The Looe Brush
Railtour Timings
Karl Hewlett writes:- The timings for 'The Looe Brush Railtour' are now in the system.  I am surprised this tour is running to Looe, or shall I say running with a pair of class 47's even in top and tail mode. Moorswater is Route Availability (RA), of 7, class 70's are RA7 as are class 47's, that part is fine but I always thought the Looe branch was banned to class 47's being only a RA5? Any input on this is welcome.  I certainly can't find any images of them on the Looe branch so could be a first, detailed timings are:

1Z47 Bristol Temple Meads To Moorswater Tarmac Colas Via Highbridge Loop And Exeter New Yard
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U53047/2019/02/03/advanced
1Z48 Moorswater Tarmac Colas To Bristol Temple Meads Via Looe, Buckfastleigh, Heywood Road Junction and Bath
http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U53048/2019/02/03/advanced

Regards, Karl (Friends Of Penmere Station).
Many thanks Karl

 Peter Murnaghan writes:-
As the tour is being run for the Branch Line Society, I would expect that it will operate right to the end of the line at Moorswater, in the Tarmac Lafarge site.  If it is a long train, it might well block the level crossing, so, if you are planning to go and see it there, make sure you are on the right side of the tracks before the train appears !
And as the link line at Liskeard is not approved for passenger use, BLS passengers on the train will have to disembark at Platform 2, and walk over the bridge to the Looe platform 3 to rejoin the train, just as previous railtours have done here.  And the same in the reverse direction.I hope the sun shines !
Best wishes, Peter.  Many thanks Peter.

Report from Nick recd. at 20.10
Hi Keith,
By mid afternoon trains were running again, 1 an hour. According to staff at Truro all services after 19:00 including the 19:02 would be a rail replacement bus till end of service today, to allow for the repairs to the points at Penryn to commence.

Below are a few pictures from the scene at around 18:00 showing the witness marks on the rails and of the unit involved safely recovered to Truro and lastly the information passengers were greeted with this afternoon at Truro railway station

                          Thanks, Nick.
Thanks to you Nick,

Braunton Remains
Brian Pibworth
On Monday (29th Jan 2019) to Braunton and while waiting for the grandchildren to finish school, I had a wander round the former SR station site. Although there are various artefacts preserved around the Tarka Trail, signs of the level crossing over Caen Street are elusive and I found my eyes drawn to a line of spiked railings between the river and where the railway must have run, now called Riverside. To my surprise and delight I found a couple of fence posts made of recycled rail and then, along the line of railings, a distinctly Malachite Green tinge.  It appears that the original green paint had been covered in a tarry black and this latter is now peeling off to reveal the original.  Not high on my list of railwayana but a pleasant surprise which will remain until the council decide to repaint the railings, as they look tatty, or remove them entirely because of the spikes.

Sic transit gloria australis (or something like it).

                 With kind regards, Brian.
Many thanks Brian.

Totnes News
Clive Smith
Many thanks Clive for the two pictures below keeping us up to date with scene at Totnes.  Access to the former signalbox, now a café, does seem to be a problem - the access from the footbridge seemed ideal - almost 'passing trade' one might say!!
Picture
(1) The current station footbridge also provides access to the Signal Box Cafe on the up platform. Any removal of this footbridge would need to followed up with new replacement access to the cafe. Latest news from the station is that the new footbridge will finally open later this week, however the lifts will not as they are still undergoing tests. Copyright Clive Smith.

Another busy week across the Duchy. A shift in Penzance on 22nd and some glimpses of sunshine including capturing a ten car IET arrival. A great boost to the economy to have 10 car trains into the Duchy again.

Next day visiting the St Germans / Saltash area on 23rd. 70817 passes the delightful creek at Antony Passage, Forder bound for Moorswater with 14 PCAs, which fitted rather snugly on the viaduct.

Cheers,  Craig.
Many thanks Craig for bringing to us views that we are otherwise unlikely to see- your views are about 70 miles apart as the crow flies!

