Royal Scot on English Riviera Express
(Bristol-Kingswear via Westbury)
Bradford-on-Avon station on an unseasonably damp and slightly chilly post-lockdown summer Sunday morning. Around 100 intending passengers and interested spectators gathered as LMS 4-6-0 46100 'Royal Scot' arrives and departs with Saphos Trains 'English Riveiera Express'  1Z27 0751 Bristol Temple Meads-Kingswear.  Temperatures were around 10 degrees cooler than they were just a few days ago and persistant drizzle with accompanying mist spoiled the occasion.   A further sighting of the train was made at Clink Road, Frome where conditions were far worse as can be seen from the amount of steam filling the cutting.  In the final shot notice the old GWR tin lamp hut on the right, this has now outlived the long-demolished Clink Road Junction Signal Box by almost 37 years and rising!

For the record the train was formed : 46100 'Royal Scot' (originally built in 1930 as 6152 The King's Dragoon Guardsman) 3125 3045 80044 3122 3100 3148 13227 9479 1203 3330 35465 (46100's Support Coach) and diesel D1935, previously 47805, 47650, 47257).

No doubt you'll be inundated with photos of this - but perhaps not quite in this location!  The train is today's (Sunday, June 20) Bristol TM - Kingswear special, hauled by 46100 Royal Scot. The weather is typical railtour weather - with drizzle and low cloud - and the location is just west of Norton Fitzwarren at the point where the West Somerset Railway and the former Taunton-Barnstaple lines diverge. In photo 2, the complicated triangle layout, serving the spent-ballast plant can be seen in front of the train. The train had spent almost an hour at Taunton for a water stop and was exactly on time.

Somerset shunter arrival
Guy Vincent
A new arrival at Whatley Quarry for Mendip Rail is former Scottish based shunter 08730.  This was delivered new to 65C (Parkhead, a sub-shed of Eastfield, Glasgow) on 23rd August 1960.  All future transfers were to depots in Scotland and following privatisation it was eventually acquired by Alstom and based at Glasgow works and used as works pilot where it was still to be found in late 2018.  08730 was for several years named 'The Caley' but this is no longer the case.   In more recent times 08730 has been purchased by RSS (Railway Support Services) and overhauled for spot-hire use as per its arrival at Whatley.      The loco is painted in pale blue livery with a grey roof, yellow radiator end and red RSS branding.

Not too far away at Midsomer Norton station is another former Scottish shunter, D4095 / 08881.  Coincidentally this loco was also delivered new (23.08.1961) to a Scottish depot (Stirling) and spent most of its career in Scotland including a spell at Glasgow works.

Photos of 08730 taken through bars of locked entrance gates to quarry where, obviously, entry is strictly prohibited.

Royal Blue in Cornwall

Roger/Keith. Knowing that your interest extends beyond trains, I thought I'd give you an update on tomorrow's Royal Blue run through Cornwall.  Sorry that it's short notice.
Our friends at the Thames Valley and Great Western Omnibus Trust are running another of their marathon long distance coach runs.  This year it's from Harlow to Stroud, via Southampton and Truro, surely a long way round !  Tomorrow they will  leaving Plymouth, after an overnight stop, at 0900, passing through Liskeard town at around 1005, St Austell at 1155, into Truro coach park at 1230.  Then on to Newquay at 1335, Wadebridge 1405, Launceston 1515, Bideford 1645 and on to Barnstaple for an overnight stop, arriving at around 1710.
More details on their website http://www.tvagwot.org.uk/event-royalblue2021.htm which also has more details on the routeing.  As in previous years, the cavalcade tries to follow the old roads, rather that using modern bypasses.  It looks a though up to 20 coaches will be on the run.
You might be interested to see one of my many photos taken on the run in 2012, passing through Liskeard.
Memories of the past - thank you Peter. The Link gives you all the details.

Picture
This afternoon I saw this ex-Thamesdown Transport double decker [was 174 in that fleet] and some photos were taken of it in the yard of the fromer Uffington Station which are attached. I understood from a gentleman [who lives nearby] that someone from Yorkshire saw this bus on the Cornwall Railway Society website and is going to tow or put on a low loader to take back to Yorkshire to restore it. Date of move - unknown. Some seats are missing as when bought from T.T. I hope to get further details soon. Kind regards, Ken (Mumford)
Thank you Ken.  For fear of getting the 'sack' I think that will be enough on buses for the time being.

Estervarney Grange
Adrian King

Picture
Mike Roach has once again sent in another excellent article and photographs regarding the much missed 6800 Class Grange locomotive this week and in particular No. 6836 Estervarney Grange, I thought to send the attached photograph. Although I have sent the photo to CRS previously (I didn't take it unfortunately but bought it in a shop in New George Street Plymouth in 1962) as it shows the very same Estervarney Grange double-heading with Castle No. 5036 Lyonshall Castle leaving Newton Abbot on a summer Saturday in 1959 when steam still reigned supreme.  Take care
Cheers Adrian
As you say Adrian - a most interesting article by Mike Roach - we have a lot to thank him and his camera for.

