Conqueror departs Salisbury

Picture
Hello Roger, Interesting pictures of the Falmouth line on the site,we are lucky to receive them. Here is a shot of 50009 ‘Conqueror’ leaving Salisbury,on this day in 1989,with the 13.18 to London Waterloo. Sadly the loco. did not live up to it’s name and only lasted another 18 months before it was scrapped at Old Oak Common. Copyright Michael Forward
Many Thanks Michael
A surprising discovery
Neil Phillips

Hello Roger and Keith,

Ken Mumford’s visit to the Swindon & Cricklade Railway last Friday (photos posted on 18th June) threw up a real surprise with a Cornish connection stretching back 62 years. I refer to his photo of Permanent Way Brake Van 17907.

As is well-known in these parts, back in April 1961  the preserved GWR 4-4-0 No 3440 ‘City of Truro’ was involved in the launch of Westward Television – the South West's own ITV channel. Earlier this year I was looking into the make-up of the Exhibition Train, with a view to possibly creating a model of a shortened formation to go behind my Bachmann model of ‘City of Truro’, and found the following information:

From the locomotive back –
  • Three ex-GW/BR (WR) ‘Syphon G’ vehicles, diagram O33, W2769/2941/2983W, clad with smooth external sheeting – exhibition vehicles (W2983W preserved at the Glos-Warks Railway)
  • Ex-GW Nondescript Brake Saloon, diagram G58 W9103W – studio car (preserved at the Severn Valley Railway)
  • BR Mark 1 Restaurant Second Open (RSO) W1012 – theatre/reception coach (later converted into BR Cinema Coach DW150353, preserved at Ruddington but future currently uncertain)
  • And bringing up the rear, the power source for all the above - ex-GW ‘Toad’ brake van W17907, diagram AA13, converted to a generator van (possibly already rebuilt as a PW brake before its new gig). I couldn’t discover what had happened to this vehicle, but thanks to Ken now I know! It has clearly undergone further conversion work with a lot of new glazing but presumably no generator set getting in the way.

While on the move between locations the train was accompanied by lined maroon BR Mark 1 Brake Second Corridor (BSK) W34915.

Livery details for the exhibition vehicles were light blue lower sides and ends, with white upper sides, and grey roofs. Lettering on the Syphon Gs was the Westward galleon logo flanked by ‘LOOK WESTWARD’ all in blue on the upper white panels; the other two coaches carried ‘WESTWARD TELEVISION EXHIBITION TRAIN’ in slanted gold letters edged in black on the lower blue panels; this style was also applied to the generator van but shortened to ‘LOOK WESTWARD’.

I discovered that an article on the train had appeared in a now defunct model magazine dated September 1961 and managed to obtain an excellent copy online, although it cost me 40 times more than its 62-year-old cover price! This included a photo of W17907 in generator guise and I have attached a photographed copy of this, to compare to how it looks six decades later – I am unsure about copyright after such a long time but if you feel able to reproduce this please credit it to ‘M.G.D. Farr’. I understand that other articles on the Westward TV train appeared in the ‘Railway Observer’ April 1961 and ‘Railway Bylines Collection’ 2006-7.

Best regards,
Neil Phillips

This view extracted from the 'Railway Observer' September 1961 is credited to M.G.D. Farr
Many thanks indeed Neil .
Howard Sprenger writes -  Further to this my reading of Neil's article is that Mike Farr's photograph was from the "now defunct model magazine" (probably "Model Railway News" or "Model Railway Constructor") not the copy of RO that was referenced, so I'm sure there's not a problem.

1973 Memories of
Penryn & Perranwell
Howard Sprenger

Thank you for posting the remaining shots of Falmouth from the 1960s.  It was great to (virtually) hear from Trevor Tremethick again, and I enjoyed reading his memories of Penmere as it was.  By coincidence, I caught a train from there yesterday (returning from the Falmouth Shanty Festival).  It still performs a very useful service when you're at that end of town, although I'd forgotten what a slog it was up from the Moor!  Well done also for coming up with Brian Aston's surname... is he still around, I wonder?

I continued snapping the stations on the Falmouth branch in the 1970s, changing over to more stable slide film and later updating my equipment, so from now on the quality improves a bit!  Herewith are a few of Penryn and Perranwell from a visit to the branch in May 1973... just over 50 years ago!

Best regards, Howard.

Mid Cornwall Session
Jon Hird

I fancied getting out of the house this afternoon so I whipped over to Bodmin to see 5553 at work on the BWR. I planned to get a photo from the field at Charlie’s Gate, but the farmer has now moved his sheep into the field, so that was off the cards. Instead I had a little time at Colesloggett to see it come down, and then caught it at Quarry curve on the way back.

