Two Routes to Oxford
Roger Winnen

These two routes covered a Merrymaker Special to Oxford for Blenheim Palace in 1977 and the commemorative Class 52 Tour with D1010 Western Campaigner on the 26th November 1976 which covered the route to Oxford via Birmingham and returning to Plymouth via Reading West, Mortimer, Basingstoke, Salisbury, Yeovil Junction, Exeter Central & St David's

 the Weedkiller arrives Penzance
Roger Winnen

Its early to start my daily permitted exercise from home at 23.52 hours to the Railway Station which I found locked up, deserted with not a soul in sight and not a sound to be heard. However making my return journey to home distant sounds could be heard from the east. Walking to the end of the station wall the Weedkiller had just arrived at the end of Platform 2.
This being the 22.20 St Blazey to St Blazey via Penzance 23.52/00.07 -St Ives 00.54 -Penzance 01.33/02.18 -St Blazey arr 03.04.
Its rare indeed to see the self contained weedkiller top and tailed by locomotives

(1) A class 150 in drab GWR green livery is incidental really in my photo taken at the classic location of Cockwood Harbour between Dawlish Warren and Starcross. The train is the 13.35 Plymouth - Exeter St Davids on Sunday 26th April 2020. My job entails driving around south Devon a fair bit and I found myself on the A379 with time for a break and a cuppa with a train due. On a beautiful afternoon with sun directly behind me and my usual railway photography outings virtually non-existent, this was too good an opportunity to miss despite the subject matter. A 2+4 HST would have been better but I can't be choosy and I am lucky I am able to be out and about when so many others are not. Lot of cyclists around in the area and what better way at the moment to take your daily permitted exercise than a bike ride along the Exe Estuary Cycle Path - that is providing you live along the route. (2) 950001 crosses Bittaford Viaduct with the 2Q08 04.53 Bristol High Level Siding - Laira. After six weeks of superb weather during the coronavirus lockdown this was the first dreary day with persistent rain. I was planning to take my permitted exercise and walk the twenty minutes along the leafy local lanes to Wrangaton and photo it from the bridge there. However not wishing to get soaked and in line with my new sloth-like activity I dragged myself off the sofa and took this shot from my bedroom window on maximum telephoto before returning to the sofa to recover from my exertions and have another chocolate biscuit and look at old train photos. Many thanks indeed, an amazing view from your bedroom window, and well timed, the bright yellow test train makes for a very interesting shot.

I must admit on receiving the above picture from Phil Smith I wondered what on earth this was to do with railways, we're not a ship site! However on looking up Google I found a most interesting video on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=316qhvUNp38 still not railways but there is a loose connection with Mr. Brunel's bridge and this again appears in the video - worth taking a look.
Clifton Suspension bridge which spans the Avon Gorge is one of the world's greatest bridges. It was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel who was just 24-years-old when he won the commission to build the bridge. ... The bridge's total span is 702 feet and it sits majestically 245 feet above the water below at high tide.

I hope that you are doing well in Cornwall through the Covid -19 crisis.
With Spring progressing, I guess the countryside is coming alive and people will want to get out and enjoy it.
I sent this email through to the General Enquiries section of the CRS website. I'm looking for some help to ID a shed in the yard at St Erth and any general information that members may have about the goods operations at St Erth.
If you can help please reply to Steve Martin - his email address is: [email protected]

While out taking my reasonable exercise today, I spotted this train parked at Burngullow. Having no camera with me, the image was taken at 11:34 hrs. using my phone. It shows 66074 and 66082 with ten JNA wagons. I understand that this train worked down from Westbury on Saturday afternoon as 675V and is due to return early on Monday morning. It was being used in connection with work on the Parkandillack Branch.
 Best wishes, Julian

I have received your forwarded email from Ian Kennedy regarding use of some of my images taken on the Falmouth branch for a forthcoming book, and I have just replied to him on that matter. This was a coincidence because some of the images posted on the website over the past few days had prompted me to contact you anyway! First of all though, I can confirm that I am now living in Par! And it looks like I made it just in time too………

And so to the pictures which have prompted to get in touch……..

Andrew Thompson’s photo of large-logo blue 47515 approaching Hayle (it looks like ‘515 to me too) – I attach a view of the same loco at Truro on 31st July 1971, in its original condition. As D1961 this was the very last Class 47 to enter traffic, delayed by several months until January 1968 after being retained by the RTC at Derby. This may have had something to do with it being fitted with Electric Train Heating from new (as was D1960). D1953-61 were all outshopped in this ‘pattern’ of blue livery from new, and for some reason most of them were seen in Cornwall that summer. D1961 was withdrawn quite early, in January 1991, so saw only 23 years’ service – by comparison D1660 City of Truro was built 3 years earlier and is still going strong 55 years later!

The strikingly colourful 37884, recently used on an HST stock move, was previously 37183, and in April 1984 this became the only locomotive Swindon Works ever turned out in large-logo blue livery, for use in Scotland. Unusually it retained its frost grilles, ‘domino’ headcode panels and bufferbeam skirting. I have some photos of it gleaming on Swindon Stabling Point but scanning those is on my retirement To Do List……..

Roger Winnen’s Chacewater photos show 50024 + 45031 eastbound and 47244 heading west. How do I know? Because I was located a mile or so to the east and photographed the same trains passing Saveock! (The double-header photo is already on the website.) I have the date as 25th June 1977, four days later, but having compared photos (loco orientation, wiper positions, dirt patterns etc) I have no doubt they are the same workings. Quite a coincidence, since by then I was only an occasional visitor to Cornwall and after this week wouldn’t return for five years – still my longest time away.

