A mystery object - can you identify it?

One and all

Unearthed in a customer's garden in Lostwithiel. To my mind it is a GW font, but beyond that, it is a mystery.

Any ideas please.

Kindly donated by the customer who has a wall of them.....

A 'Peak' passing Onslow
Roger Geach

Picture
46035 of Gateshead on 1V71 Leeds to Penzance passing Onslow sidings on Saturday 25.02.1978. Certain Gateshead based peaks were quite common down west, although a few of that batch were rare - they spent quite a bit of the time on the East Coast main line from Kings Cross to Edinburgh especially on the overnight services and van trains, so were not as commonly seen in Cornwall as the local Laira ones. Many thanks, Phil - don't see many shots of this loco or livery.

It is interesting to note that this loco - 47817 - became 57311. The black class 57 which is currently attracting interest working the GWR sleeper services.

Owning to the continued unavailability of GWR's own fleet of class 57/6s, the company have now hired-in 57311 from railtour operator Locomotive Services Limited.

The loco was put to work on Friday night, working the down 'Night Riviera' sleeper from Paddington - Penzance, with 57603 on the rear. It's understood that 57603 is due to go on exam at Long Rock, so we can expect 57311 to work tonights (09.03.2025) 'up' sleeper back to Paddington.

A crossover question - answered
Martin Duff

From yesterday - Jonathan Harbage has raised the question as to whether this is the first loco to use the new crossover on Truro Viaduct and to travel 'wrong line' into the station - does anybody know if this is the case?”

The class 69 on Friday - no, it’s not the first.

Back in the autumn last year one evening (14th October i think) I was on the workstation in Exeter and the RHTT was running early.

I regulated it to Truro up platform 3 over the new crossover for 1V60 to pass which was following close behind.

As the RHTT was due to treat the down line over Carvedras viaduct, when 1V60 had arrived, and the driver changed ends we ran the RHTT back to the down line (toward the shunt limit at Moresk) on the down line and it then continued on its way.

Later that same week on the Friday night I ran empty Sprinter 5C15 this way so I could get the Falmouth unit in (signal overlap at the west end of the down platform) without delaying 2C87 behind it.

The flexibility of the new signalling arrangements is superb.

As it’s now bidirectional over the up between the crossovers, in modern terms this is no longer “wrong line”.

I’d have to check but I don’t think what I did with the RHTT was the first running of a locomotive this way - we may have done it with the down sleeper one morning, not sure.

Cheers,

Martin D
Many thanks, Martin - a great insight of what goes on behind the scenes, nice to read that the new signalling flexibility is working well.

'Penzance Railway Station and My Working Life with BR'

Picture
Dear Cornwall Railway Society,

On Tuesday 11 March at 7pm there will be a talk on 'Penzance Railway Station and My Working Life with BR' given by Mr Leslie Richards. Mr Richards began working at Penzance Station in the 1950s and worked for BR for his entire working life, gradually gaining greater responsibility in the posts he held. This should be a fascintating talk with many insights and anecdotes from a long working life.

The talk will take place at Cornish Heritage in Penzance which is in the former Penzance publlc library building, 62, Morrab Road. Entrance is by donation (suggested £3-£5).

We have attached a poster and would appreciate it if you would circulate this to your members or to people who would enjoy hearing about these recollections.

Kind regards

Jane Howells

Thanks, Jane - worth a visit for those in the area, I'm sure!

Newquay forrtnight!
Craig Munday

Many revellers look forward to Boardmasters at Newquay each year. Locomotive fans have had their own "festival" with a procession of Engineers trains visiting the new loop at Tregoss. I have grabbed photos on the branch and it's been super to see the line bask in the limelight.

Some other images are included taken in recent days too.

Hello Roger, Thank you for dealing with the St.Erth picture. Here is another from one of the many boxes of pictures from my late brother, again not noted with any details. The name on the bottom could be Richard O'Brien but was this the subject or was it the photographer's name.? Again, any name or information would be pleasing. Not sure why my brother had these, our grandfather worked at Penzance station as a carriage cleaner, his name was Frank Thompson. Thanks, all the best, michael.

Par Resignalling - 1st Anniversary
Neil Phillips

Hello Roger, Keith and Jon,

Wonderful photographs of the loop installation on Goss Moor in recent days, congratulations to all concerned. That sky - wow!

As another reminder of how time flies (as if we need one), it has already been exactly one year since Par's semaphore signals were dismantled. Here are three views taken on Sunday 3rd March 2024 with the semaphores signalling some of their last trains, and much the same perspectives taken two days later on Tuesday 5th March after the signal arms had been removed. I still miss the twanging wires, clanging arms and the ability to tell whether a train was coming from BEHIND the signal!

