Cornish Railways
Andrew Jones

In answer to Alex Fishers question.
Cornish Railways was really the dream of one man, Arthur H J Eplett, the son of a railwayman.
‘Rusty’ as he was locally known was what some would call ‘a rugged individualist.’
He was a passionate advocate of Cornwalls Railways and desperately tried to hang on to its infrastructure and prevent its ultimate demise under ‘Big Brother British Rail.’
He ran many local initiatives and tried to micro manage Cornwalls Railway from his Truro base.
Established in July 1983, he endeavoured to stay under the radar for a few years, but eventually was found out when his crossed Cornish flag logo started to appear on the class 37 clay locos.
Head office decided that this unofficial branding was against its general policy and eventually removed the separate management of Cornwall around 1986, thus ending a brief but eventful period.

Very best wishes Andrew and Diane Jones

More on 'Cornish Railways'
Martin J Duff

I can assist with Alex’s enquiry. Rail Enthusiast magazine in September 1984 ran a very good article about Cornish Railways. CR was launched on 11/07/1983. The brand was strong, with some lovely publicity including mugs and a tie. Such items are now most collectible! British Rail “Western at Work” no.4 concerning Cornwall Railway was published in 1984 and has a lot of suitable information in it. I’d be happy to be put in touch with Alex “offline”.

Good Morning all
This morning’s piece on Cornish Railways brought back some memories. I may have sent this before, but here’s my shot of 37196 Tre Pol & Pen and 37308 at Par with the headboard up. My slide is annotated ‘Down china clay empties 06.09.85’, which you will no doubt recall was the date of Clun Castle’s visit.

I also remember Guard Vic Millington coming through the train as we crossed the Royal Albert Bridge, saying: “Have your passports ready please.”

Regards, Trevor Tremethick

A footnote by KJ
In the old days an organisation called the 'Railtours Operators Association' was formed in an effort to prevent clashes of railtour operating dates. Roger Winnen and I attended such a meeting at Swindon.  There was one B.R. official present - he didn't seem to like 'Rusty' and regarded him as perhaps 'The Pest from the West' - my words, nobody else's. However, we,  in the CRS were very sorry to hear of his passing.

Yelverton Station on the afternoon of 22 September 1962
On Thursday last, 22 September 2022, the website published photos taken on the morning of Saturday 22 September 1962 at Laira Shed. That afternoon I visited Yelverton Station on the branch to Launceston to see a couple of trains pass through, as follows:
5725       4574 runs in on the 3.05pm Plymouth to Launceston train, running three minutes early. I was standing by the buffer stop at the end of a siding.
5726       A general view of Yelverton Station looking north; only the left hand line was in use.
5727       4555 leaves Yelverton Tunnel and passes through the station non-stop with 11 wagons on the afternoon goods from Launceston

I, KJ wrote to the editor of the Chard Flyer asking permission to publish the above copy from withing the 'Flyer'.  Anthony Bucke wrote back as follows -
Good morning Keith,
Thank you for the message. Yes I am very happy that our article is positioned at the Chard Junction site on your map. Your scan is an article within the Chard flyer, not the cover, so gives more information for any visitors to your website.
You may be interested in Bridport as well? We also produce The Bridport flyer, and over the past few editions have supported initiatives to re-open the West Bay to Maiden Newton line. More information at www.thebridportflyer.co.uk.
Please let me know if you would like to use any of the previous articles?
Best wishes,
Anthony Bucke. Mob 07854 377649.
Having clicked on the above link  and got into their Home Page look along the top and click on the 'Bridport Railway and you will see a well illustrated plan to re-instate the Bridport Branch from Maiden Newton to Bridport.
Also look at page 15 of the guide and you will see 'The station Kitchen' - from this click on their website to see the attractive changes which have been made to West Bay station and the adjoining coach.

R.I.P.
Rick Palmer and Nick Perring
Sadly two funerals took place yesterday - both cremations.
These were at Treswithian Camborne of Rick Palmer - former committee member and much missed booksales officer. In his euology considerable reference was made to his railway interests and in front of his coffin on the bier a rare 'O' gauge model of 4472 was placed. He is sadly missed by all. The funeral was attended by several CRS members.

                                   -------------------
A report on the funeral of Nick Perring is provided by Paul Barlow - Paul writes.

The funeral of my great friend Nick Perring took place today.

