Exeter 1983
Clive Smith

47533 passes the semaphores east of Exeter St Davids' Red Cow Crossing with the 11.51 Leeds - Paignton on the 2nd July 1983. Note at the back of the train where it looks like two Derby Research Test Centre red and blue liveried coaches, a Mk1 half brake and what appears to be a Mk3.No idea why these would be conveyed.

           Regards, Clive Smith.
Many thanks Clive.

Taken just over 40 years ago - the lady will have grey hair by now and the children will of course be fully grown up - I wonder where they are and indeed wonder what happened to the locomotive, the coaches and the track?  Anybody know?
According to a website two of the steam engines survive today at The Royal Victoria Railway near Southampton.

Memories HSTs at Penzance
Roger Winnen
In the next month or so the remaining 2+4 car HSTs will be named in the Castle Class series. Seeing that a list of 24 power cars is to be named Its only fitting to record the present fleet both carrying names and not before the change over. According to reports the Great Western Depot at Laira has the new nameplates.

August Peak Weeks
Craig Munday

The high season 8 weeks has provided carnage on the roads, with the new station facilities at St Erth also doing a bouncing trade. The double DMUs on the branch often standing room only as the shuttles pass the box.

I guess Summer Saturdays don't stir the senses as they did years ago, but we are still essentially moving people around.

Cheers for now,   Craig.   Many thanks Craig. A smashing bumper bundle for a very busy months on the roads where there are traffic jams everywhere.

Lil Davy's Bridge
Colin Burges
Wednesday the 7th August was my last chance of the week for a ride out and although there was a heavy shower in Marsh Barton while I was in my truck collecting bits, the day turned out very nicely. I rode out to Stoke Canon and then through Killerton, Clyst Hydon and Payhembury along empty lanes with wonderful views to Sidmouth Junction, whence I followed the Southern back to town, clocking 43 miles.
Many thanks Colin.

Imberbus 2019
Warminster/Imber
Guy Vincent

A report on the Imberbus Specials kindly supplied by Guy Vincent - many thanks Guy.
Warminster station was overwhelmed today by a large influx of visitors who came from far and wide for the annual 'Imberbus' event which sees a large fleet of classic red London buses running a shuttle service to the abandoned village of Imber on Salisbury Plain. UK Railtours ran a special train from Waterloo for this event, formed of preserved class 33 D6515 (33012), the 'London Transport' 4-TC set and class 73 73107.   I was unable to see the outward run and sadly 'proper' photography of the return train was near impossible due to the sheer numbers on the platforms and footbridge but I did manage to grab a few shots of the 1Z84 1704 departure for Waterloo.  Of course, until May 1988 33012 was a regular visitor here when it made calls on the Portsmouth-Cardiff loco-hauled 'Table 132' services.  To show how much has changed I've added a scan of sister 'Crompton' 33013 arriving on the 1007 Bristol-Portsmouth service on 7th May 1987.  Note the lack of vegetation and the former Geest banana ripening and distribution warehouse on the right.  This was built in 1959-60, was rail-connected and received deliveries from Barry and Avonmouth until the early 1970s.   The factory closed in the late 1980s and was demolished to be replaced by a modern housing estate.
                                              Guy Vincent
Guys detailed reports make  fascinating reading - Many thanks.

 Platform 3 refurbishment  2019
Liskeard
Peter Murnaghan
Peter writes - I don't think that the recent refurbishment of Platform 3 at Liskeard station has featured on the site.  The splendid team at the Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership have made an excellent display of posters through the ages in the waiting area of the branch platform.
My photos show the overall effect and a close up of each of the posters, covering a different period in the line's history.  They are designed to complement the interactive App that allows visitors to watch and listen as the posters come to life and also to hear a personal commentary as trains proceed down the branch to Looe. For more information, visit Looerailheritage.com or visit the information rooms at Liskeard and Looe stations, which are manned by volunteers on weekday mornings during the summer.
Best wishes, Peter  Many thanks Peter - well worth recording

An appeal
This is further to an appeal published a couple of days ago - As archivist for the Maunsell Locomotive Society, I am always on the lookout for any photographs, spotting notes, daily duty allocation records, in fact records of any kind relating to the 5 engines the Society owns : S15 30847, V 30928 'Stowe', Us 31618/31638 and Q 30541.These records are entered into an extensive diary I am trying to compile of the pre-preservation working lives of these engines. Any assistance from CRS members would be very much appreciated and I'm happy to cover any reasonable costs incurred, particularly for photographs. Please contact me for any specific data such as dates in service and locations should this help when searching your records.

Fowey Branch
Alan Peters
Hi Keith,
The night of Saturday 10th August 2019 saw a ballast drop on the Fowey branch utilising side tippers to stock pile ballast, Colas Rail Freight provided the motive power with 66848 leading back to Westbury and 66850 on the rear of the top and tail formation. The previous weekend Freightliner provided the motive power for the same drop for future engineering work when the Railvac will visit the Fowey branch. The train departed in glorious sunshine to reach Westbury in a torrential thunderstorm!

Many thanks indeed Alan.