Sunday PW Possession
South Brent
Clive Smith

Line possessions are taking place on some Sundays between Newton Abbot and Plymouth prior to closure of one of the twin bores of Marley Tunnel from Monday 18th February to Friday March 8th. With track replacement taking place around South Brent I set off on Sunday 27th January 2019 with camera in hope of finding some infrastructure trains in the old station. Unbeknown to me it was the track at the old station that was being replaced and the trains were beyond either end of each road bridge and annoyingly the locos were just out of sight. Thus began an unplanned exploration of the parish of South Brent's nature trails and cul-de-sacs to get that desperate photograph. An hour and some muddy feet later here are my efforts.

Regards,  Clive Smith.

Many thanks indeed for your efforts Clive which must include 'bramble torn hands' as well as muddy feet, and a muddy foot well in the car. I can assure you that your efforts are much appreciated by one and all.
Picture
(1) 66181 is just visible on a train of track looking west towards Aish from the bridge at the west end of the old station. A traipse across Brent Island brought me to the River Avon where the infrastructure train was stationary on the single arch bridge over the river, unfortunately obscured by trees for photography. 27th January 2019. Copyright Clive Smith.
Picture
(2) Not to be defeated and a couple of cul-de-sacs later , my searching brought me to beyond the eastern end of the old station and some woods by recreation playing fields that butted on to a fence adjacent to the railway. These woods turned out to be the track bed and infill of the start of the Kingsbridge branch. Looking west to the old station 70817 sits with a ballast train. 27th January 2019. (5) The track section is now manoeuvred into place . It is hard to believe that immediately behind the lifted track section is where the Kingsbridge line diverged from the main line. I took a number of photos of the branch track bed while I was searching for the 70s. A few of these will appear in the near future but they may be more of interest to botanists than railway enthusiasts. 27th January 2019. Copyright Clive Smith.

Just a week to go!!
Don't forget the Looe Brush
Clive Smith
In anticipation of next Sunday's Looe Brush Branch Line Society Railtour , here is a taster to whet the appetite for a feast of 'big train' activity on the branch. The 19th September 2010 was the first of two Sundays celebrating the Looe Valley line 150th anniversary with GWR  0-6-0 pannier tank 9466 and West Coast Railways 37685 top and tailing a shuttle service on the branch consisting of four mark 2s. (The 2013 Hullabalooe railtour had a consist of nine coaches more likely for The Looe Brush). The focus in this feature is on the class 37. The pannier was not forgotten by me but rather videoed so I have few stills of it. For anyone wanting to check out the pannier in some stunning locations click on to the site's Railtours Section, then 'Steam Railtours In Cornwall And Devon 1985 to 2013' .

The long range weather forecast for February 3rd is light cloud.. That can of course change over the coming days. What is definite are the tide times . Low tide is 11.06 and high tide 17.00. That should give a covering of water, certainly for the return. The tour is scheduled an hour break at Looe which should be around mid-afternoon. Plenty of time for those arty and unusual photos.

Regards,  Clive Smith
Many thanks to Clive for his reminder of a good day out.

Here's wishing you all a good day following the 'Looe Brush Railtour' - please take every care - the roads alongside the branch are very narrow and there will be other motorists not following the railtour out and about.  Best of Luck.

Clive has given you an idea of the Long Range Forecast The timings as we know them at present are rather vague - 11.25 Dep Plymouth - the tour will allow one hour at Looe and is due back at Plymouth at 17.07.  More times when they become available.

