The 'New' DMU's for the Gunnislake branch                                                                                               - a report from Derek Buttivant

24/9/2015

Good morning Keith.

I have been reading in the October issue of Modern Railways about the work being done to convert London Underground D78 stock into diesel-powered trains for possible branch line services across the UK.

In the magazine there are two articles about the astonishing project being undertaken by Adrian Shooter under his Vivarail brand to create a "new", inexpensive diesel-powered train (using Ford engines) by converting and refurbishing London Underground "D" stock trains. (For those unfamiliar with these trains, they are the ones that have been used on the District Line - with single-leaf doors - for the past 28 years). One article details the technical alterations being made to the old trains to make them fit for running on the main line railway - including improved crash-worthiness - while the second article reports on a test-ride in one of the prototype trains. One of the articles includes the following item:

"GROCKLE TRAIN Testing in passenger service [of the 3-car Class 230 demonstrator train] will 'follow in the new year'. While Adrian Shooter would not be drawn on the location of the test service, informed sources expect it will be on First Great Western [sic] under the requirement in the Direct Award franchise agreement.  Bristol-Severn Beach had been suggested as the evaluation route but FGW has settled on the Plymouth-Gunnislake branch with the unit based and maintained at Laira depot.. This is the logical choice since the Gunnislake branch will be more demanding operationally."

History repeats itself....remember when the Leyland bus-based Class140, predecessor of the "Pacer" trains was tried experimentally on the Gunnislake branch?

Kind regards,

Derek                                           Very interesting, many thanks Derek.

Engineers test train                                         Report by David Tozer

24/9/2015

Hi Keith,
The 0456 Old Oak Common – Exeter (New Yard) has run today. I chose a location not used for many a year, due to line side vegetation and a pathway being closed off due to the construction of a few new homes.

43062 ‘John Armit’ approaches the site of the former Exmouth Junction home signal running a few minutes early.

 Dave                                                         Many thanks David

A bit more on yesterdays problems with the green thing!  A report and pictures by Keith Barrow

24/9/2015

Hi Keith,
Returning from London to Redruth yesterday afternoon I was delighted to find the pristine GWR-liveried HST (43188+LA15+43187) waiting in Platform 3 at Paddington ready to form 1C86, the 15.06 to Penzance. The joy was short-lived however, as just a few minutes into the journey the rear power car was shut down with a power module fault. A fitter came aboard at Reading in a bid to rectify the problem, and a spare parts were waiting for the train at Exeter St Davids, but it was all to no avail. The train continued through Devon running on one power car, struggling up Dainton and skipping the scheduled stop at Totnes for a decent run at Rattery. The train terminated 39 minutes late at Plymouth and passengers for Cornwall transferred onto 1C87, which rolled in a few minutes behind the stricken train. The train crew did a great job of keeping passengers informed, but overall not a great day for the new GWR brand!
Kind Regards  Keith Barrow

Many thanks to you for the excellent report and pictures.

Horror of a road sign.                               By Mick House

24/9/2015

I regularly visit Apex Bridge over the A30 near Scorrier in Cornwall to photograph the passing trains and on the 22nd September everything was OK but to my horror on the 23rd September just one day later my view from the bridge looking down the tracks towards Truro was not a good one, it was devastated by the introduction of a massive road sign as you will see in the following photos. By Mick House.  Very frustrating.

A glimpse into the future                          Report from Mike Roach

24/9/2015

While we were away in Kent we made several journeys on the Hitachi Javelin trains. Most only a few miles. But last Sunday we travelled on the 16.10 Javelin from St. Pancras to Margate, which travels down HS1 as far as Ashford International. Quite impressive. At 140 mph it was smoother than an HST at 125 mph. Passing the adjacent M20 the traffic looked as though it was barely moving. The interior layout of the Javelin is quite spacious and much better than cross country voyagers. Hitachi are building the new trains for the GW electrification and later trains to Penzance. Although I was disappointed to see that the majority of our trains will be only 5 coaches.

WRONG COLOUR TRAIN*  Not a good start!!                                                                   * A 'play' on the old saying 'Wrong kind of snow'!!

The 15.06 Paddington to Penzance train expected to be the first one to Penzance in the new Great Western colours was, after a series of faults, including the shut down of the rear power car terminated at Plymouth Station.

David Tozer spends some time at Dawlish.

Hi Keith,
A few photographs of the sea wall that has been built up at Dawlish. The approaching HST is the 10.00 London (Paddington) – Paignton.
 Dave   Many thanks David.