Signal Finials & Manhole covers
Richard Holladay
Picture

-- My brothers and I have been recollecting the comments our Dad might have made when we were much younger and pre 1979 when Garton & King's Foundry at Tan Lane closed - whilst Dad acknowledged that the foundry often melted old railway line chairs (a good source of scrap) for recasting - doubtless into Manhole Covers !  he did mention that the company - I cannot recall when - made signal Finial Tops for the GWR - I know there is a collection (Malcolm Stone) of these at Launceston Raiway Museum but if anyone has access to any information / documentation that refers to the system of Codeing cast into the GWR (I don't think it was L & SWR or SR that G & K cast for) finials that relates to the source foundry and consequently can confirm this tale I would like to hear from them - can you 'spread the word' please.
One other point - on the English Heritage Blog about Manhole Covers - see
https://heritagecalling.com/2021/06/03/walking-on-history-surprising-secrets-of-manholes/

G & K gets really good coverage - one of the oldest covers which I have got  Nicky Hughes, the author, to include is literally 'Just over the border' into Devon and is , together with an identical twin - in the forecourt of Bere Alston Station and is as old as the Station itself and is the first image on The Blog.
Perhaps if your members should cast their eyes downwards on Railway Station Property within Devon & Cornwall and see a Cover without LTD attached to the Garton & King name they are looking at a bit of pre 1925 history - I.d be please to see an image and confirmation of location.
Trust you are keeping safe
Regards

Oh, G & K had a contract to supply, in the early 1960s, Pick Up Shoes for the London Underground -  details appearing on the www.exeterfoundry.org.up website shortly!

Thanks for your query, can anybody help Richard - eyes down please.

The Grange Class of the GWR
Michael L. Roach.
A useful mixed traffic Class

The Grange class was introduced by the Great Western Railway in 1936 and the design was derived from the Churchward Moguls of 1911 and shared many components with the Hall Class of 1928. All the main dimensions and fittings were similar to the Hall Class except that the diameter of the driving wheels was reduced by 4 inches (101.6mm). This gave a useful increase in tractive effort of 6 percent but more importantly gave the Grange class better hill-climbing abilities. The class proved particularly useful on lines with switchback gradients like the Cornish main line. Of the 258 Hall class many entered preservation soon after withdrawal from British Railways and many later from Barry scrapyard. Of the 80 Grange class built every single one was withdrawn and cut up leaving none in preservation; however this gap is now being filled with the construction of the 81st Grange by the Betton Grange Society. In this short feature we will see four examples of the class on typical duties in Devon and Cornwall in the summer of 1961. In the last picture we see 6860 waiting to take over a train at Plymouth Station. I travelled on the train as far as Bodmin Road and it kept time with 12 coaches weighing in the region of 420 tons. The train was allowed three hours to reach Penzance and the limit for a Grange over the route was 385 tons.

A different angle
Craig Munday
Hi Keith
The wonderful eight weeks around Mid Summers Day allow the light into corners not seen in the other months of the year. The down sleeper train is notoriously ahead of the sun on its journey west from Plymouth. Two locations in high Summer allow a head on lit view of the train, Trerulefoot and, additionally now Restormel allow a good head on view. The recent cutting back has revealed a suitable gap in the trees for a shot off the bridge there. On a beautiful morning, the Monday morning 1C50 (departing later from Plymouth) catches the superb light as it leans into the curve with 57603.

Alos the MPV has been active in the County visiting the Fowey & St Ives branch. Due to crew knowledge, two class 66s were the traction and 66140 & 66120 make a fine sight working down from Didcot  on Sunday 13th. The turntable at St Blazey in the second shot looking rather unkempt.

Another I phone shot from St Austell sees the up sleeper under a dreamy sky at 11pm as we approach the longest day of the year.

Some other sunshine shots are also included.

I was out at Par station last evening to see 66120, DR98907 and 66140 on 3Z15, the 21:30 St Blazey - Exeter Riverside. Please find a couple of photos. Interestingly the lead loco has the tail lamp affixed.

Creech St Michael

After a break of about two years,  the Fairwater Yd to Doncaster Wood Yd ran today, conveying old sleepers, probably from
the weekend possession at Twyford/Ruscombe. The loco, 66560, seen passing Creech.
 Best wishes, Bill.