Mike Roach
Mike Roach writes :-  On Wednesday 25 January 1939 the driver and the fireman of the 4.51pm from Yelverton to Princetown train failed to check the starting signal was at clear before setting off in a snowstorm, drove into the engine release siding and crashed the locomotive through the buffers. The loco was small wheeled prairie tank number 4402 of Laira Shed and it came to a stop at a crazy angle part way down the embankment. The GWR pulled out all the stops and the next train to Princetown ran as normal at 7.00pm that same evening. The signalman contributed to the accident by not resetting the points to the main route as soon as the shunting manoeuvre was completed to allow 4402 to change ends. The appalling weather also contributed to the accident because visibility was poor.
Regards, Mike   Many thanks indeed Mike.
PS Delighted to see that Maurice Dart has started to contribute photos to the website. Maurice has a picture of 4402 on its side after the accident on page 24 of his booklet "Great Western Small Prairie Tanks" published in 1996

High Speed Power Car 43056 'The Royal British Legion' arrives at Westbury leading the 1A89 1533 Taunton-Paddington semi-fast service on the afternoon of January 23rd.     Bar the memorable blue nameplates, carried since May 2010, this power car has led an almost anonymous existence since commencing work with FGW (now GWR) in April 2009.   However, this was the first PC delivered to the Eastern Region of British Rail as part of set 254001 for service on the East Coast Main Line out of King's Cross.   Class 254 HST sets differed from the class 253's by having an extra coach included in the formation, eight rather than seven on the Western Region.  43056 was delivered new on July 5th 1977 and carried the name 'City of Bradford' between 1983 and 1997.  It would be nice if this one could spend time paired with 43002 before both units are removed from service, and even better if a home in preservation could be found?   Besides it's notable history the name surely warrants some form of preferential treatment is due to this workhorse, now into it's 5th decade of front line service?

Roy Hart adds :-
This is a nice picture of one of what became the 44XX class. They came to Cornwall brand new in 1905/6 and Penzance had one (3109) St Ives one (3103) and Helston one (3102). Most of them left Cornwall by 1912, when they were renumbered 44XX. This dates Maurice's picture to 1906-12. Some of this class returned in later years, the last one in Cornwall left Penzance in 1943.

Axminster - today
Brian Pibworth

Good Afternoon Keith,

Herewith attached a pic of one of several "Big Reds" which have been on our line this week.

I'm making the most of these runs as I see the diverted Up freight trains are scheduled to pass the Dn "Night Riviera", at Chard Junction, between 2 and 4 oclock in the morning!  This might be stretching my commitment to CRS a bit too far, but you never know.

With kind regards,   Brian

Many thanks Brian 'Gus on' - you're only young once!!

Rattlebrook Peat railway
By Mick House.

This is a follow up to the article given to us by Andrew Jones and put on this site on 20th September 2018.
All that is know about the Rattlebrook picture below is that it was given to us by David Ellis who received it from Paul Rendell, he in turn received it from a now deceased donor.
If anybody has any information and or photographs of the Rattlebrook Peat railway, they would be gratefully received.
My thanks to Andrew Jones, David Ellis and Paul Rendell.

Footbridge Notes
& Comparisons
Guy Vincent

The recent feature regarding the imminent removal of the original GWR footbridge from St Austell station caught my eye and, although regrettable it is good to learn that the bridge is to see further use on the Helston Railway.   The St Austell bridge dates from 1882 and fortunately retains the old GWR monogram and scrolled date that was relentlessly hacked away from many other similar structures as part of British Rail's modernisation programme in the 1960s and 1970s.   Maybe the gang responsible for this pointless atrocity never reached Cornwall?

Similar bridges to the St Austell example still survive in daily use at Warminster and Upwey stations and in a Victorian suburb of Trowbridge where a public footpath crosses the line.  The first two have long since lost their ornate GWR identities (and roofs) although it is sometimes possible to see the outline of the missing metalwork, especially after overnight frost.  The Trowbridge example has remnants of the date left (188?) plus the outline of the GWR monogram.  A fresh coat of paint (highly unlikely to ever materialise!) will hide this evidence.   Also note the metal cage that was added in 2009 due to repeated acts of vandalism taking place on the bridge.  Finally, an Edwardian view of the structure, taken from the opposite side of the line, when values and general standards in society were far, far higher than those we experience today.

                 Regards,  Guy Vincent
