Tremabe
Chris Harvey

Here is a shot from twenty one summers ago that you might be interested in. Under a lovely July sky, an unidentified 47, wearing GW "Merlin" livery, passes Tremabe on the edge of Dobwalls, with the 1140 Penzance - Paddington. The date is 10th July 1999.  This view isn't possible today, as the field in the foreground is now full of trees. Best Regards, Chris Harvey, Bodmin

Newton Abbot

A few shots of Peaks at Newton Abbot depot on the day of closure. It was the last summer Saturday of 1981 which was 27 September. Also a shot of the class 24 which was used as a carriage heating unit, I believe.
Also my piece of 46029 which I purchased some years ago.
Just wish I took more photos of the depot that day!
Kind regards,  Paul Barlow.

Ken writes :- I realise that this may seem a strange question, but here we go. I camped with a Leicester scouts group in the late 50s early 60s on a farm between Falmouth and Helston. And have for a number of years been trying to locate where it was. I can remember that the road we used to get to the farm ran along side of a railway for a short distance and that we had to cross the railway track to drive up to the field . Do any of your members have any idea were this crossing might have been or still is. Long shot I know!! Kind Regards Ken.  Can anybody help!!

A locos life History
Karl Hewlett
Dear Keith. Regarding email from Micheal Manning about class 03 D2177, here is its full service history: From Swindon Works In service 27/12/61 to 73F Ashford Chart Leacon shed. Reallocated 28/01/62 to 83H Plymouth Friary shed. Reallocated 11/08/62 to 83D Plymouth Laira shed. Reallocated 01/06/68 to 83B Taunton shed. Withdrawn 21/09/68 at 83B Taunton shed. Moved 29/10/68 to Worcester Shrub Hill shed. Moved between 4/05/69 and 29/06/69 to Birds Long Marston. Observed 26/07/69 intact at Birds Long Marston. Cut up 01/06/70 at Birds Long Marston. So as you can see it wasn't withdrawn from Worcester but Taunton shed and for being seen at Wadebridge in March 1968, it is quite likely as it was not transferred away until June and not withdrawn until September. There were quite a lot of loco's at Worcester awaiting their fate, class 03 and class 22 e.t.c. In fact it seems like a central dumping ground which for most was to the scrapman. In D2177's case a mere eight years of service, rather a waste of a good loco. There are memoirs that some of these loco's at Shrub Hill were actually serviceable and were used for shunting if one of theirs was out of action despite being officially withdrawn. Regards Karl (Friends Of Penmere Station).
Many thanks Karl for your very much in depth report on D2177. I'll forward it to Michael Manning.

Hi Keith, Over at Wick today, ( 2 miles west of Langport ) for the 1Z37 Peterborough to Paignton charter, with 47805 ( D1935 ) at the head. The train should have had 47501 on the back but it was declaired a failure at Peterborough and removed. About 14 hours seems a long time spent sat in a train for less than 4 hours at Paignton. Michael Manning's Query
Replies

Ever since you sent me that link from CRS ‘News’ I have been logging in most mornings to view mostly the photos. The article regarding the 03 Shunter No.D2177 was particularly informative. When Wards lifted the tracks on the NCR they had to hire a diesel loco for their demolition train as there’s had broken down and needed to be replaced. They hired an 03 from Laira and it was pictured by F.W.Crudass at Tressmere and Tower Hill but not identified. Neil Philips says it was ‘’seen at Padstow on track lifting duties on the North Cornwall line in March 1968’’. This ties in with the info I have up to a point. Which ever company lifted the Padstow to Wadebridge line probably wasn’t Wards as he usually liftted the complete rail sections using a crawler crane. This section was definitely not lifted this way. If he saw D2177 (possibly at Wadebridge) can he give me a little more info. Was it withdrawn in 1968 ? Another fly in the ointment is if you put D2177 into search you come up with www.miac.org.uk<http://www.miac.org.uk> that shows it to be allocated to Worcester in May 1960 and cut up at Birds Long Marston in April 1970. Was it moved from Laira to Worcester? Can you help. Regards, Mike
We have received two replies - many thanks to Shaun Brown and Neil Phillips.
From Shaun Brown - With reference to Michael Manning's request for information on Class 03 D2177 in Maurice Dart's excellent book Images of Cornish Railways there is a picture at the bottom of page 153 showing D2177 on a track lifting train near Padstow on 1st March 1968 and states that it was allocated to Laira at that time.
I also found a photograph by Mr Gordon Edgar on Twitter of D2177 in the scrap line at Bird's Commercial Motors Ltd scrapyard, Long Marston near Stratford-upon-Avon on 30th March 1970 which can be seen at https://www.flickr.com/photos/12a_kingmoor_klickr/6288905185/in/photostream/ . Hopefully this will be of some use to Mr Manning.

