Hot off the press
Trackless Okehampton
Driver Alan Peters
The following pictures were received early in the morning being sent around about midnight on the 10th May. We are very grateful to Alan for his 'on the spot' photographs - an invaluable contact for us.

The strange sight of trackless Okehampton on 10th May 2021, this was the biggest fear years ago when lines were closed and the track was lifted, happily new track is being laid for the reopening of the Dartmoor Line when it joins the national network

The shot above of 56302 'PECO - The Railway Modeller' from Tors Road bridge giving the impression that the train is heading for Meldon Quarry on 10th May 2021, the train is in fact stabled with the NTC machine on the rear in preparation for relaying through Okehampton station, a lineside shot that is normally difficult for me as usually I am working the train!

Very many thanks Alan.

Very interesting stock move at
Daveys Bridge
Clive Smith

Picture
37688 passes Daveys Bridge just east of Ivybridge station with the 5Z37 12.45 Crewe - Laira stock move containing Locomotive Services Ltd ex-East Midlands Trains mark 3s. Alas the sun did not play ball with me on an evening with too many clouds going by.

Lots of conjecture as to what they will be doing whilst the majority of GWR IETs are sidelined with the investigation into cracks that were found in the fleet. GWR is sourcing trains from wherever they can and the rumours are that this set will form a 2+7 HST  with two GWR power cars. We will see. An interesting fortnight or so beckons on GWR.

Regards
Clive Smith
Very many thanks Clive.

Cross Country Shuttle
Swindon
Guy Vincent

Cross-Country HST with power cars 43239 and 43207 just prior to and departing Swindon with a special 1Z29 1733 shuttle service to Bristol Temple Meads. This set was used for several return trips during the day.  Both power cars were originally delivered new to the Western Region in 1976 but were later redeployed away from their original areas of operation, in 43239's case as long ago as 1982 when it went to the St Pancras-Sheffield route with several other WR PC's.

Funeral train at
Chipping Sodbury
Guy and Cathy Vincent

The funeral convoy heading west at Dodington Road overbridge, Chipping Sodbury.   57305 hauling 91129, 91113, 91126 and 91102 as 0Q76 0745 Doncaster Belmont - Newport Docks Sims Group. Photos taken by Cathy Vincent.  We had no choice but to use this bridge due to 'map issues' (lack of) and being very pushed for time due to the late running of the train and my book-on time today!  At least these images are unique!

We noticed that 91126 and 91102 still bore nameplates, 'Darlington Hippodrome' and 'City of York'.   Hopefully these will be retrieved rather than scrapped and sold in aid of a suitable railway charity.

These locos still seem (in my mind at least) to be relatively new and up to date but in fact they are over 30 years old and have covered millions of miles.  I remember 91005 on display at Bristol Bath Road / St Phillips Marsh depot open day on June 29 1991 but other than that for obvious reasons they have never been seen on the Western Region.

Guy Vincent

Class 91's
- the final journey
Peter Griffiths

Hello CRS
I have enjoyed your website for many years. A long-exiled Plymouthian, living near Malmesbury in Wiltshire.
Thought you may be interested in an unusual event today (10th May), hopefully just within the CRS area. Four ex-LNER Class 91's being towed to South Wales for scrapping.
Their final visit to Wiltshire as well as probably the first.
Photos were taken at Rodbourne, a couple of miles south of Malmesbury.

Written yesterday - 8th May 2021
By now you've probably heard that the 'new' Hitachi 800 class trains are being withdrawn because of a hair-line crack.

So, i spent about 30 minutes down at Swindon Station this morning.
One of the station staff told me that there were no bus replacement services.
Kind regards,

Quote courtesy Wikipedia - Coombe Junction Halt railway station serves the villages of Coombe and Lamellion  near Liskeard. It is situated on theLooe Valley line and operated by GWR. All trains on this line have to reverse at Coombe Junction, but very few continue the short distance into the platform to allow passengers to alight or join the train.
With 26 passenger entries and exits between April 2014 and March 2015, it was the second-least used station in Great Britain, behind Shippea Hill. It is one of only two stations on the National Rail network to have the designation 'halt'.
Thanks for the memories Roger.

