Life after First Great Western
The Class 47/8s
Steve Clark

I'm sure you all know that Great Western's Fleet of 47s found further use away from the Western Region, nominally with Freightliner Heavy Haul where they were to be found on all manner of workings.

From 2006, some of the Class 442's which I worked on were being sent to Ilford for some remedial work to comply with new rules for disabled people, especially those who are visually impaired. This meant that the passenger entry doors had to be a different colour from the rest of the livery, and the 442's were stripped of their 3rd Rail shoe beams and gear before being dragged to Ilford by Heavy Haul machines.

Class 47s were used for nearly all the workings, however the odd 66 was used when Class 47 availability was low. Below are a few images of these workings captured in 2006 and 2007.

I was also lucky enough to bag a couple of workings of drags from Liverpool Street to Norwich via Brandon whilst work was being done to lower the track bed inside Ipswich Tunnel (to clear the route to W10 spec, to allow for boxes to be carried on standard flat wagons). Ex-FGW 47813 was one of the Locos seen still wearing its Green livery.

Finally, there is the sorry sight of 47816 out in open storage at Crewe Basford Hall Yard, seen whilst on an organised Tour of the Yard.

Many thanks indeed, Steve. I'm sure many of us have happy memories of these workhorses during their GW/FGW days. Nice to note that 47830 and 47813 still have mainline careers to this day.

More Porterbrook Purple
Roger Fletcher

Following on from some recent topics we've covered (47817), Roger has kindly sent in some photographs of another purple loco - 57601.

This loco was a demonstrater constructed by Brush Traction in 2001 ahead of the 57/3 and 57/6 program. It was on hire to First Great Western as a demonstrator and worked along the fleet of class 47/8's.

It obviously impressed, as it lead to the TOC ordering 57602, 603 and 604 for for use on their sleeper services. Later, as 57601 was deemed as non-standard, an additional locomotive (57605) was also ordered.

57601 remains in service with West Coast Railways and currently carries the 'Northern Belle' livery.

Wonderful stuff, Roger and with perfect timing - your article compliments Steves above - 57601 being the locomotive which led to the disbandment of the FGW class 47 fleet.

Exeter Gas Works
and a life of railways

Keith Gale

Ferroequinology (the study of railways) is an interesting hobby and one that many here will agree is very worthwhile. During our studies we find many interesting facts and stories along the way. My particular interest has always been with the unusual. Although I have always aknowledged main line railways - especially freight - the quirky has always appealed. I am not quite sure where this originates from, but this story may provide a clue.

When I was growing up, kids had a lot of freedom. After school and at weekends I had the world at my feet - well, within walking and cycling distance at least. I merely had to tell my Mother the rough time that I would reappear for food and the time was my own within reason. Exeter was my patch and the link with railways was forged at an early age. My parents house was in Exwick  - just a stones throw from St Davids Station and I clearly recall falling to sleep to the sounds of shunting at Riverside Yard, where my Father worked for a short while.

A new (second-hand) bicycle was my steed and so I went exploring the obscure little sidings within reach. One industrial area at that time was around Haven Banks with its Gas Works. This area was in complete contrast to the green fields surrounding Exwick. Here was the sound of moving 12 tonne coal wagons, hissing of steam and gas, conveyors transporting coal and so on. I waited by the gated level crossing at Tan Lane and sure enough a small yellow diesel shunter appeared. It was very different to the shunters at Exeter sheds (later to be called class 08's) and of course it was not blue - and dd not even have a visible number! Anyhow, I spent an hour or so watching this locomotive shuttle back and forth with coal wagons taking the fulls from the exchange sidings to the tipper and the empties back. A picture of the locomotive is shown below (courtesy of an unknown source from the internet):
Picture
HE 6263 at Exeter Gas Works 8 July 1969. Copyright unknown.
The driver of the locomotive (discovered later from the Industrial Railway Society records as Hunslet 6263) saw this twelve year old looking over the crossing gates and took pity. 'Oi fella, would you like a ride in the loco?' 'You bet' said I and over the gates I went and up into the cab. The loco was quite rough riding, very rattily and loud. I even had the chance to drive (under strict supervision!). All too soon I had to go home, thanked the driver and went on my way.

