Keith, Roger,
You might recall that my good friend, Brian Oldham, who volunteers at Liskeard Museum, gave me a picture to identify, entitled The Flying Dutchman at Blackbridge.  This was a crack Great Western express in the closing decades of the broad gauge.  Blackbridge was a name that we were not familiar with, but we have since narrowed it down to the footbridge to the west of Moorswater viaduct.

Here is the picture again, together with the equivalent position (more or less) with Clan Line speeding past this evening.

Much has changed in the intervening 130 years !

Best wishes, Peter

Many thanks to Peter and Brian Oldham

Golant Delight
Graig Munday

I usually enjoy the Golden 8 Weeks, around the longest day in June, but the weeks leading up to 21st have been very disappointing. Cloud has shrouded the County with only a few glimpses of sunshine. I see that is set to change this week, which create a sunny Mazey Day - a feat not seen for some years now.

I was advised the clay empties from Carne Point may be ready early last Friday so hoped for a high tide, break of sun departure. The sun was hazy to say the least, but it did appear as the squealing of flanges could be heard leaving Fowey. My friend Ian's fields stayed lit in the background which was a good omen. As the train blew up for the slipway crossing at Golant the train passed through in fine evening light, and a tick on the bucket list was crossed off!

All the best,  Craig
An excellent shot, perfect timing and planning, many thanks.

The relaying at Aish must be a big job. For the third week the 18216X04 Fairwater Yard - Aish has run this time with 66522(in Shanks livery) leading with 66615 on the rear.

The Bristol Docks tug and Fowey Docks Connection
Andrew Jones

On a memorable recent visit to Bristol Docks, I was puzzled by a name plate on the engine of the tug boat ‘John King’, which is now preserved and gives rides around the Bristol Basin. The chief engineer showed me around the engine room, which is compact and noisy.
Whilst in discussion it occurred to me that I had come across the Lister Blackstone ER6 unit, installed in ‘John King’ before.
Wading through my rail tour photographs, I came across, (and I stand to be corrected) the Cornish Branch Line Rail tour of the 20th November 1983, which if I am not mistaken shows a photograph of Class 10  D3452, in a sorry state at Fowey.
This is where the connection was made, because the Lister Blackstone ER6 was also installed in this Class 08 variant.  Normally Class 08 shunters were fitted with English Electric 6KT units.
D3452 is now preserved on The Bodmin railway, one of four Class 10’s still in existence. It unfortunately has a wheel alignment problem and is restricted to use in the yard.
Incidentally I have included a semaphore signal, which shows that they were not restricted to railway use.
This one protects the Princes Street Swing Bridge adjacent the marvellous M Shed Museum.
This whole area is a delight with working harbour cranes, (which you can climb up ), the preserved Bristol Harbour Railway and numerous waterfront cafes which make for a brilliant day out. Everyone is very friendly and the staff on the ‘John King’ could not do more, to be helpful and knowledgeable.

Many thanks Andrew for your diligent research, your very interesting article and your photographs.

'Clan Line' to Cornwall Today

Craig Munday writes
A super day with Clan Line on Sunday 17th June 2018 working the season's first Cornishman Railtour to Par. The weather was grim, apart from a heaven sent splash of sunshine whilst the loco was at St Blazey and Par in the evening.

The train was operated by DBC on this occasion, and Steve Matthews and Vince Henderson drove the loco in the Duchy, conducted by our very own St Blazey's Mark Bartlett who was in his element on the footplate. (Mark wearing the cap).

The road approach to Dock Gate 20 for Southampton Freightliner Depot, situated between Redbridge and Millbrook is along First Avenue so what better name for the bridge?  From this vantage point Mick House has taken on several occasions a number of views looking east and west.  It's almost a case as 'spot the difference'  however you will find several prominent features appear each time.  Many thanks indeed to Mick for his repeated visits and sharing these views with us.

The H.S.T. Diversions on the Southern
Roger Winnen

An opportunity to photograph HSTs on the Southern Route was taken on 14th June 2018 before their replacement by the IET Trains later in the year. An upgrade at Cowley Bridge Junction, Exeter to prevent further flooding, resulted in the the lines east of Exeter St David's being closed between 12th-14th June 2018 with bus replacement services running to Taunton connecting into mainline services and to Barnstaple. However a limited service of Great Western Trains, one every two hours in both directions ran via the Southern to Yeovil Junction, then Yeovil Pen Mill to Castle Cary and London Paddington. This caused long delays throughout the day to both South Western Railway Trains and the Great Western Services and had knock on effects.
Many thanks to David Tozer for keeping me informed by the bush telegraph updating me of the movements during the day.