Kind regards, Shaun Brown.
From Neil Phillips - Regarding Michael Manning’s request for further information on the use of Class 03 D2177 on NCR demolition trains in March 1968, I found this reference in a modelling website discussion on diesels used on the NCR. A correspondent claimed to have access to a photo of D2177 near Padstow (not at Padstow, my correction) on 1/3/68. The Ian Allan Shed Book 1968 edition (the oldest one I have), WR correct to 28/7/67, lists D2176-8 allocated to Laira 84A. D2177 was withdrawn 9/68 from Worcester 85A, according to ‘Modern Locomotives Illustrated’ Issue No 217, but the reallocation date is unknown. D2177 was not the only Class 03 used on NCR demolition trains – The Transport Treasury, Alec Swain collection ref. W26/2-4 shows D2127 on such a train at Tresmeer on 27/7/67 (another photo ref. V66/5 shows the same loco heading a freight past St Blazey roundhouse with D840 in attendance on 4/4/67). Curiously the MLI has D2127 withdrawn 5/68 also from 85A, which if correct may indicate both shunters did no meaningful work at Worcester and were possibly only sent there for spares recovery to keep local 03s running, prior to going for scrap. Whilst it’s possible that D2127 and D2177 have become confused, both locomotives were in the South West at the time. As always, the above assumes that supplied information is correct - for example, the caption to the photo of D2127 at Dunmere in Bradford Barton’s album ‘Bodmin and Wadebridge 1834-1978’ may have correctly identified the train crew’s names but the loco is D2183! Best regards, Neil Phillips
Many thanks for your rime and trouble Shaun and Neil.
Angarrack Query
Steve Hall
Good evening, hopefully you may be able help. I live in what was a counting house, for the mines or railway I believe next to the present angarrack viaduct, the building dates from 1819 originally re brick construction with many windows to the first floor presumably office space. It was converted into 2 then one house over the years and I am trying to find photos of my home as an office building from as early as possible. So far all enquiries are a dead end and photos seem to be just to the left or right... Typical. I was hoping that you may have some construction photos or other records showing the viaduct from around the time it was built and possible with my home in the background. Any help would be appreciated Many thanks Steve Hall 5 Riverside Angarrack

A cluster of recent pictures dating back to the 9th July. I was just thinking we are nearly a month from the longest day, it's been poor sunlight and train interest wise since the 21st June. I cant recall such a long spell between any Charter trains visiting the South West. There is a Charter to Paignton this weekend coming, the first of 2020 I reckon. On 9th July 6Z60 is seen heading east near Polbathic, Trerulefoot with bright red 66175 doing little to illuminate a dull day. The loco is named after the children's railway club "Rail Riders". I was an original rail rider in the in 1980s when generator class 47 47406 was embellished with the same name. It visited Cornwall a couple of times, but was not a common visitor. On the 11th, 57603 with 57604 on the rear passes the crop fields west of Grampound Road with the sleeper empty stock bound for Long Rock. This daytime stock balancing diagram is not expected to run much longer. The 15th brought some unusual visitors to Plymouth in the shape of Loram class 20s 20007 and 20205. The pair are seen after dark in the old postal dock. They returned the next day after refuelling at Laira. Also on the 15th, I covered the afternoon shift at St Blazey. The evening presented some super sunshine. 66107 and 66015 were stabled with the weedsprayer train (MPV) and are pictured with 66118 working the clay empties up to Goonbarrow. 66160 is just visible on the JIAs in the distance. Four locos present - much welcomed. All the best for now Craig

