HST 'in a pickle'
Dennis Clarke & Mark Lynam

I was at Teignmouth and Totnes today for the West Coast Railways move and the daytime run of the sleeper to Reading.

On my way back, I notices a HST set in the sidings at Truro.  I’ve not seen that before so took a couple of photos through the train window.

I’ve also enclosed a photo of the errant 57305 at Long Rock the day before, where it seemed to be fine.  I’m not sure exactly why the Night Riviera failed though.

The locomotive was declared a failure later that evening and the up 'sleeper' was worked by an IET. 57312 recovered the errant loco and stock to Reading on 20.05.2025 as shown in Marks photographs earlier in todays 'news'. 19.05.2025, copyright Dennis Clarke.
And Mark Lynam writes:

Today a castle set made a rare visit to Truro Yard due to problems with the powercars, it worked 2P16 1315 Penzance to Truro then went into Truro yard, where according to the signalling maps its still sat now (8pm).

These were taken about 16.30 this afternoon.

Recent Pics - B&H and Swanage
Steve Clark

I recently had a couple days out away from Cornwall including what will now be an Annual pilgrimage back to Dorset  for the Swanage Railway's Diesel Gala. En route I visited the Berks and Hants for some Stone train action and I was not disappointed with 16 trains seen between 10am and 5pm including a pair of 56's and two Class 60's. The Diesel Gala was once again blessed with glorious weather and on the Saturday the timetable ran faultlessly so I filled my Boots. Here are some of the highlights from my 2 days away

Chelfham Viaduct Open Weekend
Simon Hickman

I couldn’t see any pictures of the Chelfham Viaduct open weekend on your excellent website yet, so thought I’d send you some. I’m sure you will have better contributions, but if not, these at least give a record.

The weekend was a joint event between the Historic Railways Estate, part of National Highways and owners of the viaduct, and the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway who own the Chelfham Station site and have ambitions to reopen the route.

The last Crosscountry
Joseph Birchall

Today marked the end of the early morning Voyager to Edinburgh, departing Truro at 07:07, which I have gone out to see most weekdays since the timetable change on the 22nd of May 2023.  Whilst waiting for it from my usual position, a ‘150’ passed, on its way to Truro, presumably to help with the Falmouth services.  I have attached some pictures, with the morning sun illuminating the ‘150’, both the ‘150’ and ‘221’ side by side, and a close up of the ‘221’ itself.

A unique opportunity!
Get up-close with 'Tornado'
at St. Blazey Turntable
With thanks to MPower Kernow.

With many thanks to the team at MPower Kernow, we are pleased to be able to offer one lucky individual an exclusive opportunity to visit an area of St. Blazey T&RSD during the turning of 60163 'Tornado' on Sunday 25th May 2025.

You will be able to visit a safe area within the confines of St. Blazey yard, off-limits to the public, and you'll have an up-close, front row seat for the turning of the magnificent 4-6-2 locomotive on St. Blazeys historic turntable. There will be many opportunities to capture photographs which are normally impossible.

You will also have the opportunity to visit the workshops of MPower and to meet some of the workforce, where you'll see the work which is going on behind-the-scenes to turn the site into an engineering facility.

MPower Kernow are currently raising funds to purchase a community defibrillator.

If you'd like a chance to visit, please email: [email protected] with a donation amount, no matter how big or small, you'd be willing to offer. Please include your contact telephone number.

The 'bidder' with the highest donation offer will be contacted on Wednesday 21st May at 13:00, and they will be given 6 hours to make a payment via bank transfer. If no payment is received, we will in turn move onto the second highest bidder, and so on.

The winner will need to become a member of the Cornwall Railway Society if they are not already (£10.00 annually). They will need safety boots, a hard hat and high vis vest (although we can help with the latter two). Visitors must be over 18 and must be able to walk unassisted over uneven terrain/ballast. The visit will start at 13:00 on 25.05.2025, with the locomotive turning expected to commence at around 14:00.

We are very grateful to the team at MPower for allowing us to offer this exciting opportunity to our members and readers, and we hope that we can make a generous contribution to their fundraiser.

You can find out more about MPower Kernow via their website - click here.

The 2E26 will be HST for just two more evenings. Next week it will be extended to Birmingham and be a Voyager. Burngullow 'Castles'
Andrew & Diane Jones

I spent a scorching few hours at Burngullow junction today Thursday 15th May 2025.

There is very little shade at this location but worth the heat to capture three castle sets on their way to Penzance.

It been a while since I was last here, the silos now dilapidated and little freight activity. I assume that the passing loop with its solitary signal gets some use but this once busy site is a sad reflection on the under utilisation of our rail freight facilities.

Why oh why did the Cornwall Metro not use the line from St Dennis junction, with only a short distance of track to reinstate and opening up the clay villages to a new rail service!

37240 back in the west
Steve Widdowson

After acting as the support loco for Saturday 10's Vintage Trains railtour to Plymouth, 37240 was again the westcountry on 13.05, in use to return steam loco 45596 from its recent visit to the West Somerset Railway steam Gala.