Best regards

Neil Phillips

Many thanks indeed, Neil. A year ago already - wow.

A question - can you help?
Any records of the two attempts to put a railway across Salisbury Plain?

I wonder if you, or anyone in your society can help me.

I’m researching the Plain generally and my village of Orcheston in particular, where w intend to start a local history society, and I have come across two attempts to run a railway line from Devizes to Salisbury, the first in 1840 and the second in 1897.

All I have been able to find so far is from the Bill in the House for the first and some reports on the Times for the second. Is there anyone in your society who might be able to point me to fuller accounts, not least any plan or map of the intended routes, and what caused them to come to nothing?

I would be very grateful for any assistance.
Can you help with this interesting query? Please drop us an email at [email protected]

Chris Osment replies:

With regard to the enquiry about a proposed railway from Devizes to Salisbury, there was certainly a proposal in 1898 for a Light Railway from Pewsey to Salisbury.

I would suggest that your enquirer should read Chapter 1 of "Rails across the Plain" by Jeffery Grayer, published by Noodle Books in 2011.

Many thanks, Chris - a big help

Hello Roger, Amongst the items left by my late brother were thousands of photographs, mostly of family and local scenes but some fascinating ones are included such as this one ,sent by my niece. It has nothing written on the reverse but is clearly St.Erth station with, I guess the staff. From the style of the uniforms and cap badges I think we must be in the 1950s or 1960s .and are the two suited gentlemen perhaps booking office clerks or,maybe ,enthusiasts and/or photographers ? I hope someone can identify some of the staff in this photo.. Michael Forward

Congratulations to the fantastic team working on this project upon their marvellous progress. It has been fascinating to see it unfold.
Some information from Roy Hart received 03.03.2025:

Jon Hird asks when was the last time two trains crossed at Tregoss:

The double line across the moor was installed in 1921, to assist in the passage of heavy clay traffic brought northwards as a result of the 'Carpella break' when the Drinnick branch was severed at a point south of Drinnick.

The break ended in 1922, but the double line proved useful as summer passenger traffic grew on the Newquay branch.

The double line was taken out of use on 3rd January 1965, so I suspect that the last time that two trains crossed on the Goss moor was in the autumn of 1964.

Incidentally, I was surprised to read professional railwaymen refer to the new loop as a 'passing loop'. It is no such thing. On single lines, a loop where trains from opposite directions can pass one another is CROSSING LOOP.
Many thanks indeed, Roy.

Exeter Model Railway Society
David Tozer

In August 2023 you had a few photographs of the Exeter Model Railway Society railway located in the grounds of St Katherines Priory, Exeter. This is at the rear of Morrison's Supermarket at Exmouth Junction.

Much progress has been going on in recent months with the group working hard to complete the loop of track. A new viaduct is under construction.

With some fine weather today I took a stroll to the site as on the first
Sunday in the month they are open with rides costing only £2.

I managed a photo of SWR Class 159 159005 passing with the 0938 Waterloo to Exeter. I had hoped to get a photograph with the little steam engine close to the main line railway embankment. Sadly it did not work out.

Joe Birchall

Whilst going out to see the 06:28 Voyager as usual, I decided to take a picture following the light frost.  The attached photos show 221 116 (ex-Avanti) from the my usual position with the branches framing each coach nicely.

Many thanks Joe - nice shots (sorry they're a day late!)

Tregoss Moor Engineers

I called in to the Goss Moor worksite on my way home on 01.03.2025 and, as luck would have it, 70809 was positioned perfectly at a farm crossing for a couple of photos. The loco and its short train of 3 wagons (carrying steel sleepers) were waiting to enter the worksite near St. Dennis junction where a new passing loop is being constructed. Copyright Jon Hird.

A look the other way, towards Newquay, the point work for the passing loop is now installed. 01.03.2025, copyright Jon Hird.

Another look at 70809. I had just enough time to fall out the car and fire off a few shots before the train moved on. 01.03.2025, copyright Jon Hird.
Picture
A couple of drone shots before the light went. 70809 pulls up to the site of the loop and the road rail vehicle prepares to lift the sleepers from its wagons. My thanks to the contractors Griffiths for allowing a few shots. 01.03.2025, copyright Jon Hird.

70809 has come to a stop and the train begins to be unloaded. A member of the workforce told me that they hope to have rails down by lunchtime tomorrow (02.03.2025). 01.03.2025, copyright Jon Hird.
