Signalman's warning?
Craig Munday

Hi there

I guess we all knew the start of 2024 was going to be a tough one, but the resignalling is now upon us. I'm not going to dwell on the sentimental side of things, but allow the images off the camera to speak for themselves. Please look out for the forthcoming The Railway Magazine which will feature a 9 page spread about the boxes closing, and also carries some super retro images from my dear friend Bernard Mills.

Yesterday brought a super pre-sunrise display of light across Par. It lit our famous semaphores at Par, for what could be the final time if the forecast is to be believed.

kind regards

Afternoon admins,

I’ve been on site at Truro this afternoon (28.02). Lots of updates to share!

Signals T7 and T 50 (top of Pydar Street) between the viaducts remain for now and are due to be felled on Monday. Sobering to think they’ll never again show “a good off”.

That’s all for today.

Cornwall re-signalling day 1
Martin Duff

Evening admins,

I saw the website entry from John Roberts and thought I’d add some detail for his benefit and your readers.  This week, until Sunday late evening the lines are blocked between Burngullow and St. Erth – the main task being trackwork in the Truro area laying the new crossover between Carvedras and Truro viaducts.  Unlike the old east crossover which was trailing, the new one will be facing, so a down train may be run to the up platform.

I’m not on site presently, however can confirm all 4 down direction semaphore signals at the west end of Truro (T20 bay, T47 down, T26 up to down and T25 yard) were felled during the day shift today, and much earlier this morning, the up platform inner home signal T6 had been uprooted and put safely in store well before 03.00, so the construction team could get ahead with work on the crossing.  Goodness knows how many trains, not to mention loco classes they’ve had pass by them since November 1971.

Until late Sunday, down trains are terminating at St. Austell and starting back to Plymouth direct from the down platform – this will be the last use of the ground frame which has been there since March 1980 when St. Austell SB closed and control transferred to Burngullow (Par from 1986).  From Monday week the crossover will be fully signalled and controlled from the workstation.

NRES is correct about what happens next – early Monday 04/03 the block extends to the west end of Liskeard and the Newquay branch, together with the clay lines.

*** The last opportunity to see a clay train running round under the semaphore signals at Lostwithiel will be TODAY – Wednesday 28/02.  The 12.36 lunchtime trip from Goonbarrow is due to run. ***

Saturday morning 02/03, the VERY LAST locomotive-hauled working on the Cornish main line under semaphore signals at Lostwithiel/Par is expected to be the Exeter Riverside – St. Blazey clay liner 6V74, due Par 12.21.

Nothing transfers to the workstation until the day the line reopens on March 11.  The preceding weekend when the block extends closer to Plymouth, the commissioning will happen.

The CRS website has already been updated about the details of the last train signalled by Truro signal box.  As reported the first train when the lines re-open is expected to be the “Golden Hind”, the 05.03 Penzance – Paddington.  Clay operations resume the same day, with the 06.14 trip working from St. Blazey to Goonbarrow in readiness for the lunchtime run to Fowey.  There are no test trains scheduled in the preceding days.

The electronic version of the "pre-job" appendix is safe for the moment – it won’t update on the public sites for a while.

Enclosed a few photographs from site with programme manager permission – showing the work on Carvedras viaduct and track relay at Penwithers Junction. More soon.

Cheers,
Martin D

Eastleigh on 19th February 2024
Andrew Triggs
Hi Keith/Roger
While up in Somerset once more, I made a trip to Eastleigh for a day's Rail photography, some much needed variety as even in Somerset with all the Cross Country and GWR HSTs now no more, pickings can now be far and few between these days sadly, the weather on the Monday was actually pretty decent as the enclosed photos show, and one from Westbury on the 20th when returning back to Taunton by Rail. There's still variety out there, but be prepared to travel to capture it

'The End'
Truro 'East' Signal Box
1899 - 2024.

Picture
With his last shift in this box complete, the signaller locks up Truro Signal Box for the final time in the early hours of 27.02.2024. Copyright Sid Warren.

In the early hours of this morning (27.02.2024), Truro signal box (formerly Truro East) signalled its last trains.  The semaphores are due to be felled and control of the section due to be handed over to a workstation in Exeter power box.

It seemed fitting to share the below text from the late Cyril Hitchens, remembering his time working the box.

Truro East Signal Box
Memories from the late Cyril Hitchens

Truro East was built in 1899 and IS of typical GWR appearance. It is one of the few signalboxes in my area that is still in use. It had (has?) all the usual interior fittings and, in my day, the kettle was always boiling to cater for visiting shunters, enginemen, guards and station staff as we were all part of a team who looked after one another. Unusually the frame was at the back. Changes took place in 1971 following the closure of West box and further track rationalisation and remodelling. A new 51 lever frame was installed and a level crossing leading to the remaining sidings and car park was opened.

