A mystery shunter
Steve Widdowson

Can anyone shine any light on this loco. It has a plate on 5200. Don't think it is there anymore.  It was in a field somewhere around Padstow & St Agnes.  I remember it was there for years but only took this attached picture on 31.07.1994.

All information will be most welcome.  Is it still around today ?

Thanks Steve. This shunter would appear to be that which is outside the former St. Agnes station. It's still in place, as shown in the below photo from Dennis Clarke last October.

The shunter came from Devonport Dockyard, but before being 'stuffed and mounted' at St. Agnes, it was part of a failed preservation site at Lanteague on the former Newquay - Chacewater branch between Goonhavern and Sheperds.

Further info from Paul Burkhalter

Good morning,

To add to the comments; This loco’s career in Devonport Dockyard came to an end on 4 June 1982 when a runaway wagon crashed into it in the Exchange Sidings. The loco was written off as a result.

Cheers,
Paul Burkhalter
Many thanks for that, Paul.

Bodmin Diesels
Chris Bellett

A bit slow off the blocks today but attached are some photos for the website if you wish. Saturday 19 July, was a non-public running day at Bodmin with a Drivers Experience Course using the Class 47 and some competency training for the Class 121 'Bubble Car' drivers. In the afternoon the CDA wagons were taken out for a few trips.

Re: Class 175's To Newquay
Karl Hewlett

Regarding Neil Phillip's message about the use of class 175's to Newquay and The Mid Cornwall Metro system, the answer to his question is the Metros will be diagrammed for class 150/2's unless anything goes wrong with one.

The potential use of 175 on the Newquay branch, 'if' they were to go there, would be on other services.  A hypothetical example is from Plymouth and return, this is made easier here as Laira crew currently being trained on them also have route knowledge to Newquay from working run-to-the-sun GWR diagrams.  Granted it would become tighter to run additional services after the introduction of the Metro as well, not forgetting that 'DB Cargo' will also need paths to Goonbarrow, but the loop now in place is manageable.

My response was to a previous message posted 'would we eventually see 175 on Cornish branchlines', well the answer to that is what I said, highly unlikely but not impossible.  Station dwell time is a key issue with end door units, a reason why class 158's are not common on branch diagrams.  An example, the Falmouth branch, where you have at least four stops in quick succession, a lot of people will train/detrain at these.  With services running on tight timings, central door units such as 150 are preferred because people can get on and off quickly without biting into the schedule too much and, would incur less penalty fines TOC's get for late running.

You will eventually see less class 150's on the mainline diagrams and displaced to branchlines with the arrival of class 175 and 158 migrating south, but nothing is set in stone yet except the Exeter to Penzance diagrams.

Re: Class 175 Future Useage
Neil Phillips

I read Karl Hewlett's article on the likely usage of the Class175 units in the South West, and noted that Par - Newquay would be the only Cornish branch to see them. My question is, how would this work in conjunction with the Mid-Cornwall Metro project?
A good and valid question, Neil - not sure - perhaps somebody can let us know?

Bodmin Diesels with BR
Steve Clark

When I was out on Saturday photting 47306, I commented to Mark Lynam that I could not recall seeing 47306 whilst it was in service. Well, clearly I did as here is the evidence, with 'The Sapper' stabled on Saltley Depot.

Even more remarkable was the fact that earlier the same day I also saw 37142 in Dutch livery at Bescot. Both Locos now being preserved at the Bodmin Railway!

Class 175's - the future
Karl Hewlett

Regarding the future use of the class 175's in Devon and Cornwall, I have it on good authority that their diagrams are Exeter to Penzance replacing mini HST's and branches to Barnstable, Okehampton and also Newquay.  It is not impossible, but highly unlikely, that they will go anywhere else, because the branches listed should then free up at least one class 150/2 for somewhere else. You will see more of the class 158's GWR already has, and some of the class 165 Turbos might be heading north for diagrams out of Bristol.

The reason why you won't see class 175's on branches such as St. Ives, Falmouth, Exmouth and Paignton (the latter which surprised me when I spoke to my contact), is because of the stop/starting (station dwell times). As the doors are located at each end instead of in the middle, such as the class 150/2, it takes longer to on/offload passengers.

The sets will be a mixture of two and three car units with the potential to make up four and five coach sets.
Many thanks, Karl

Bodmin Parkway
Andrew & Diane Jones

Dear Keith, Jon and Roger, please find attached photograph of 43098 at Bodmin Road, on the down 14.27 to Penzance, Thursday 17th July 2025.