On the way home, I spotted an IET slinking beneath the road bridge at Bugle. I had a feeling it would probably cross a unit at Goonbarrow, so I quickly headed to the crossing to see if I could get a shot down the tracks to see them passing, then hung around to see the unit pull into (what’s left of) Bugle station afterwards.

The platform could do with a visit from a lawnmower!!

Nothing overly interesting I’m afraid, but a couple of railway photos on an otherwise boring Sunday nonetheless.

All the best, Jon Hird

Dear Keith,

As an ex-serviceman, you will know those names. But how do they apply to Devon's most prosperous branch line?

Two more reproduction station signs went to CoombeRail and OkeRail on Saturday.

Chaos on the Roads and Railways of Cornwall yesterday
Roger Winnen
The 3rd Saturday of June each year is always the date of the Bugle Band Festival
With long diversions from the Chiverton Cross Roundabout lasting through to Monday morning we decided to go by train to St Austell then travel on the 26 service from St Austell to Bugle. Whilst waiting for the bus to arrive, coaches started arriving at St Austell Station on the Royal Blue run from London to Cornwall and return over the weekend taking in various routes used by the coaches many years ago, We left St Austell about 15 mins late and were advised that our bus would not arrive at Bugle as the road was closed! Luck was on our side as Tony Brokenshire from the CRS stepped in and rescued us from Bowling Green for the remainder of our journey.
There was problems on the Newquay branch as the 06.19 Bristol to Newquay was cancelled, However a replaced 150 unit ran from Plymouth to Newquay and returning with the 11.14 Newquay to Paddington service, passengers changed trains at Plymouth for sets 802009 and 802010

Surprise visit to the Swindon and Cricklade Railway
Blunsdon
Ken Mumford
I went out to Purton yesterday (16th June 2023)  to photgraph some of the diverted trains because of the closure of the Severn Tunnel.  I plan to send these later or tomorrow because of other commtiments!

However, on the way home I thoght I'd call in at the SWINDON & CRICKLADE RAILWAY base at Blunsdon - what a surprise I had.  So surprised that I didn't take a proper photo of 6695 BUT got some others and a few shots of other parts of the S & C.
The 0-6-2T [such locomtoives were often used on coal trains and sometimes passenger trains in the Rhymney Valley line from Rhymney via Bargoed, Caerphilly to Cardiff and beyond to Barry  etc].was very slowly hauled by a diesel called 'BLUNSDEN'. One of the photos shows a little smokey haze arising from the 0-6-2T's chimney and it did very briefly whiste passing along the platform..   6695 was in GWR green with its safety valve bonnet painted green and the letters LDR inscrtbed on its frames indcatiing Landore shed, Swansea.

Kind regards, Ken

The Swindon and Cricklade Railway looks well worth a visit this weekend if you are up that way.

Something Blue
Craig Munday

Hi Keith
Not something blue for a wedding, but a welcome addition from the DB Cargo fleet this week. 66109 sporting an attractive dark blue, not dissimilar to the DRS colours worked down on the JIA wagons. Teesport Express was the name and it carries PD Ports branding. Perhaps the equivalent of a Thornaby class 37 arriving in the South West back in the 1980s? (maybe not then)! They simply dont have the same character do they?
Anyway it spent two days in the Golden eight week period of longest days poodling around Par Harbour and Treviscoe in stunning sunshine. If I'm honest it was TOO sunny around midday with harsh light and an almost white sky, mustn't grumble though.
I was out and about and caught it in my travels, I also saw new arrival 08752 being fettled up by the FSS engineers at Goonbarrow, I understand it was in action yesterday. The days of the CDAs may be numbered now we hear, so grab your photographs before the replacement wagons arrive.
Finally yesterday, a catch up with a legend in railway photography and railwayman alike, Mr Bernard Mills was at Trerulefoot. I couldn't resist a snap of the master in action as 2U24 approached the bridge!

Kind regards - Mazey day next - watch the weather turn.....

Craig
Don't forget to click on a picture to obtain an enlargement.
We look forward to seeing and hearing from Bernard Mills when he comes to give us a talk at Redruth on Saturday 14th October.
Many thanks to you Craig, keep up the good work.

