'Off Roading' at Christow.
Colin  Burges
Among some slides I have just had digitized are these recording the arrival of my Drewry 0-4-0 Industrial diesel shunter at Christow in April, 1993.
There had been difficulty loading the loco at Exmouth Junction because the 55-ton crane booked for the job had failed and a 45-ton substitute was sent which was inadequate. At Christow this meant that the best that could be done was offloading the loco at the yard entrance.
A while later, when the ground had hardened, I had the bright idea of running the loco down the slope using short lengths of rail which would have to be picked up and taken forward after each short advance. Well, a combination of sloppy controls and my lack of conversancy led to this plan and the loco quickly derailing.
Seeing that that only the flanges sank into the roadway, I applied power and drove the loco on the dirt to the foot of the slope, where it lay gradually sinking until craned in the summer. But the first lift only repositioned it so that I could again drive it along the ground to where the crane could rerail it.
This "off-road" driving had precedent as anyone who has seen the concrete outside St. Blazey shed will know.
Many thanks indeed for this insight into a rather complicated delivery operation.

Yeovil Water Tower
John Cornelius

'One of the early jobs undertaken at 'YRC' was to clean up the water tank
sections recovered from Morlands at Glastonbury, with those in the best
condition to be retained for the rebuild. All restoration work was done in the open as we had no under cover protection in those days.
This series of pics show various of progress with the rebuild, which from
start to finish took nearly three years. The rebuilt tank is slightly
smaller than the original and contains about 15,000 gallons of water,
more than enough to fill the tenders when we have two locos on site
for servicing at the same time.'

Many thanks indeed for your article John and as usual congratulations to the dedicated team at Yeovil Railway Centre.

You may have wondered where the water comes from - John supplies the answer :-  A water meter is installed at the point where the connection
for our site leaves the mains pipe, near the inspection pit.
Originally when we watered locos we had to use a portable pump to get
water from the tank into the tenders, until pipework was installed across the yard from the tank to the water crane by the turntable.
All the above pictures are the copyright of John Cornelius  many thanks John.
Lost relatives - an Appeal
John Alexander Williams
I write to you in an attempt to find some information on my great great grandfather a Mr John T Williams who left Carn Brea about November 1865 for Australia. I have in my possession a copy of a reference given to him on the 4th November 1865 which states he was employed by the South Devon ,Cornwall and West Cornwall Railways Engineering Department for approximately five and a half years prior to that date i.e. around 1858,1859. The reference is signed by the following Offiicers in Charge .... H Appleby, Loco Engineer Wm Nichol, Accountant John Richards , Smiths and Boilermakers John Ivey, Engineers & C0 I believe the middle letter in his name was T for Trewin . I also believe he was born around 1847 in or around Carn Brae . Any information would be of great help or if you can direct me to someone who may be of help would be greatly appreciated as there is a chance I am coming to Carn Brea this year and would dearly like to try and get some history on my family . I live in Melbourne Australia and am 73 years old Thanking you in anticipation.
Yours truly John Alexander Williams. Can anybody help?

A Mighty Locomotive  American Class 160 works the Paignton & Dartmouth
Roger Winnen

5197 Was built at the Lima Locomotive Works at Ohio in June 1945. The United States Transportation Corps designed these engines for use in Europe during World War 2. A total of 2120 were built by various companies in America, the total weight being 135 tons. In 1946 this engine was exported to China.
The restoration work on this engine was carried out by The Churnet Valley Railway. It is understood that this engine will remain at The Paignton & Dartmouth until May 2018.
Many thanks to David Tozer for advising me of its visit to the P & D

WW2 Bomb
at Redruth
Tom Holway

A little background:-  Before the war, Mum and Dad both worked for the Bolitho family at Trengwainton, Mum as a maid and Dad as Butler.  They married at Peranuthnoe in August 1940 while Dad was still at Trengwainton waiting to join up and Mum was doing nursing training at Truro.   Bit of a coincidence is that the chauffeur at Trengwainton was a Charlie Jenkin(s) and I always understood that he and Dad got on well and shared a sense of humour.  All staff of a suitable age were encouraged to sign up for war service or go nursing.  Dad was stationed with the Royal Artillery somewhere near Redruth and Mum was nursing at Newquay where hotels were taken over for the convalescence of war wounded.  On the night of the bombing Dad and another chap had seen Mum and another girl on to the Newquay train and then answered the call of nature in the station toilet.  The bomb dropped while they were in the toilet and when they were pulled out, Dad (Edgar T Holway)  had severe leg injuries and had to have his leg amputated,  the other chap had died.                Many thanks for this piece of history Tom

Oborne
Brian Pibworth

Your news item showing the Thumper at Oborne, Dorset raised my spirits on this awful wet and windy morning and reminded me of a sunny Summer's day back in 2008 when the LSWR main line rang to the sound of pacifics showing their mettle.
The A4 pictures were definitely taken in, what we call round here, "dimsey" and most of the photo-pack had given up and gone home.  The more intrepid of us just cranked up the ISO setting and hoped "Mallard" would appear soon.  This she did, but after passing under the A30 there was an eruption of steam and noise that made us think she had failed.  Apparently a Network Rail tamper had pumped up the ballast and lifted the rails to a point where there was a risk of fouling the bridge.  I suspect these days there would have been an immediate cancellation of the special, but this time there was just a speed restriction for the bridge.  Having built up a good boiler pressure for the gradient the result of closing the regulator was spectacular and it took the crew some time to regain traction and continue to the crossing stop at Gillingham.  For a full record of the day and views of "Duchess of Sutherland" at Buckhorn Weston and Castle Cary I have appended this link to my Flickr collection https://www.flickr.com/photos/rabbipx/6796604477/in/album-72157629116879415/.
As ever I have no great faith in any of the links or captions working so have written it out for yoiur consideration.  Please shout if you need more.
With kind regards, Brian  Many thanks indeed for three super pictures

The railtour commemorated the trials conducted by the newly nationalised British Railways when LNER A4 pacifics 60033 "Seagull" and world record holder "Mallard" ran the A.C.E. route from Waterloo to Exeter. On that occasion the A4s were down to 30 mph at this point but, at the time of this picture, due to raising of the trackbed, steam locos are now restricted to single figures to prevent oscillations fouling the stonework. 1st June 2008 Copyright Brian Pibworth

Almost a sunny afternoon
at Bere Ferrers Station
Roger Winnen

I made the best of a brilliant winters day with plenty of sunshine. Arriving at Plymouth on the 09.00 hours from Penzance at 10.54 I was just in time to see the 10.54 Gunnislake train departing as we approached the platform. Prior to the timetable change on the 1st January 2018 the 09.00 ran as the 08.44 from Penzance giving a connection with this service, the next train being at 12.54 which I caught.

Hi Keith,  Two photographs I hope you'll be able to include on the website taken last Friday 9th February show the recently cleared undergrowth and tree cover on the embankment this side of the West Portal of Box Tunnel. Its a great improvement as previously tree growth badly obscured the view of the tunnel. Unfortunately as it was a brief visit there was no activity on the track itself I'm afraid..