I was picking up by grand daughter from her graduation at Bristol.

I hadn't realised that this journey now requires a change at Plymouth  with very few direct connections to the city.

Cross Country mainly operates from Plymouth and the ramifications of this means that Cornish passengers travelling north are often disrupted by cancellation and breakdowns.

Indeed the previous workings had been affected by signalling faults and damage to track requiring inspection.

Competition from motor coach services and Newquays heavily subsidised Airport, are  now becoming a serious contender given the fact they offer a booked seat and don't allow standing! something the railways struggle with when connections are missed and strangely seems acceptable in an era of safety litigation.

Anyway at least I managed a photograph of one of the last GWR covered footbridges in the region with a comfortable hst making slight amends to my grand daughters eventful journey for all the wrong reasons.

I'm really not grumpy or awkward ( although you might ask Diane for her opinion), but just old enough to remember when life was much easier!

Very best wishes Andrew and Diane

NINETEEN SIXTY FOUR – PART 54
Day Trip to London 17 July 1964
Michael L. Roach

The A303 was created on 1 April 1933 as the alternative London to Exeter route effectively an 85-mile bypass to the A30 through Hampshire, Wiltshire and Somerset. The A303 became a trunk road in 1958. In fact the A303 rejoined the A30 six miles east of Honiton, and still does – two roads into one. On the eastern outskirts of Honiton the A35 along the South Coast joined the A30 at the bottom of a steep hill – three roads into one. In 1964 the trunk road traffic still passed down the high street of the small town of Honiton and the traffic jams were horrendous and legendary as nose-to-tail traffic crawled through the town centre at low speed. In the Spring of 1964 the Ministry of Transport advertised the Invitation to Tender for construction of the Honiton Bypass – just 2¼ miles of dual carriageway which would take the A30 around the north side of the town. It did little for the A35 traffic which would now come down that steep hill and queue to turn east to access the bypass; but the bypass was a life-saver for the town of Honiton which became a pleasant place for travellers to stop and take a break, and it still is.

The firm that won the construction contract was Turriff Construction. I answered their advert for staff to work on the construction of the bypass; applied for the post of Junior Site Engineer and was lucky enough to get an interview in London. I travelled to London on Friday 17 July 1964 going up on the 8.30am Plymouth to Paddington arriving at 1.16pm just one minute late. The Turriff headquarters were in a new building facing onto the Great West Road at Brentford. How I travelled the seven miles from Paddington to Brentford is forgotten as it is not the easiest place to get to and would have taken about an hour. It was an impressive building 12 stories high and would have held hundreds of staff. I left after the interview with my expenses paid in cash; the main item would have been my train fare which was £5.40 for an ordinary return. I returned to Paddington station to catch the 6.30pm home to Plymouth. Both trains to and from London were Western-hauled; with the 6.30pm consisting of 15 coaches to Newton Abbot where 5 were detached for Paignton.

During the hour or so I was at Paddington at teatime I saw and photographed just two steam engines both on ECS workings. 6117 was seen leaving light engine after the train it brought in had departed. 6117 was then based at Southall Shed and was withdrawn there 14 months later. At 17.44 pannier 9405 brought in ten empty coaches for the 18.08 Fridays Only to Wolverhampton Low Level, which ran non-stop to Birmingham Snow Hill due 20.06. The 18.08 departed just two minutes ahead of the 18.10 to Birkenhead Woodside – first stop Banbury. This was the last time that I saw steam engines at Paddington. On the way home that evening just one steam engine was seen. At Tiverton Junction 0-4-2 tank 1450 with one auto-coach was providing the connecting train to Tiverton at 21.28

A couple of days later I received a letter from Turriff offering me a job on the Honiton Bypass Contract. I did not accept the offer for reasons now forgotten and stayed with my existing employer for another nine months before going to work for a different contractor. Turriff started work that Autumn and constructed the bypass over two years with the road opening to traffic in December 1966 at a cost of about £1,000,000. What has happened since to the roads in the area since 1966 ? The A30 dual carriageway has been extended westwards to Exeter. To the east of Honiton very little has been done to the A30 for many miles and the A35 still approaches Honiton down a steep hill with the need to turn right to get onto the bypass.

