Trains in early May
Craig Munday
Hi Keith
Hope everyone is keeping well, despite the dreadful, but necessary  lockdown dragging on.
Here are some pictures taken on duty in early May.
66012 took up the local CDAs working, a new number on the train for a good few years. It is seen at Golant, Par and St Blazey working the empties back to St Blazey.
It was then pictured on the 2nd (Saturday) performing the wagons shunt around the yard. After this the empty wagons were tripped up to Goonbarrow, and the loco is seen arriving back at a rather over grown Middleway with the short signal SB9 "off" for the down loop. This signal sees seldom use.
Enjoy, best regards Craig Munday.

I have just seen Roger Winnen’s photos of a couple of Peak diesels at Dainton in July 1977. The second one surprised me because it carried more nose-end fittings than usual for a ‘flush-fronted’ Peak – see the first photo. An online search revealed that a few early ones modified this way such as 46016/49 retained these fittings but the unusually small marker lights and exposed boiler tank filler on the roof identify the Peak in Roger’s photo as 45071.
This loco suffered serious collision damage at Bridgwater in October 1974 while still numbered 125 (sadly the guard travelling in the rear cab was killed) and repairs at Derby Works took so long it became the last BR locomotive of any type to receive its TOPS number in December 1975, as well as the first Peak to appear with flush ends.
Despite the effort and expense involved in putting it back into traffic, 45071 was withdrawn relatively early, in July 1981.

Best regards,
Neil Phillips
Many Thanks Neil for this update on information re the above photo

Trenance Viaduct
Richard Curtis

Whilst out on my permitted exercise this evening I happened to be walking past Trenance viaduct when the 19.22 ex Newquay heading for Par went by. It was interesting to hear how quiet the unit was going over the viaduct and then when on the Tolcarne junction side it got much louder with the click-a-Dee clack over the track joints in track that probably goes back to steam days. Once out of ear shot all that could then be heard was the roar of the lion at the zoo. Regards, Richard Curtis

In my wanderings around Crewkerne, I stopped at a crossing point some 400 yards east of the station in time to see an Exeter to Salisbury working ( 1Z26 ) led by  159012.   At the station, there is a very noticeable dip in the track, accentuated when using a telephoto lens.  The train seems to sag in the middle!

Stay safe,  Bill

Youtube

If you would like to take a look there is some footage taken in 2019 of an exploration of the Helston Railway route then click below. Other than starting and finishing at Prospidnick and views of the Cober viaduct in it's overgrown state one is uncertain of exactly where the camera operator was. A pity that it lacks positioning information - it is amazing how big the trackbed trees are. Nice shots taken on a journey from Prospidnick to Truthall Halt. It is worth taking a look but be ready to fast forward.   https://www.google.com/search?q=youtube+Exploring+the+old+helston+railway&oq=yout&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i57j35i39j0l4j69i60.9007j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Hi Roger

Thanks for your call yesterday and its quite amazing to think that there were another two regular contributors to the CRS website there at Plymouth Station on that day more than 60 years ago. This is what Adrian King wrote to me,
"Just had to drop you a line regarding your continuing article in the CRS magazine which I received today. ................................... The thing that really got to me, I was on holiday in Plymouth on the dates you mentioned, in fact I realise that the day  we must have travelled back to South Wales was Saturday 8th August 1959. It can only be that date as we always went down for a fortnight on a Saturday and back on a Saturday the last few days of July and the first full week in August."
 Roger Winnen wrote
On Saturday 8th August 1959 I travelled to Plymouth with a friend, on arriving we were greeted by 6860 Aberporth Grange off the rails at Plymouth Station, County of Cornwall also a  Penzance engine was standing by to drag her back on track.
Money was tight in those days so prior going to Laira Shed we visited the Refreshment Room on Platform 7 for a pasty I believe it was 8d and a wax carton of orange Kio-ra at 6d. By that time we only had money left for the bus fare from Alexandra Road, Mutley to Laira and return.
Plymouth in those days was a scene of activity!
Roy Hart writes
Dear Keith,
There is another photograph of this incident in 'An Illustrated History of Plymouth's Railways' by Martin Smith (Irwell, 1995). Photo by Terry Nicholls. The caption says that the re-railing attempt using 1006 was not successful. This photo shows the 'County' drawing up to the casualty, which is certainly well grounded on 'old England'.
All the best!

