Questions and answers                                Toy Hill

30/8/2013

Tony Hill advises that :- Contact has been made with former SR & BR WR Railwayman & at one time a Controller at Exeter Central Leo Dolling who advises that  all WC & BB locos were originally fitted with the water jets along the rearward cab roof, to keep the coal damp to prevent dust and the sprayer operated when the injector was on.
With many thanks to Tony Hill and of courses Leo Dolling.  How nice to have an answer from a former professional expert.

Good Morning Keith,
You might already know but  Jean has just read page 19 of todays  Western Morning News which tells of the major 12 part series starting on  Channel 5 tomorrow night about the First Great Western.
It is starting in Penzance etc I thought this would be of great interest to members.
Many thanks for the info Roger

Winnen's Wanderings                                     Roger Winnen

27/8/2013

After a hectic day on the Falmouth branch it was a surprise to learn, at 07.30 the next day , that our roving reporter Roger Winnen was on the move again - up to the South Devon for the day. I was expecting pictures of many trains and engines, but no, he went on to take a look at Ashburton in 2013, the former terminus of what is now the South Devon Railway.  So here are his pictures of yesterday. (Sent in at 22.37 last night!!).  Many thanks for your look around Ashburton Roger.      However, this morning more pictures came in of the ex LT tank on the branch - very interesting. Again many thanks.

Outside the station lies a Public House - this was renamed 'The Silent Whistle' on closure of the line. Seen here on 26th August 2013 - if only it could be renamed once more - back to its original name - with trains of course. Wishful thinking i'm afraid. Copyright Roger Winnen

This must, without doubt, be the least photographed station, or rather stopping place on the South Devon Railway. One is past it in a flash! The low level platform here is only used when services are provided by an auto coach fitted with drop down steps. 26th August 2013 Copyright Roger Winnen

Can anybody help out please?

23/8/2013

This coming Sunday in connection with the Maritime LIne celebrations an HST will be venturing along the Falmouth branch.
This is a most unusual event, in fact, only the second time such a train has traversed the line.  The train has to run before the first scheduled train of the day and the timings are thus on the early side.  This web site would be extremely pleased to receive any pictures taken of this train - so please, if you do see it lineside and are willing to have your pictures on the web please let us see them as soon as possible. You will be credited with the pictures selected - they will also be marked copyright.