Nick had been a volunteer at the SDR for 48 years and also was a S and T engineer on BR and Network rail. He specialised in mechanical signaling until his retirement 5 years ago. Often working in Cornwall. He was well known and popular enthusiast and will be sorely missed by many. He was also a avid Plymouth Argyle fan. His funeral was attended by several hundred of his friends and his family.

The train took Nick on his last trip on the SDR before a Funeral service at Weston Mill crematorium in Plymouth.

A sad day but a wonderful send off for a great railwayman and friend of many.

Kind regards.  Paul.

Some additional info on Cranmore Box - received from our good friend Roy Hart out in Rangoon. The item was published at 07.15, his reply at 07.20!
Cranmore has a Cornish connection: the box there closed back in 1968 and the frame dismantled. The building housed an art museum when David Sheherd was alive. Today the box has the lever frame from Coombe Junction., 26 levers -probably not enough for ESR requirements, so it may have to be extended before it can be brought into use. The fràme is a modern one - it was new in 1956.
Roy  Thanks Roy.

Wiltshire Wanderings
Brian Pibworth

Good Morning Keith,

Your letter to The Chard Flyer is spot on and they will surely relish the extra publicity our Society can give.

The last pictures I took, before I lost mobility, were in Wiltshire during the first week of September.  We planned to cycle the Kennet & Avon towpath, from Devizes to Bath but only limped as far as the aqueduct over the railway, just South of Bradford Junction.  Although it was raining and miserable for cyclists and photographers alike, I rather like the shot of the stone empties threading their way across the junction towards Swindon.

A few days later, having temporarily given up walking and cycling I visited Swindon STEAM Museum for their excellent model railway show.  On return I found myself at Swindon Station with the Theale Puma fuel tank train lurking in the Down Loop awaiting a path to South Wales. The best shot is clearly from the Up platform, across two tracks but the passenger timetable is remarkably unhelpful and often plans for a long passenger train to obscure the view. So it was on this day but I took the gamble and reckoned I could squeeze off a couple of semi-tele shots before losing the view if necessary.  The following sequence shows just how this happened in reality with pic (1) being a passable 3/4 view with the Up Paddington "Runner Bean" at platform and waiting to depart.  I like to think the driver held departure for a few more seconds to let me get the shot and if so, many thanks.  The train then departed (2) and by the time it passed (3) I was left with the rear tanks of the fuel train.

The purists would say that a head-on shot from the Dn platform was the safest plan but, in my case, the excitement of pulling off a better view always wins through.

With kind regards, Brian

East Somerset Railway
Cranmore
Guy Vincent
This weekend we made one of our occasional visits to the East Somerset Railway at Cranmore, availing ourselves of a ride down to Mendip Vale and back behind BR Standard 46447, the first time we had done this for some years.   There were three former Great Western steam locos 'on shed'  4110, 4247 and 4555.   4110 is making excellent progress as its restoration continues, and 4555 looked for all the world as if it was standing between duties in the corner of a genuine GWR steam shed, very atmospheric indeed. In this age of  'elf 'n safety'  it is a privilege to be able to walk through the shed and soak up the atmosphere of days long gone, you can stand and watch work being carried out in the main workshop from a small viewing area which has details of what is taking place and of other projects that have been completed there.   Outside we found a recently restored former Isle of Wight class 483 vehicle in original 1938 London Transport livery, quite different from the Network South East red, white and blue colours applied when it was refurbished and sent across the Solent back in 1988.

Things appear to be on the 'up' at Cranmore as we found a large number of secondhand railway books and publications to browse through, most at very reasonable prices, some of these are in a former WH Smith newsagents kiosk and bookstall that was moved to Cranmore from Salisbury station.  There is also a very interesting collection of artefacts and relics in a museum that has been set up in the station building.   The signal box is now seeing limited use as a control point for daily operations and work is ongoing to get the signalling and pointwork into use. The 'box retains the original token machine and some tokens that were in use up to the abolition of Witham Signal Box (at what is now known as East Somerset Junction) in 1984.

Best regards, Guy Vincent

An update of progress at the new Marsh Barton station, Exeter, The footbridge is in position and platforms look nearly complete. There are tall hoardings all around the site making photography very limited. The information board says completion by winter 2022, so I assume this means the start of the new timetable in December.

Hope this is of interest, Kind regards. Paul

Class 225 set and other topics
Taunton
Guy Vincent

One afternoon recently while waiting for my booked train at Taunton I came across an empty 255 'Castle' set stabled in the east-end bay platform 6.  This was something I had not seen before although I gather that the service concerned, 2U22 1513 to Cardiff Central, is scheduled to start from here on weekdays.  The set arrives as 2C75 1200 ex Cardiff Central at 1352 at P3 and then shunts out to Taunton East Junction before reversing at Ground Signal E604 and running into P6.