In my description of West box I said that it was always busier than East. West had the loco shed, the Falmouth and Newquay branches and the intensive westbound goods traffic plus the main lines while East dealt with the up and down main lines, the quieter eastbound goods and the small down goods yard. The main traffic in the down sidings was biscuits and Lyons cakes. Latterly, loads were delivered for Farm Industries who took over the site near the end of my railway career in the mid 1970s. When up goods were sorted and formed up the shunter would phone East to say they were "ready for the off" and when a path became available the train was let out.

One afternoon I pulled the points and remember watching the up VENLO (empties) for Tavistock Junction pass the box and waving to the guard in his van as it crossed the viaduct. Later that week the same guard came into the box for a chat. He told me that when his train from a few days previously reached Plymouth North Road it was already dark. Signals meant they passed through the station at walking pace using one of the platform roads. When they reached Tavy Junction to berth the wagons the guard found a drunk, fast asleep, "draped" over one of the couplings between two vans in the middle of the train. He was woken up and sent on his way. Whether he enjoyed his journey or not no one knows-but he was a very lucky man!

The down sidings fell out of use in the 1980s and there has been further track removal. However, Truro station and the Falmouth line have become increasingly busy and East box is still very much in use and the kettle is probably still boiling!

Sadly, it now appears that the kettle has boiled for the final time.

Some further words on the box including details of the last trains to pass through Cornwall under its control are below, courtsey of NR's Martin Duff.

Hello admins,

I’m at work tonight for the start of the re-signalling blockade.  As I write this, the witching hour has arrived and the dying moments of Truro signal box are upon us.  Born and raised in Truro, this signal box was the first for a visit 40 years ago, so this moment is poignant for me – I never imagined I’d be so close to all aspects of its closure!   When I did my signalling training school with Railtrack, I was allocated Truro for my practical training - what a super time that was, the mail trains were still running as were the Ponsandane fuel tanks, and a real bonus during that time, signalling 47798/47799 on the Royal Train!  I paid my final visit last Tuesday and made a last journey under control of the semaphores yesterday – Monday 26/02/2024.

For the record, the last loco-hauled passenger train signalled was the 21.45 Penzance – Paddington sleeper which left 6 minutes late 22.39 behind 57605.  The Falmouth branch on the final day was in the hands of Sprinters 150247 and 150261.  The last branch arrival was the 23.22 from Falmouth, which arrived 23.53 (150247).  The empty stock left at 23.56 for Penzance depot. The final up train was 6G74, the 19.17 Westbury – Truro engineers which ran via Penzance.

4 castle class units worked services through Truro on the last day.  The last down passenger train was 2C89, the 18.59 Cardiff – Penzance worked by a Class 802 unit, which departed 00.14 (Tuesday morning).

Remarkable to consider that the next passenger trains through Truro now will be under the control of the new Exeter workstation.

The memories of this place will stay with me forever. Farewell to Truro SB, 1899-2024.

Cheers,
Martin D

Many thanks Martin, a very sad day for you no doubt, but at the very least you have those precious memories to hang onto.

Cornwall Resignalling 27th Feb - 10th Mar 2024
John Roberts

I haven't seen a project plan for Cornwall Resignalling, but have made some assumptions from public information.

NRES shows engineering work between St Austell and St Erth Tuesday 27th February to Sunday 10th March inclusive. Buses are running St Austell to Penzance, which at least avoids passengers making a second change back into a train at Redruth, although that is negated by making them change again at Plymouth - there seem to be only two London trains and a couple of Cardiffs running through to St Austell.
Engineering works: Plymouth | National Rail

However, NRES is misleading (as it was for the November block), as GWR says the block extends to Liskeard and Newquay from 4th to 8th March, and further extends to Plymouth and Looe on 9th & 10th March.
Planned engineering in the South West in 2024 | Great Western Railway (gwr.com)

I assume that Truro signalbox area will be transferred to Exeter next week, plus Par and Lostwithiel the following week, although why it needs another two-week block - after a two-week block last November - I'd be most interested to hear. When I was project manager for a previous version of this, we were going to do the whole of Cornwall with mostly our own staff and minimal interruption to customers.

Presumably Monday 26th February 2024 will be the last full day of semaphore operation in Cornwall, and Truro Box will be signed out at 24.19 when Roskear gives Out Of Section for the 23.59 ECS Truro to Penzance Depot, although there are engineers' trains to come down after that.

