Exeter Central Station
David Tozer

I visited Exeter Central today. The main reason was that with SWR operating a special service between Salisbury and Exeter all trains terminated at Central Station rather than St David's. This provided the rare opportunity to photograph Class 159 units visiting the seldom used bay platform beside Northernhay Park.
The strike timetable saw no trains serve Feniton, Whimple, Cranbrook and
Pinhoe. Oddly trains West of Salisbury were timed to sit at Yeovil Junction for up to 19 minutes and the two train sets used always crossed at Yeovil Junction. The stations not served by rail had an hourly rail replacement bus service.
Whilst awaiting the SWR service 150001 appeared working the 1343 Barnstaple to Exmouth service. This and 150002 appear to have regular diagrams on the Exmouth - Paignton or Barnstaple circuit.

Pt 2 Torrington Station

A visit to Torrington Station after visiting Meeth, where it now trades as the 'Puffing Billy Trading Company', sadly it was closed so no inside shots could be taken, but the Tarka Valley Railway have their stock and base there, since forming in 2008. 2 Diesel Shunters 'Torrington Cavalier' and 'Progress' at either end with a Mk1 TSO no.3924, Oil tanker no.PO 653, BR Clay Hood no.743169 and Brake Van no.954681 were on site

St Erth Remodelled
Craig Munday
The recent enhancement works on the Bay platform are now largely complete. The new curved platform is exaggerated through a telephoto lens as the four car train awaits departure, still controlled by semaphore signals. The new high density platform and car park spaces has resulted in the Park and Ride station at Lelant Saltings being effectively closed - only one train a day currently serves the station.  Lelant Saltings opened in 1977 and revolutionized day trips to the road congested resort. An improved journey time of 11 minutes now applies without the Saltings call.

Also of note is the still extant, though shortened Bay Siding to the right hand side.

                     Kind regards,  Craig Munday

Many thanks indeed Craig, your privileged views are much appreciated.

A brilliant sight at
Bristol Temple Meads
Paul Negus

What a lovely sight - a rake of ten gleaming red and cream coaches under the train shed at Temple Meads this morning! It's great to see coaches with no peeling roof paint and I do like Saphos Train's logo.

Braunton and support coach - red and cream too - plus two Class 47s were tucked away in Barton Hill TMD just to the east of the station.

These had formed the English Riviera Express which featured on the website yesterday.

        Best wishes, Paul Negus
Many thanks Paul.

Devon Weekend Ramblings Part 1 Meeth Halt 14.6.2019

A weekend away gave me the opportunity to visit some disused railways sites, the 1st of 4 emails, starting with covering Meeth Halt, which only lasted from 27.7.1925 to 1.3.1965, while driving past by car on the way to Great Torrington.

Redruth Viaduct
Paddy Bradley Collection

Picture
An unusual view of the timber viaduct at Redruth taken from West Trewirgie Road, above the school. -From the Paddy Bradley Collection. A very significant building to the right of centre is the now long gone Flower Pot Chapel which was destroyed by fire. On this side of the embankment lies Treruffe Chapel - this building has survived the ravages of time and has been converted into flats. Brunels viaduct is 489' long with a maximun height of 61' was partially replaced in 1887 by a masonry structure built alongside the timberwork. viaduct. Being in the centre of town there wasn't sufficient space to build the double track replacement structure alongside the existing viaduct and in consequence the replacement viaduct was built in two halves lengthwise, once one half was completed the timber structure was removed and work continued. Looking at the structure from below it is impossible to see any joint between the two halves. Work started in 1887 and was completed in August 1888.

SR 34046 'Braunton' pauses at Bradford-on-Avon to pick up passengers that have booked on Saphos Trains 1Z27 0800 Bristol Temple Meads-Kingswear (for Dartmouth) 'English Riviera Express'.  According to the Saphos website, bizarrely Network Rail would not permit the return leg of  the trip to set down here, instead Saphos advised those who would have done to instead alight at Westbury for a connecting GWR service. No reason was given by NR for this strange turn of events.

Roger Matthews celebrates
Royal Albert Bridge Crossing
Gareth Thornton

Hi Keith, Today at 08:00 hrs marked 50 years since signalman Roger Matthew's joined the railway. When asked what he wanted to do to mark the event he said he'd like to walk across the Tamar Bridge. I was lucky enough to be among the few he asked to come along, how could I say no? So here's a couple of shots from this morning. The first picture shows Roger, an obvious Brunel fan with Steve Allen, the local operations manager who worked really hard to make it happen. All in all a great experience for all who attended, now to see what Roger has planned for the next 50 years!  Congratulations to Roger on the celebration of a Happy Event, and thanks to Gareth for the pictures.

Last day at
Helston
Michael Forward

Hello again Roger, Seeing today’s picture of the road side of Helston station has inspired me to send my own picture on the same day,3 November 1962.This shows D6312 on a late afternoon service for Gwinear Road.A fellow enthusiast’s notebook intrudes into the picture. A lot of enthusiasts there on that sad day. I did not travel on the last service.
            What memories, Michael.
Many thanks Michael

Recalling the Peaks
Neil Phillips
Hi Keith,
I saw Clive Smith’s photo of 46014 at Exeter St David’s on 4/1/83, and thought it worth mentioning that, as D151, this Peak was the first of its type to reach Penzance on 30/12/69. This was the start of local crew-training on Class 46 and my photo of it at Truro the following day – with overactive steam heating boiler (and the sun about to set on the Swinging Sixties).
D151 was renumbered to 46014 in December 1973, its nose ends were modified from centre headcode panels to twin marker lights in March 1977, and it survived long enough to become one of the final 10 Class 46s in traffic, being withdrawn from Gateshead in May 1984 and scrapped at Swindon Works in February 1986.
    Best regards,  Neil Phillips
Many thanks  Neil for all the details