Many years ago when initially learning the route from Bristol to Taunton I was told by the Route School Manager at Bristol that when the Taunton station area was resignalled it was done 'back to front' as trains approaching from the west can arrive at any platform (bar 6 of course) but from the east trains are only able to come in at platforms 2 or 3 with any needing to go into P6 having to run back out as described to Taunton East and reverse.  Should a terminating DMU need to depart eastwards from either P4 or 5 it has to run out from 2 or 3 to Taunton West then reverse and come back into the appropriate platform.  Bear in mind how often trains from the western direction need to reverse and go back (never?!) and how often they do from the eastern direction (many!) and you will understand the manager's comment!

After completing the above I remembered a visit to Taunton I made on 29th March 1988 just before class 33 hauled Mk 1 coaches on local stopping services were replaced by modern DMU stock.  The 1615 BTM-TAU arrived at P2 and, once clear of passengers loco 33029 took the stock out to Taunton West and reversed it back into P5.  33029 was detached by the shunter, returned to Taunton West and came back through P4 (driven from the secondman's side!) to Taunton East where after another reversal it ran down onto the other end of the train ready to work the 1740 stopper to Bristol.  Just another day on the railway, nothing out of the ordinary at all.  Try doing this today....

Also note the two class 08 shunters in P1 and the Railfreight-liveried van in the adjacent sidings, most likely for use by Taunton Cider Co at Norton Fitzwarren.  33029, by the way, is still in service with WCRC and on Saturday August 13th with sister loco 33025 worked 'The West Somerset Steam Express' charter from London Paddington to Minehead and back due to the temporary ban on steam traction then in force due to lineside fire risk.

Test Train at
Westbury & Melksham
Guy Vincent

Today (22nd September 2022) I had intended going out to see the monthly run of the Network Rail New Measurement Train (1Q23 0558 Reading Triangle-Salisbury-Exeter St Davids-Salisbury-Westbury-Southampton-Reading) and while checking its whereabouts noticed that the schedule had just been altered.    After going to Exeter 1Q23 terminated at Salisbury from where it was given a VSTP path: 1Z23 1258 Salisbury-Reading Triangle via Westbury, Melksham and Swindon.

After seeing the train at Westbury I went onto Melksham for the relatively rare spectacle of it heading east just after 2pm.  For the record the complete formation was 43290 977995 977994 977993 975814 977984 and 43299.  Friday 23rd should see the NMT reach Penzance, unless of course it is amended again.   The former LNER power cars are very shabby now and in need of repainting.

Four images attached. Best regards. Guy Vincent.

Autumn approaches
Craig Munday
The evenings are pulling in, and there's a nip in the air, heralding the onset of Autumn. I must admit to the season being my favourite photographically. The changes in the leaves and foliage can present wonderful results, if the light is right.

Already, our teams are out inspecting and treating the rails if necessary, earlier than scheduled this year due to the extreme dry spell through the exceptional Summer.

Here are some pictures prior to the arrival of the RHTT, eagerly awaited by many in pristine condition before its battle with the elements!

DRS class 57, 57305 has been drafted into the GWR fleet to replace 57306 which is due a major exam then RHTT duties in East Anglia. This is the second spell with GWR, as it worked regularly in 2013 in its yellow livery. The sleepers in seen at Camborne on 14th.

On the 17th some pictures of the Bodmin & Wenford home diesel fleet were captured as type 4s, 47306 & 50042 ran an extensive service, including some "mini" driver experience runs.

On 18th I had a shift at Lostwithiel and 802112 caught some super light heading west in the evening.

On the day of HM funeral, 66077 was stood on the fuel road at St Blazey and made a lovely study in the strong morning sunshine.

Finally for now, a day of brilliant sunshine on my day off allowed a study of the welcome daylight run of the Imerys JIA wagons down from the Midlands. This formally ran overnight Tuesdays, but was amended to daytime Tuesdays instead. Just to add confusion, today's ran on a Wednesday and 66006 looked grand in the cutting along by Lostwithiel golf course. The castle and house by the river nicely lit too.
Then a scoot along the A390 to Golant to see the lunchtime clay worked by HP powered 66077. The incoming tide allowed an indulgent reflection in the water too! Both images from 21st Sept.

All the best, Craig.

