Christine Simmonds

The funeral of Christine Simmonds was held last Thursday. Christine was a wonderful lady, who held various posts and key positions within the Cornwall Railway Society.

In addition to CRS members, her funeral was also well attended by the various other local organisations in which Christine was involved. She will thus be sadly missed by many.

Christines sister, Barbara has written in to say;

The family of Christine Simmonds would like to thank all those who attended the funeral and sent cards and for the generous donations of £450 for the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

May Christine rest in peace.

Cardiff Bay Station
June 2016
Roger Winnen
from Sunday June 2, it's all aboard for a new era, with Transport for Wales launching a brand new service between Cardiff Bay and Pontypridd, around 20 miles away, which stops at every station along the way, including Radyr and Llandaf.

Thanks to Keith Jenkin

Summer trains to Newquay
Jon Hird

With the introduction of the summer timetable, we once again see trains from various destinations travelling along the branch to Newquay. On weekdays there are trains from Bristol Temple Meads, Penzance (utilising the branch's 'shuttle' unit for the day) and London Paddington, all terminating at the seaside resort. Weekends see more trains to and from Paddington and Bristol Parkway.

Although the services are formed by IET's - not the most exciting of trains for we enthusiasts - it's still pleasing to see longer trains making use of the branch. There's something bizarre about seeing these modern, streamlined trains (with pantographs!) quietly winding their way over the antiquated features of the single-track branchline, long may it continue.

GWR IET unit 802013 crosses the old A30 via the notorious iron bridge (regularly hit by vehicles with high-loads before the bypass in the background was built) with 1C74, the 09:04 Paddington - Newquay on 03.06.2024. The train had worked down to Plymouth paired with another unit, where the train was split, this front portion continuing on to Newquay. Copyright Jon Hird.
