27th September 2019

27th September 1959 at
Laira
Mike Roach
Another photographic anniversary - 60 years ago causes Mike Roach to dig into his 'Treasure Chest' of photographs.   Many thanks Mike.
Night Owl 2-8-0 number 4704 of Old Oak Common Shed is seen by the pumphouse at Laira. The loco behind is number 6166 of Laira Shed. It had arrived in September 1959 and would depart 12 months later in September 1960. Believed to be the only one of the class ever shedded at Laira. Most of the 61xx class were shedded at sheds in the Thames Valley for working suburban trains into Paddington Station. The date is 27 September 1959.
                                          Regards, Mike.

Back in the late 1950s and into the early 1960s one could see these 47xx Class engines and the Stanier 2-8-0 on the milk train at Plymouth

Hello Roger,
Great pictures on the site, always good to see your ‘Western’ shots and in the snow!
I now send two pictures of class 50 number 50006 both taken on a hazy but hot 6 August 1983.The first shows the 11.15 Paddington to Paignton approaching Dawlish. Thanks for dealing with these.  Best wishes Michael

Crewkerne & Creech
Bill Elston

Had a visit by the NMT this morning 26th September 2019), photo shows it heading west to Exeter (going away from the viewer), between Crewkerne Station and tunnel.
The second photo at Creech shows 68017 on a charter from Eastleigh to Paignton.  Nice uniform rake of chocolate and cream stock.  Hope they are of interest.
                    Cheers,  Bill Elston
Many thanks Bill,

Crewkerne and Creech are the locations for the above photographs.  Made me wonder how far apart these locations are as the 'crow flies'.  The answer courtesy of Google Earth is approx. 15 miles. Goodness knows how far on the tarmac.  Many thanks Bill for your devotion to duty - hope it was a pleasure.
Incidents in the 80's
Jonathon Henwood

I'm a big fan of the website, keep up the good work! I was wondering if any viewers have any information or photos that they could post about the following incidents from the Eighties which I don't think that the website has covered yet:

September? 1983? 50014 Warspite derails at Penzance station sidings on a Summer Saturday morning blocking in several other locos. A 37 arrives light to work the 10.30 Penzance to Manchester and a pair of 37s arrive on the breakdown train and then take out the 13.54 parcels train.

August? 1984? The 'Radio train' visits Newquay and then Penzance behind a class 37. It is berthed in one of the Bay platforms at Penzance station (Bank One) and broadcasts from there and gives out freebies etc.

May/June? 1985? Whilst being shunted into platform 3 at Penzance, the leading mark 1 of a SAGA special derails and ploughs into platform 3. I believe that 50006 Neptune attended with the breakdown train.

August? 1988?  During a shunting accident, the sleeper stock hits the East End of Long Rock shed sideways on.

Best wishes,  Jonathan Henwood.   Can anybody help Jonathon?

Replies to the website please and if you have any pictures them as well.  Many thanks