An appeal
Mike Frackiewicz
As Archivist for the Maunsell Locomotive Society, would it be possible to put an appeal in your magazine and/or website for any photos/spotting notes taken back in the days of steam of the following locomotives: S15 30847, Us 31618 and 31638, Q 30541 and V 30928 Stowe. The S15 in particular spent many years in the West Country working out of both Exmouth Junction and Salisbury. All 5 engines reside  at the Bluebell Railway. I would add that I am always happy to cover any reasonable costs.

Hayle Heritage Centre
Something to do.
So far August hasn't been a very summery month - not really weather for the beaches.  If however, you are interested in a real quality museum the Heritage Centre at Hayle is the place for you. Situated in Foundry Square  close by Hayle Viaduct there is parking close by at ASDA and the station is not two hundred yards away - the buses on the T1 and T2 routes are even closer. The opening hours until the end of August are Tuesday to Saturday 11.00 to 16.00 and until the end of September Tuesday to Friday 11,00 to 16.00. You can be sure of a warm welcome from the stewards on duty. You'll find much of interest of Hayle's Industrial history right from prehistoric times to the present day.  There are also many photographs of the railway scene. WELL  WORTH A  VISIT.
Picture
The outside of the Heritage Centre which is situated on the first floor of the white building nearest to the camera. Access is either by a stairway or a lift. The railway viaduct is just out of sight to the left of the picture. The clock on the tower above the centre has faces - here showed of which three showed London time and the fourth face showed Cornish Time - a difference of twenty minutes. (Information from the excellent 'Hayle Trail Guide' available at £4 from the centre).

An excellent aerial view, again courtesy the Hayle Heritage Centre. This view is taken at low tide looking down the estuary. The main line can be seen crossing the viaduct with the current Hayle station on the right. The Hayle Railway, from Redruth, followed the north bank of Copperhouse Creek coming in on the right of this picture. It then turned south to continue on the banks of the harbour alongside Penpol Terrace to the original Hayle station which lay below the viaduct on the inside of the corner at Foundry Square. Hayle Heritage Centre is situated towards the left hand end of the viaduct. The approach for vessels to the harbour was treacherous with many a ship grounding on the 'bar' of sand and rock at the entrance. Another curious feature here are the bays formed in the harbour wall to allow ships to berth really close - these two bays can clearly be seen in this view.

This excellent pictorial guide to Hayle is available at the Heritage Centre price £4. The cover picture on this guide also serves well to show the route of the Hayle Railway from Redruth which passed along what is now King George V walk on the far side of Copperhouse Creek to cross the entrance to this creek and then run down on the far side of the harbour alongside Penpol Terrace to its own passenger station situated on the curve almost beneath the viaduct. Hayle Heritage Centre with its clock tower can just be discerned.

This was Day 2 of Past Time Rail's 'Devon And Cornwall Branch Week' . Following trips to Penzance, Falmouth and St Ives the previous day, 45407 was shedded at St Blazey overnight departing from there at 11.05 as the 5Z20 with 37410 on the rear. The ECS headed to Mount Gould where the 37 then took the train to Laira Junction where the Black 5 then took the stock back to Plymouth station where it then formed the 13.42 to Par Docks and Newquay. A very busy day for me and my camera as was the week ! . This location outside Saltash was sadly lost to photographers a few years later when the farmer put extensive fencing around the mound of land overlooking the river. A photo from the other side of the creek can be found in this site's archives taken by long standing contributor Roger Geach. Regards,  Clive Smith.

Andrew Jones

Dear Keith,  just back from our travels. As promised I have attached a few of the photographs taken on the 29th April 1984 during the momentous Royal Albert Bridge walk. Our youngest daughter Sienna was only three at the time and unfortunately doesn’t remember the occasion, but has promised me that given the opportunity she will walk over the bridge on the 200th anniversary in 2059, something unfortunately  we will not be able to do given that I will be 106!
Although I know you attended the ceremony and had a camera mal function, hopefully you will recognise fellow society members or family.

Best wishes Andrew Diane and Sienna

Mike, who lived in the Plymouth area at the time had the good fortune to have a very good camera and the interest and opportunities to travel around and take the very many 'Gems' of pictures which we already have on site.  Here are two more -'Hot off the scanner' one might say. Many many thanks Mike, we look forward to more of your invaluable pictures and records of past times.

800XXX Swindon Mystery 12.32 7th August 2019. Brian Pibworth.
With reference to the above picture Brian Pibworth wrote  - "To Swindon for the GWR Museum and a chance to pick up a few freights amongst the ubiquitous Hitachi 800s.  One stopped right in front and as I recovered my composure when it blocked the PW train behind, I noticed the labelling on the undercarriage.  UREA is no stranger as we put AdBlue into our car to reduce some of the exhaust nasties and presumably GWR are doing the same, but ASPIC was beyond me.  I have looked online for railway acronyms but drawn a blank and apart from reaching for the Mary Berry books and a pint of prawns I can't think what it is.  Could any of our "insider" members help?"
David Critchlow writes - Hi all,
I believe it could be Air Supply Isolating Cock but I’m not a Hitachi expert (not an expert at anything really!) – see http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/acronyms.html
 Cheers  Regards,  Dave Critchlow