A sad week
David Tozer
It has been a bad week. We have had three fatalities this week. No 1 Lympstone on the Exmouth branch. Earlier this week the first down Exmouth hit a body hanging from a crane I am told. No 2 The Hele & Bradninch fatality. GWR diverted two trains via Yeovil. No 3 Cogload Junction. Fatality involving a pair of Class 158’s. Four IEP’s diverted. The Wednesday incident saw a pair of 802’s held at Pinhoe. Ten car IEP’s cannot pass each other at Honiton as the loop is not long enough. An up Salisbury was 14 late off Exeter and was right time at a Pinhoe. Crazy timing by SWR. Dave
One feels very sorry for those who have to 'literally' pick up the pieces, whether it be the bodies, sort out the timetables or especially sadly for the drivers. Not forgetting of course the families involved.

Newton Abbot Works
Michael Roach

The South Devon Railway built the line from Exeter to Plymouth via Newton Abbot, and the first passenger train arrived at Newton Abbot on the last day of 1846. The passenger service was extended to Totnes in 1847 and Torquay in 1848. The SDR soon constructed a running shed and locomotive repair works at Newton Abbot which survived the takeover by the Great Western Railway and nationalisation, finally closing in 1970. In steam days the works would repair all sizes of loco except the King-class and from sheds all over the Western Region but it specialised in the smaller steam locos from West Country sheds. The works closed to steam in 1960 but was repurposed to maintain diesel locomotives for a few years.
The last steam locomotive to receive an overhaul at the works was small prairie tank number 4566 of Penzance Shed in June and July 1960. The loco left the works on Wednesday 15 July 1960 in a ceremony which was attended by local dignitaries and reported in the local press. Two weeks earlier on 3 July there were 6 locos in the works including 2 Castles. The choice of 4566 as the last loco to go through the works was a masterstroke because the loco had been sent new to Newton Abbot as its first shed in October 1924 immediately after construction. 4566 was transferred from Penzance to Laira Shed, Plymouth in October 1961 and withdrawn from there in April 1962. Sent to Woodham Brothers scrapyard at Barry the loco was saved for preservation on the Severn Railway Railway arriving there in August 1970. So this is a notable year for 4566 being 60 years since it left Newton Abbot Works and 50 years since it arrived on the Severn Valley Railway.
What of 4566 in the year 2020. The loco still resides on the Severn Valley Railway where she is stored in The Engine House at Highley awaiting an overhaul. 4566 was last steamed on 2 January 2017 when the loco made two return trips between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, and performed very well. Its a little over four years until 4566 celebrates its 100th birthday. Lets hope that the overhaul can be completed in time for this wonderful little locomotive to celebrate its centenary in steam and earning its living on passenger trains. I am obliged to David Cook of The 4566 Group, owners of the locomotive, for assistance in writing this article and for providing the photographs.
Another veteran of the steam era with strong connections to South Devon is the coal-fired paddle steamer Kingswear Castle built by Philip & Son on the banks of the River Dart. The ship is back where it belongs doing the pleasure trips it was designed for between Dartmouth and Totnes. The steamer entered service in 1924 and will also celebrate its 100th birthday in 4 years time.

A few days earlier Mike wrote -  Another anniversary coming up shortly, this time 60 years since Newton Abbot Works closed and the last steam loco departed. I remember it because my friend Charles Fennamore used to have the WMN sent to Southampton (where we both worked) by post and he was showing me the item in the newspaper just a couple of days after the ceremony.                    Regards Mike

Please find attached two photographs for use with Mike Roach's article about the 60th anniversary of the closure to steam of Newton Abbot works on the 15th July 1960. Both are from my collection but should be shown copyright: the late Peter W Gray/Transport Treasury whose permission to use them I have been granted.

