Some spectacular views of the railway are possible by riding "The Beds" the Saturday only coaching stock of the Night Riviera by Roger Winnen

18/8/2015

Travelling on this train between Par-Plymouth & Exeter and returning to Penzance it is possible with a clean corridor window at the rear to obtain photographs normally not possible of the track behind you. Not once did I lean out of the carriage window to take this selection of photographs.

Dartmoor Railway Supporters' Association held on Saturday 15th August 2015  at Okehampton station.      A report by Jon Kelsey

17/8/2015

Hello Keith,

I wonder if you're interested in a few pictures of a ceremony the Dartmoor Railway Supporters' Association held yesterday on Okehampton station?

Former HST driver Devon County Councillor Richard Westlake MBE formally reopened the refurbished station museum as the Arthur Westlake Museum, in honour of his father. The late Arthur Westlake started with the SR in the 1930s, working his way up to driving on the Withered Arm, and subsequently becoming area manager at Okehampton station. He worked hard to keep the line to Okehampton open when it was threatened with closure, and his efforts helped ensure that the line and station are still here today.

At the same event, a plaque was unveiled in DRSA's Laboratory 11 coach, acknowledging the DRSA volunteers who restored the coach, as well as Okehampton United Charity and the anonymous sponsor who provided much financial assistance for the project.

The ceremony was attended by a group of splendid former local railwaymen, representatives of the local community, and DRSA volunteers who had worked on the coach and museum. It was a highly enjoyable event tinged with nostalgia which provided another reminder of how much the community values its railway.

The day was rounded off with a trip to Meldon on Class 205 Thumper 1118, where the guests were able to admire our new running in board, and stroll to the viaduct to walk off the substantial amounts of tea and cake they had consumed.

We'd like to thank all our volunteers, brilliant cakemaker Mary Trant, Granite Line Ltd and the BARS crew who ensured Lab11 was available on time at the station, all of whom contributed to the success of the day.

There's a fuller report on our website at http://www.dartmoor-railway-sa.org/museum_reopening

Can I just say how much I enjoy the CRS website, and not just because you sometimes say nice things about ours.

Best wishes, Jon Kelsey  DRSA Secretary and Website Editor

Many thanks for your contribution and of course your compliments - best wishes to you and all on the Dartmoor Railway.

Fine pictures from Craig Munday capture a disastrous day for steam fans.

17/8/2015

Hi Keith
The steam boys showed their disgust for a rancid diesel being on the Royal Duchy by leaving in droves. Being a diesel man, I was quite happy with WCR former Western Region 47832 being provided forward from Newton Abbot. Sadly 60009 had suffered a hot box on the way through Devon, and removed at Newton Abbot.
The class 47 looked rather fine on this prestige service, and some pictures of it climbing Treverrin bank, and around Par were taken. The returning train shot is taken at Restormel in poor light - but shows the versatility of digital photography these days!
The Driver was Ray Churchill and is featured aboard 47832 at Par.
Kind regards  Craig Munday                            Very many thanks Craig

New for Old as Sandy Lane Bridge at Gwinear East is replaced. Photographs by Roger Winnen

17/8/2015

Travelling to Plymouth on the 06.30 Cross Country Voyager from Penzance on Saturday a new bridge was being placed into position at Gwinear Road East, known as Sandy Lane Bridge at Milepost 315.34 chains. Returning in the evening an opportunity was taken in the fading light to photograph this structure from the Down Beds, the sleeper stock used on Saturdays returning from Exeter.
A further attempt was also made the next morning on the wedged 09.47 Paddington service, also catering for passengers on the cancelled 09.30 service to Edinburgh.

Lelant Station or Lelant Saltings Pictures                                                                                                   A query from Chris Slocombe

16/8/2015

I am a foreshore owner at Hayle Estuary and would like to be put in contact with:  Keith Jenkin & Trevor Tremethick.
In the 1970's they took a series of photos of the above stations.  I have seen some of these on your website and would like to locate others which may be longer shots or looking out from the platforms - which may have included views of the nearby foreshore or quays as a record of any changes. Thanks,  Chris Slocombe 01342 321 321

KJ reports that all that the CRS has are on site but can anybody else help with regard to this request please. Would Chris like to contact KJ by e-mail please.

It is always very pleasing to receive old photographs and thank heavens they have survived - here are three more from John Thorn.                 Many thanks John.
Picture
Firstly here is Axbridge station closed 9th Sept 1963 this picture taken in the Autumn of 1964. This was before this route became the A371 Abxridge by-pass. The stations still survives alongside the road - the box has of course gone. Note that although the line is obviously disused it would appear that a signal and indeed the nameboard on the signalbox have survived approximately a year. Copyright John Thorn
Picture
Here is Wrington station located on the Blagdon branch - seen here in 1961 some thirty years after closure of the station to passengers. The branch, a spur off the Cheddar Valley line from a junction at Congresbury, remained open for deliveries of coal to the pumping engines at Blagdon until 1963. Copyright John Thorn.
Picture
Wells Priory Road as seen in 1963. this station closed to passengers on the 29th October 1951 and to goods on the 13th July 1964 The junction ahead was the divergence to Glastonbury left and to Wells Tucker Street and Yatton right. Copyright John Thorn

16/8/2015

Hi Keith
A day of fab sun between the high cloud held good for (for a change) at Carlyon Bay for 57602 drifting by with 5P70 empties to Par. A nice mixture of liveries again!
Cheers for now,