Best regards,

Neil Phillips

Hello Keith,  A couple of shots taken today at Exeter St Davids today while on my permitted daily exercise.
43301 and 43321 worked the 0611 Leeds to Plymouth, then a few minutes later 37884 appeared on the 1137 Laira to Leicester barrier coach move. This was running 110 minutes early.
Hope you and your wife are well and avoiding the virus!

Europhoenix 37884 heads the 5V84 11.33 Doncaster Works - Laira stock move running 85 minutes early at Daveys Bridge east of Ivybridge. By chance I was taking my daily permitted exercise from my front door  and had walked fifteen minutes along the B3213 to the railway line and was just turning around to go home when this came around the corner ! Seems four people already knew about it as they had arrived in two cars and were leaning on the bridge parapet two metres apart so there was no room for me at my usual position.  The formation is five HST Castle class coaches for the final 2+4 set and two barrier vehicles. This loco was far better known as 37183 former doyen of South Wales and the Scottish Highlands.

Old Mixon Siding
Tony Hill

Recently Tony Hill drew our attention to a little known siding  off to down main line just north east of Uphill Junction. This served an aircraft factory, built in 1940 at Old Mixon as a "shadow" factory complementing the then RAF Weston Super Mare, where test flights of the new aircraft were carried out. The factory was sited just outside the western boundary of the airfield. During World War Two it produced Bristol Beaufighter fixed wing aircraft for the war effort. From 1955 it was a centre of production for Bristol helicopters, later in 1960 taken over by Westland Helicopters. The factory is was part of an industrial estate (Weston Euro Park). Now developed for housing. Information from Pastscape.  This was served at one time by a siding. Does anybody know any more about this siding – when was it installed and removed etc?

This query was published at about 06.30 today - the answer came less than three hours later from Roy Hart - a resident of Rangoon, Burma.
Roy says :-  The Bristol Aircraft plant was served by extensive sidings on the down side between Worle and Uphill junctions. Passenger trains for the workers ran from Bristol and could come straight off the main line into the plant, where there was a special platform.
The layout was controlled by Hutton signalbox, which opened on 18th August 1940. The box closed on 7th June 1964.

Roy
- And now we all know - many Thanks to you Roy. I'll add your info to the main site.
Experimenting with Google Earth
Brilliant Features

Further to the above, in researching using google earth I discovered a feature on this wonderful site which enables one to turn back the clock. On the top edge of the Google Earth screen you will see an ‘alarm clock’ icon.  Click on this and a ‘slider’ appears on the top of the image, now, using your mouse click on the slider and you will be able to see past Google Earth views.  In the case of Weston – super – Mare this didn’t help a lot as you can only go back to 1999, but it led me to look elsewhere and turn the clock back. For instance, take yourself to Chippenham on ‘Google Earth’ and click on the clock and slider.  You will see that it is possible to obtain images as far back as 1945 (These appear in black and white). You can, in fact, follow the Calne branch and even see stock in the sidings at that location.

Furthermore, zoom out to see the whole of the country, you will find several other sections in black and white, these include part of London, Cardiff and Glasgow.  A very interesting and valuable feature those less in the know have never seen.  Something to look at especially during the time of ‘Lockdown’.
                                               Enjoy

Exeter Railfair '94
Andrew Rigler

Back in 1994 to commemorate 150 years of railway history, there was a two day rail fair held in Riverside Yard drawing many interesting steam, diesel and electric locomotives.

I attended the event on Sunday 2nd May 1994 when the attached images were taken. On the day, there was a very wide range of traction on display, including a steam shuttle into Exeter St Davids double-headed by two standard class 4MT tank locos, see image Railfair 1994 3.

It was a fantastic line-up, which included Deltics, a class 73, class 50, class 37s, class 33s and a selection of coached and wagons. There was plenty for steam fans too including the 4MT locos, a 14xx 1420 and a Bulleid West Country class number 34105 Swanage. Most locomotives were fully accessible. The whole event was a credit to the organisers and probably something which could never happen these days. GWR King class 6024 King Edward I was in steam on the day running up and down a short stretch of the sidings. There a great website providing more details of the movements around the railfair at https://www.tauntontrains.co.uk/oldsite/MEMORIES-EXETERRAILFAIR.htm

Hi Keith.  Been on a very long stretch of nights recently. The Network Rail test train does much of its testing after hours once the other traffic dies down.
Colas liveried 37219 was out on the 21st / 22nd April testing the Gunnislake and St Ives branches. The train is seen in the small hours at the charming station at Bere Alston.
The train still ran as day break came, and is seen trundling back to St Erth from St Ives on the golf course at Lelant.
The five coach consist includes a former day coach from the Caledonian Sleeper set. The carriage has retention tanks fitted for the on board loos.

Kind regards,  Craig

Picture
50007 Sir Edward Elgar working a down train from St Erth. Copyright Andrew Thompson. An interesting view looking towards and into the up refuge siding. Presumably the siding was level - this illustrates well the 1 in 70 gradient faced by the locomotive leaving St Erth.
50007 was named Hercules on 06 April 1978, after the British battleship of the same name. On 25 February 1984, the locomotive was outshopped in Brunswick Green and renamed Sir Edward Elgar, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Great Western Railway. After being withdrawn on 16 July 1991, the locomotive was re-instated for railtour service, and was one of the two Class 50 locomotives to haul the final BR Class 50 railtour, the 50 Terminator. 50007 was the second to last member of the fleet, being retired on 26 March 1994.

Many thanks Andrew
