A mystery location - does Roger have the answer?
Mike Forward

Hello Roger, I was having another sort out over Christmas and found this print which I must have bought at a model exhibition many years ago..There are no details of the photographer ,the date or location.
I am guessing I bought it because the train was in Cornwall somewhere ,anyone any ideas, please.?

Roger says: 'It's Penryn' !
Do we all agree?
Please send us an email at [email protected] if you have any more info.
Thanks for sending it in Mike, I hope your question is answered.

A 'Victorious' start to 2024
Mike Forward

Happy New Year to yourself, the team and all contributors.

We start 2024 with a picture from Michael Adams of 50036 ‘Victorious’ at Par on 29 April 1988, with the 12.03 from Penzance to Plymouth. A proper train!

Sadly the loco was scrapped in July 1992.

Best wishes, Michael.

Many thanks Mike, what a great photo.
Happy new year to you, too.

Coombe Castles
Jon Hird

The possibility of some sun tempted me to make a trip out to Coombe St. Stephens today (05.01.24), with the hope of catching a 'Castle Class' HST on the viaduct.  As luck would have it, an 'up' Penzance to Plymouth train was running around 80 minutes late, which meant that two HST's should pass my Mid-Cornwall location within 20 minutes of each other.

I was inspired to take a look at the viaduct after seeing Rogers shot which was posted to the site a few days ago.  I went aimed both with my camera and my drone, however upon arriving it was immediately obvious that the hand-held shot which Roger captured almost 40 years ago is no longer possible due to tree growth, so today the drone did the honours.

That's more like it. The clouds part momentarily for 43186 as it crosses the viaduct with 2C11, the shadows of the cloud chasing closely behind the rear power car. 05.01.24, copyright Jon Hird.

Rogers 1976 shot as a comparison. The tree growth around the location means there's no chance of a shot from here any more. A class 50 on Coombe St. Stephens viaduct in 1976, copyright Roger Winnen.