I'm not sure if the first one with 6845 Paviland Grange is a before or after shot as it looks likely 4566 is not in steam! Whilst the classic ex-works photograph taken by Peter Gray (front three quarter view) has been seen many times I think the second one I have submitted with the crew posing is the better one but that is just my opinion!

Regards, David Cook (4566 Group)
Many thanks indeed to Mike Roach,a mine of information,  for the above  very detailed Anniversary Reminder and to his good friend David Cook for the stunning photographs of 4566 from his collection.
Note the buildings in the background of the top photograph are in Forde Close - you can still take a stroll courtesy of Google Earth Street view along there, but, my word how the view has changed!!
Taking a look inside
Marazion Station
Andrew Triggs

Morning Keith,  While out on Saturday 11th July 2020 photographing in the Marazion area, I was asked if I would like to look inside the former station building by the on site staff who were preparing the Holiday cottages for the season, naturally I was pleased to accept the invitation. Currently the building is being restored internally and not in use for Tourists, enclosed shots of the interior for CRS.
All the Best, Andrew

Millendreath Bench
Stephen Remington
Hello I’m hoping you can fill a gap in my knowledge. The plaque pictured below is fixed to a stone bench on the coast path east of Millendreath and on the way to Bay View Farm and the Monkey Sanctuary. Did the Metropolitan Railway have plans for a line along the coast there? If so, what happened?           Many thanks. Stephen Remington

Thanks for your query Stephen we know of a plan for a new railway from Menheniot to a 'high level' station at Looe - but will ask our expert for comment on this.

Hi, After seeing Ken Mumford's pictures of 37610 propelling 3Q64 from Swindon to Gloucester I thought I would send a picture of the test train arriving at Swindon before I worked the train back to Cardiff Canton, testing at a leisurely 30mph over the Golden Valley - Driver Alan Peters.

Ken catches a rare moment as 66137 takes its train on the short spur, the remains of the Highworth branch to the EMR scrapyard.

Using Google Earth and zooming into the 'street view' off the nearby road bridge will show you the extent of this still exising short line which closed to passengers on the 2nd March 1953 and to goods on the 6th August 1962.