Coals to St Ives
Laurence Hansford
Secondly just a couple of points about the interesting photos of Steam at St Ives which have recently emerged:
Regarding the station head-shunt being concreted over for handling fish traffic I can confirm it was still present well into the 50s.  I can’t remember exactly when it was torn up but I think it was done in 1954 when the viaduct was rebuilt.  At the time the opportunity was taken to replace most of the signalling (for example all the point rodding was changed from the old rusty round iron bar to the modern galvanised iron inverted trough section running on hidden rollers) as well as some of the track in  the station area.  I also remember that lying between the two tracks was a long piece of rather perished rubber hose still connected to a large tap protruding from the ballast.  This was very similar to what could be seen at other stations used for replenishing train toilet cisterns.  I also recall the area still smelling fishy although this probably came from empty fish boxes which tended to be piled in the area between the buffer stops and the weigh-bridge hut.
Now, as for the use of large prairies, the period between the official cessation of steam on the branch and the real end of steam was rather interesting.  To start with, the type 2 diesels (D63XX class) were used just as a straight replacement for a steam engine so most trains consisted of a “B” set with the diesel running round at each end, the only difference being that they never went up to the engine shed for water. Even the evening double length train back to St Erth ran with a double-headed pair.  Then after some months DMUs started to be used instead , initially consisting of a “bubblecar” and a trailer.  This caused unexpected problems.  Up until this point most freight movements (mostly coal, mangle wurzels, sugar beet or motor-bike paniers) were handled by tagging 2 or 3 trucks behind the branch passenger train.  Not sure whose idea it was but St Ives railwaymen saw the bubblecar and trailer as a push-pull engine and coach, reasoning that as the trailer weighed 30 odd tons, the bubblecar on its own would be able to deal with 2-3 trucks.  Accordingly, for a while, when required they would drive down the sea siding, uncouple and disconnect the trailer and dump it there, pick up the trucks and take them on the next timetabled train to St Erth.  The trailer would be picked up later.
Not surprisingly, this practice was sooner or later to run into trouble.  With ordinary branch passenger coaches it only really mattered that the brake vacuum pipes were coupled up properly; if there was a problem with the steam heating pipes or the lighting connectors it wasn’t exactly the end of the world.  These new-fangled diesels were a bit different: pretty much all the connections had to be reliably made for the whole train to be fully controllable and on more than one occasions they ended-up with a train which they couldn’t get to function properly, meaning that another DMU had to be called out complete with a fitter to sort the problem.
It was quickly realised  that splitting/coupling of DMUs was best carried out by those who knew what they were doing and only when necessary.

A bubblecar and trailer had only just sufficient power (300 HP, I think) to manage the 1 in 60 gradients on the St Ives line so from then on goods vehicles were gathered together until there were enough to warrant an afternoon goods train in the care of a D63XX loco.  However, that is not to say that never again were goods waggons towed behind DMUs; they were, during the summer months when one or frequently a pair of 3-car units were running which had spare power available.  Typical loads were coal trucks and PLA vans carrying stuff like Boy Scout’s gear.
It is a generally accepted wisdom that these early diesels were unreliable and indeed they did have their problems although, having witnessed their introduction, it is my impression that the DMUs were far more troublesome than the type 22s with unexpected failures like broken drive shafts digging into the ballast.  However, I think some of the problems can be attributed to the way they were initially handled by men more accustomed to the near indestructability of the steam engine.  I also believe that once they had learnt how not to mis-treat their new steads, reliability improved.
So, unexpected substitutions there were; they could be another DMU or a loco plus coaches in place of a DMU, a D63XX in place of another and a steam engine could pop up anytime.  And, has been noted, because the dieselisation of West Cornwall was nearly total, the steam engine would be what was available, a pannier tank, a 45XX or a 55XX.  I found it very frustrating because I was doing my A-Levels at the time so missed the goings-on during weekdays although I might be lucky enough to see something after I jumped off the school  bus at about 4:45.
I wished I had had a camera to record some of what I saw but money was tight; however I did start to take notes from early May 1962 so, for the record I can say that from then on steam featured as follows:-
Monday 11th June 1962   A pair of 3-car DMUs ran until lunchtime then 5508 took over with 5 carriages
Saturday 16th June 1962  5545 & 4570 were used on an 8 coach Sunday School special (this was the last Saturday before start of Summer Timetable)
Saturday 23rd June 1962  There was a lot of activity in addition to the morning UP and evening DOWN through Cornish Riviera.  At 11:15 D6318 & D6324 arrived with 8 assorted corridor coaches from different regions.  Then 22 minutes later 5545 & 4570 arrived with a rake of 8 WR corridor coaches.  These later departed as 3 separate trains.  In between, a 3-car DMU ran normal branch services. At 18:00  4570 & 5508 arrived with the 8 coach down Cornish Riviera which they later took back to St Erth without assistance from a third locomotive
Friday 3rd August 1962     At 15:00 5545 arrived with 5 suburban coaches plus 2 covered waggons full of luggage, an open waggon full of drums of creosote, 2 Grampus waggons (on its way, a quantity of wooden sleepers had been off-loaded at Lelant), a waggon containing empty fish boxes and the St Ives Brake Van.  After much shunting 5545 left at 16:45 with 5 goods waggons.  Normal branch services were run by a pair of 3-car DMUs.
Friday 10th August 1962    A pair of 3-car DMUs ran until early afternoon when 5545 arrived with 4 suburban coaches, 4 goods wagons and the St Ives Brake Van, returning later with just 1 goods waggon.  Rest of day in charge of D6312.  This was the last known visit of a steam locomotive to St Ives before complete dieselisation.
Picture
4-car DMU stopped at Lelant whilst towing an empty coal truck and a PLA van from St Ives to St Erth. The goods waggons must have been Vacuum Fitted, otherwise there would have been a brake van tacked on behind. What a week
G7 arrives
Craig Munday