The first passenger train to be signalled by Exeter Panel will be 05.03 PNZ to PAD on Monday 11th March 2024, although I expect there will be test trains over the previous days.

There is then five days' respite after which there are no trains between Exeter & Plymouth from 16th to 21st March.

I recommend you download and print the Sectional Appendix now, as it will become obsolete from 00.19 on Tuesday. It's 1065 pages so may take time to load, but we're interested only in the Cornwall Mainline pages 107-123 and Cornish Branches pages 271-284. The new pages showing control by Exeter should be uploaded by 11th March.
National Electronic Sectional Appendix - Network Rail

As I said, these are my assumptions, and I expect local members will be sending reports to you over the next two weeks. If anyone has access to the Signalling Notice - what we used to call the Yellow Peril - perhaps they could liberate one for the CRS archives.

Happy photography! John Roberts.
Many thanks for your comprehensive report, John. I'm sure it will be of great interest to our readers.

47 years ago today!
Keith Gale

Dear team,

It was 47 years ago that a lucky number of us enthusiasts had a very early start from Exeter St. Davids to Paddington to travel from Paddington to Swansea and then Plymouth (via Exeter St. Davids!) back to Paddington on the Western Tribute final farewell to the Western Diesel Hydraulic Locomotives. At the end of the tour we then of course had to travel from Paddington to Exeter St. Davids! (explain this to non-enthusiasts!). Anyway, there are lots of pictures of the final train on the internet (plus a few of the final light engine movements afterwards) - but attached is a photo of my souvenir ticket that I have kept all of these years. By the way, I was in Coach A and Seat 31F - but I recall not much sitting and a whole lot of window hanging!

cheers Keith

I took this picture today (26.02) of the section of line passing through the sparsely populated area between Toller Porcorum station and Nettlecombe station.   Long closed but it’s now a footpath where only the ghost of a GWR prairie tank interrupts the sounds of nature.

Best wishes

RE: Michael's interesting diesels
Neil Phillips

Hello Roger and Keith,

Michael L. Roach's early 1970s diesel colour photos were indeed very interesting!

Pairs of Class 25s on the up 'Cornishman' seemed to be a feature of Summer Saturdays in 1972 and the pair shown entering Truro, 7575 and 7573, were Laira's longest-serving Class 25s - many came and went during the 1970s but these two arrived in early 1972 (still in green livery) and after withdrawal in October 1980, as 25225 and 25223 respectively, went straight to Swindon Works for scrapping - their failure to collect train air brake equipment during 1976 overhauls sealed their fate.

Congratulations to Michael for capturing what may well have been the first Class 31 across the Tamar, 5823's visit predating that of 5827 on 1V76 Leeds - Penzance by just over six months. It would be good to know its purpose that day and how far west it managed to get.

Class 25 D7657 arrived in the West Country in early September 1971, the first of its type transferred from the LMR and the only one the WR received in original two-tone green livery with small yellow warning panels. D7657 first served as the Exeter area crew trainer, but so far I have seen no evidence it worked into Cornwall while still in green livery (at that time 5179 and 5180 were crew-trainers at Laira and St Blazey respectively). D7657 was one of a small batch,  D7624-59, built by Beyer-Peacock at their Gorton Works in Manchester, who also constructed the 'Hymek' Class 35 diesel-hydraulics. It has been claimed that these were better built than those from Derby....... (By coincidence I renumbered a Bachmann model I'd had for well over a decade to D7657 just two days ago!)

Hopefully Michael has more such gems to dazzle us with!

Best regards,
Neil Phillips
Thank you for the additional information Neil, I'm glad you enjoyed the images - sure there are more to come!

NINETEEN SIXTY TWO - PART 71
Interesting Diesels
Michael L Roach.

When this series about 1962 eventually ends, it is hoped to switch the attention to a different year in the early 1960s and use some of the trips and photos from that new year.

Meanwhile, regular readers will know that it is sometimes necessary to stray from 1962 and this is a case in point prompted by the imminent demise of the semaphores and signal box at Truro.

I have recently been scanning a small proportion of my slides taken after 1968, because it was in that year with the end of steam, that I switched from taking black and white negative film to colour slide film. mostly using Kodachrome for several years. A few of the more interesting scans will be slipped into  the series occasionally, as here with some diesels taken in Cornwall in the 1970s.

The first slide shows a pair of Class 25 type 2 diesels arriving at Truro with the up Cornishman in 1972. There have been many schemes to replace the semaphore signalling in Cornwall going back 30 years, but who could possibly have foreseen or guessed in 1972 that Truro's semaphores would last more than 50 years.

