Room with a view!
Plymouth station
Chris Bellett
I think that all railway photographers have looked up at that tower overlooking the station and thought 'What a view' - a very private place  - here is the very privileged view which Chris Bellett had from his office. Chris writes -
Going through my archives thought you might like to add the attached photograph to the website.  Taken from my office on the 5th floor of Intercity House at Plymouth in 2006, looking out over the East end of Plymouth station.  Managed to capture the Moorswater Cement train and the Parkandillack China Clay train both waiting for the road East.

Kind Regards, Chris Bellett,   Retired S & T Manager.

Congratulations Clive on battling your way through security to get the above picture - it makes a very interesting comparison with an 'official view' taken by Chris some 23 years later. Spot the differences.

Probus Derailment
True or False
Nick Carlyon
I am an occasional lurker on your fascinating site.  I was wondering whether your learned membership could help me confirm the truth of a story handed down in my family.

The story is essentially that a man called Pearce was in charge of a shunting engine at Truro, presumably around the turn of the century, when an ailing up express came in.  He was ordered to couple his engine to the front of the express to assist the train engine on the climb out of Truro.  He objected that, while assisting the train out of Truro was in order, the express would overrun his engine on the descent to Par.  He was given the choice of complying or losing his job but told that, if he wished, he could fill out a complaint form recording his objections.  This he did.  The train set off.  As forecast, as they topped the climb out of Truro, the express began to push the smaller engine beyond its maximum speed.  Somewhere around Probus, the connecting rod of Pearce’s engine broke, dug into the track and toppled the engine down an embankment.  Pearce was killed.

An enquiry was held as a result of which a regulation was adopted that only locomotives of similar performance should double-head trains and that smaller locomotives would only bank at the rear where they did not need to be coupled.

The GWR subsequently oversaw the education of his twin sons and gave them jobs at Swindon.  One of them, William Henry Pearce, worked in the drawing office.  My father knew him and I met him in later life.   I recall him telling me he worked on the valve gear of the “Kings” and he told my father of being in the shelter built ahead of the smokebox for testing new designs.]

So much for the story.  It came from the lips of the son of the driver involved.  However I have not been able to find any more information on this incident.  I would have thought that a locomotive being lost down an embankment and a driver killed would have merited some sort of attention.  It would also be interesting to know whether this accident was responsible for the uniquely GW regulation that pilot engines had to be coupled inside the train engine: I understand that this practice persisted, despite the operational inconvenience, until Nationalisation.

As I said, I hope your membership can throw some light on the truth or otherwise of this story.  Are there for example any details of the date and/or the locomotives involved?

Best wishes,  Nick Carlyon

A fascinating story be it true or false. Many thanks Nick for sending it in. Perhaps your father may have relayed to you the experiences of Mr. Pearce's sons  at Swindon which again would prove very interesting. Thank you very much.

Railrailmaponline
Highly Recommended
Map Site
Members and general visitors to the CRS site will be interested in visiting http://www.railmaponline.com        From the opening page a full map of the UK can be accessed which can then be enlarged to show every railway line in the UK.     Not just today's network but  lines from the past have been overlaid.     As you zoom in sidings and even tramways become visible.    By moving a small 'man' icon with your mouse to any part of the map the image converts to google earth showing a recent ground or 'street' view.   I was interested in the Newport docks area where former GWR HST coaching stock can be seen undergoing processing.  The Avonmouth area too shows innumerable lines no longer in existence.    A view across Toton depot from the A52 dual carriageway shows the rows of redundant class 60 locos awaiting their fate.     Just the site for lockdown exploration and highly recommended.

Looking for new homes
London Trams
Roger Salter

These vehicles were used as living accommodation at Kenneggy Downs for many years by Mr & Mrs Ned Thomas.  In the early 1960's the old tram bodies they were moved to another location in the area where they have remained until mid March 2021, however as building work was about to commence on this site these historic vehicles have been been moved and  placed into temporary storage locally by Mr Andrew Newport, a haulage contractor and a transport enthusiast of Penzance. Mr. Newport  would like to find a good home for these historic trams where they can undergo restoration.
We don't know how these tramcar bodies once at Kenneggy Downs and later at Rosudgeon came to Cornwall - but it seems possible that they travelled by train.