Over the years and on many occasions I had thought about the Exeter Gas Works visit and decided to conduct some research into the industrial railway system. I knew that one of the steam locomotives had been preserved at the Dart Valley Railway (Peckett 2031) but imagine my surpise when I found that the Hunslet diesel had also been preserved. After working at the Gas Works it moved to several Coking Works in the North East of England - and then into preservation at the Bowes Railway. In 2024 I arranged to visit the Bowes Railway and was delighted to see HE6263 again - and enter the cab again some 55 years later!

NINETEEN SIXTY FOUR – PART 36
Heathfield – More About This Rural Junction

Michael L. Roach

The turnpike road from Newton Abbot to Moretonhampstead and Whiddon Down was built by the Newton Bushel Turnpike Trust. Newton Bushel was the old name for Newton Abbot. At a place then called Drum Bridge (now called Drumbridges) it crossed the Chudleigh to Brent turnpike road of 1755. Two miles north of the crossroads was the small town of Bovey Tracey which was once the centre of a number of potteries based on the clay to be found in the area. Just half a mile to the north-east of the crossroads a pottery and brickworks was established by Frank Candy in 1850. The Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway built a branch line from Newton Abbot to Moreton which passed along the eastern boundary of the Candy Works. The line was opened on 4 July 1866 and worked by the South Devon Railway from the outset although there was no passenger station alongside the works at first. A station was opened alongside the works on I July 1874 and named Chudleigh Road, but the name was changed to Heathfield on 1 October 1882 because the first length of the Teign Valley Railway was about to open from Heathfield to Christow on 9 October 1882 and Chudleigh would then have its own station. The Teign Valley line was standard gauge and the Moreton Branch was broad gauge so for the first ten years until May 1892,  and the gauge conversion, all goods had to be transhipped at Heathfield Station. The OS 25-inch of 1887/88 shows two completely separate railways in Heathfield Station.

Even after 1892 there was still no easy rail connection between the two lines. Trains arriving from Newton Abbot destined for the Teign Valley line were directed into a headshunt from which they had to reverse into the bay platform before setting out along the Teign Valley. The OS of 1905/06 shows this layout. Finally in 1916 the junction was rebuilt to allow direct access from the Newton Abbot  direction on to the Teign Valley line, with a new signal box being provided to control the new layout. Meanwhile the Teign Valley had been extended from Christow to Exeter on 1 July 1903 and from then until closure the line became a useful diversionary route when the seawall at Dawlish was having problems.

Exeter to Heathfield passenger trains were withdrawn on an from Monday 9 June 1958 with the last trains running on the previous Saturday, as there was no Sunday service. The last timetable shows five trains each way with an extra one  on Saturday evenings. There were good connections at Heathfield where passengers changed for Newton Abbot. The Newton to Moreton passenger trains were withdrawn just nine months later on and from Monday 2  March 1959. I made my only trip on this branch on the last day of passenger services Saturday 28 February 1959. The Moretonhampstead Branch was the subject of a failed preservation attempt.

I looked back through many of my GWR and BRWR timetables from 1902 to 1958 to see if any Teign Valley passenger trains ever left the branch and ran through to Newton Abbot. I did not find any doing so and passengers always had to cross the platform into a Moreton to Newton Abbot train. Connections were tight with as little as one minute timetabled between the arrival of one train and the departure of the other. Even in the other direction connections were tight with as little as two minutes allowed. However, some interesting features did come to light looking through the timetables. In Summer 1953 some Heathfield to Exeter passenger trains terminated at Alphington on Saturdays with passengers being advised that the connection was an Exeter Corporation Omnibus. The Summer 1932 timetable was also interesting. All trains were operated by a one class only steam rail motor car, so there was no running around at each end of the journey. This was used to advantage with some rail motors arriving at Heathfield from Exeter and  then running north on the Moreton line 2¼ miles to Bovey Station which saved passengers a half hour wait for a Moretonhampstead train. Bovey now has a population of 8,000 persons, and although Heathfield still has very few houses it does have a huge industrial estate.

'Back To The Future'
Guy Vincent

One thing on the railway is for certain, what goes around comes around again if you wait long enough.

