Out in the sun -
with  Craig Munday
Hi Keith
After the snow the weather was particularly turgid. Thankfully we've had a sustained blast of sunshine which has brought the countryside to life.
Some pictures from the recent week, including an Exeter Riverside shot from today. I was covering the area for a couple of shifts and popped over to see 59005 arrive with the stone working from Westbury.

Kind regards,  Craig          Many thanks Craig

Major Works at
Dilton Marsh
Guy Vincent

Dilton Marsh Halt, 1.5 miles south of Westbury is currently undergoing platform extension works to enable more than one door to be released on trains calling here.   The halt was last rebuilt in 1993 and each platform has a usable length of just 14.9 metres. This is being increased by 10 metres to 24.9 metres enabling one complete 'Turbo' carriage (23.5 metres) to fit.  At the same time the height of each platform is being corrected as subsidence is an issue here, the halt being located on a tall embankment. New steel pile foundations have been driven into the bank and the supporting piers will have screw threads enabling the platforms to be wound back up to the required height should movement ever take place.  It has been necessary to construct large scaffold trestles behind each platform to enable the work to be done, along with access tracks across surrounding land from the nearby country lanes. Four pictures of platform 2 (Salisbury bound) taken on April 16th.  NB By quirk of fate trains travelling 'down' from here are, in reality, facing a stiff uphill climb of 1 in 70 for over a mile to the summit at Upton Scudamore.   Up trains behave in the opposite way with constant, steady braking necessary as they approach the 40 mph permanent speed restriction through Westbury South Junction.

HST Power Car fire
Penzance Station
Roger Winnen

It was reported on the local news programmes this morning that a HST Power Car was on fire at Penzance Station last night. 43138 is shown on Youtube with smoke billowing from its engine compartment after working the  14.03 Paddington to Penzance service. The 15.03 Paddington-Penzance service due at 20.40 was held at St Erth for one hour before proceeding to Penzance arriving at 21.53hrs  Five fire appliances attended the scene at Penzance Station during which time the station was evacuated, however there were no injuries as the passengers had by this time left the station before the fire broke out. Visiting the station on Wednesday morning revealed that the offices together with the ticket office were closed awaiting the all clear from the toxicologist taking samples. Tickets however were being sold by travelling ticket inspectors on the platform.

Hawkeridge
Guy Vincent

Here's a picture of Hawkeridge Junction to add to the Bradford Junction-Westbury collection.  The area between the two lines and the road is used by Network Rail for materials storage so, as a result, is very untidy.  Beyond the railway is one of several recently-constructed solar farms.  From the White Horse they look like lakes!  Guy Vincent.

New Order at
Weymouth
Guy Vincent

166207 in platform 1 at Weymouth on the morning of Saturday 14th April. This had arrived the previous evening on the 1642 ex Gloucester and was due to leave attached to the rear of the 2E20 0853 Gloucester.   However, this was formed of 158957 as seen at platform 2 so coupling was not possible.   166207 eventually left Weymouth attached to another 166 on the 1308 service to Gloucester.  Note the difference in width between the two types of unit.

Never ignore warnings
Clive Smith
The pictures in sequence show what happened on 16th August 1982 when the driver of this Volvo estate chose to ignore the warning signs and park their vehicle obstructing the passage of the 09.54 Channel Islands boat train from Waterloo. 33 112's slow progress along the tramway to Weymouth Quay station came to a halt at Custom House Quay, a short distance from journey's end. Usually any obstructing vehicles were 'bumped' out of the way by swift brute force but on this occasion the Volvo had a fitted brake lock  which made the manhandling efforts far more difficult. I recall the hold up was about 45 minutes. Dorset Constabulary soon showed up but their efforts were in vain as the local breakdown recovery service was eventually called out to remove the offending vehicle. A great afternoon's entertainment for the visiting tourists although the railway employee walking in front of the train doesn't look too happy at the heart of the developing fiasco. Unusually for this period he is sporting high visibility attire albeit a rather miniscule orange bib. A much missed line from what seems like a bygone age
Regards,  Clive Smith
Many thanks indeed for your pictures and article - great fun for the spectators!

Visit to Long Rock T.M.D

On Saturday last members of the Cornwall Railway Society visited the Long Rock Depot, the third visit since the start of the expansion to the depot.
It was quite remarkable to see the completed work done to equip this depot to the 21st Century standards to handle work that was once carried out at Old Oak Common.  Cornwall Council has been very generous with funding together with ECC Development grants.  Many thanks must go to Patrick Grobbelaar the Depot Manager for giving us these guided tours and for giving up his free time on a Saturday afternoon

Focus on Freshford
Guy Vincent

Network Rail contractors have recently started work to extend both platforms at Freshford station by 30 metres at the Westbury end to accommodate 5-car class 165-6 'Turbo' formations.    Platform 1 (Bath-bound) is currently 78 metres and P2 (Westbury-bound) is 82 metres.  When one considers how many such formations will actually stop here, the relatively low number of passengers who use the station compared to other stations catering for far greater numbers, and the long-established practice of passengers for this station happily travelling in the front three coaches of existing trains, it is very hard to see how such expense has been justified.   Freshford is an unstaffed 'halt' with no ticket-buying facilities available (other than on board the train or in advance), is situated in an idyllic spot in the Avon valley with very limited car parking available (approx. 12 spaces) and in my personal view this level of work, frankly, seems unnecessary.

Guy Vincent   Many thanks Guy for this very detailed report and pictures.

Gwinear Road

Picture
A privileged view of Gwinear Road Crossing taken from the up side probably in the early 70's. When the crossing included also the metals of the Helston branch on the far side it can be seen just how long it once was! From the Mike Hitchens Collection
Tavy Bridge

Two more views by Clive - many thanks.
Picture
A smashing view as Laira 2-car set P480 crosses the Tavy Bridge with the 14.15 from Gunnislake to Plymouth on 15th January 1983 Copyright Clive Smith Note that this was before half the bridge was repainted.
Picture
A view from the river in 2015 shows the Tavy bridge almost to its full extent. One wonders whether the next repaint will be to complete the spans on the left hand side of this picture or to repaint the whole bridge - a big job whatever. Copyright Clive Smith