Anybody any suggestions where they might go for restoration
Many thanks to Roger Salter for finding the trams and following them up.

Footnote - these trams were once part of a fleet of 150 trailer trams which were operated by the London County Council however it was found that with trailers in tow the speed of the tram fleet was too slow to compete with buses and they were dispensed to store. For more details please use the following link  https://www.canveyisland.org/history-2/old/tram-carriage/tram_carriage     one hopes that in due course the Rosudgeon trams will likewise be restored. Perhaps readers grandparents might have travelled in one of these along Victoria Embankment passing Big Ben!

Great News for
Okehampton
David Tozer
Good Morning all, Good news. Today is the official launch of work on the Okehampton branch. The line now has a website:- https://dartmoorline.com/ Somewhat ironic that some 29000 tons of ballast will be moved to the line when at the end of the line is mothballed Meldon Quarry. Dave
Thank you for advising us David - it is strongly advised that you click on the link above.

Chacewater - Newquay
Trewerry Query

Dear Keith

Good afternoon, I was given your contact details by Paul Maynard at Cormac. I am doing an archaeological and historic impact assessment of proposed works incorporating the former railway line between Benny Bridge and Trewerry and I wondered if you would have any information and images of this section of the line that may be helpful (and interesting) for my report.

I was out visiting the site yesterday and aside from the obvious surviving bridges I could see that traces of walling still survive alongside the former track leading to Trewerry Halt and also part of the level crossing on the opposite side of the road. Any images to help make sense of what was there previously would be enormously helpful.

I look forward to hearing back from you – and if you are able to send me anything please let me know if it would be okay to use any of it in my report and how you would like anything referenced.

Kind regards
Fiona

Station throat examined at
Weymouth
Guy Vincent

Work again took me to Weymouth today (14th March 2021) and an extended 2 hour break was included.  Time enough to walk the entire route again from the Ferry Terminal to Alexander bridge and back, taking yet another set of photos as I went.
Here are a few of the end of the line not usually covered, that around Weymouth Junction, Jubilee and Jersey Sidings. The location is Alexander bridge.  The modern three section bridge now in use dates from August 2006, cost over £640,000 and replaced the original GWR simple lattice-girder footbridge originally built in 1891.
With regards, Guy Vincent.

Looking at the state of the track on the Harbour branch as it was lifted * I wondered at refusal to run any more trains on the trains being given as 'Poor state of the track'. However looking at the condition of the track in picture 5 I see very good reason. * Click here for track lifting section and scroll to 2023.
Many thanks indeed Guy - your two hours were time extremely well spent.

Weymouth Tramway Finale
Guy Vincent
On June 3rd 1993 Regional Railways in association with Bristol University's Rural Tourism Unit hosted a seminar in the pavilion next to Weymouth Quay rail and ferry terminal. This was attended by representatives from various organisations including rail user groups, local and district councils and tourist authorities and was to lead to the formation of the Heart of Wessex Partnership which still exists to this day promoting and improving the line and its facilities.   Regional Railways provided their 6 coach loco-hauled set headed by 37408 'Loch Rannoch' and this formed a special 0900 Bristol Temple Meads - Weymouth in order to get delegates and attendees to the Dorset resort.  From Weymouth station 37408 propelled the train back to Weymouth Junction and then worked down to the Quay terminal where passengers for the seminar disembarked.  After running-round 37408 then worked a special 'Paradise Flyer' extra to Yeovil Pen Mill and back to Weymouth (Town station) before returning to Bristol at 1630.   Paradise Catering Ltd chartered the loco and stock on selected dates in 1993 and used it to form a Weymouth Quay-Yeovil & return (to Town) extra complete with refreshments.  I travelled on the train from Bradford on Avon to Weymouth then stayed on for the trip to the Quay and after attending the seminar returned home on the 1630 departure from Town.   Regrettably I didn't make any more trips behind a 37 over the tramway as on the day I chose to (1st September)  the loco, 37421, failed on the inbound ECS working behind the B&Q store and the train was cancelled.    A Youtube video shows the moment this happened when the loco's fire bottles suddenly discharged causing it to shut down.   As a bonus my return trip home was worked by departmental 37191 piloting the failed 37421, 054 having been summoned from Westbury to assist.