A sequel to the
Falmouth Docks Railway
Karl Hewlett

Karl has very kindly written in with much more information concerning the history and disposal of the Falmouth Docks Railway. This will be added to the colouful presentation already provided on this site by Phil Boak (RN)  and Trevor Tremethick. Yet more interesting facts. To get to the original article by Phil  and Trevor please click here this will take you to 'Features July to December 2020'. You will need to scroll.
The first engines that ran on the docks system were two c1860 7ft 01/4inch gauge 0-4-0 vertical boiled tank loco's made by 'Sara & Burgess LTD' (a very little known builder from Falmouth 1857 to 1918), they are No 1 "Blackbird" and No 2 "Torbay", these two were joined by a third Sara & Burgess built loco second hand No 3 "Billy". These loco's were later converted to 4ft 81/2inch in line with the GWR's re-gauging of the west and were noted in the 'Iron Journal' as being converted to narrow on 15th January 1892. A fourth similar loco also constructed by Sara & Burgess was started in 1914, but not delivered until c1920 due to World War One and was unnamed. The loco's are believed to have carried on working at the docks complex until 1926 and 1930 for No 4, interestingly the boiler off No 4 was purchased by 'Falmouth Technical School' when scrapped but what has happened to it since I don't know. In need of some new loco's Falmouth Docks approached a fine maker of industrial locomotives (not in any way biased!), of 'Hawthorn Leslie' at their St. Peters works on the Northumberland banks of the River Tyne who built four loco's No 1 works number 3648, No 2 works number 3598, No 3 works number 3597 and No 4 works number 3670. No's 1 to 3 were completed between the first and the eighth months of 1926 and No 4 on the eleventh month of 1927. In March 1955 for reasons why this happened I don't know a bit of what the preservation world calls skulduggery happened between the identity of two loco's, No 3 became No 1 and No 1 became No 3! In October 1961 two more loco's were obtained second hand from 'Wholesale Society LTD's' margarine works at Higher Irlam in Lancashire, No 5 works number 1632 built by 'Hudswell Clarke' of Leeds in February 1929 and No 6 works number 1530 was built by 'Peckett' of Bristol in December 1919. All loco's were registered to work on BR metals at the transfer sidings next to Falmouth Docks station. The steam locos were gradually withdrawn over a period of time with No 1 and No 2 in August 1961, No 3 in August 1987, No 4 in May 1967, No 5 around 1978 and No 6 in December 1978. This was not the end however of loco's being based at the docks as in 1978 they acquired their first diesel loco built by 'Sentinel' of Shrewsbury, again of an 0-4-0 wheel arrangement works number 10129 and new in 1963 to 'British Steel' at their Skinningrove Works then in Cleveland now classed as North Yorkshire. The yellow livery and large black 129 numbers are from its days at Skinningrove and this loco soldiered on until 1995 when it too was withdrawn, although under a grey cloud as its 'Rolls Royce' power unit had only been rebuilt around six months before withdrawal. This loco was also registered to work on BR metals. Fortunately Nos 3, 5 and 6 have been preserved, No 129 was sold for scrap going to 'West Country Metals' in Redruth who later sold it to 'Henry Orchard' a scrap dealer at Methrose Works, Carne Cross, Par. Another twist of fate has happened again because Mr. Orchard liked No 129 so much he was quoted as saying he would not scrap it. I have tried to Google Earth and Street View the scrapyard, but I cannot get a good enough view to make out if it is still there? The loco was still in one piece in 1998 but after that it remains a mystery.
With regards to Falmouth Docks station its Brunel timber trainshed roof was at one point the largest single span roof of any building in Europe and as pointed out in the article was taken down in 1957.
Regards Karl (Friends Of Penmere Station).
Thank you, Karl, for the very valuable additional information you have provided.

Fatherford Viaduct
Paul Barlow

A couple of shots from 1985. Location is Fatherford viaduct near Okehampton

These photos would be impossible today even if there were were trains, as this view point has been completely ruined by the building of the A30 dual carriageway. The A30 now runs parallel with the viaduct probably about 50 yards between each other. There was a lot of controversy at the time as the road was to built on the National park, but it went ahead anyway.

The first shot is from the hill opposite the viaduct, the return working if stood in the same spot today you would be on the northbound carriageway of the A30.

Hope these are of interest  - Paul.

Good Evening Roger

I spent an hour at Camborne station in mid afternoon today to see how progress was being made with the Saturday timetable.
During my visit there were three Hitachi 9 car trains on Paddington services as well as the usual Castles and 158s. Nine car in the last few years have become regular in summer and one of them additional markings.
800321 running a 18 minutes late on the 1C74 9.02 from Paddington arrived at 14:10 and came back on the 1A94 14:45 from Penzance after a quick turnaround.
A couple of photos are shown with the new markings.

Non Stop Running on the Paignton & Dartmouth Rails
Roger Winnen
From 6th July 2020 The Paignton & Dartmouth Railway has introduced a service of six non stop trains a day running between Paignton and Kingswear and return, every day except Fridays.
Departures from Paignton   10.00  11.10   12.20  14.00  15.10  16.20
Departures from Kingswear 10.30  11.40   12.50  14.30  15.40  17.10
A number of hours were spent on the line today, however Goodrington Station and Churston Stations were locked up and a lineside fire resulted in the cancellation the 5th train of the day, passengers were then directed to the 120 bus service from Kingswear to Paignton which came to the rescue to carry the load.