Portishead Railway Group News
Peter Maliphant
Dear Member,  It’s been a while since we were last in touch, so your committee hopes that you have safely negotiated all the challenges of the past year or so. We hope to resume committee and member meetings later in the year, most likely in time for our AGM in November.

Meanwhile, you’ll be pleased to hear that work on reopening the line has carried on unabated and everything is going well.

As you may know, the DCO (Development Consent Order) was submitted in December 2019 and it completed the examination stage in April 2021. PRG recently met with James Willcock and the MetroWest team for a progress update and here’s the latest news:
  • The Planning Inspectorate are now preparing their report and this will go to the Secretary of State on July 19th.
  • The Secretary of State will take three months to make his decision, which should be announced towards the end of October.
  • The full business case for the Portishead line then has to be approved by North Somerset Council. This cannot occur until after the Secretary of State's decision has been announced.
  • Meanwhile, the MetroWest team will continue work on various outstanding matters and on procuring the contractor to carry out the line’s construction.
  • Once the full business case is approved in November/December, the Department for Transport will then take six months to sign off the project, including obtaining HM Treasury approval, in around July 2022.
  • Only then can North Somerset Council award the construction contract, so construction is unlikely to get started before early 2023.
  • Construction will take 12-18 months, so train services are likely to commence in the second half of 2024.
It’s understandable that these timescales feel frustrating slow, but it’s important to understand and explain to people that this is the system that all publicly funded transport infrastructure projects have to go through, regardless of who is actually in government. There is nothing that North Somerset Council, MetroWest or the project team, who continue to be working hard to deliver our line, can do to speed up the process.

Regards,
Peter Maliphant, Membership Secretary, Portishead Railway Group

Return to Okehampton
Driver Alan Peters
My first turn of duty back on the footplate following my operation, this was on the Dartmoor Line and it was interesting to see how things are progressing. Colas Rail Freight 56302 'Peco - The Railway Modeller' has been hired to Network Rail basically as a super shunter to load the concrete sleeper trains and shunt them train down to the NTC machine (New Track Construction) for relaying of the line. When I arrived for my shift the locomotive and loaded train of sleepers was already in Okehampton station ready to push back or in railway terminology 'propel' to the work site. The NTC machine was working the Okehampton side of Sampford Courtenay station where the class 56 is pictured at Lydcott Farm Bridge on the newly laid track, once the train of sleepers is connected to the NTC machine the locomotive returns light to Okehampton to collect the empty sleeper wagons in stabled in platform 2 (the old down platform) where the shunter is seen releasing the wagon brakes in preparation to shunt across to Platform 3 (the up platform) The train is then drawn out right up under Tors Road Bridge to clear the ground frame before setting back into the station for reloading on the 5th May 2021

Whilst the concrete sleepers are loaded onto the wagons at Okehampton this gave an opportunity to take some pictures of Colas Rail 56302 'Peco - The Railway Modeller' at Okehampton with the sun shinning on the 5th May 2021, however the station remains closed to public access although the view from the footbridge shows the Dartmoor Railway Supporters Association are busying themselves getting ready to open the museum to the public later this month. It is now envisaged that the track will remain in platform 2 (The old Down line) but only for aesthetic reasons at least this is better than the original plan was to remove it. The hired in crane is seen loading the sleepers stacked in the old goods yard, this will eventually be cleared for a modern car park with lighting and CCTV to modern standards.

A busy day!

Guy Vincent at Upton Scudamore  and Freshford
GB Railfreight's recent European acquisition 66791, still carrying the former Beacon Rail livery applied when the loco was based in Sweden, approaching Upton Scudamore north of Warminster with the daily afternoon trip working from Eastleigh East Yard to Westbury, a duty often covered by currently absent 59003. Today's load consisted of some track panels and a Plasser and Theurer Crane.