More of Falmouth in the 60's
Howard Sprenger

Thanks for publishing my memories and photographs of Falmouth and Penmere the other day.  Here are the only other pictures I have from the 1960s.  The ones taken on 12th August 1968 show the Falmouth Docks shunter in the exchange sidings, as my DMU from Penmere drew into the Falmouth platform.  This was the day after the famous "Fifteen Guinea Special" which commemorated the end of steam on BR, so seemed particularly significant at the time!  The shots are poor quality - hurriedly taken on a cheap "point-and-shoot" camera - but perhaps they might be of interest.

We returned to Falmouth station the following day, probably hoping to see the 0-4-0ST again; no photographs this time, but Dad sketched some of the details on the station building.  Perhaps he was contemplating making a model some time!  The 1969 shot records that the station buildings had gone by then.  I'll send some more photos in due course, but they will have been taken in the 1970s.  Seems like yesterday to me, but it's 50 years ago now!

Best regards, Howard.

Penmere
Trevor Tremethick

Picture
Penmere Platform 12th August 1968. From a negative. Copyright Howard Sprenger Collection
Hello Keith and Roger

It was really nice to see the colour photographs by Howard Sprenger of Falmouth and Penmere (if a little sad to see the deterioration).

A few notes from me if of interest.

Penmere was, of course, staffed, and the two gentlemen in my time were John Grose and Bob Lambert (or Lamport – I believe the former). As I recall, Mr Lambert was tall and balding whereas the shorter Mr Grose (the senior man?) had a fine head of grey hair!

As can be seen from one of the photographs, the ‘Gents’ was at the Truro end, and I think the next door on was the ‘Ladies’, which Mum nearly always decided she needed to visit as the steam of the approaching train was visible above the trees by Theydon Road.

The middle door would have been the passenger entrance, and turning right you would face the ticket window. I was always fascinated by the ticket date stamper which gave a double ‘thump’ as the ticket was pushed in, first one end and then the other. On the wall beside the door, local paper timetables, printed in WR brown (sometimes also in blue I think) were hung up threaded on string. There seemed to me to be a permanent musty smell about the place. I don’t remember much about the waiting room itself but there must have been the usual wooden benches.

Sadly, this building was destroyed by fire, sometime in the very late 1960s (or was it the early 70s?). Someone must know the actual date.

Hope the above is of interest. By best to Howard and thanks for the memories!

Kind regards

Trevor T
Many thanks indeed Trevor - very interesting, now we all know more about the otherwise long forgotten station at Penmere.

An appreciation from Trevor Tremethick
I should be most grateful if you would send my sincere thanks to Guy Vincent for his excellent work on the withdrawn HST power cars and also my best wishes to Howard Sprenger who mentioned me  in his notes accompanying his pictures of Falmouth and Penmere.

Withdrawn HST Power Cars
Guy Vincent
Hello Keith
Reference your request on behalf of Trevor Tremethick for information regarding the stored / withdrawn GWR power cars now building up around Laira depot (as the Westerns did in the 1970s then class 50s in the late 80s/ early 90s)  here is a list of those that have so far been officially removed from traffic, correct to June 15th 2023.

From the full quota of 35 'Castle Class' Power Cars in service as recently as October 2022.  8 removed from traffic:

43005 St Michael's Mount (wdn 24.02.2023)
43022 Nether Stowey Castle (wdn 21.01.2023)
43041 St Catherine's Castle (wdn xx.12.2022)
43088 Dartmouth Castle (wdn xx.05.2023)
43158 Kingswear Castle (wdn 11.05.2023)
43160 Castle-an-Dinas (wdn 13.02.2023)
43170 Chepstow Castle (wdn xx.05.2023)  Moved to Potter Group site at Ely, Cambs, on 07th June with coaches                                                                         48115, 48125 & 49107 hauled by 37510 and covered on CRS at the time).

43171 Raglan Castle (wdn xx.11.2022)

As I understand it the engine hours of each PC, the amount of time remaining until the next major body exam and the general condition of major components (bogies, alternators, electrics etc) are all being carefully monitored and from time to time specific PC's will be stopped either for component exchange, maintenance or storage.   With less sets in daily use there is now a surplus of power cars meaning that operating hours of individual PCs can be better managed.

According to a report dated 13th June on the Rail Express magazine website and accessed today via Press Reader the following vehicles are due to be stripped out at Laira and then moved away from the depot by road for scrap: 43005, 43041, 43171, 48116, 48134, 48135 and 49113.

