Diversions on the Southern
David Tozer

On Tuesday due to a fatality at Hele & Bradninch three GWR services were
diverted via Honiton.
43018/153 with the 0741 Penzance - Paddington
43154/180  with the 0900 Penzance - Paddington
802009/802005 with the 1003 Paddington - Penzance.
We all thought that after the recent closure of the route between Exeter
and Taunton we would never see an HST this way again in passenger
service. Will the 0900 Penzance to Paddington be the last, I wonder.

That said we still have the NMT once a month.

Where is this?
St Austell
Paul Delcour
In scanning slides from a holiday in 1975 in Cornwall I was stunned to find I had been on a train crossing the Royal Albert Bridge and possibly behind a class 52. Now passionate about British trains I did not remember that.
Could I impose on you and put this slide to you and ask if anyone knows which station this is? I have searched several station, but cannot find it or it has changed too much since 1975.
I’d be most grateful. Yours sincerely, Paul Delcour Hilversum, Netherlands.
Only too pleased to help Paul. Well known to us in Cornwall, but very interesting note the point off the down main beyond the station and that the signalbox is still in use. The portocabin cabin seen to the right of the Western was the reception office for the Motorail which operated between Kensington Olympia and St Austell. The view is taken of course from the footbridge which was very recently replaced together with the downside station buildings which were replaced a number of years ago.

Gauging train at
Quintrell Downs
Shane Webster
A 2+4 Castle Class was tested on gauge clearances on the Newquay branch this morning as far as Quintrell Downs. The set worked as 5Z20 09.14 Laira T&RSMD to Quintrell Downs and returned as 5Z21 11.44 to Laira T&RSMD.                      Many thanks Shane