London Semaphores - shortest branch line
The Greenford branch
Simon Howard

Took a trip today (22nd September 2022)  from the newly completed West Ealing station to Greenford – all of ten minutes including two intermediate stops. 165 122 was on duty. In the first shot the shuttle is arriving while 66512 passes on the adjacent platform. The second pic is of journey’s end at Greenford next to the Central Line platform, while the last shot shows what must be some of the very last lower quadrant signals in the Capital – nestling in the undergrowth at Greenford and controlling West Greenford Junction – an important link from the WR mainline to the Marylebone line, which has seen increased use as a result of HS2 construction materials traffic.

Date nails - Don Asher.
An Update
Graham Mann
Keith
In regard to the “date nails” I seem to vaguely remember these as nails for indicating the  cant of the track, looking at the pics there doesn’t seem to be any above the number 6 which is the general UK cant maximum (6” or 150mm) which would further substantiate that.

Hope this helps. Regards  Graham Mann Mob. 07920155651
Many thanks Graham - perhaps that's 'nailed it' - any further comments appreciated.

Mid Cornwall Metro
A summary from Railnews by
John Roberts

Keith, if you can scrounge a copy of the staff paper Railnews from your local station, the September issue contains a feature on Connecting Cornwall. In addition to Devizes new station, Mid Cornwall Metro will proceed to the next stage in the bidding process for £56m from the Restoring Your Railway Fund. This sees an accessible footbridge at Par, some redoubling at Tregoss, a second platform at Newquay, and general platform extensions, station improvements and smartcard validators. The bid includes a panel at Goonbarrow to control Tregoss and Newquay, but this may be superceded by control from Exeter. The aim is for work to be completed in early 2025 for an hourly service between Newquay and Falmouth with a journey time of 1h45.

A prequal project sees a new park & ride station at Nansledan (Close to Quintrell Downs) , and a new roadbridge to replace Chapel and Trencreek Crossings. Cornwall Council’s website says this will all be completed in 2021, but as it hasn’t been it’s likely that the crossings will need to be replaced anyway, and Treloggan Crossing may need a footbridge, to cater for the doubling in service frequency and increased linespeed.

Members of my generation will remember that from around June 1968 Par and Camborne were downgraded to speed up the InterCity service, and Newquay trains extended to Bodmin Road, which coincidentally gave Lostwithiel an improved service. When did Par revert to being the advertised junction?

There are still occasional through trains between Newquay and Plymouth, plus of course the summer Long distance services. I’m not aware there has ever been a through train from Newquay to Falmouth via Par, but in the 1950s there was an occasional through train via Perranporth, although I suspect this was more to balance Truro’s stock and crew mileage rather than for passenger benefit.

Further comment from John.  The 1968 Transport Act brought in the concept of the Social Railway, and to cover its costs BR was encouraged to sell the family silver (railway land) which is why so many supermarkets are built in former goods yards. The 70s and 80s saw a declining railway, so when Newquay Box closed in 1987, the former platform 2 used less infrastructure and platform 3 was sold to a supermarket who don't want to sell it back, so Network Rail may have to foot the additional cost of rebuilding platform 1. Now we have a railway resurgence I wouldn't advise buying a property near railway land in case they ever want it back!
Many thanks to you John for your most interesting summary, we look forward to hearing more from you as and when.

N.B. If you would like to receive your own personal e-mailed copy of Railnews google 'Railnews Publication' and from there you can register for a copy.

Date Nails
Colin Burges

Re Query from Dan Asher in the 'News' 19th September 2022.
Dear Keith,
The P.Way at Christow is well stocked with what you call "date nails." The fractions would have been used to mark a distance measurement.
There aren't any letters so I couldn't do a "C.R.S." I thought of doing the combined age of C.R.S. members but ...

This is the only place where I have used them: to mark a change of gauge on a short track section which has 12 and 20 lb. rails welded together.

Timetables
St Germans
Andrew Hickson
Dear Keith
With the demise of printed railway timetables, potential passengers without internet access need to rely on local initiatives such as this one I came across at St Germans station. Produced by the St Germans Public Transport Users Group, it lists all stopping trains and times to the main destinations.

In contrast, I found at an information point in a nearby village an official comprehensive Bus Times booklet which gives full details of all Cornish buses, aided by a county map.
Back at St Germans, 43194 slows with the 1418 Plymouth to Penzance train beside the attractive camping carriages.

Many thanks for your comments and photographs Andrew. As you say without internet access or use of a mobile phone one is rather limited. However I found the freely available bus timetable complete with maps to be excellent.