Best regards,  Guy V

Looking at the bridge that was replaced last week at Trewoon I was quite surprised that at only 50 years old it needed doing.   Surely it was of strong construction and could have been expected to last at least another 50 years?   The Lostwithiel bridge looks to be of a similar age, not old at all!  The oldest iron bridge I know of local to me is located at Belcombe just to the west of Bradford on Avon.  It is a small 'occupation' bridge and gives access to a stretch of land between the railway and the river Avon. It was built in 1856 so has carried every single train that has used the route since it opened on 2nd February 1857.  Some feat indeed!

Going the other way from Bradford and located at the site of the former Bradford West Junction is another elderly and rare survivor.  A wrought iron 'caisson' bridge that dates from around 1890 and takes the line across the river Avon and adjoining land.  Similar bridges at Bradford-on-Avon and at Staverton on the Melksham line were both replaced in the 1960s but this one stubbornly hangs on!

Always something of interest happening on the railways!

Best regards, Guy.
May I focus on the last line of Guy's e-mail - - and it's with many thanks to people like your good self keeping the interest going.

Bridge replacement at
Lostwithiel
Today is the day for the major bridge replacement work at Lostwitiel - the forecast is not good - gales and showers - severe westerly gales at first one hopes that the sheltered location in the valley is helpful.  We wish them well.
Picture
Setting the scene - here is s superb drone picture of the worksite very kindly sent in by Nathan Stockman Copyright, The FGW main line runs across the view with Lostwithel station top right, a massive crane is in position for the lift of the new bridge. The river Fowey meanders past Colsden park up through the town.
Many thanks to Nathan

This is the down side portion of the bridge giving a very good impression of the span over the river Fowey at this location. There were at one time three separate bridges here, The Fowey branch ran indepently into Lotwithiel over a bridge supported on pillars one of which can be seen on the left hand side. Hemyock Memories
The late John Vines

Some more of Dad's pictures, this time at Hemyock in the summer of 1970.  The station appears virtually complete despite losing its passenger service some seven years earlier.  Note the ornamental planting alongside the stream at the entrance to the milk factory, with one line in the foreground and the other, with some milk tanks, including an orange barrelled one, hiding behind the shrubbery.
Best wishes, Andrew Vines.

A footnote re the
Hemyock branch
Dr.] Brian Jeffery
What a wonderful collection of photographs of the Hemyock line on the CRS website! Well done.
I was there on that fateful day 7 September 1963. My parents had a house in nearby Sampford Peverell. I was 24 at the time, and that might well be me:
-          the young fellow standing to the left of the engine in the fifth photo counting backwards from your section WALKING THE HEMYOCK BRANCH.
-          Also in the sixth photo counting backwards from your section WALKING THE HEMYOCK BRANCH, just to the right of the engine,
-          and in the eighth photo counting backwards from your section WALKING THE HEMYOCK BRANCH, just to the right of the engine.

Someone there was selling photocopies of the timetable from the FIRST day of the Hemyock line on 29 May 1876, and I still have it, I’m looking at it as I write.

I remember that at Tiverton Junction that day they CHARGED for parking whereas normally they didn’t charge, scandalous I thought. I slightly knew Sir David McKenna who was Assistant General Manager of Southern Region at the time when the Bluebell Line was being sold off and I said to him: “I hope you are going to sell it to them at a low price?” and he replied “Oh no, we are going to charge them the highest price we can get”.
The other thing that I remember about the Hemyock line was that when it got to a level crossing the driver got out and opened the crossing for the train and drove through and then stopped, and then the guard got out and opened the crossing to let people and vehicles through.