66791 was delivered new in November 2002 to HSBC Rail Ltd, London. Numbered 66404 it was hired to CargoNet AS, Oslo and used in Sweden.   From March 2009 ownership was transferred to Beacon Rail Leasing Ltd, London.  By 2014 the number was preceded by a capital letter 'T'.  The lease on the loco was taken on by GB Railfreight in 2019 and it was delivered via Immingham Docks in June of that year.   Modifications for use in the UK were made to the loco at Longport, Stoke on Trent and following further attention at Doncaster Roberts Road depot 66791 entered service in October 2020.  The loco did carry nameplates 'Neil Bennett' but these are now missing.

Welcome back Alan
Alan Peters

Hi,
As some might know I have been off work following an operation and have now been given the green light by the doctor to return to work, the first day back involved getting a van in preparation for my first proper shift at Okehampton catching the train from my local station, the 15:17 Par to London Paddington Service formed of a GWR 802 IET which is seen arriving at Par for just a handful of waiting passengers or should that be customers. Unfortunately the trains are still very quiet even with the partial lifting of lockdown and as can be seen I virtually had the carriage to myself, well to Plymouth anyway. Although the IET trains interior are light and airy they are perhaps one of the most uncomfortable trains to travel on with rock hard seats that I don't envy anyone who has to travel any great distance on one, in fact I was glad to get off at Exeter St Davids and in hindsight I should have caught the later train comprised of a HST 'Castle Set' for a little more comfort over time. Once at Exeter I was able to collect the van that had been left for me after taking a quick snap of the depot behind the fuel point which is out of view from the station itself, several class 150 units were stabled including 150 207 and unidentified class 158 on the 4th May 2021, before the drive back down the A30 to Cornwall.

New locos from old
Westbury
Guy Vincent

Received 4th May 2021.  A very rare short-notice working through Westbury this afternoon.     A friend kindly told me that  0O69 1100 Longport-Eastleigh Works had been re-routed at short notice from Didcot North Junction to run via Foxhall Jcn, Swindon, Melksham and Westbury due to an overnight loss of signalling between Reading and Basingstoke on the train's booked route.    This working consisted of GBRF locos 66704 69001 and 66794.     69001 is the former 56031, a long-time resident of Westbury (1982-1993) when it worked the stone traffic from the nearby Somerset Quarries.  This was the first class 56 loco to be built in the UK in May 1977 at Doncaster Works and from 01.09.1983 to 30.05.1996 carried the name 'Merehead'.  Now owned by GB Railfreight the loco has been totally rebuilt and re-equipped with a GM power unit and once cosmetic attention has been completed at Eastleigh it should enter traffic and give many more years service.

Also in the group was another GM product, loco number 29005 / 266 029-8.  This was new in 2003 to HSBC Rail and hired to ERS Railways in the Netherlands, numbered 6608. It was sold to Beacon Rail in 2009 and leased to Heavy Haul Power International (HHPI) for use chiefly in Germany. It carried the 29005 number (above) and was named  'Ted Gaffney' who was the CEO of Beacon Rail Leasing from 2012-2019. Its final work abroad was for Crossrail Benelux prior to being acquired for GBRF here in the UK, arriving at Immingham Docks in September 2020.  Following conversion and fitting-out for use on Network Rail this loco will become 66794 and is to be reliveried at Eastleigh, hence today's move.

Two recent views of Wilton Junction looking towards Warminster / Tisbury. From left to right the lines are Down Exeter,  Up Exeter,  Up Westbury,  Down Westbury and (R) Quidhampton Siding.  The Western Region Sectional Appendix likes to be different and refers to the Westbury route lines as Up and Down Salisbury!

History

Wilton Junction (132m33ch GWR / 85m37ch L&SWR ) was created in 1973 when the former GWR route into Salisbury was truncated at Quidhampton chalk pit and to the west of the station.  The GWR lines were slewed to join the L&SWR main line thus creating the junction.  A spur of the former GWR line remained to serve the pit, this was from a ground frame at 132m 25ch to 132m 54ch with east-facing sidings at the far end.  The intermediate or middle section of the GWR route was sold off and redeveloped in the late 1980s to become 'Pullman Drive', a modern housing estate that can be seen from trains on the remaining main line.  In 1992-3 the remaining stub at the Salisbury end was reinstated as a headshunt for the new DMU depot that now occupies the site of the GWR station and yard.  This line terminates close by a public footpath crossing at the end of Gramshaw Road at 84m22ch.