What happened to Turriff Construction ? Like many medium and large civil engineering contractors of the postwar period the firm is no longer in business having closed down in 1992. The firm was named after the surname of the founders and not the name of  the small town of Turriff in Aberdeenshire. Seven years later I applied for another job on a road contract, but this time on the other side of the fence, on the resident engineer's staff. The contract was for widening and straightening several miles of the A470 through the woods to the north of Dolgellau, which was then in Merionethshire. The A470 is a trunk road 186 miles long (the longest in Wales) linking Cardiff and Llandudno. The scheme had been designed by the Merionethshire County Council, which was abolished on 1 April 1974. Interviews were held at County Hall in Dolgellau which was just north of the town in an elevated position overlooking the town and the railway station. Unfortunately the railway had closed in 1965 and the station was derelict. The nearest railway station is ten miles away at Barmouth, so we decided to drive the 250 miles from Plymouth to Dolgellau for the interview, which was at about 2.00pm on Tuesday 24 August 1971. We would have to spend at least one night in an hotel so opted to leave after lunch on Monday 23 August and stay overnight at Chepstow in both directions. Motoring north from Chepstow to Dolgellau on the Tuesday morning we passed a steam roller in action on another section of the A470 being improved at the Vulcan Arms, Doldowlod. The Vulcan Arms was then a pub but is now a service area. We stopped here that evening on the way back to Chepstow and photographed the roller which was Aveling 10-ton no. 11208 dating from May 1925 and then belonging to Radnor County Council, registration EP3339. It was the very last time that I saw a steam roller in real commercial use. The engine survived into preservation and was last heard of at Kington, Herefordshire. Reverting to the north-bound journey, at Llangurig we had a choice of two routes and opted to head westwards via the A44 to Aberystwyth and then Machynlleth. This enabled me to stop at Devils Bridge and watch the first train of the day arrive at the narrow gauge terminus behind no.8 Llywelyn at 11.07am.

I arrived at Dolgellau in good time for the interview and was led into a large room overlooking the town. It contained an enormous table about 8 – 10 metres long. I was the only one sat on one long side looking out the window at the mountains in the background. There were one or two people at each narrow end and the other long side was full of people, comprising the whole of the Highways Committee plus the County Surveyor and one or two of his assistants; about 20 people in all. Frightening, but I have to say they were very kind and considerate. I explained that if successful I would be buying a house in the area. However this was a time of rapid house inflation, gazumping and houses being sold within 24 to 48 hours of going on the market. The Committee knew of the housing problems in the area and suggested we walk down into the town and visit the estate agents to see what was available, come back and let them know how we got on. We walked down to the town looking over the bridge at the derelict railway station on the way. There were three estate agents in the town; two did not have a single house for sale on their books; and the third had one house which had been on the market for several months. It was nine miles away at Fairbourne which is an area of sand dunes. The house had settled and been strapped up with steel bands which was the reason for everyone, including me, saying no thank you. We returned to County Hall and explained the impossible housing situation and we parted amicably with my expenses being paid. Just a  few weeks later I was offered, and accepted, a position with the Camborne-Redruth UDC which was also abolished on 1 April 1974; and that is how I came to live in Cornwall where I have now lived for more than 53 years.

A mystery location
Can you help?
David Cook

I wonder if via the C.R.S website any of your members could help me with identifying the location of the attached photograph of 4566 which I hold in the archive.

Sadly, there is no photographers name (possibly from the S.J.Rhodes collection), no date or location. However, I am determined to try to at least identify where this photograph was taken.

Whilst 4566 did not arrive at Penzance until November 1946 and after a period spent in the shops there I know she was shown as being shedded there as from 12.1.47.

From looking at the few 4566 GWR era photographs I have so far discovered I can date this from between September 1932 and mid- January 1951 (when she went to Caerphilly Works for a heavy Intermediate repair). It was here that I am certain she gained her first BR livery (black).

This still spans almost 20 years and during this period she was shedded at the following: Swindon, Westbury/Frome, Yeovil, Bath Road, Andover Junction, Chippenham, Yatton, Wells & Penzance.

I think that none of the smaller sheds/stations would necessarily have such a large timber building as the one seen in the background but you never know!

Could you please put this email and photograph on the C.R.S. website in the hope that someone might be able to help solve this mystery. If anyone knows who the photographer was or if this photograph is from a collection please let me know as I will need to amend the captioning in the archive. Currently, it is shown as unknown.