The Saturday holiday express is seen changing locomotives, with the train stopped on the bank outside Laira steam shed. This saved light engine movements between Laira and North Road Station and would not continue much longer as diesels took over the whole journey. This was taken during my driving job parked at the end of Marine Parade while having a tea break and leg stretch. Apologies for the lack of a train but current employment schedules don't allow me the luxury of timing my visits. Perhaps it is me but the current construction looks worse than the artists' impressions from over a year ago.

Lost Scottie Dog found at
Par
Clive Smith

37175 appears to be a bit of an itinerant wanderer. This photo was taken at Par on the 19th July 1986 about two months after its reallocation to Laira from Scotland where it had been at Eastfield or Inverness from 1982. The tractor still has its  headlight that was fitted in conjunction with the start of RETB Radio Electronic Token Block signalling in the Scottish Highlands. Also present are well used  snowploughs complete with Eastfield's West Highland Terrier logo on the side.
Prior to that it was a south Wales stalwart from when it was built in 1963. After its sojourn in the south west of England  it was back to Scotland from 1987 to 1998 with spells at Inverness, Eastfield and Motherwell before a few years in the Midlands at the end of that decade.
Surprisingly it was main line registered and sold to Colas in 2014 . It was certainly out and about on Network Rail test trains since then but I'm not sure if it has worked in the last twelve months.
On the 26-05-87 37175 worked the 11.45 Paddington - Penzance from Par to Penzance putting it in the elite club of locos that have worked on passenger at Thurso and Penzance at either end of the U.K.

Dear Keith and Valerie, I hope you are both well in these trying times. and are enjoying your daily walks - hopefully, I will be allowed out soon!
A copy of the Penryn Station post card sent in by Maurice Dart was printed in the Packet Newspaper dated September 19th 1991. It had been sent to them by a lady from Penryn, Doris Webber, who said " The elderly gentleman standing behind a porter near the building is my late husband's grandfather, Weymouth Davey. He was a retired tailor's shipping agent for the Penryn Area"

Amazing that we are still able to identify a person on a station some 100 or so years later!

Andy Richards
With the lockdown in place I thought I would give the garden a rest and try and sort my photographic collection in some sort of order.Whilst sifting through I came across a picture of myself at Laira open day on April 25th 1982 just after I had unveiled the nameplate on the side of Class 47 559 'Sir Joshua Reynolds', a Laira based loco in those days.
The naming was the first prize in a competition organised by the depot. I had only bought one ticket (being a true Cornishman) whilst my other friends spent a small fortune!!! My name was the 3rd name drawn out as the first two were not in the crowd. I was interviewed by the local radio station but have to admit I have no idea what I said!!!
Class 47 560 was also named "Tamar" on the same day by TSW presenter Fern Britton

In the attached photo is myself 17 years old (I wish I had that much hair now) at the time and Laira depot manager (Ian Cusworth?)

I hope you find this of interest
Regards, Andy Richards

An unusual and very interesting item for which many thanks - we're envious.
Who was Sir Josha Reynolds? Turning to Wikipedia  we get -  Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA FRS FRSA (16 July 1723 – 23 February 1792) was an English painter, specialising in portraits. John Russell said he was one of the major European painters of the 18th century. He promoted the "Grand style" in painting which depended on idealization of the imperfect. He was a founder and first president of the Royal Academy of Arts, and was kinghted by George 111 in 1769.
Another question - who is the grand master of locomotive names?  Who or what committee decides and where are they based?

Can anyone help with inside information or photographs taken inside of this building which would be much appreciated by Mr Ian Parker.
Back in the early 1970's I did a survey of all the buildings, and now I've retired, i started back on my project, but at the time I was unable to see inside the goods shed, do any of your members have any details of the interior layout, I know there were some overhead electric cranes, I do have details of the offices, but not the main shed.
