CRS Outdoor Events.  Visits to Bere Ferrers and Yelverton       30th August 2014

31/8/2014

This outdoor event, organised expertly, as usual by Roger Winnen, was held in ideal weather. The party grew as participants joined our up train, the 08.39 off Penzance, at various stations in Cornwall. At Plymouth we changed onto 10.59 service to Gunnislake which we left at Bere Ferrers, the home of the Tamar Belle, where there is a most interesting collection of coaches and relics.
Chris Groves greeted the party and straight away took a ride on the made up train of miscellaneous stock and propelled by a Hunslett Diesel locomotives.  The ride is a little on the short side being about sixty yards. Several runs were undertaken with members being able to ride aboard the various vehicles including a engine ride.
Following this several members walked to the end of the line in the former goods yard where a point enables access to two short sidings. In one of the sidings lay a trolley which supported an amazing number for a photo shoot.
A very enjoyable 'finger lunch' followed being taken in either of two restaurant vehicles, we were very well provided for. Pinhoe signalbox has been rebuilt on the surviving platform at Bere Ferrers where it has been externally renamed Beer Ferris. Th signalbox internally is still Pinhoe complete with track diagram and Chris has expertly wired it up to a simulator which enables one to operate the box just as it did prior to its removal. More details of this fascinating location will be provided at a later date.

The second part of our superb day out was to Yelverton where we visited the station and entered the tunnel.  This site is strictly private and is dedicated as a Nature Reserve. Permission for our visit was given by Lady Elizabeth Kitson the owner of the estate in which the former station lies.  We were indeed honoured to be conducted around the station by Lady Kitson, who gave us a detailed tour with many details of the flowers and fauna in addition to the railway features.  Our tour lasted well over an hour.

Long siding, that is the one alongside the sea wall walk with a buffer stop at the east end,  and  which was relatively recently been shortened disappeared overnight.  Whether it will be renewed is not known at this moment.

Truro, Falmouth, Tall Ships & Perranwell problems                                                                                         Craig Munday

31/8/2014

Hi Keith  A visit to Falmouth to see some water based vessels, also produced a few pleasant train opportunities too!
I rarely take photos at Truro, I find the light poor most of the time, and the trains are "hemmed in" by the overall roofs. 43079 looks rather nice on the rear of a set with a Penzance - London service.
Prior to this, FGW Driver Lee Macdonald looked from his power car door whilst his Paddington to Penzance train was at Truro. I managed to catch the up service between the signals too.
Finally, with all the careful preparations for the Tall Ships event, the Saturday evening service was disrupted with a set problem at Perranwell. The brakes jammed on, and the set eventually limped to Truro, leaving the one 3 car set to soldier on the branch service with an hourly frequency. Full credit to the FGW team at Falmouth for keeping everyone informed, and getting road transport sorted so promptly. 153370 leads a class 150/2 the one working train into Falmouth around 8.15 on Saturday 30th. The point work in the foreground is planned to be removed at some point, so was also worth a picture.  Kind regards Craig                                                         Many thanks Craig.

You'd better be quick!                                            John Ball

31/8/2014

With most trains, and virtually all branch trains, not having openable windows, it is hard to take a quick snap out of the window.  A place like Goonbarrow Jct signalbox is therefore 'out of bounds' to the non-trespassing photographer unless he or she is a railway worker.  Except ...  on Saturdays until 6 September there are some crossings there between HSTs and other HSTs or Voyagers, and on Sunday afternoon until 7 September a FGW HST leaves Newquay at 16.21 and crosses the 16.38 Par - Newquay Sprinter dmu at Goonbarrow Jct.                            Thanks John

Hastle with the Log Train - a quartet from   Craig Munday

29/8/2014

Hi Keith  It's not often I get a day free to see the Log train in Devon. The train was booked to run, 56113 was at Newton Abbot, and there was a promise of sun too. I joined Mr Duff at Newton Abbot and saw the Drivers arrive. The loco was started, prepped and shut down again. The fuel lorry hadn't been ordered to fuel the loco!
So a trip to the FGW depot at Exeter was hastily arranged which was photographed at Shaldon & Dawlish. The train eventually departed around 6pm, far too long for me to hang around, plus the light was all wrong by then anyway.
The loco passed the containers still in situ at the washout site, and this portion of the seawall is still closed to walkers at the moment.
Cheers for now  Craig                      Many thanks Craig

Newton Abbot this morning 29th August 2014  Martin Duff

29/8/2014

Morning Keith, With South Devon House undergoing maintenance, Colas RF 56113 waits in the old motor rail bay at Newton Abbot this morning. The loco arrived yesterday after working the infrequent 6V54 Chirk - Teigngrace. It is due to leave on 6M51 08.56 back to Chirk this morning. I will shortly be joined by Craig Munday, so potentially expect a gallery of photographs from us later! Cheers for now, Martin.  What do I say (KJ) , but the more the merrier, many thanks to you both.  Now, come to think of it I have more from Craig to add right now so better get on with it!