Hi Keith

Well, love it or loathe it, most Cornish folk cant have missed the arrival of the G7 delegates in the Duchy! From cavalcades to road closures to the Royal Train, the week has been anything but dull!

I was astounded to come across five aircraft land near Carlyon Bay bridge the other evening on the way home from work. Two US air force Sikorsky helicopters and three awesome Ospreys. It was a practice run for the G7 banquet. Due to poor weather, I think the poor weather put paid to the live event sadly.

Then on the 11th, there was a G7 banquet at Eden attended by three generations of Royals, all on the same train. The Queen, Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge all arrived by train at St Austell. The ten coach train was magnificent, despite the poor weather, hauled by immaculate 67005/006. St Blazey Driver Mark Bartlett was up front through the Duchy, and I got a chance to speak to him at Burngullow where the train recessed. Myself and other colleagues were dotted along the line.

Also included is a remarkable (for 2021) line up in Penzance station on the 9th. Five generations of trains occupy the station area, 57306 on the rear of the down midnight, ready to draw the stock out to Long Rock, and on the far left Colas Rail 37421 with the Network Rail test train. Voyager, HST and Hitachi trains also await their next duty.

Phew, going to get my breath back now...

The new bridge at Coulson Park
Lostwithiel
Andrew and Diane Jones

Dear Keith and Valerie, It is my birthday today, one that I shared with the Duke of Edinburgh, although I am not sure he shared my interest in railways!
A day out to celebrate took Diane and I to Lostwithiel, one of my favourite Cornish towns.
We couldn’t park in the towns free car park, (because due to a lack of foresight on the railways part it is now used for commuting passengers). So we carried on to the wonderful riverside Coulson park which has a small parking area. This is accessed under the new railway bridge which has just been installed and what a remarkable feat it is. It is situated on the up side and unusually built on a curve with a considerable cant.
There were three bridges at this location, but the Fowey Branch crossing was removed some years ago and the layout rationalised to save money and I suppose we are extremely lucky that we live enlightened times as I am sure the mainline would have been singled at this point in the 60’s.
Network rail should be congratulated on this difficult task and I know from a reliable source that there were initial concerns over excessive movement but all seems to have settled in.
Please find attached four photographs taken today Thursday 10th June.
A weather worn and seemingly unloved class 66 still in EWS livery was in charge of a clay shipment to Fowey.
I have included a long shot of this picturesque location and two photographs of the under structure including the expansion bearings.
Lostwithiel is still just about hanging on to its traditional railway credentials and if you have not visited this location, don’t wait too long, times are a changing fast!

The attached view taken by Dad as a teenager in the mid to late 1930s is pretty poor quality, but I hope is sufficiently interesting to warrant publication.  Taken on a Box Brownie, at least he had the good sense to pan the camera so that the front of the loco is reasonably sharp.  4947 Nanhoran Hall is arriving at Bodmin Road on what is noted as a Plymouth-Penzance service.  It is very much a one-off; unfortunately there aren't any more from this period of boyhood Cornish holidays.

Here are some photos of today's Solihull to Plymouth charter train at Swindon this morning.

The train was t&t by 47593 & 47614 to Bristol T M where 46100 Royal Scot & 45231 Sherwood Forster replaced 47593 for the run to Plymouth.

I would have liked to get a full length shot of the train but as soon as the cumber left a freight train pulled up on the middle road.  The two trains actually crossed just out of shot.

LMS 4-6-0 46100 'Royal Scot' and LMS Stanier 4-6-0 Black Five 45231 'The Sherwood Forester' with 47614 on the rear with the 1Z70 06.00 Solihull - Plymouth charter operated by Saphos Train returning with the delayed 1Z72 17.00 Plymouth - Solihull. The first two pictures are at Langford Bridge just west of what was Aller Junction at 13.30. Although overcast there was a bit of brightness unlike at Brent at 17.37 in the third picture which can best be described as 'dreich'. Irrespective of the weather these were a magnificent sight.
Regards, Clive Smith.
