The Life and Times of Prairie 4540

4540 was the first of a batch of 15 of the 4500-class Prairie 2-6-2 tanks built at Swindon over the winter of 1914 – 15. They were numbered 4540 to 4554, and on completion of the batch no more would be built for more than nine years until the appearance of 4555 (reviewed in Part 41 of the series) in the autumn of 1924. No less than 10 of the 15 engines went straight to Newton Abbot engine shed; with the remaining five going to Laira (2) and one each to Bristol, Newport and St. Blazey. 4540 left Newton Abbot after a little over two years to move to Laira. Apart from six months at Taunton Shed 4540 spent the whole of its working life of 45 years at sheds in Devon and Cornwall including Exeter, Truro, St. Blazey and possibly Penzance. 4540 was withdrawn on 3 March 1959 with a mileage of 1.121 million. One of my books says that 4540 spent its last 20 years 1939 to 1959 at St. Blazey Shed; while another says that all the time after nationalisation on 1 January 1948 4540 was at Penzance Shed being at times out based at Helston or St. Ives Shed. This seems to be confirmed by a photograph in the Middleton Press book of the line showing 4540 leaving Helston Station with 3C in the mid-1950s. 4540 was sold to the Hayes scrapyard at Bridgend and cut up.

The attached scan of 4540 soon after being completed at Swindon was taken from a photograph published in the bound volume of the GWR Magazine for 1915. It was given prime position as page 1 and recorded as being a “supplement.” It was printed by specialist printers rather than the printers of the rest of the volume, making it special. The printers were Andrew Reid & Co. Ltd of 50 Grey Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne who were specialist lithographers, printers and publishers for more than one hundred years. The firm occupied a beautiful building in a prime position, and the building is still there in Grey Street, although the firm is no more.

One of the best-known of the batch of 15 engines was 4549 because it spent the first 22 years at sheds in Devon and Cornwall; then 23 years on the Cambrian system (mostly on the Cambrian Coast); finally returning to its roots in February 1960 just in time to work the last brake van railtour to Yealmpton on 27 February 1960. It was also one of the few of the class to retain inside steam pipes right up until withdrawal.

Bodmin Railway
Class 10 Running Day
Plus!
CDA Wagon movements

From The Bodmin Railway:

On Saturday 22.06.24, the Bodmin Railway will be using visiting D3489 Class 10 "Colonel Tomline" to haul their service set. This will be the first time that a Class 10 has hauled a service over the line for many years, since the railways own example was placed into storage pending overhaul.

D3489 is on-hire to the railway from The Helston Railway whilst Bodmin's own Class 08, 08444, is overhauled.

As with most of its classmates, D3489 had a relatively short BR career. In 1969 it was sold to the Felixstowe Dock and Railway Company where it worked until 2001.

There will be 5 departures following the timetable shown below.

Also, subject to the usual caveats, the recently preserved rake of 8 CDA wagons should be out for crew training purposes, hauled by either 47306 or 50042.

A rare opportunity to see/photograph these characterful wagons on the move behind some heritage traction!

'Project Ajax'

In a Cornish location, Gary Hardings has been working away restoring one of the cabs of 50046 'Ajax'. Jeremy went along for a visit and has provided us the below images of the fantastic work which has been carried out.

Today (15.06.2024) Steam Dreams ran a charter from Paddington-Kingswear and rtn, 61306 Mayflower Runs Taunton-Kingswear rtn segment, and is pictured at Longforth Wellington with 12 coaches and support diesel 47810 at rear, it was a great sound and sight. Copyright John Simons.

I've been quite enjoying trying to find new spots to photograph the down empty JIA's on a saturday morning recently. I always try to find a spot where I'm at least on the correct side for the sun, but having it on the nose of the train isn't easy with a west-bound train early in the morning. The sun didn't matter today anyway, as it went into hiding just before the train arrived at Tywardreath, the brakes applied slowing the train for journeys end at Par, just around the corner. 66101 with 6V74, 15.06.2024, copyright Jon Hird.

Spot the difference at Rewe

For those who cannot... The fleet names are doubled on one unit.

Also at Rewe, 802002 and 802010 with the 0710 Penzance to Paddington. Recently there appears to be more of these units in service with the nose cone open. I just wonder why this is happening so often. Copyright David Tozer.

Many thanks David. I would guess that with rolling stock being as thin on the ground as it currently is, the nosecone door fault isn't seen as a high priority issue? It is a surefire way to spoil the looks though!

Todays random shot of 6G09 is just west of Luxulyan. The short train of 6 JIA's heads for Fowey. In the distance to the left of the image, Helman Tor (near Bodmin) can be seen, and on the horizon is Killmar Tor and Bearah Tor, near The Cheesewring (Minions). If you're not familiar with Cornwall, that last sentence probably sounds like a load of foreign language! 12.06.2024, copyright Jon Hird.

With the sun still warm and bright, I decided to take a trip to Milltown after work to see the returning empties heading back to St. Blazey. I was a little surprised when the train appeared in my camera.. and kept coming! 6 JIA's had gone to Fowey, yet 9 had come back, some wagons must have spent the night there. They just about fit into this shot of the train crossing Milltown Viaduct at around 18:30. Copyright Jon Hird.

Can I just add that 47828 has featured a few times as it has been a regular visitor on railtours recently. Its noted as LSL owned, it’s on long term hire to LSL and we still own it as part of D05 Preservation Ltd along with 37688 which is also on loan to LSL. Sadly our other loco 46010 languishes at Barrow Hill.

Over 35 years earlier on 19.02.1989 Michael Adams captures class 37s working covered steel products. There was then a regular flow of coal. Iron ore and steel of all types,now very quiet on the freight front. Of interest is the hotel which has long since been demolished and replaced by The Clayton Hotel which is where I stayed ! Fresh out of the paintshop at Eastleigh works, ex Hanson liveried 59104 wearing a smart new coat of Freightliner orange and black next to P3 at Westbury. Photo taken during a 2 minute pause to reverse direction, running as 0Z59 0900 Eastleigh Arlington - Merehead Quarry today Tuesday 11th June 2024.

With 59101 in green Heidelberg colours and 59102 already in FL orange this leaves just 59103 in the outgoing and now rather shabby Hanson livery.

Owing to last weeks well-documented failure of 66130, 66025 has been sent to Cornwall to take its place. For the last couple of months we have had 66101 or 66130 solid on the clay trains.