Picture
180614a The 13.25 service from Exeter St David's to London Waterloo was cancelled owing to the trains late arrival. The train however commenced its journey from Exeter Central where the incoming train due at 12.40 had terminated running nearly an hour late. Passengers were conveyed by bus between St David's and Central Station. The service is shown at Pinhoe awaiting the HST to clear the single line from Honiton. Copyright Roger Winnen

Please see attach a photo of 66013 crossing St Levans Viaduct (Keyham) with today's 1506 St Blazey-Exeter clay.  14th June 2018

Also, I note with interest the photos on the webpage of 34007's arrival on the Plym Valley in 1981.  I was fortunate enough to be a participant on a photo charter on the morning of 34007's last day in steam on the Mid Hants in March 2016. I was last on the Mid Hants a couple of weeks ago and 34007 is looking a bit forlorn again stored in the headshunt at Ropley.  I include a shot of 34007 'going out in style' on that charter!

Further shots of GB Railfreight's 59003 Yeoman Highlander 'at home' (sort of) on an aggregate-derived working, although this job brings in stone from the Midlands to the south west and not, as is more usual, away from the local quarries.

Let's hope this loco remains in our part of the country and can be seen alongside some of it's former class members.

1985

Part 1
With the imminent arrival of a thumper unit again in Devon this Saturday here is a very nostalgic look at the 'Gunnislake Goliath' railtour on 21st December 1985. Run by Hertfordshire Railtours, the tour visited Friary then Plymstock before moving on to Saltash and finally crossing the Tamar a second time, this time to Gunnislake. An unusual feature of this tour was the use of police to stop passengers alighting at Plymouth Friary or Plymstock. Two police officers travelled on the train between Exeter and Plymouth and were backed up by patrol cars on the ground. These units were not unknown in Devon having worked the Saturdays only Brighton to Exeter St Davids in the 1970s being replaced by 33s after April 1977. Quite a sight thumping away up the bank  to Exeter Central on the return !.

Part 1 features DEMU 1032 on the leg to Plymstock over the now closed freight line crossing Laira Bridge. This is now an excellent cycle path and is featured on other pages on this website.

Part 2 will show the railtour in Saltash and at Plymouth station.

Regards
Clive Smith        Many thanks indeed Clive  - we look forward to Part 2.

Welcome back to
59003 'Yeoman Highlander'
Guy Vincent

Westbury has seen a welcome return from former Yeoman class 59 59003 'Yeoman Highlander'. New to the UK with 59001, 002 and 004 in January 1986 the loco was sold by Mendip Rail in 1997 and went to Germany for further work but was then purchased by GB Railfreight and returned to the UK in late 2014. Since then it has seen sporadic use in the Midlands and Yorkshire but has now migrated south and is reportedly to be based at Eastleigh where it should begin to appear on routes it covered from new.  This morning it came over from Eastleigh to Westbury to work the 'as required' 6M40 1159 Westbury-Stud Farm empty ballast box wagons.  Sadly a retimed HST in P3 prevented any close-up views of the loco as it ran into the yard. Here are two shots of 'Highlander' (still named) at Westbury and passing Melksham.  The challenge now is to photograph this one alongside on of the other early class members.        Welcome back.

Diesels to the Seaside
Andrew Triggs & Martin Duff

A few views from the WSR “diesels to the seaside” event over the weekend for your consideration on the CRS pages.  Definitely a weekend of two halves, weather and performance wise.  On Saturday, a carriage defect in traffic had to be attended to and caused significant delay while the affected coach was removed at Minehead.  I worked two afternoon turns in Blue Anchor signal box, Friday and Saturday – having passed out for the box in 1996, I mainly work other boxes these days, so it was a pleasure to work the box with its wheel operated level crossing.  The sun was reluctant to put in much of an appearance until early evening Saturday.  Colleague and friend Craig Munday visited, coffee and biscuits were served between trains – always good to catch up with him, and eat biscuits.

The Deltic and Class 50 are seen side by side at Minehead at breakfast time on Saturday, 45041 is seen approaching Blue Anchor late evening Saturday, then again at Williton (note the new semaphore signalling at the Taunton end) on Sunday.  Earlier on Sunday I recorded a pair of Class 20’s leaving Doniford, also the Class 50 at Watchet in full sun.  A great weekend, and thanks to Andrew Triggs for doing the driving up and down the branch to get to the various photographic locations on Sunday.
Owing to the large number of photographs of this Gala already on our website we have found it necessary to reduce the number slightly on this occasion
Many Thanks

Riding the Rails of Devon
Roger Winnen

This outdoor event was planned many months ago where we intended to cover much of the railways of Devon.  However it was realised a couple of months ago that steam was coming to Devon on that day, so the timetable based around that. We travelled up to Dawlish Warren to spend some time on the sea wall before going on to Exeter to see the steam, then hopefully running ahead to photo the steam at Newton Abbot.  Eventually the steam was reported 50 late at Exeter, so an emergency timetable came into being.
We departing Exeter at 11.58 to Paignton to see the arrival of the steam and then onto Churston for the engines turning before returning back to Exeter and Newton Abbot for the ttains return run.
Further delays were encountered on our return journey at Par where a lady was stretched out on the platform as our train pulled in.  An ambulance was called and assistance was given by the train crew and passengers, only to find out that she was worse for wear being on the bottle, delaying us by nearly one hour.