Lostwithiel Signals
1 week to go
Martin Duff

Good morning Admins,

A few from yesterday lunchtime in the Lostwithiel area.

The signal box has one week to go, due to close early Monday 04/03.

Some vegetation cutting back by signal LL4 was in progress at the time, which conveniently opened up a best opportunity to get a picture. The man with the chain saw got a friendly thumbs up from me!

The semaphore LL4 and associated distant signal will be replaced further down the line in modern form. The train staff will be collected / returned from a line side cupboard at this location too.

Cheers for now,

Martin D

'Hoods' in the rain
Jon Hird

The Bodmin Railway ran another driver experience course using 08359 and their rake of clay hoods (minus the hoods) today (25.02.24). As expected, the weather was abysmal, but I made an effort to point a camera at the train regardless.

Unfortunately unlike Roger, I did not 'enter traffic' in time to remember 50's in service, but here is a photo of 50002 'Superb' in original Network South East livery at Totnes Littlehempston during the 2004 South Devon Railway diesel gala. 50002 was the first of the class to work a train in preservation whilst based on the Paignton and Dartmouth railway, however it sadly suffered power unit damage whilst on hire to a mainline operator and has been out of action for almost 25 years. Work is ongoing to refurbish the power unit and to return it to as close to its 1967 'as built' condition as possible. Copyright Jon Hird.

Freshford Track Renewal Job - 17 & 18 February 2024
Day 2
Guy Vincent

Freshford Track Renewal Job 17 & 18 February 2024

Day 2  Sunday 18th February 2024

Day 2 saw the job continue through to completion.  Heavy rain had set in from around 1730hrs the previous evening and continued throughout the night.  As a result of this in the 2 hours I was at Freshford the adjacent meadowland steadily disappeared under dirty brown water from the swollen rivers Avon and Frome that converge just yards to the south of the railway.

Prior to my arrival  3 of the 4 engineers trains had left the site for Westbury.   First was 66551 with 6Y44 due off at 0840 and this ran to Exeter Riverside, changed ends and headed back east to Westbury (see Dave Tozer's photo published on 19th).  Second to leave was 6Y43 led by 66589 (this had brought in 6Y44 but attached to the rear of 6Y43 at the site to haul it away  solo to Exeter Riverside for run-round and continuation back to Westbury.  However, 66589 failed at Bristol Temple Meads so 66952 was commandeered from the rear of the next train, 6Y42, led by 66506.  This loco too had transferred from one train to another, leading 6Y43 in then at site attaching to the rear of 6Y42.  The pair double-headed from Bristol to Taunton where  they ran-round and went on to Westbury.   The final train to leave was 6Y41 with the old track sections and this became the first train over the new stretch of line - carrying the track displaced during the works.

Freshford Track Renewal Job - 17 & 18 February 2024
Day 1
Guy Vincent

Day 1  Saturday 17th February 2024

A two day project renewing the 'Down Trowbridge' line between 05m 01ch and 04m 65ch.  This section was last replaced over 3 weekends in January-February 1984 so has lasted well.  The ballast was due for renewal and at the same time the asset engineer decided to renew the track with latest specification heavy duty concrete sleepers and welded rails.  Four engineering trains were needed for this possession plus a tamper/liner.  Trains were operated by Freightliner and arrived from Westbury via Castle Cary, a reversal at Taunton and Bristol / Bath.

6Y41 2056 (Fri 16th) Westbury - Bathampton Junction (possession limit)  66556 & 66563 top and tail with flat wagons for the old track sections. This train was stabled on the down line south of the worksite and was unable to leave until the new track was ready for use.

6Y42 0016 Westbury - Bathampton Junction 66952 on up line with spoil wagons for old ballast.

6Y43 0246 Westbury - Bathampton Junction 66506 on up line with further spoil wagons and new ballast.

6Y44 0842 Westbury - Bathampton Junction 66589 & 66551 top and tail on up line with new concrete sleepers and ballast.

Various road-rail vehicles and equipment was used and most of this came along the line from a temporary compound in the main car park next to Bradford on Avon station, 2 miles away where workforce welfare facilities were also located, personnel being ferried to and from Freshford by minibus.

Up High, Down Low - Dowgas
Jon Hird

I took a quick trip over to Dowgas this afternoon for the GWR sleeper training run headed by Class 57/6 57603. I personally much prefer the angle achieved by standing higher up the field here, but with a young crop in the ground, it wouldn't do to go trampling over it. So, I hugged the fenceline and the tractor tracks with my camera, and the drone set off and managed to net me a more side-on shot from higher up!