Today the following sets were reported in traffic:

43027 GW06 48118 48117 48149  49106 43192

43154 GW07 48121 48120 48119 49108 43004

43016 GW08 48124 48123 48122 49117 43186

43155 GW09 48127 48126 48125 49109 43156

43189 GW10 48130 48129 48128 49110 43187

43092 GW14 48142 48141 48140 49114 43188

43153 GW15 48145 48144 48143 49115 43040

The above leaves  power cars 43009 43010 43029 43042 43093 43094 43097 43098 43122 43162 43172 43194 43198 as spare so that would explain why Laira is looking rather full!    I would speculate that 43093 is likely to be the next one removed from traffic.

As Trevor said, besides the GWR  PCs at Laira the Cross Country fleet are also based there. These do not see as much use as they did (often only two sets in daily use) so it is often possible to see several sets of stock and PCs stabled around the depot.

Cross Country Power Cars are 43207 43208 43239 43285 43301 43303 43304 43321 43357 43366 43378 43384

Hi Keith, I took a few photos of St Austell signal box today. I believe it closed in 1980 but is still doing well 43 years later. I was at Lostwithiel later where 802019, working 2C26 13:42 Plymouth to Penzance, failed with engine issues and was moved into the down loop. Hanging Gardens of Bond Street
Redruth
Phil Hawke

Keith,  I had to make a visit to Redruth yesterday.  For  a  moment I thought the "hanging gardens of bond street"  were being removed but a conversation with one of the staff revealed that this was "emergency work"  following a complaint from  Royal Mail who were losing their vans in the jungle  therefore  only the trees overhanging the parking area ( ex Tommy Harris's builders merchants)   were getting the chop.

On the other side of the street the former GWR road motor depot has a new lease of life as yet another car repair business makes use of it.

Hi apologies for unannounced email . . I brought this sign on ebay a few years back as I liked the name, but couldn’t find any reference to its use, I found a photo on the net that shows the inside of of the hut that housed the GF which seems more elaborate than the normal outside GF so must have been of significant importance . Any info on this particular GF purpose appreciated. Thanks. Mike

I was born and raised in Derby and throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s we regularly visited Falmouth for our annual holiday. Our visits sometimes coincided with the Falmouth Model Railway Show, but often didn't, so I took to visiting the club's Arwenack Avenue clubroom on a Friday evening where I was always given a very warm welcome.  The star attraction was the extensive club layout of Falmouth station complete with overall roof, and a particular highlight was meeting Pat English, whose series on the Helston branch had featured in several issues of "Model Railway News" through 1967.  One year (probably 1968) I took with me a model of Nancegollen signal box that I'd made from his plans, and was very grateful for the encouraging words he had for the efforts of a 14-year-old.  I remember becoming friendly with a couple of lads of around my own age - one was called Brian (surname forgotten) [we think Aston]  and the other was Trevor Tremethick, whose name features regularly here.

Attached are a few snaps taken on 12th August 1968 when the original buildings at Falmouth and Penmere still survived - I think the Falmouth buildings had gone by the following year and Penmere lasted a while longer.  Some enthusiasts might recognise the date as being the day after the famous "Fifteen Guinea Special" that marked the end of steam on BR, so I was astounded to see a steam loco at Falmouth when I arrived on the DMU from Penmere.  It was, of course, the dock shunter.  Needless to say, they were very happy times, and fostered a love of Cornwall and its railways that has lasted for the best part of 60 years.

Best wishes, Howard Sprenger, Blisland, Bodmin.

Kingswear visit
Guy Vincent

Good evening Keith
Today we paid a visit to the Dartmouth Steam Railway and were rewarded with surprise haulage by the line's resident type 3 diesel D6975 or, if you prefer, 37275.  This was due to fire risk we were told although at the other end of the seven coach formation GWR steam loco 4277 'Hercules' was working in the 'up direction' towards Paignton and on the second set of carriages GWR 2-6-2 no 4555 was working solo.    For the record 37275 worked the 1035, 1150, 1305, 1450 and 1610 departures from Paignton and then assisted between Brittania Crossing and Churston on the rear of the 1110, 1220, 1410, 1525 and 1640 services from Kingswear.    So long as the rain holds off it seems likely that this operation may well continue.

Laira Report
Trevor Tremethick

Hi Keith and Roger

Called here today on the way back from the garden centre for a squint through the ‘jungle’ on the Embankment Road side.

43093 ‘Berkeley Castle’ (formerly ‘Old Oak Common HST Depot 1976-2018’) is currently the only spare power car in the graveyard (if I am correct in calling it that). Three workers walked by on the other side of the fence, but the traffic on Embankment Road was too loud for me to call to them

On the operational roads were 43029 and 43042 at opposite ends of a Castle set, beside 43301 of Cross Country. Unable to identify the inboard HST. Frustratingly, there is a power car right over the other side by the old steam shed sidings and I can’t get it. It seems to have been there a long time.