My understanding is that Quidhampton chalk pit, aka 'Broadlands Quarry' and unused since 2009, is to become a disposal site for spoil from the HS2 construction works. This will be brought in by rail hence the need to refurbish and modernise the points and controls at Wilton Junction.   Working Timetable paths have been in place for several years for these workings so it may be that they will soon be fulfilled.

A scheme to build a four-platform 'Wilton Parkway' station north and west of the junction serving both routes has been 'cooking' for several years but no physical work has yet been undertaken.  This was recently mentioned in the Salisbury Journal (March 10th 2021).

Qudhampton - a sort of  Railtour

I well remember my only ever 'excursion' onto the Quidhampton branch which happened on the blustery morning of  Saturday January 2nd 1988.  High winds overnight brought down a tree between Wilton and Wishford and this was run into by 33017 heading the first northbound working of the day, 2V56 0550 Portsmouth Harbour-Cardiff Central.   Passing the site of the incident en-route I arrived at Salisbury at 0926 on the (undelayed) 1O32 0630 Cardiff-Portsmouth  and found 33017 with its train had already been brought back to the Station, less than 2 hours after the incident had occurred.  The following northbound 2V58 0658 Portsmouth-Cardiff (with loco 33022) was still being held so I boarded and it duly departed at 0934, 65 minutes late.  At Wilton Junction the train stopped and, with a handsignalman in place to operate the ground frame and give appropriate orders, 33022 then reversed 2V58 onto the Quidhampton branch, venturing approximately 500 yards before stopping.  When authorised by the handsignaller the train then set off  'wrong line'  up the 'down Westbury' line as far as Wylye ground frame where under the watchful eye of a further handsignalman the 'up Westbury' line was rejoined. During this part of the journey the site of the fallen tree was noted where clearance work was coming to an end.  I recorded an arrival time in Bristol Temple Meads of 11.00am, some  80 minutes late but with the service having run.    Would such arrangements be put into place today I ask?    I'll leave readers to answer that one!!
You will find a handy map if you click here and select and zoom as necessary. http://www.railmaponline.com
A very sincere thank you to Guy for his time and trouble.

Starcross, Yeovil Jct.
                  & Bodmin Parkway

A miscellany by Andrew & John Vines
Dear Keith,
Here's three more of Dad's pictures taken in 1970/71.  Two are details of infrastructure at Starcross - the up starter signal, and the down platform shelter, while the Yeovil Jn picture shows a 'Warship' leaving on a Waterloo train, with gas lanterns in evidence on 'barley sugar' posts.  The enormous bracket signal looks to be at the limit for such structures before a gantry becomes necessary.
Finally, when we last corresponded I mentioned that visiting Cornwall as a teenager during the 'Western' years was for me like arriving in heaven.  You replied at the time that heaven was rather chilly and wet, so just to reassure you that my view wasn't too 'rose-tinted', a picture I took (rather than Dad), showing ' D1973 Western Bulwark' arriving at Bodmin Road on a 'lovely' summer's morning in August 1974.  The loco was on a relief service from Penzance to Paddington, and in its last fortnight of service before joining the scrap line at Laira.
Best wishes
Andrew

Buckfastleigh Station Part 1
Roger Winnen

With no services running until later in May I decided with the fine weather advertised to visit Buckfastleigh Satation for one of opendays advertised.
However on arrival at Totnes by train and catching the Stagecoach No 88 bus to Buckfastleigh the weather had changed to heavy rain which ruined the day, sheltering under many trees at Buckfastleith to stay dry. It was however an interesting visit.

Hi Keith,
Another full week of nights has rolled around. The bonus now is the pale blue skies to accompany either end as we fast approach the joy of light mornings and evenings. A selection of shots from the week, including the up working of 802025 Captain Sir Moore during its Captain Tom 100, 100 stations in 40 hours challenge. The return is seen at St Austell working the 12.15 Penzance to Paddington.
