Three Rivers Scenic Cruise - 23rd July 1994
By Roger Winnen
Part 5

Before we begin..

A tribute to The Late John Binding - Keith Jenkin

The CRS inspiration to follow the original GWR route between Wearde and St Germans as best possible by boat comes from reading and very much enjoying the Late John Bindings book ‘Brunels Cornish Viaducts’ which is a Pendragon publication from the Atlantic Transport Publishers in association with the Historical Model Railway Society. Published in 1993 this extensive collection of photographs and engineering drawings cover the construction and history and history of the GWR main line from Plymouth to Penzance and include the Falmouth branch.

This highly recommended book is still available from several sources at reasonable prices. Try Google as a source.

On the day of our adventure I distinctly remember joining to boat at Calstock and being asked by the ‘Captain’ “Well, where do you want to go?" – I explained our plan to travel down the Tamar to its junction with the Lynher and then to follow as best possible the railway route up to St Germans. At the junction with the Tavy our ‘Captain’ was unsure about whether the depth of water was sufficient to allow the boat through or for that matter whether the boats mast would pass under the bridge deck. Unfortunately we didn’t see a Gunnislake train – perhaps the service was running late.

It was a very pleasant day weather wise and we were delighted to make it to just under the viaduct at St Germans, as we turned, the boats propellers turned up a fair amount of mud – we just made it!

Having reached that extremity we made as great a speed as possible on the falling tide and with great relief passed the extensive Devonport ship yards we docked at the Barbican.

It would prove useful if you have a copy of John Bindings to hand.

Many thanks to Roger for providing the many pictures.

Furness Railway No 20 at the West Somerset Railway
Trevor Tremethick

Good evening Keith and Roger.

Hope all is well down there in God's Country.

Today, Barbara and I went to Minehead for the final day of the West Somerset Railway 150th Anniversary Event, marking the opening of the line between Watchet and Minehead. The weather was not kind.

Our main reason for going was to meet up with our friend Ben, who is part of the team looking after Furness Railway No. 20 of 1863, said to be Britain's oldest working standard gauge steam locomotive. This was one of two visiting locomotives, the other being Marston, Thompson and Evershed No.3, a former brewery locomotive.

The afternoon saw the arrival of an RTC Charter headed by Class 5 44871, 23 late owing to problems in the London area.

The English Riviera Express
Sat. 20.07.2024

Guy Vincent

Two photos taken at Penleigh Park footpath crossing on the Westbury avoiding line this morning, Saturday 20th July.

47712 'Lady Diana Spencer' heading Saphos Trains 1Z60 0529 Bedford - Kingswear 'The English Riviera Express' with loco 57311 bringing up the rear.  At Taunton 47712 was removed and replaced by LNER A4 Pacific 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley'.  The photos were somewhat spoiled by flying feathers from an unfortunate pigeon that was struck as the train approached the foot crossing.  The coaching stock was, as usual for Saphos, immaculately turned out and consisted of vehicles 35451 3330 3140 3107 1863 3125 3148 3100 80044 3122 3045 and 17013.

Note: A second tour arrived at Westbury station a short time later, photos to shortly follow.

Regards

The West Somerset Steam Express
Sat. 20.07.2024
Guy Vincent

The second tour to pass through the Westbury area today was the Railway Touring Company's 'West Somerset Steam Express', 1Z25 0713 Paddington - Minehead, which arrived on the down reception line (adjacent to disused platform 1) at 0938.  Here, LMS 44871's tender was refilled with water from a waiting road tanker in the station approach road.  Diesel 47812 was at the rear and the all-maroon coaching stock consisted of vehicles 35508 3392 3352 1961 3326 3431 3395 6724 6115 & 9493.

Again my regards

Early doors at Camborne
Dennis Clarke

Hi Keith, Roger, Jon,

Hope all OK.  I went to Camborne early this morning (19.07.2024) and got a couple of pictures of 57312, on hire to GWR, on the rear of the overnight sleeper from Paddington.

There has been a few issues with the 57s lately and I assume 57312 has been hired in to alleviate this problem,

Regards,
Dennis

Many thanks Alan - it's been wonderful to see so many photographs of the Newquay 'Castle' trips, we've had a photo from almost every vantage point on the branch.

Blue unit to Newquay
Jon Hird

Picture
A quick shot of blue GWR unit 150238 on the Newquay shuttles, 17.07.2024. I would echo Alans comments above about the overgrowth, this was the only spot along this section of line I could find long enough to fit just a 2-coach train, even with an additional 30m of height. A far cry from the days 15-20 years ago when you could simply stand on the path and photograph the trains going by. Copyright Jon Hird.

Digby & Sowton - Monday 15th July 2024
David Tozer

Gents,

Reports of a possible use by GWR of a SWR Class 159 159014 working the 1151 Exeter to Exmouth. A hasty trip to Digby & Sowton only to find the train had been cancelled. However I did get a photo of GWR’s only true three car Class 158 158798 which was working the 1123 from Exmouth to Paignton.

Like other locations on or railway network vegetation is encroaching near the operating line. On my latest trip on the Exmouth Branch it felt like in places that we were travelling through a jungle. Recently I saw a video on You Tube that showed the Vale of Rheidol Railway has a rail mounted flail. Something our national network could learn from.

