April 2nd 2025

2/4/2025

Join us this Sunday, as we visit
The North Cornwall Miniature Railway

On Sunday 06.04.2025 we will be making a trip to the 10 1/4" gauge North Cornwall Miniature Railway (Trewethen, near St. Teath). The railway has an extensive layout and also has a large toy museum, featuring vintage pedal cars and model railways amongst other attractions.

Entry is by donation to a charity of the railways choosing.

There are, unfortunately, no easy public transport links (bring back the North Cornwall line!), but you can find the railway and get to it by car by searching for 'North Cornwall Miniature Railway and Toy Museum' on Google Maps. We aim to arrive at 12 midday.

Great weather for photography, many thanks chaps.

Respryn Bridge
Roger Geach

Here's a shot of a Peak at Respryn Bridge, makes a change for you from the light loco 69s!

56s in BR days were very rare in Cornwall so I was interested by the article posted today (click here), in BR days we had 56013 on trial, a transrail one for the freight exhibition/staff and customers day at St Blazey - 56044 was it? And about three rail tours in total, so they were rare indeed.

Cheers Roger - sadly no Peaks left to hunt down these days, so we'll have to take the '69'!

If anybody has any more info on which 56's visited Cornwall and when, please drop us an email - [email protected]

Steam in Exeter on April 1st
(Not April Fools!)
David Tozer

On my way home from a trip to Topsham I passed St Katherines Priory.

0-4-0 JEAN was out having a bit of action.

In the background you can see the impressive viaduct that is under
construction. When complete they will have a complete circuit with a
passing point.

Unit drags at Swindon
Ken Mumford

Picture
5Q89 [Long Marston to Eastleigh East Yard] caught me by surprise. It was due to stop alongside platform 3 for a few minutes on its original timing. I was sitting down talking to another railway enthusiast when I came into sight and these are the best two photos I was able to get!! Loco was 47739 and I managed to get the end of the train as unit 701509. 01.04.2025, copyright Ken Mumford.
Picture
Not the shot I really wanted - 5Q76 Walton Old Junction M.S.C. Sidings to Newport Docks (Sims). BUT why via Warrington (Bank Quay), Crewe, Stafford, Tamworth, Rugby, Northampton, Tring, Willesden (Sudbury Junction), Acton Wells Junction, Southall, then down the ex-GWR main line to Newport via Swindon and Severn Tunnel Junction? Wouldn't a more direct route [less mileage, less traffic and cheaper??] to have gone [beyond Crewe] via Shrewsbury, Craven Arms, Hereford and Abergavenny to Newport?? Anyone have an answer, please? 01.04.2025, copyright Ken Mumford.
Many thanks Ken, some interesting trains.
