Autumnal Scenes
Craig Munday

There, I've mentioned the "A" word again. Autumnal, it seemed the Summer of 2018 would never end, but August was a bit limp compared to the heatwave.

34052 is seen at St Blazey on Sept 2nd.

The light hasn't been special lately, but a lovely bright afternoon on 5th saw me hook up with Dave Mitchell and Nigel Tregoning who were out with similar expectations.

The wet conditions have caused the lineside vegetation to sprout up beyond belief. The recently cut back waterway at Tywardreath and Rundles Walk, St Blazey getting overgrown. Also the top of the drive shot at Golant was almost gone. Fortunately Ann & Chris kindly let us down onto their patio at Robins Rest for the classic causeway shot.

All the best for now,  Craig Munday
Many thanks Craig

Mixed Fortunes on the Paignton & Dartmouth Railway
Roger Winnen
Travelling to Paignton yesterday we took advantage of 1st Class Advance purchase singles on the 07.41 from Penzance and return of only £8.60 in each direction. First Class travel entitles passengers to complimentary food and drink aboard buffet services. Well worth it!
However the weather was hit and miss, and Paignton was very quiet as most of the tourist seemed to have returned home. 6023 King Edward 11 was running together with L94

Very sad news
     - John Cornelius

Dear Keith and Roger,

Very sadly, John passed away last evening at 11pm. In the end it was very quick but peaceful.
As yet, I do not know the funeral date.
Even yesterday John wanted to look up the Cornwall website to see the contents...he was an ardent fan.

Kind regards,
Jane Cornelius - Johns sister.

Newquay Tunnel
Roger Winnen

On the 13th September 1982 the CRS paid a visit to Newquay following the Treffry Tramway. A highlight was enter the tunnel through which the tramway passed on route to the harbour. A short while ago Colin Burges brought us pictures taken very recently in its role as a surf and bathing outlet.  Prior to this it was for a number of years the location of an aquarium and Roger Winnen brings you pictures taken inside the tunnel during this period.

We had a day out in Torquay today. £31.70 for two of us (with senior railcards) travelling 1st class seemed very reasonable. Anyway, a few photos taken at the rather charming station at Torquay.

Penultimate Weekend of
HST's on the Newquay branch
Clive Smith
A busy day of photography on Saturday 1st September 2018. Many pictures and videos taken recording for posterity the 08.57 Plymouth to Newquay and return 11.30 Newquay to Paddington. Honours were provided by power cars 43191 and the colourful 43027.

(1) Refreshments are loaded into a proper buffet car at Plymouth station as the 08.57 to Newquay is displayed on the indicator.

(2) The service has the road from the Newquay platform at Par. The signal box and semaphores are nicely reflected on the side of the HST.

(3) The token has been collected from St Blazey box.

(4) The HST passes under Treffry Viaduct on the climb through Luxulyan valley.

(5) Crossing the 09.35 Newquay to Newcastle Cross Country voyager at Goonbarrow Junction as the signalman transfers the token between trains. Will XC still be running HSTs to the resort next summer ?

(6) 43191 on the blocks at Newquay amidst the palm trees.

(7) View of the 11.30 to Paddington from the concourse at Newquay.

(8) The much changed Newquay station with now solitary platform. Gauging tests have been completed by Network Rail and the station awaits its first IET in the near future.

(9) 43027 with its 90 Glorious Years transfers leads the 11.30 to Paddington.

(10) Passing the 09.46 Exeter St Davids to Newquay at Goonbarrow Junction. This train is a double sprinter set running in the path of a former Paddington to Newquay service. Could GWR Castle 2+4 sets appear at the resort in the future ?

Victorian Trainspotting
Roy Hart

How many travellers on the Cornish main line (railway enthusiasts among them) are aware of what was the ultimate trainspotting venue?
On the up side, three quarters of a mile or so beyond the site of Grampound Road station, is the ancient Barton of Trenowth, still the site of a busy farm today.
In 1859, the landowner, fascinated and taken by the prospect of the trains which now regularly passed his property with the opening of the Cornwall Railway, decided to build for himself a permanent structure in which to sit and watch the trains.
A Victorian folly with pointed roof, decorative corbels and finials stands to this day among  the trees of Barn Wood, part of the extensive Trenowth woods, only about 40 yards from the up main.  Today it is roofless and invisible from passing trains –obscured by the vegetation which has blanked off so much of the lineside view in recent decades.
Imagine, if you will, an old Victorian gentleman retiring to his woodland hideaway, - just to watch the trains!
I am most grateful to Roy for sending in this item and did a little bit of research myself using what maps are available but I'm afraid that I can find not a trace. If anybody can enlighten us as to the actual location I would be delighted to hear from you. KJ

This very recently received picture of the Brendon Incline Winding House on the West Somerset Mineral Railway taken in the late 60's by John Thorn, puts, to me a completely different perspective on the location. In later pictures tree growth around the ruin completely covers the hillside into which the house is set.  Many thanks to you, john, for this view.

View opened up at
Lea Mount
Clive Smith

(31st August)  Friday's beautiful weather saw me in Dawlish and I took the opportunity to get a bird's eye view from Lea Mount of GWR HSTs as they now gradually hand over to the IETs. By coincidence some tree surgeons were just finishing clearing six to ten feet of trees from the very top viewpoint and this has now opened up the highest possible vista of this wonderful iconic railway and coastline.

A few photos of HSTs and the cements in and around Totnes on Thursday.  I kept tabs on the progress of the cements through Real Time Trains . Alas my tracking of the Castle Donnington to Laira move due at 12.03 went awry as the train made up time before Newton Abbot. In fact I had no idea what this train was having had no prior 'gen'. So I was most annoyed to see a Europhoenix 37 pulling two HST barrier vehicles over a bridge as I walked under it !  Maybe I should join South West Rail Gen. My disappointment was made up for later by a fortuitous crossing of HSTs..

Regards  Clive Smith

(3) Viewed from Three Arches Bridge west of Totnes and running just 6 minutes late, the re-timed 08.30 Paddington to Newquay headed by 43005 staggers up the bank and ground to a halt at the next bridge some 300 yards on from here. According to RTT the train was delayed at Plymouth for an hour but I have no idea why but the 43005 was clearly unhealthy. 30th August 2018. Copyright Clive Smith

(5) Whilst I was positioning to photograph the 10.00 ex-Penzance I could hear another HST approaching from the opposite direction. All framing went out the window as I pointed the camera and hoped. Luckily the also delayed 06.16 Leeds to Plymouth crossed the up London right on cue. 30th August 2018. Copyright Clive Smith (10 out of 10 Clive, well caught)

Brendon Incline
John Cornelius
John has very kindly sent us some pictures he took of the incline way back in 1981, even then it was quite heavily overgrown. The Incline 1,000 yards long rose from the valley at  Comberow to a summit up on the Brendon Hills.  From here the main line headed NW to Gupworthy, there was also a standard gauge spur to Raleigh Mine.  The spur was short lived and doesn't appear on maps and neither does a later narrow gauge line from the summit. Reference to the map courtesy of the National Library of Scotland (Click) will show the arrangements at the top and bottom of the incline as well as the location of the winding house which lay to the NE of the local road. Zoom in and out and pan as you wish.

John started his exploration at the top of the incline and worked down. Photo 1 The WSMR having passed the top of the Brendon incline crosses the B3224. We are looking east. There are remains of thebridge abutment to the right. The date is 27th August 1981 Copyright John Cornelius.
