46037 About To Meet Its End
Clive Smith

Following on from Guy's piece on 46037's demise  I was present on its last fateful run. This was the last head-code panel class 46 in what was to be the class's final year in service. The picture is on Saturday 16th June 1984. The loco is at Plymouth arriving from Cornwall on the 10.35 Penzance to Leeds. I was travelling to Bristol TM on the train and all was not okay even then. The loco was belching out black smoke and stinking of fuel which was covering the side of the loco. Surprisingly 46037 made it to Bristol on time. By now the fumes were really bad and flames were coming out of the exhaust. Amazingly the loco was not replaced and the green light was signalled. A peak enthusiast I knew boarded the train announcing he was going to Birmingham on it. My reply was " that will never get to Birmingham" and so my words turned out be quite prophetic as it caught fire at King's Norton which was extinguished by the West Midlands fire brigade, causing severe delays to other trains in the area. 46037 certainly went out in a blaze of glory.

Regards
Clive Smith

Extremely interesting - many thanks Clive

Exeter Central
Cement
Ron Kosys

Ron writes :- Amazing how many times I managed to photograph the Exeter Central Blue Circle cement train in totally overcast, extremely dull weather.
I would always prefer it to be raining under those conditions – at least the rain normally gave the image a bit of contrast...

You've done very well here Ron Many thanks for saving the past for us all to see - forgotten memories.

Friday 15th April saw 31459 work the Blue Circle trip to Exeter Central from Riverside. It normally ran early afternoon, but not always. Copyright Ron Kosys Here it arrives from Riverside with four PCA’s in tow and then is seen shunting the depot.

31459 slowly backs out of the yard with in excess of 12 PCA’s. It would have a short wait for a path down the hill towards St Davids and Riverside, as a DMU from Exmouth is running in from St James’ Park towards Central. 15th April 2018 Copyright Ron Kosys

After a short wait, 31459 runs through Exeter Central with the empty cement tanks. These would return to Westbury for refilling via the Speedlink network later that day from Exeter Riverside. 15th April 2018 Copyright Ron Kosys