Back in the spring of 1988, new class 155 2 car Sprinter sets began their takeover of the Portsmouth /Brighton - Cardiff route.  This was to be short lived however, as various faults and the arrival of class 158s from 1991 saw the 35 sets converted to single car class 153s and scattered across the UK. These were not permitted to run south of Southampton due to clearance issues with the external foot stepping boards fitted during conversion.

However, times have now again changed, and the 153s are enjoying a mini renaissance with Network Rail for route assessing and testing.

153311 was caught in the bay platform at Fareham on such a working today (25.03) which had originated at Eastleigh.  Not a sight I thought I would witness again.

Many thanks, Guy. The 153's had their flaws, but writing as a photographer/enthusiast, they were a welcome sight on our branch lines in the various colourful liveries they wore in the early 2000's. Glad to see they've found a new purpose.

This loco immediately returned to Plymouth and is seen passing  Fairwater Yard.
Later in the afternoon, a rake of empty box wagons was sent from Cardiff Tidal Sidings to Exeter Riverside Yd,
drawn by GNRf  66772, and is seen passing Bathpool.

Hope these are of interest
Best wishes

The cast has changed but the script is still going awry. Nancegollan Station 1962
Kit Miles

To the Cornwall Railway Society

This photo was taken during a family visit to Cornwall in 1962. The triple turnout fascinated me and I later built a model TT3 layout with this feature in the track using Peco components. I hope this may be of interest.

Best regards,

Swap of the 69’s
Simon Smith

Hello,

I've been following the Cornish adventures of 69005 through you with interest and spotted it seemed to be being swapped with 69003 today, to/from Eastleigh via Reading, assume the works at Salisbury prevented going that way. I was looking at Open Train Times and despite the booked route being via Reading for 0Z69 Plymouth Park-Eastleigh, it was briefly given a road on the Dilton Marsh line at Westbury, which caused a brief flutter. Thankfully it did head our way.

I think this is the first 69 through here at Kintbury, although if it is them it was only a couple of hours til the next one.

Both 0Z69 and 0Z70 spent time at the same time in platform 2 at Reading on the day.

I am on the Berks and Hants and keep an eye on anything heading your way! I am trying to get a shot of every class from the same bridge in Kintbury and this was another one done.

Thanks for the resource, I love the daily posts and many happy memories of my Cornish adventures.

Many thanks, Simon. We’ll keep an eye out for 69003. Very glad to read you enjoy the site!

Rail replacement at Swindon
Ken Mumford

Hello friends,
Engineering works east and west of Swindon today (22.03) and tomorrow.

Buses were provided as follows:-

READING - non-stop
DIDCOT PARKWAY - non-stop
CHIPPENHAM - direct.

Talking to one of the staff supervising the replacement service, there was a steady stream throughout the day, though there were times when several coaches arrived at the same time.
Picture

Picture
158760 framed between two upright posts - this was an experiment of mine pointing west as the sun was beginning to set, hence several shots of it arriving as1L82 but I did not record its departure as 1G23. I did wait to see the arrival of this working as RTT has it down as an EXPRESS PASSENGER! BUT I checked its timings to and from Swindon and it made the SAME STOPS as the previous train [2B90 and 2G91] AND took exactly the same time!! So why was the second train given an Express Passenger status? On a positive note BOTH workings from Cheltenham carried quite a load of passengers when they alighted at platform 2. 22.03.2025, copyright Ken Mumford.

Light locomotives are tricky to capture in landscape, so some close up locations worked best for GBRf's 69005 on its crew learning ramblings. The temporary footbridge at Lostwithiel worked for the down 0Z50. Dawn chorus at St. Austell
Steve Clark

I had a busy day going around London on Wednesday, going up on Tuesday nights Sleeper and coming back on Wednesday nights Sleeper. Haulage was 57305 on 1A50 and 57603 on 1C50.

I arrived back in St Austell virtually on time and was pleased to see the 6V05 Clay was following.

The Cutting at St Austell was nicely lit with early morning sunshine and at 7am 66089 clagged its way towards me, heading for the Treviscoe branch.

50 images from my day out in London are now loaded to Flickr!! (click here)