I also think I remember that the carriage had gas lighting and that someone – I don’t remember who – told me that it was because the train never got up enough speed to feed a battery for electric.

And that after the line closed they bulldozed a station (at Culmstock? Or Uffculme?) and someone wrote “What a pity, it would have made a lovely little house for someone.”

I once arrived at Tiverton Junction from London via Taunton: “The train at platform X”, for “Wellinton, Buurlescumbe, sam´frd Pevrell ‘alt, Tiv’ton junction . . . “ and there caught the connection to Tiverton where I had two hours to wait for the bus to Sampford Peverell. I asked a policeman if there was anywhere to get a coffee and he replied “Tiverton ’arnt no raring metropolis like”.

Another time I arrived at Sampford Peverell Halt at night and when the train departed the guard collected the oil lamp which had been on the platform.

Dr Brian Jeffery
Many thanks for the memories Brian - those were the days!

This weeks report from
Craig Munday

Hi Keith, The St Austell blockade reopened with the customary 50mph temporary speed restrictions over the relaid track sections. Today's computerized tamping machines leave the newly laid rails dead straight, a far cry from the 20mph of years ago whilst the track bedded in.

On the 8th March, a series of GWR HSTs are seen in action. 43029 on the outskirts of Redruth at Trevingey. Moving on to Hayle, 43040 looks great passing over the viaduct and the Isis gardens bedecked in daffs, an RNLI flag proudly fluttering in the winds. Finally for the 8th 43153 heads west over the new bridge at Trewoon.

The next day, 150261 is seen Newquay bound having passed over Middleway CCTV crossing at St Blazey. Some Environment Agency work next to the line has seen the fir trees removed, this now allows a lit photo of trains on the causeway before lunchtime. The shadow once cast by these trees was considerable.
66150 is seen at Goonbarrow ready to work the afternoon clay trip to Carne Point.

The 12th March saw me out in the Grampound area as the NMT passed by. Some extremely lucky sun saw me strike lucky with my shot as the 6 coach test train heads east with red former LNER power car 43299 on the rear.

The next two weeks sees a modified timetable whilst the upside river bridge is replaced at Lostwithiel. Single Line Working over the down by Pilotman will be in place for the two weeks between Par and Lostwithiel over the Down Main.

All the best, Craig
.

Craig Munday working the levers!
If you don't know him, here he is, a popular and familiar figure whose duties allow him to travel far and wide fortunately for us carrying his camera. Here we see Craig operating the levers at a happier time - the Ground Frame now only controls the crossover.
This week we are covering a sad event which sees the end of the line down to the Goods Yard - this was cut back to be only 400 yards long when the yard closed but kept as a handy refuge until last weekend.
To see more of the Goods line and a little of the Goods Yard please click here this will take you to Features January to June 2021 - please scroll to select item 2106.

A nice splash of colour on the former LSWR today, as Network Rail's NMT made its monthly visit. It is seen passing Pendomer whilst returning from Exeter to Salisbury, led by 43062 and tailed by LNER-liveried 43299.  Note Network Rail branding.
Take care, Bill.

Guy takes a last look at
Weymouth Street Tramway
Guy Vincent

An hour in Weymouth today  (11th March 2021)  gave me time to walk the route of the former tramway.   Since my last visit in January the job looks to be all but finished with the rails now gone from beneath the town bridge and all public roadways.  Further resurfacing has been carried out and for 90% of the distance between and the ferry terminal there is no evidence the line ever existed.  At the terminal itself  it appears demolition could be imminent as the area has been fenced off and signs of stripping-out inside the main building can be seen.      RIP Weymouth Tramway.

I've added four pictures of railtours on the line taken in the 1980s and 1990s.