It would be good to have a list of power cars withdrawn as against those still in service, but I realise that would be a big ask and would be constantly changing.

Best wishes to all

Trevor

Alex on the move
Mick House

My wife and I were traveling up to Sussex on the 8th June 2023 at 06.30 in the morning and on the Okhampton bypass we spotted P405D Alex one of the two IMERYS shunters from Rocks Driers on the back of a low-loader, so we stopped in a layby just north of Sticklepath and got photo No1 then, as we were overtaking it north of South Tawton I took photo No2. The same low-loader would have dropped off the 08 shunter 08 752 at Rocks Driers the night before or earlier that morning.

Regards Mick House.

Class 40 Railtour
Guy and Charlotte Vincent
Hello Keith
Last Saturday (10th June) Pathfinder Railtours ran their 50th anniversary tour from Burton on Trent to Weymouth.  The outward trip from Cheltenham was via Kemble, Swindon, Reading West, Basingstoke, Southampton and Poole with the return leg made via the former GWR route through Yeovil, Westbury and Bath.    Charlotte caught the train passing Berkley Marsh north of Frome with an immaculate D345 (40145) leading and two-tone green class 47 47815 'Great Western' at the rear while I went to Bradford on Avon where a short pathing stop was made.  Nice to see the original F&W Railtours 'Vulture' headboard on the front of the loco.

NINETEEN SIXTY TWO – PART 24
An afternoon at Great Aish

Michael L. Roach
The village of Aish is a short distance north-west of the town of South Brent which once had a railway station - the junction station for the Kingsbridge Branch. Aish is now one of Network Rail's timing points because of its emergency crossover located there. Great Aish is a large house south of the village looking out onto the railway line. Leaving the site of South Brent station heading west the line passes under an overbridge carrying Vicarage Road over the railway. In 1962 this was a good place to see if there was a train in the up passenger loop to the west of the station. The line passes over the River Avon on its journey from Dartmoor to the estuary at Kingsbridge and immediately embarks on a long left hand curve which takes the line through 90 degrees from facing almost west to almost south. The radius of the curve is a little over 20 chains. The line here is on gently rising gradients to a minor summit at the site of Wrangaton Station.
The outside of the curve at Great Aish is ideal for photographing trains in the afternoon from about 14.00 hours onwards. I decided to spend much of the afternoon of 2 June 1962 in the fields to the west of the railway. It was a Saturday two weeks before the start of the summer timetable that year and some extra trains had started to run. I knew that there were very few regular scheduled steam trains left at this time as dieslisation was about 90 percent complete at the time but I was usually optimistic that some steam power would appear. I was there in the fields at Aish from about 3.15pm to 6.00pm and saw just four steam engines of which three were lucky extras. On the way to Aish I had stopped at Stowford Bridge, Ivybridge to see a train I hoped would produce steam, and it did in the shape of a Grange and a King. At this time steam double-headers and King-class locos were both very rare on the South Devon main line.  As the afternoon wore on and the sun went round I moved northwards to get a different view of the curve.  The sight of the afternoon was 5917 on a 10-coach train heading westwards. The limit for a Hall on Dainton and Rsttery banks was 275 tons (about 8C) so it should have had assistance from Newton Abbot to Brent, after which it was allowed to take 392 tons (about 11C). 5917 had been based at Laira until May 1962 when it moved to Exeter. The last train to be seen was a down freight train which could have been the 10.00am from Avonmouth running more than 90 minutes late or the 4.55pm from Hackney Yard running 20 minutes early. Both terminated at Tavistock Junction Yard. I think the former is more likely in view of the St. Phillips Marsh loco hauling the train. Readers are recommended to look at the OS 25-inch plan on NLS Maps, particularly the 1873-1888 series where it can be seen that the main line was then single track and Brent Station had just one platform because the Kingsbridge Branch did not open until 1893.

Kevin Jenkin

Hello,
Here's one from the further end of the CRS zone.
Preserved class 40 d345 / 40145 on the 0701 1Z40 from Burton on Trent to Weymouth, seen racing through Swaythling station. I believe Class 40s were as rare in the Southampton as they were in Cornwall back in the last century. I recall the thrill of seeing one whistling into Bristol Temple Meads on a parcels train from the north in the mid 80s.
This special raised a similar level of excitement and i was surprised to see 7 teenage rail fans on the station, which isn't an obvious photographic haunt. I managed to get my bike info the left hand side of the shot. I think one of the regular contributors also does this.

Thanks, Kevin.
