6th April 2019

Last HST Riviera
Clive Smith

Friday 5th April 2019 may well be the last ever HST worked Cornish Riviera as the train has been an IET for a while now on Saturdays. The last down Cornish Riviera HST was supposed to have been back in December last year but one further HST found itself on the diagram on Saturday 26th January this year so that may well have been the last down working. Peter Murnaghan was thankfully at Liskeard to record it for the website's January archive.

Regards,  Clive Smith             Many thanks Clive
It is reported that the up Riviera on 8th April was again an HST

Trevingey Mail Apparatus
Paddy Bradley
A couple of days ago I had a visit from the famed Redruth Historian Paddy Bradley. Paddy brought along some of his railway pictures, you're welcome to use them he said. I can assure you that we're in for some treats. This first set at Trevingey Crossing are from 2" square yellowing prints, not first class pictures but an invaluable record. These pictures were taken 96 years ago TODAY.

Many thanks indeed Paddy.

The location of the 'Mail Apparatus' is clearly shown in this view from a 1905 25" map courtesy National Library of Scotland.

This gentleman has posed facing the train which will come from Penzance. Rather a dangerous position one thinks. Trevingey Level Crossing. Setting up the mail bags and nets for the 'Up mail 6th April 1923 From the Paddy Bradley Collection.

A real action shot, there's no doubt as to the location - see Carn Brea Castle and Monument in the background. A rough path crosses the field in the background, a path regularly used by pupils from Carn Brea Village and Trevingey areas to go to and from school. Note the mail pouches ready to be snatched by the 'Up mail on 6th April 1923. Apparatus still working in 1933- From the Paddy Bradley Collection.

Another more recent picture taken looking north across the crossing. The 'mail apparatus' is clearly visible. Note the keepers hut on the up side of the line. From the Paddy Bradley Collection. The grand building in the background is the former Redruth Womens and Miners Hospital. The building was gutted by fire perhaps twenty years ago but thankfully has been restored as flats and sits amid a collection of new houses which occupy the field in the foreground.
An Update
Karl Hewlett

A quick update from me regarding a couple of topics raised on the CRS website, one by myself and another by Clive Smith.  Mine was regarding Pathfinder Tours 'The Mazey Day Cornishman' with 55009, Deltic 9 is not going to be ready for this tour on June 29th due to receiving a power surge through all of its traction motors and number two power unit generator, this happened whilst at the head of 'The Auld Reekie' tour on March 03rd.  An official statement from the DPS here: http://thedps.co.uk/category/alycidon/  The tour will now be a pair of DRS class 37's instead.

With regards to Clive's report about the sale of 'Boden Rail' class 50, 50017 falling through and the loco potentially becoming a source of spare parts.  Good news, it seems that its transfer to the Great Central Railway has happened and the loco is due to work at their Spring Diesel Gala this year: http://www.gcrailway.co.uk/special-events/spring-diesel-gala/

Regards, Karl (Friends Of Penmere Station).

Many thanks for keeping an eye on the press for us Karl.