An update on the Severn Tunnel
Alan Peters

Picture
The Severn Tunnel has been closed from 3rd July until 19th July 2024 for engineering work where the whole length of the 4.3 miles of track on the Down line inside the tunnel has been renewed, this mammoth task has seen over 40 engineering trains from Colas Rail, DB, Freightliner and GBRf, enter the tunnel from the English side and depart via the Welsh side reversing at East Usk and returning via Gloucester, one such train was 6F36 from Westbury with 70805 and train of 'Falcon' ballast wagons pictured inside the tunnel on the Up line on 14th July 2024. Copyright Driver Alan Peters.
Many thanks to you Alan, there surely cannot be many photographs of trains within the tunnel itself! Not a worksite for the claustrophobic amongst us.

NINETEEN SIXTY TWO – PART 95
Didcot Open Day 2 May 1970

Michael L. Roach

On 2 December 1967 I travelled on the special train which transferred the Great Western Society's stock from Totnes to its new base at the former Didcot steam shed. Our journey ended at Didcot Station from which we found our own way home.

It would be another two and a half years before I got to a Didcot Open Day, on Saturday 2 May 1970 on my way home to Plymouth from London. I had travelled up to London by train on Thursday 30 April to undertake a professional interview on the Friday. Some weeks later I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I had passed, despite thinking that I had not done particularly well.

The events of the Friday and Saturday made for a memorable weekend. The Great Western Society held its first open day at Didcot in 1969 and in 1970 the site was still in its infancy, but in the intervening 54 years has gone from strength to strength.

Hello Roger, I see you have had another trip up the County but to a poignant occasion.
I have many of Maurice Dart’s books and they survive my occasional pruning of my collection.

Many Thanks to you both Roger

Exminster HST - More Details
Roger Geach/Martin Duff

On Saturday, we showed a picture of Roger Geach's, featuring a Virgin HST at Exminster. Roger wrote that he hadn't recorded any details of the service, however Martin has emailed in with the following info;

Evening admins,

For “ Exminster, Gissons bridge, on the evening of 03.05.2002. A Virgin HST passes by. I have never had any interest in these things, so no notes on the working, I was waiting for a mail train. The light was good so i took the picture. Copyright Roger Geach.”

Most likely 1E40 17.10 Plymouth - Leeds

Cheers,

The Maurice Dart Memorial Train

Yesterday (13.07.2024), the Bodmin Railway kindly ran an out-of-hours round trip to Bodmin Parkway and back for friends of Maurice Dart.

Maurice's name is one which should be familiar to any rail enthusiast in the westcountry, he was a very well respected historian, photographer and author, and a hive of knowledge, particularly around the clay lines.

Maurice helped to arrange several excursions for the Cornwall Railway Society over the years, using his work connections with E.C.C. to gain access to sites of interest not usually accessible to the public.

He will be greatly missed.

Our grateful thanks to The Bodmin Railway for hosting this evening, as well as Roger Webster and Chris Groves (from Bere Ferrers), it certainly meant a lot to many people.

Well done also to our very own Roger Winnen who played a part in the organisation and promoting of the evening.

Thanks Roger - we're certainly glad you took the picture! I think many of us are guilty of shunning the HST's back when there were more interesting trains about, but what we'd all give for brightly coloured trains with an engine at both ends (rather than beneath the floor) nowadays!

Sleeper ECS
Jon Hird & David Tozer

After Wednesdays well-recorded issues with the sleeper (click here), it must have been a blow to GWR to experience further issues on Thursday. The loco for the 'up' working on Thursday evening - 57603 - had failed, meaning that instead, an IET worked the service to Paddington. The 'down' train still ran using sleeper stock, arriving into Cornwall as scheduled on Friday morning.

Of course, this meant that both sets of stock were here in the westcountry. 57602 was sent to take one set back to Reading, running as 5Z50.

NINETEEN SIXTY TWO – PART 94
Afternoon Visit to North Cornwall 04.08.1962
Michael L. Roach

On the afternoon of Saturday 4 August 1962 I made a circular car trip from Plymouth to Bodmin; then following the North Cornwall line as far as Otterham; before turning for home. A journey of about 75 miles lasting 6 hours. I saw just four trains hauled by three different classes of engine. Stops were made at Dunmere, Port Isaac Road and near Otterham, with just five photographs taken. The engine seen at Dunmere Halt is worthy of note because it was the 7000th engine built at Crewe Works; one of the 130 Ivatt 2-6-2 prairie tanks constructed 1946-52. The last of the class were withdrawn in 1967 but despite lasting almost to the end of steam only four of the class survive in preservation, but not 41272.  There are two views of “N” class moguls which were very common on the North Cornwall Line on both passenger and freight trains. Both engines were long-term residents of Exmouth Junction Shed. The last photo taken that day has been shown twice with the second version colourised by Richard Hoskin of Plymouth. There are more of Richard's expertly coloured images appearing on a Facebook page called The Withered Arm, which is well-worth joining (click here).

The single Bulleid Pacific seen that day was 34066 Spitfire – the engine involved in the Lewisham rail crash of December 1957 when 90 people died. The engine was also seen in Part 93 resting on Friary Shed 11 days earlier.
