 A day spent at
Cardiff Central
Andrew Triggs
Part 1

I spent a day at Cardiff Central photographing the colourful modern day scene there. Plenty of variety especially on the freight side of things, also managed to catch my first IET from there to Reading, they really are a superb piece of kit  with excellent quality of ride. The route taken on the day was Penzance-Taunton-Cardiff-Reading-Penzance

Ron writes :- A Saturday visit to Bristol Airport for work gave me the opportunity to phot the peak season Saturday only Butlins Express that ran from Minehead to Bristol and return.
The closest point with easy access was the bridge at Flax Bourton which overlooked the long closed MOD siding.
Note:-  Tyntesfield Government Sidings -  Flax Bourton. Were just west of Flax Bourton station. They were closed in 1981  Quite extensive sidings existed here - which ran for approximately 1,000 yards north east - a good view of these can be obtained by reference to Google Earth and by turning the clock back to 1999.  Google Ref  51deg 25' 34,  N 2 deg 42' 51 E

South Devon today
Travelling by train and the
Rail Replacement Coaches
Roger Winnen

Over a number of weekends until the 10th February 2018 the main line is closed between Plymouth and Totnes for engineering work in the Brent area. Rail Replacement Coaches are operating between Plymouth and Totnes and also Exeter to Plymouth. All trains terminating and departing at Totnes are using the up main line from Plymouth on the old creamery side. However all the connecting coach services are using the other side of the station, the down side to Plymouth.  All passengers having to cross the footbridge or make a long detour by foot around to the other side. It would be more helpful if everything was on the same side!
Many thanks to David Tozer and friends for updating me with movements during the day.

Portbury traffic
Ron Kosys

Ron writes :- In 2005 I renewed my links with Bristol Airport but my visits were nowhere near as frequent as they were in the mid-1980's. Most of the time they seemed to coincide with poor weather. I got enough of that at home!
On 19th May 2009 I was heading for the M4 at Avonmouth and negotiating the roads around Ashton Gate when I noticed through the houses an mgr sitting at the commencement of the Portbury branch. They normally sat here waiting for the barriers at the level crossing to drop before entering the Gorge and heading for the docks at Portbury. Close to the level crossing was a bridge from which I could photograph the mgr. But would I make it in time?

The traffic crawled towards the A4; the barriers dropped just as I was approaching the crossing. A quick left into a convenient lay-by. Grab a camera and run up onto the bridge, to get totally soaked and a phot of 66070 heading for Portbury with the 4F61 1050 empties from Aberthaw Power Station.
This was the only time I managed to photograph a freight on the Portbury branch.  Well done and many thanks.

Problem solved
John Cornelius

One of the biggest headaches we have at 'YRC' Yeovil Junction, is the low narrow railway underbridge, which presents problems of getting larger items on or off site. Several years ago we were 'gifted' some redundant ex-Port of Bristol railway wagons.
After their arrival by road to the upside yard, it left us in a quandary as how to get them across to our site on the down side.
The quickest and easiest option of moving them across by rail was deemed too expensive for the company. So our site engineer came up with an idea of constructing a low two wheel sledge to do the job and that was how we got them under the bridge and onto the site.
At a later date the sledge was used again to bring the four small diesel locos across, once the cabs had been removed to reduce height.

The problem was getting the PBA wagon which had been delivered by road to the up goods yard to the north of the station to the Yeovil Railway Centre which has been established in the Goods Shed area to the south of the station complex. Craigs Compilation
Craig Munday
Despite grim wintry downpours and high winds, there have been some "oasis" patches, completely altering the landscape when the strong sunlight came through.

The 16th saw a Chiltern liveried class 68 68011 come down to Laira to collect TPE Mk3s for the forthcoming Trans-Pennine carriages. The crew were from DRS and Trans Pennine drivers who will be taking over these stock moves in the future. They are seen at Laira, and the train returning East at Hemerdon.

The 18th saw similar glimpses of sunlight as 70812 headed east over Lynher viaduct with the cement empties, and 66177 stood in St Blazey with the afternoon freight. A HST working 1A82 is also pictured at Lynher.

