mid-Cornwall resignalling project will see the closure of signal boxes at Lostwithiel, Par and Truro in November 2023. As part of the scheme, on the branch to Looe, the existing open level crossings at Lodge Farm and Terras where, at the latter, trains must make a compulsory stop before proceeding, will be upgraded to locally controlled Automatic Barrier crossings. The train crew will still operate manually the points at Coombe Junction. As the two open crossings have a limited future, I was out today to capture 150 261 crossing the Cornish lanes without gates. Best wishes, Peter Many thanks Peter - a very worthwhile exercise taken place in good weather and with a high tide at Terras to complete the scene. One wonders why the operation of Combe Junction cannot be simplified with high level control panel accessed from cab level. Burn for Butterleigh Halt Colin Burges Despite clocking 45 miles on Thursday, it won't be listed as a ride because I was only filling in some gaps in my Exe Valley coverage. Nearly two hours of the day was lost in chinwagging: before I'd even got my truck off shed, a B.T. chap from the neighbouring exchange stopped me, followed later by long sessions with the pharmacist who lets the cottage at Upexe Crossing and Mike, the chap who looks after B.T. grounds, who was at the Bickleigh Exchange. On my way up the main road, I had to satisfy my curiosity, aroused for some time: Why was the footpath gate leading to Burn Halt almost overgrown? I found what I had guessed I would find. ![]() The faithful steed at Sandy Lane leads towards Rewe and the main line foot crossing. I'm not sure whether N.R. has the right to block the path. A notice warning of the crossing's closure and the reason for it should have been posted but access along the right of way to the lineside I would have thought should have been maintained. 16th September 2022. Copyright Colin Burges Many thanks indeed Colin - I think you've won your 'cycling proficiency' badge time and time again. You take us where most mortals would fear to tread!
35 years ago today at Liskeard Neil Phillips Please find attached images taken at Liskeard 35 years ago this Friday, 16th September 1987. I was going to say “Those were the days” but 20 years earlier I had been watching the diesel-hydraulics in Cornwall on all manner of traffic, so THOSE were the days! But even so 1987 was still considerably more varied than the present scene..... Best regards, Neil Phillips ![]() The obligatory photo of the Looe branch train in its platform, with my sons then aged 6 & 4 patiently wondering if Dad had photographed enough trains yet (I had at Liskeard, but we went on to St Germans to photograph a few more......) The eldest is now 6’ 5”, his ‘little’ brother 2” taller! 16 September 1987. Many thanks Neil - what a record.

Duchess returns Twerton Paul Negus A couple of shots (in rather difficult lighting conditions) of Duchess of Sutherland approaching the station building of Twerton-on-Avon, located west of Oldfield Park Station, over Brunel's Grade II listed Twerton viaduct. This was the Belmond Pullman: Historic Bath by Steam tour, which was returning to London Victoria Station this evening. Twerton-on Avon was so called to distinguish it from Tiverton (source: Wikipedia) and was closed due to competition from the electric trams which ran underneath the very bridge on which the platforms were located! The station building is now used by a local property maintenance company as their office and stores. Kind regards, Paul Negus Many thanks Paul. Bath Green Park Paul Negus Please find attached a couple of shots of the scaffolding going up inside the roof of Bath Green Park station today 13th September 2022. The closer photograph shows the "towers" being constructed along the length of the glazed canopy. Hinksley Yard Rail Riders Driver Alan Peters DB 66175 is the current locomotive named 'Rail Riders' which was the Hinksey yard pilot on 6th September 2022, A close up of the nameplate which incorporates the APT logo. A picture of the original 47406 'Rail Riders' at Saltley in 1986 - Alan Peters Rail Riders, was a club for young rail enthusiasts run by British Rail in the United Kingdom between 1981 and 1991. Membership entitled children aged 5-15 to discounted rail travel, receipt of a regular quarterly magazine called Rail Riders Express and free entry to the Rail Riders World model railway exhibit at York Station. On 8 October 2019 it was announced that a new club, unconnected with the original, would revive the 'Rail Riders' name and would be launched in February 2020, nearly 30 years after the original club closed. The club sponsored two class 47 locomotives, one from 1981 to 1988 and another from 1988 to 1992. These were 47406 Rail Riders and 47488 Rail Riders. (From Wikipedia) Many thanks indeed Alan - a most interesting item. Tailpiece to Railriders Trevor Tremetick I was interested in the piece on the Rail Riders locos that I saw on the site this morning. This is my shot of 47406, the (I think) original ‘Rail Riders’, unfortunately not in the West Country, but near Potters Bar on the ECML with the 1H95 17.13 Kings Cross to Peterborough service on August 15, 1986. She was a Gateshead engine at the time. Many thanks Trevor - well spotted.