Below are a few pics of 37240 with 45596 Bahamas as they pause at Worcester Shrub Hill for water whilst working 5Z17, the 1010 Bishops Lydeard to Keighley & Wvlr.

37240 - in a past life
Tony Shore

With some local interest stirring in 37240 following Saturdays railtour, I have dug out some photographs of it from 14-09-1990, whilst it was working the 16.38 Aberdeen - Dyce. After arriving at Dyce, the 37 was run round the stock ready to work to Montrose. A commuter service from Aberdeen. May go well on the web site.

Many thanks indeed Tony - the opposite end of the country to our normal coverage, but very interesting to see 37240 ‘back in the day’.

Sadly the engine was derailed at West Ealing in August 1989,after vandals placed material on the track and it was scrapped at Old Oak Common in October 1989. Thanks, best wishes, Michael Forward.

NINETEEN SIXTY FOUR – PART 43
Day Trip to Bude - 23.05.1964
Michael L. Roach

In steam days I made many rail trips where I was away for up to 18 hours, and sometimes even longer. I also made many day and half-day trips wholly by car where the objective was to photograph trains in the countryside between stations. In this I was inspired by the landscape photographs of expert photographers like Peter Gray, P.M. Alexander, J.F. Russell-Smith and later by Trevor Owen and I wanted to emulate them. I never had a formal bucket-list of places to visit, but there were places, particularly in Mid-Wales, where I waited years to get there and photograph a train in stunning scenery. It was not easy because these places were hundreds of miles from home, and some of the lines had just three passenger trains a day. Thirdly there were the hybrid trips where a day of car travel for lineside photography was interrupted by parking up at a railway station and taking a return trip along a line that was still steam worked. The 23 May 1964 was just such a day.

I headed north from Plymouth to the rail lines west of Okehampton. First stop was near Hatherleigh to capture the 10.38am Halwill to Torrington on film; this was the first of just two passenger trains a day over this part of the line. Because the train was booked to stop at Hatherleigh Station for several minutes I was able to  see it on both sides of Hatherleigh. The photographs will be shown later in the year. I then retreated several miles to the summit of the whole ex-Southern route from Plymouth to Exeter south of Meldon Junction for the only time ever at this location. The objective was the 11.10am Plymouth to Brighton through train which turned out to be hauled by 34009 Lyme Regis of Nine Elms Shed with eight coaches. Earlier in the year the engine off the up Brighton returned with the down Brighton from Exeter but whether it did that day I do not know.

I then turned my attention to having a train trip from Okehampton to Bude and back. I went out on the 1.18pm off Okehampton which took 61 minutes for the 31 miles; returning on the 3.11pm off Bude. By the time I got to Bude the rain had set in so after taking two photos of the train engine 31812 I had to abandon photography for the day. In view of this I have included some photos of Okehampton to Bude trains later in 1964.

80036 has arrived at Halwill Junction with the 12 10 from Okehampton on 24.10.1964. Although the original timetable had been issued to apply from 15 June 1964 to 13 June 1965 there had been so many changes in September 1964 that a 127-page Supplement was issued. The Supplement introduced the 24-hour clock to the Western Region and this was how the train times were written in the timetable, which commenced on 7 September 1964. Copyright Michael L. Roach.

More of D1015
Guy Vincent, Euan Currie, Jack Burchill & Paul Barlow

From Guy V:

A long-held wish was finally realised on Saturday 10th May when I was able to see a 'Western' in BR blue with a full yellow end emerge from one of the most notable and recognisable icons of Brunel's Great Western Railway, the ornate western end of Box Tunnel.

Disappointingly the balustrade on the left hand side above the portal has been removed due to deterioration and awaits restoration.

As it turned out the last thing I wanted was bright sunshine due to the alignment of the line in relation to the sun's position but that is exactly what was on offer. This is an ideal late afternoon spot for photography on sunny days.  Another major issue was the dense vegetation that now exists meaning you need to be above the line to see the tunnel or track.

D1015 emerged from the tunnel at 1024am, just 6 minutes later than scheduled and the sight was a brief reminder of the last few railtours worked by sister D1023 in late 1976 and 1977.

I've had to do some editing but the end result I find pleasing as it has the look and character of a 1970s era transparency print rather than high-tech 21st century digital imaging!

A second image looking west as 37240 passes the site of the former Box Mill Lane Halt (closed 3rd January 1965).  Beyond is the 175yd long Middle Hill Tunnel with its almost as impressive classic portal design.    See how the height inside the tunnel is much lower than the entrance.

All the photos of D1015 published on CRS yesterday (11th) were a real treat to see with some classic 'Western' locations from yesteryear included. I think this train should be ranked alongside those classic tours from the 1970s as the Westerns ended their BR careers.

Getting a 'Thousand' through to Buckfastleigh was no mean feat and can hopefully be repeated in the future.