The first '175' to Cornwall
Mark Lynam & Clive Smith

The below text is from Clive:

175002 became the first of its class to enter Cornwall today, 15.07.2025. The first visit was just to Saltash at 10.19. After returning to Plymouth, 175002 made a second visit, this time as far as Liskeard. My photos are of the third outing of the day with the 5Z25 13.19 Plymouth - Liskeard seen at Saltash, and the 5Z26 13.51 Liskeard - Laira ECS at St Germans.

Most of the trips involved station stops with various orange jacketed staff using instruments to measure gaps at the platform from the trains and steps, as well as disabled ramps.

No doubt these DMUs will be around for a while in Devon and Cornwall and if they retain their liveries will provide some colour on the railway.

Penzance, Falmouth, Exeter, Okehampton and Barnstaple trials will no doubt follow soon.

A few photographs from our trip to the South Devon Railway today (15.07).

The Flying Scotsman
At the West Somerset Railway

Today 13/07/25 I went on the rearranged Flying Scotsman. It was cancelled on Friday due to operational issues at the WSR. Here is 60103 and returning engine D6656. A wonderful day.

Unusual Combination
On The South Devon Railway
Clive Smith

Picture
The previous day the South Devon Railway had a steam only working but the Sunday saw the GWR 0-6-0 pannier 1369 assisted by resident rat 25262 though the 25 was doing most of the work with the odd whistle, clank and chuff from 1369. I expect the customers who had paid for the Sunday Lunch train would have been somewhat disappointed with just a 'box on wheels' on the front of their train. Presumably the SDR are reviewing the running of steam due to the dry conditions nationwide though rain is forecast for Devon this week. The pair are seen at Buckfastleigh on the 10.30 Buckfastleigh - Totnes. 13.07.2025, copyright Clive Smith.
Picture
The unlikely pair are seen at Totnes on the 11.20 Totnes Littlehempston - Buckfastleigh. The two locos ran round separately at Totnes with 1369 taking on water there as the water tank at Buckfastleigh has been malfunctioning. 13.07.2025, copyright Clive Smith.
Many thanks, Clive - the dry weather certainly brings its advantages to diesel enthusiasts in particular!

47306 Running Day
Steve Clark

Picture
Another Diesel day at Bodmin and another day that I was working, although the job I had meant that I could get out and see the majority of the trains. The heatwave finally arrived in Cornwall on Thursday after a few days of heavy cloud and Saturday was cloudless skies all day. 47306 'The Sapper' was given a run out and the RFD liveried Class 47 is seen about to pass under the A38 having just departed from Colesloggett Halt on the 10.30 departure from Bodmin General Since I have been in Cornwall these are my first sunny shots of 47306 at the 4th attempt!!! What a splendid sight on the sea wall as 40013 rounds the corner into Teignmouth station with Saphos Trains 1Z29 06.15 Three Bridges - Kingswear with green 47805 on the rear. The booked steam loco had been replaced by the green D213 which was sent from Crewe to Taunton light the previous day. I'm not sure whether there is a steam ban on due to the dry lineside conditions and concerns about train driver health in the 30C, or whether the derailment at Bishops Lydeard on the WSR on Thursday affected preparation for the steam loco that regularly operates these tours from Taunton throughout the summer. 12.07.2025, copyright Clive Smith.

'Down by the river'
At the South Devon Railway
Jon Hird & Clive Smith

Picture
With thanks to Clive for the tip-off, I swung in to Dartington to see the SDR class 25 working a train, before heading off to photograph the '40'. However, all was not as it seemed, as instead of a diesel horn, a whistle was heard approaching, and from behind the trees emerged 0-6-0 1369 with an unadvertised service from Totnes - Buckfastleigh. 12.07.2025, copyright Jon Hird.
Picture
After a little wait (spent paddling in the river whilst the children captured young eels!) 25262 heads the delayed 1545 Buckfastleigh - Totnes past Dartington. 12.07.2025, copyright Jon Hird.
Picture
25262 works a late afternoon train from Totnes to Buckfastleigh on the South Devon Railway. I'd been tipped off the resident rat was working four trips Saturday and Sunday so thought I'd go for the River Dart reflection shot. With it being baking hot and 28C again there were quite a lot of sunbathers on the river bank and also a large amount of paddleboarders which can provide additional focal points and enhance the picture whilst at the same time causing ripples and ruining the pristine reflection. 12.07.2025, copyright Clive Smith.
Many thanks Clive, both for the photo and for the tip-off!