Cheers for now, Craig                  Many thanks

January Jaunts
Craig Munday

Some usable sunshine saw me out with the camera in recent days.

A pair of class 153 made a nice departure from Newquay on the 10th. The units are seen passing Chapel. This area seems ripe for housing developments in the coming years.

Sun 14th saw a mixture of workings in nice light. I popped up to Respryn to chance my hand in getting 43002 in sun and mist. The sun had just punched through to reach track level as the hum of the HST came into earshot running along the river up to Brown Queen Tunnel. The thick mist had been swirling since my arrival, and stayed in the air as the blue liveried power car passed by. Previous winter visits had been around this time.

The beauty of Respryn is that it's one of the few places in the Duchy where a shot both ways works. The morning shot from / to Bodmin Parkway in quite pleasant too.

Later in the afternoon news spread of 57604 dragging a HST from Long Rock to Laira. I headed west on family business, only to just catch some stubborn cloud at Penponds. The skies clear eastbound sadly.

All the best,  Craig.                    Many thanks indeed Craig.

More details
Guy Vincent

With reference to yesterdays pictures taken at Severn Beach Guy writes in, by return of post - for which many thanks :- Just time to look up and briefly reply to your query regarding the shunter shown at Severn Beach station in Derek's excellent and rare image.  Incidentally, the white house that is visible in Ron's shot that started this topic was almost certainly built by the GWR for the resident stationmaster's use.  The house still stands today, although now it is surrounded by more modern properties.

ICI Severnside Two 0-6-0 Yorkshire Engine Co 'Janus' shunters. These were: 'Iburndale', Works No 2725 built in 1958 and 'Kildale', Works No 2741 built in 1959.   I would say Derek's picture shows 'Kildale' based on the nameplate size.

According to information posted on the RCTS Mystery Photographs site along with a 1968 photo of a single car DMU at Severn Beach, the Janus shunters used to come out onto the former Pilning line to assist with shunting trains into and out of the ICI plant that was located on the Avonmouth side of Severn Beach station.

Reference: Flickr  EN L  Kildale Severnside.   A good B/W shot of 'Kildale' working within the Severnside plant on 25th June 1990.  No other details found on the fate of this loco.

Reference: Flickr  Gordon Edgar  ICI Severnside Works.  A nice photo dated 07.03.1970 of 'Iburndale' in the ICI Severnside complex.  A comment below the photo says that this loco was located at Flixborough Wharf in 1994, was moved to Morley Waste Traders at Ripponden, West Yorkshire by 22.08.2008 and scrapped before 18.03.2011.  The shunters were both plated to run on BR metals.

Another good week of contributions on the site, especially Ron's D1057 shots and John's Somerton 'Western' to name two.

Best regards for now.  Very many thanks indeed to you  Guy

Severn Beach
Derek Buttivant

Seeing the photos of Severn Beach "then and now" on the web site,
prompted me to look out and send to you two slides I took at Severn
Beach quite a long time ago.  I'm afraid I can't give an exact date but
it is likely to be the early 1970s.

Photo 1 shows the rather grand exterior of the station building with its
covered "cab road" and, beyond the station, the level crossing for the
line towards Pilning - still in place (and in use?) at that time. Rather
like All Hallows on Sea in north Kent, there had been expectation of a
substantial resort developing at Severn Beach, hence the relatively well
appointed station buildings.

Photo 2 is unusual in that, while both faces of the island platform
still had track, the passenger service always used the terminal
platform.  On the occasion of my visit the Pilning line was occupied by
this diesel loco which carries a nameplate (unreadable) and a company
logo but no number.  No doubt one of our many followers will be able to
identify it.  The level crossing gates are in very good condition, as
was the whole station.

Shunter parked on the Pilning line alongside the platform. In this view the Pilning line appears to be complete across the crossing. This most interesting picture was only received a short time ago - any suggestions as to what the shunter was being used for? Pictures date from the early 70's Copyright Derek Buttivant

Remember this - the steam railmotor on the Looe branch - seen here at Liskeard on the 18th November 2012. The gentleman seen on the platform is, I believe, no other than driver Ray Churchill. We hope he is enjoying his retirement. Copyright Roger Winnen