CRS Railtour on the  **
Portreath Branch!
Paddy Bradley
Picture
Directors on Portreath branch Hayle Rly PC dated 4th August 1904. Copyright Paddy Bradley Collection. -- This marvellous picture of what might have been the first railtour in Cornwall, almost certainly on the Portreath branch. This is long before the days of 'Petticoat Government' so it must have been a pleasure outing along the branch. Take a look at the passengers dressed in all their finery. There appear to be nine ladies three young men and two children. The driver poses on his steed. From the steps leaning against the wagon which is fitted with 'dumb buffers', this is obviously a posed photograph, and what a gem. Perhaps the party were just about to disembark for a walk to the beach or had just returned from an outing there. The date on the postcard is 4th August 1904.
A much appreciated comment from Roy Hart who had an early view of this photograph.
This photo was taken at the approach to the summit of Portreath incline. I think 'Directors' is someone's guess, or a joke, as the occupants of the wagon are mostly female. I'd say directors of any company at that time were exclusively male!). There appears to be only one male present over the age of about 15. This is some sort of social gathering (note the ladder up to the wagon) and is perhaps the GWR doing a favour for the Bassets, who owned all the land around there.
The incline summit is in the distance around the curve. The winding engine is off the picture to the left.
I would date this around 1900. Note that the wagon has 'dumb' buffers. The engine is an early 0-6-0 saddle tank from Carn Brea shed.
The Portreath branch was most certainly not authorised for passenger trains (though there were excursions in Hayle Railway/ WCR days, when rules were lax) so for this to happen in the GWR era, you needed big influence!

                         Roy
Many thanks Roy
Re the double asterisk in the heading ** re railtour I can only add - if only!!  Th CRS have done walks over bits of the branch which are still accessible.

Operational Problems on
Dainton Bank
Clive Smith
Picture
It's 5pm and 46014 stands at Exeter St Davids on platform 1 with the 1V15 10.50 Newcastle - Plymouth relief train on the 4th January 1983. This was a fairly lightweight load seven but I was looking forward to a run over the South Devon banks behind the one of the diminishing class 46s. Alas it was not to be as half an hour later 46014 was literally running on fumes as it ran out of fuel, the train grinding to a halt by Stoneycombe quarry and this was where we remained for another 80 minutes. 47128 was running light from Tavistock Junction and passed us at 18.15 heading east and was promptly turned around at Newton Abbot and then ordered to push the stricken relief train. We were under way at 18.50 and pushed into Totnes where a 15 minute run-round took place before 47128 hauled the the failed 46014 and the relief to Plymouth arriving just under two hours late. A sorry tale and a reminder to check fuel gauges.
              Regards Clive Smith
Many thanks Clive

Many thanks Clive for the details of what must have been a very frustrating yet interesting journey.

A much appreciated note on the above pictures by expert Roy Hart
A bit of background: New Cook's Kitchen shaft at South Crofty opened in the 1920s with, as was common, a secondhand beam pumping engine. These engines worked continuously, of course. At 5-45 am on December 28th 1950 (a singularly cold night, it seems) the beam cracked and broke (the engine being in motion, of course) and a 7 -ton piece of it crashed downwards, fortunately not crashing down the shaft and smashing all the pitwork, but landing at the lip of the shaft. Electric pumps were quickly installed, but there was a lot of heavy lifting to do, so the company hired a traction engine for the job. These pictures show it being unloaded at Carn Brea station.
Carn Brea station box (closed in 1953) can be seen. The handwriting is, of course, Jack Trounson's.

Penzance on a
Summer Sunday
Craig Munday

A most enjoyable weekend spent at my favourite Cornish boxes, the P's... Par and Penzance. The weekends are frenetic these days, not the slumbering Sundays of the 1990s when the service was sparse. We move as many people on a Sunday as a Friday these days.

Midday at Penzance saw three 2x4 HST sets occupy the station for six minutes. With some thoughtful platforming (!) I got them in platforms 4,3 and 2. The blue power cars sat in the sun of platform four for a few hours. Later in the afternoon, the four platforms were occupied with our standard traction for some years to come, Voyager, IET and short formed HST. But then, as we know, nothing stays the same for ever does it?

The evening brought in some the most awesome cloud effects I've ever seen over Mounts Bay. We stayed dry whilst the rest of the County took a battering from thunder and vicious showers.

Some pictures from the days: -

Just across the road from the station building lies the three storey Jarvis store whilst immediately beyond the houses are in an area known as Jack's Splatt - these were destroyed by enemy action during world war 2 - the area is now occupied by the Post Office. To the right of this picture the very large building is Flower Pot Methodist Chapel - this was sadly destroyed by fire during the 1970's. the area now being occupied by a car park which takes its name from the former chapel. From the Paddy Bradley collection.

Looking to the south west but slightly to the right of the previous picture. The reference being the former Flowerpot Methodist Chapel - the large building to the left of this view. In the foreground can be seen, bottom right, Drump Road bridge. A bracket signal is clearly visible. In the distance the clear expanse of grass is that of the Fairfield, Coach Lane being beyond. Classic Traction at
Westbury
Guy Vincent
Classic traction at Westbury today (9th) with 37059 and 37038 returning empty stock to Eastleigh from yesterday's Taunton-York & return charter.     After running round the coaches they departed on time and headed off south up Dilton Marsh bank towards Warminster and the former Southern Region.  It's always nice to see these classic British Railways designed locos working on the main line almost 60 years after they first appeared. One wonders whether the second generation imported designs will last as long?

   Regards,  Guy Vincent.
Many thanks Guy - smashing pictures - a super spread.
